My girlfriend and I went to Davia Restaurant in Fair Lawn, NJ over the weekend, which turned out to be a wonderful experience. The staff was very friendly and attentive to our needs. My girlfriend ordered the veal saltimbocca, which was garnished with hard boiled eggs and was a pleasant surprise because other restaurants I go to don't prepare it that way. I ordered the risotto with shrimp and scallops, which also looked amazing and I said tasted delicious. As far as we're concerned, both these dishes were a home run. Our compliment to the chef. Our dining experience there was perfect from start to finish and I will definitely give it a five star review. If you haven't been there, give it a try. You wouldn't be disappointed. Can I tell you how happy I am this wonderful restaurant literally rose from the ashes?! They had a accident that set them back for a period of time but they haven't skipped a beat upon their return as a well-established fixture here in town. Ownership here really show their labor-of-love in every aspect. And Bill is a true gentleman who'll naturally make you feel at home at Davia's. And of course, the food - both the variety on the menu and the specials - always inventive and delicious! I joined my wife and friends later in the evening and crashed their party with a quick cocktail and some dessert, but all around the table, not surprisingly, everyone loved their short rib pappardelle special and seafood dishes that evening. Bill walked over a nice Whiskey sour to help me celebrate the Giants' wild card win (watch out Eagles! ) and it was as if I were there throughout the dinner. So welcoming! This should really be a 3.5 Star review ( but I'll round up for the great service by our waiter Bill). Actually I was expecting a little more out of the experience especially since I know people who have high regards for Davia. I will note that it was closed for a small time due to a fire and that hurts a business in many ways and can take years to fully recover. Service all around was friendly. Food fairly priced. A few standouts. But this Phoenix has a but more to go to fully rise form the ashes. Bar area is approx 14 stools and seemed to be an older, more local crowd. ( it was a Wednesday). bartender seemed a bit shaky and booze, beer, and wine selections were a bit sparse. No vermouth to make me a martini, really? How's that happen ? But we come for... THE FOOD... The Shrimp & Artichoke Mustarde ( app) with a tarragon-Dijon brandy sauce was VERY good. Smaller size in portion but plenty of flavor. However the fried calamari fell flat. 99.5% sure they were frozen. The Entree menu had a nice variety of Italian dishes as well as some continental classics like Beef wellington and rack of lamb. I had the Veal Pontevecchio: medallions of veal with shrimp, spinach, sun-dried tomato in a brandy cream sauce which was very good. Another entree tried was the Chicken Due Volte which is a fried chicken cutlet, with eggplant, sausage, fresh mozzarella in a pink sauce. Sounds amazing, but was just very good. From start to finish amazing is all I can say! Bill was our waiter and he was warm and friendly . Made great recommendations , not that you can go wrong with anything here! We started with mussels which were cooked with white wine, hot peppers and plum tomatoes. To die for! Then we each had a salad and for our main course it was penne with vodka sauce and seafood risotto. Both were perfect. The worst dining experience I've ever had -- hands down. I came in with my 16-month-old baby, and despite only three tables being seated, our experience was a disaster. We ordered plain pasta and meatballs for my son, plus pizza and salmon for ourselves. The waitress completely forgot to put in our order. We waited over an hour -- with a hungry, increasingly cranky toddler -- before his food finally arrived. By then, it was too late. Our baby was upset, we were stressed, and dinner was ruined. My friend and I stopped in here before a meeting, and I have to admit that at first we were put off because even though we're in our 50s, we were the youngest people there. Then we realized that the other clientele were all there for the early bird specials, haha. I ordered the potato encrusted grouper from the specials, and it was really on point. Loved the blend of flavors! My friend ordered Tre Fungi in a sage butter cream sauce, and declared that it was to die for. We couldn't have been happier with our choices. He had red wine, I didn't partake because of my upcoming meeting. After dinner we had coffee and eschewed dessert. My partner and I have dined at this establishment 2 times since moving to Fair Lawn. We have always had a wonderful service experience, the waitstaff and bartenders are always attentive, kind and quick. The food taste delicious and fresh. I had the branzino special this most recent time and the sauce and fish were delectable, and a great portion size! My partner had the lamb and it was cooked to perfection, he also loved the salad dressing delicious, garlicky and fresh greens! Ambiance/Decor/Atmosphere: Italian-esque throw back, banquety, warm colors, high school ceiling panels, and moderately themed decoration. Davia probably prefers to stick with what works and doesn't fix it if it's not broken, so that leaves us with an outdated interior to a degree. Not a big fan of the cloth everywhere, especially when I want to wipe my nose; always feel guilty about using the cloth. Noise/sound level: When I frequented Davias it was pretty busy, but the sound level wasn't alarming or anything. Actually, it seems Davias caters to the senior crowd and by 7pm the place was pretty dead. Nothing to worry about here at all. Menu: The menu is comprised of a sexy variety of Italian and American fare from cold to hot apps, soup, salads, chicken, meat, seafood, and of course pasta. The menu has many interesting choices for repeat visits. Service: The servers and hostesses are very warm, nice, informative, friendly, and welcoming. These are happy people that want to do their job well and keep the customers happy. Ticket times were standard and the pace was relaxing overall. Food: I had the lamb chop special and my wife had the beefy wellington special. This is one time where the online menu is of no help, as when I wanted to order the lamb the waitress told me the price was $10 higher. I had the lamb mid-rare and the temp was spot on. But, it was a little bland; spinach side was the best part of the meal and I bet that only cost a handful of dollars. Lamb itself is over rated and at $40 even more so. My wife's wellington was mushy from the bearnaise by the time she got to eat it, but flavors were good. Bar: Full Price: If you do not take into consideration the early bird special aiming for specific clientele many items on the menu are pretty expensive. And, some of them aren't justified either. Overall: Just a decent experience overall, nothing really memorable and special. I just reviewed the menu again and the same specials are there from a year ago. Changing with the trends doesn't seem to be something Davias does, and if that works great. But, I can't see myself really returning for Italian fare since there are a multitude of places like that around here. read more

We got takeout on a Saturday evening and were totally disappointed. The quality of the food for the price ($15-20 per plate) is subpar. The Primavera dish was full of grey, overcooked vegetables. The chicken we added to the dish was boiled, not grilled, and hadn't been cleaned of the cartilage. The Della Casa dish featured what seemed like canned roasted peppers, pink translucent tasteless tomatoes, and, once again, boiled - not grilled - chicken with cartilage attached. The house salad seemed like it was pulled out of a bag and topped with a rubbery cucumber slice. The garlic bread was okay, nothing special. It melted the styrofoam container it was placed in, so I might've have some styrofoam with my dinner. The best part was the service: The phone order was the best I've ever had taken. My Dad and I have been long time patrons of this restaurant so it it time that I give to Davia their five stars. As Sunday night restaurant regulars, we've developed a relationship with our waiter. Bill knows that Dad and I are martini drinkers, so he is sure to check that is still our cocktail as we are seated and has our martinis served within minutes. Dad typically orders steak and now Bill knows exactly how Dad likes it prepared - medium well. Davia takes my Dad's request for specific vegetables on his plate as well - we feel like royalty eating there. We've taken to starting our dinner with the tempura zucchini appetizer. It is very lightly battered and fried and comes with a miso dipping sauce which is more like a wasabi dipping sauce. Dad has learned a new trick as he has really taken to the wasabi sauce. It has become a favorite of ours. I will bounce between ordering the osso bucco, filet mignon, or once in a while the tuna or branzino. The osso bucco falls neatly off the bone and always melts in my mouth. My medium rare steak is always prepared perfectly - nicely pink inside and a nice char on the outside. The few times I've had fish it has been a nice change - again prepared on point. My Dad has sent his steak back a few times for some additional cooking and that is happily done. All in all, Davia is our regular joint, and Dad and I never feel rushed when we are there. We specifically ask for time to enjoy our martinis before placing our food orders and our request is happily met. I heartily recommend Davia to anyone looking for a really nice North Jersey Italian restaurant. read more

Old school Italian dining at its finest. I had the Rigatoni Bolognese and was very satisfied with it. I'm very particular when it comes to my pasta. Too many places will not properly drain the pasta and leave a pool of water on the bottom, but not Davia. The bread appetizer is also very good, I usually only take a bite or two of appetizer bread but here, I had it all with room for more. Went there for a Mother's Day dinner, party of 6. They had 3 seatings, 12, 3 and 6. We did the 6 PM seating so it really felt like dinner. Let me start with the negative because there is only one. They cram too many tables too close together. It seemed that I was constantly being jostled by the person sitting behind or a waiter trying to get to another table to do something. Now the positives and there are lots of them. The food is outstanding, maybe better. They had a special menu for the holiday but there were about 20 choices including chicken, beef, seafood,pasta - I'm sure I'm missing something. In our group of 6, there were 2 Branzino, 1 salmon, 1 filet of sole with crabmeat, a veal Parm and chicken Marsala. The portion was either sufficient or huge. All the dishes came with a small salad. The branzino was over spinach and may have been the best I ever had and the portion size was huge. Everybody really liked their dishes. Price was pretty reasonable especially considering it was a holiday and the service was good especially considering how crowded it was. People on other reviews mentioned the early bird dinner. I'm told you get the same quality food for a low price and this includes an appetizer and dessert also although a smaller entree size. You cannot make the food at home for that price and almost certainly not as good. Parking is a little tricky. There's a small lot plus street parking. We got lucky as someone was pulling out of a spot right in front. Otherwise it could have been a minor inconvenience. All in all a great local restaurant. I later learned that it is made in house. Choice of salad dressing was a bit limited. Portions were large and the food was delicious. Pork chops were large and juicy. This place was a total nightmare. Went for a celebration dinner and went to the early bird special. The waiter kept looking at his watch and told us you better do this before 6pm. We then ordered and told us several times prices go up next week . He threw spoons at us and was the rudest service ever. If you enjoy terrible rude abusive service mediocre food and an inclusive tip for the waiter literally being abusive make sure you stop by this place. Davia is your typical neighborhood Italian eatery in Jersey. Having visited with a group of about 9 people to celebrate a friend's birthday, I can't say anything bad about the experience. However I can't remember anything exceptional about it either. I do remember that the waiter accidentally spilled a glass of wine on me (and the management offered to pay for my dry cleaning) but aside from that it was a typical dinner. The dish that I ordered was beef short ribs with red cabbage. The meat was cooked nice and tender and the cabbage wasn't mushy however the flavor could have been bolder. Now I know that isn't specific enough so maybe I have to add in more details. I like my short ribs, especially one sitting in some kind of red wine reduction sauce, to exude a delicate balance of salty, sour, and umami flavor. Perhaps a hint of sweetness would also be warranted. Instead what I got from the dish was one note--simply an earthy tone and no complexity. Maybe I'm judging too harshly here but I do have a developed palate and I know my dish could have been better. As for my other compatriots, they shared the same sentiment. The food we got from the kitchen made for an enjoyable meal. Coupled with the fantastic service we got from this place, and I have no hesitation in making a return visit. If you are in the area then this Italian restaurant is a good bet for a nice dinner. It may not have wowed me but in the end it certainly still deserves a solid three stars in my book. read more

Kicked off Memorial Day Weekend by going out to have dinner at Davia's. First time that we have eaten dinner at this restaurant. We got there around 7:00pm on Friday and was immediately seated by the hostess who was very friendly and nice. Karen, our waitress, took our drink order as we perused the menu. Davia's is an Italian restaurant but we decided to order the soft-shell crabs and liver and bacon. I must say that I absolutely hate liver and bacon and it's never served in our house so when it's on the menu and it is noted as a house specialty, my better half usually orders the dish. The meals come with your choice of soup or salad. We both went with salads with crumbled blue and it was delicious. Our dinners came and all I can say is that my wife said it was one of the best liver and bacon dinners she ever had and my soft shell crabs in a scampi sauce was very good. I noticed that the wait staff knew most of the people having dinner. The restaurant has a family/ homey feel and we felt the same. Very comfortable dining.
