MeZe equals misery for our luncheon experience. Having had a good experience at this restaurant once before, we decided to indulge in their wonderful food once again, last Friday. The place was packed, but we were able to secure seating at the "bar" facing the kitchen areas. This gave us a birds eye view to a whole lot of unhappy faces working just on the other side of us. Chelsea (I only know her name because we heard another employee call her that) appeared to be in charge. A woman was at the counter, ordering, and we heard Chelsea say, to another worker, "I hate that lady on the phone". I glanced at the woman ordering, and yep, she was on the phone. We were pretty shocked by this, for without that lady on the phone, you might not have a job (that you very clearly do not enjoy). Everyone is entitled to a bad day, but you need not insult those who give you patronage. The food is great, the atmosphere, not so much. read more

I was told this place had great Lamb and Beef kebabs. When I lived in Germany working on the Grafenwöhr military base I practically lived off of Döner kebabs at a couple of my favorite spots, one by work, and one by my house. I was excited when I saw the vertical rotisserie.This...this was not what I was told. The chili sauce was bland, the beef/lamb was dry, and the pita was...forgettable. I've made better kebabs at home, this was just horrible. This was just a horrible butchered mess of my favorite food, and I felt sad. The cashier took her break and sat next to me, which was fine. Until she started asking me if the bar was "vibrating" I told her "it isn't", because it wasn't. She said she was just uploading to the universe and sending out her own vibrations. I didn't have much to say to that other than give her a blank stare. I'm sure she was just high, and is living her best "enlightened" life or whatever. But that was beyond obnoxious. I'm not really into wearing patchouli oil, playing a didgeridoo, and listening to Phish. So I mean...if that new wave hippie scene is your thing, you want something vegan, and "conscious"; and if you talk about how you should have been born in the flower child era...then maybe this spot is for you. I placed an order online for pickup. When I asked for my order the waitress was unhelpful and said it was on the counter. I assumed it was the only one in the bag, so I grabbed the bag and left. I get a call 5 min later to bring the food back, cause apparently I took the wrong order I do, to receive my order instead (which was missing items) I thought they would just throw the other food away, but no, she called out the name and gave it to another customer! The food I could have done anything to! We are in a pandemic and there is a covid surge happening! What are you thinking?! This is so careless and unsanitary! The girl at the counter with shaved parts of her head and a bunch of piercings ordered my girlfriend to walk to the front door and open it while she yelled 6 times for someone named Chris to get their order. Every time she yelled in my ear it made me flinch. That was the rudest thing I've ever experienced, train your lazy staff to walk to the door and open it them selves and call for the orders. This is probably the best quick Mediterranean food restaurant I've ever been to. The chicken shawarma was flavorful and moist! The falafel was fluffy, but still crispy. Was so delighted by this delicious and healthy lunch I shared with my sweetheart. I had the shawarma and my fiancé had the kabobs. We went for plates to try all the toppings and hummus. We absolutely made the right decision! The pick up time was reasonable and parking is a little difficult if you have a big truck like mine, better to park on main, not mill. This was one of my favorite lunch spots but they are absolutely not following any sort of COVID or health and safety regulations. None of the staff wears a mask or gloves when prepping food. I watched the food prep person (not wearing a mask) prep food with her hands, touch a dirty rag and then go back to prepping food. The person working the register touched the cash with his dirty hand then went and touched the food. I asked for my money back and left disgusted. Food is generally good but stay away from the meat. The quality of the meat has gone way down since they opened. There seems to be lots of gristle that's just too tough and nasty to chew through and I end up spitting out 3 or 4 chunks with every kebab I eat. Seriously, without a doubt, their Paleo Bowl was one of the best meals I've had in a long time. I switched out beets (which I'm not a fan of) for hummus for no extra charge. Food was good, but the service and the attitude of the staff sucked. We ordered a pita to split and eat in house. Asked for it to be cut in half. Was told "we can't do that, it will fall apart". When the order was ready, it was wrapped up to go. I explained we ordered it to eat in and again asked to have it cut in half. Was again told (by 2nd employee) that they won't do that, but they will give us 2 plates and a knife to do that ourselves. Let me start with the food. It's bright. It's fresh. It feels good to eat. The presentation is lovely! We ordered a falafel plate and a chicken shawarma plate. Both were beautiful. The falafel were crisp outside and soft, fluffy, and moist inside. So flavorful! The hummus is light and creamy. The kraut offers a fantastic balance, and the salad and rice both lightly seasoned and yummy. The pita are like pillows. The shawarma was succulent and nicely seasoned. My family loves this food, which is a joy as Grass Valley doesn't have much to offer in the way of healthy AND delicious. I had to knock off a star for service though. The person who appeared to be a shift manager took ten minutes to take our order as she was on the phone. Other employees were available but she sent them to clean tables. We received our meal quickly, but as we ate, we had to endure the same manager complaining loudly about every customer who called in and many who were still in the restaurant eating! A man came in to request a job application, and she refused to offer him one then made fun of him when he left. The whole restaurant even got to hear about her living situation and how eager she is to move her boyfriend into her bedroom and also how much she thinks schools are all evil. Given our family was eating with children present, this all became more and more awkward as she pulled the young staff in, got uncomfortably close to their faces, and generally handled herself unprofessionally, whispering shortcuts to them and shouting her discontent that a large order had not come with a substantial enough tip. She went outside and came back in in a huge uproar that she had to order people who were not dining there to leave the benches out front. Everything and everyone received loud cooks it's and criticism from the manager. Don't get me wrong: we will return. Maybe not to dine in anymore if she is present. The barrage of negativity really brought the whole mood of the space down, and our experience with this place until this one had been lovely! read more

Excited that GV now has a growing restaurant community. Delicious, fresh and intentional. My guess is you can't go wrong here. We are vegetarian, both dishes were similar but different enough. Falafel was the best I've had, perfectly cooked and NOT dry. Pita was also super soft but not over the top. Look forward to our return. It's pricey considering it is served without sides.
