Went Saturday night with a group. We sat at 5:30 seated by the front door so it was chilly. The most prompt thing about the meal was the water being filled. I had manicotti which was tasty but dry at the ends. My daughter-in-law had the salmon, the size of which was a canape. The meals were delivered randomly; other tables ordering after us got their meals first. My granddaughter and niece had meals served in chipped bowls--tacky. The most annoying part was the feeling that we were not wanted, sped through the meal after having waited 2 hours. Then the bill got thrown on the table with no thanks or recognition of any kind. Absolutely obnoxious. Never stepping foot in there again. Stood there for about 10 minutes and the person working there totally ignored me. A couple he knew came in and he immediately walked over and offered to seat them. The couple just stood there and the gentleman told him I was there first. I've been here a few times with my family, sometimes in a large group. The most recent time I visited this week, it was a group of four. Mezzanotte is a BYOB with great Italian food that I've always enjoyed. The service is good and they definitely work to make it a more leisurely experience which can be nice. And while they keep everything at a slow pace, the servers are constantly around and water cups stay filled. Overall a nice dining experience for larger and smaller groups. Five stars plus. For an appetizer I ordered the stuff mushrooms, which were stuffed with pesto and breadcrumbs. Absolutely delicious. The only disappointing thing was that they were only four on the plate. For my entrée I ordered chicken roll a teeny served with a side of spaghetti and sauce. The chicken was flavorful, and cooked to perfection. For dessert I ordered a perfectly made decaf cappuccino and the carrot cake which tasted fresh and homemade. Highly recommend this restaurant. Food has always been good, but don't try going on a busy "holiday." We had a 6:30 reservation for Mother's Day. So did about 20 other people (6pm-6:30pm reservations) who were waiting in a lobby without seating... no staff member greeted guests waiting helplessly to check them in or offer any kind of concession... seems like some kind of accommodation for those who fell victim to Mezzanotte's over-booking (or whatever the problem was for the 20+minute wait) would've been appropriate. Worse, we confirmed about an hour before, and they didn't even call us when we didn't "show" (we showed, but since there was no host to talk to, we had to find another restaurant at the last minute). We'll give them another shot, since their food is yummy, but this has really left a bad taste -- totally unprofessional. read more

The owner of the restaurant decided he did not like the tip that was left and threw the money on the table stating "I hope your children work in a restaurant one day so you know what it is like." After passing Mezzanotte for years, we decided to give it a try and we were very happy we did. When we walked in the restaurant seems nondescript. We were quickly greeted and seated. We received fresh baked bread and water. The bread was excellent - obviously baked fresh on premises and was one of the best we had, with a nicely hard crust and warm soft inside. We order a soup - pasta fagiole. It was simple and good, exactly what we needed for a cold night. Next, part of entree was a small salad with Italian dressing. The salad was fresh and the dressing was nice and light and not too sour, as many tend to be. For entree we both had the veal ossobucu with risotto. The ossobucu was fall off the bone delicious and the risotto was perfection. It's been one of the better ones I've had in a while. For dessert we opted for a locally made Napoleon cake. The portion was small, but the Napoleon was fresh - the puff pastry was crispy and flaky and the creme pattisiere was not too sweet, just a perfect blend. This was a perfect finish for a great meal. All throughout, service was prompt and attentive. We'd be back much more often now we know how excellent it is. read more

On a recent visit, we both had soup as an appetizer. The pasta fagioli was light on ingredients, about four pieces of macaroni and the tortellini soup was super salty. Our dinners were good but on my two visits here, spread apart by many years, I got sick both times. I suspect that they use some kind of oil that I don't tolerate well. There were only a few tables with people on a Saturday night. There was an older man waiting on tables and he was nice enough but hard to understand, a bus lady and the owner who was fairly congenial. The owner is Croatian. I was wondering why there were so few people on a top dining out night of the week. We were considering having a party here but we've decided to pass. We just had my wife's baby shower at Mezzanotte and 23 of our 35 guest were impressed with the overall experience. We didn't even leave the restaurant after cleaning up and guest were calling us to tell us how much they enjoyed the food and the service. The amount of food was impressive and generous, the service was impecable and the owner Mike was on site to make sure everything was to perfection. I would highly recommend this restaurant for hosting your next special event. Last weekend we hosted my daughter's baptism here and everyone was raving about the food, the service, and everything in between. The staff was able to accommodate my group of 65 people and the whole dinner went off without a hitch. Best of all, the price was extremely reasonable. The restaurant is BYOB and they even let me drop all the beer, wine, and cake off the night before so that they could make sure everything was cold for the party. The owner Mike is also one of the nicest and most accommodating guys around. I can't say enough about how easy they made our large event. I love this place This is the benchmark when comparing Italian restaurants in the area and surrounding towns. I give it 5 stars because the food and service is always consistant. Atmosphere pleasant. The two guys that run the place are the waiters and they are great. One is a crack up. This is a true neighborhood gem. The food I'd say in southern Italian Naples style. There are always about 5-10 specials per night besides the regular menu. They are always accommodating to special request. I don't think I've had a bad meal here. And I've gone at least 20 times. The food at Vicci in Lodi is similar but a little more upscale. Food at Sage in Fairlawn is good but this is much better. Our waiter wanted to visit and he had to come over and tell us the specials, which he mumbled through and who was offended when he was asked to repeat a couple. He gave us the names only and told us nothing about them. 2. We were a table of 4. Three people got their appetizers. Waiter was clearly annoyed when we finally asked if the fourth person was getting their appetizer. The waiter was too busy visiting with his "buds" at the two tables near us. 3. It went this way the whole night so without boring you - if you know the people who work there - this is the place for you. Otherwise, you will feel unwelcome and the service is terrible. Considering all the great neighborhood Italian places in North Jersey, one word describes Mezzanotte; disappointing. Service was slow (and the place wasn't at all crowded), and the food was mediocre. The sole stuffed with crabmeat (a "special") was impossibly dry, and the salmon with leeks (another "special") was flavorless. Even the fried calamari, which should be a staple at a place like this, was mediocre. Prices are very good - but you get what you pay for. My dad and I found this rather nice little restaurant. Its northern Italian cuisine and its a nice mix of attentive service, nice sized portions, and good value. I've had the roasted pepper and mozzarella appetizer, which is a standard for any Italian restaurant. The tomatoes and peppers were tasty and the mozzarella was definitely fresh. I've had the seafood special twice and both times it was prepared very well. My tilapia was nothing special, but the calamari that accompanied it was cooked to perfection, not overdone and rubbery. My salmon dish was also perfectly cooked. I will say that these entrees were swimming in sauces, so any off tastes were likely covered up with the sauce flavor. The spinach and broccoli that accompanied my fish were flavorful if perhaps a bit overcooked. The restaurant is BYOB, so that's an opportunity to save some money on your dinner. The service is certainly attentive but not overbearing. I will say that both times the restaurant was nearly empty, so this may change on a crowded night. Also beware that the prices of the specials aren't advertised so expect them to be ~$8-10 more than the menu entrees. Four stars for a nice change from the chain restaurant. A nice quiet dinner prepared well but not spectacularly. read more

This isn't the first Mezzanotte that I've been to in NJ (years ago there was another), but it's definitely the best. It's a little off the beaten track, but thankfully there's a parking lot which is always a plus. The food was delish and prepared with care. The prices are modest, a nice treat. Our server (I think he was the owner) was upbeat, attentive and eager to make our experience awesome. The menu had a good mix with some unique items and others that you'd expect at a good italian dig. And then there was a long list of specials! (I never choose from the specials when the list isn't written down. If the waiter announces the list of specials, I can never keep up. And this was a long list! It goes by so quickly, I'm never done salivating about the first before I get hit with the rest. But there were probably some hidden winners there.) Universally, our group enjoyed the appetizers we selected and the dinners. All in all, a great choice. I'll definitely go back. I might even be daring and try one of those specials. read more

The worst italian meal I have had in 20 years. First of all, the place was cold and you had to wear your coat for the meal. Appetizers.......mozzarella sticks were average....not very hot. The eggplant parmagiana.................God Awful. It was cold, the layers weren't cooked,, a must miss. This was my first time at this place so I thought I would stick to basics. The chicken parmigiana was the worst I have ever had. Again, not hot and the chicken was soggy. The sauce was 2 steps below Ragu. They served with pasta. I put the pasta on my plate and the water just ran out of it onto the chicken parm. They didn't drain the pasta and it made the sauce watered down. How this place got 4 stars is a mystery to me. The only reason I tried this place is because it was a Monday night and most of the better restaurants in town are closed. Wait till Tuesday and DO NOT go to this place. read more

Our waiter took our order at approximately 730 and our main course was not served until 930. That should speak for itself. We saw tables that came in after us getting there food while we sat and waited The appetizers came out about 815 45 mins after ordering and no salad until 9 and dinner at 930. Waiting 2.5 hrs for dinner is absurd The food was mediocre Baked clams were not very good, fried calamari was good. The salads were drenched with dressing and 3 of us had a fish special the Branzini that was so dry it was terrible . Never would I recommend this to anyone read more

No apologies but he let us know that he didn't have much help in the kitchen even though we made the reservation a week prior. Food was just ok. As a large group we've been here 4-5 times but this is my last. The food is decent- I've had very good and just ok; good bread prompt water filling. But skimpy apps (3 coconut shrimp?). After waiting an 1.5 hours for food and seeing large (12) groups sit and get dinner served before us (11) and getting no good response from the owner ; I'm done. did this group preorder? We ordered almost all specials so what's the problem. Last time they actually forgot an entree and my sister ate from my plate and took her meal to go- I have never experienced such a thing. To be fair it was Sat nite but we arrived at 5:30 and ate at 7:40 and then got a bum's rush. I was in my car at 8:10 I had to ask for appetizer plates to be removed after sitting on table for 45 mins. I was really ok with it all and just figured we better find a different place for dinners until the owner tossed the check on the table without a word.
