I got a Shellac, Gabriela did my nails and she was fantastic. I also got a massage at the end with some mango butter which was completely natural and didn't irritate my skin at all (I've got very sensitive skin). This is by far the best nail salon I have been to. I've recently stopped wearing artificial nails. I wanted to find a place that cared about the health of my nails, but also made them look amazing; and I've found that now + more! I walked in was greeted and assisted in picking my color. I was offered a beverage. And I was then seated almost immediately. The lady that did my nails was kind and soft spoken. She did an amazing job with the meticulous application of my nail polish. Making sure to apply in thin coats and paying attention to the edges. After my shellac had set, I received an amazing hand massage with oil, and a warm towel to top it off. The lady at the register- who I presume is the owner, was very sweet as well. And they have a credit card machine, which is a plus. I bite my nails and I have gnarly toes, so when my girly friend announced, "let's get mani pedis!" I was hit with a rush of sadness and shame. I would love to be one of the pretty-nailed ladies unabashedly flailing their shiny nails around town, I'd love to beckon a gentleman with the wave of a perfectly manicured finger. But I am not one of them. No, I am not a manicured maiden. Or so I thought. Rosie was the first to assess the situation. As I sat in the fancy pedi-chair, Rosie asked me to put on the headphones and prepare myself for a spiritual toe-voyage into a dream filled with Enya sounds and rhythmic chair massages. Rosie and I didn't talk much, but I'm pretty sure it's because she was busy catching her breath the whole time she scrubbed away at my feet. On she trudged applying lotions, ground cornmeal (no joke), and finally the blue polish I selected for my toes. They're brilliant. Next, I walked my sorry fingers over to Colombian Karina. Without even mentioning their dire condition, she applied creams and massaged my hands (like they even deserved it). We chatted along, about our similar ethnic background, about the machete she wishes she had with which to cut the coconuts, about sports, the weather, and love. It was a very human experience. She prodded me to go with a french manicure until finally, I didn't say (but said) "oui s'il vous plaît." I literally just walked in the door from my coconut manicure at Tierra Mia and I feel positively blissful. As if that didn't justify my visit enough, my nails look flawless. That's no easy feat, especially when the shade is dark. And speaking of which, one of the things I love about this salon is that you are guided through the polishes and encouraged to check them out on your nail first before committing to a color. This nail place is how it's done. It's posh and beautiful, while also providing a healthy environment for manicures and pedicures. As a green wellness professional, I'd stopped getting my nails done years ago because of the toxins involved. But when I discovered that everything here is green, even the structure (reclaimed wood floors and all sorts of other wonderful green touches), I was sold. No nasty nail salon smell, either. The polishes they use are all natural, also. Not just dibutyl phthalate, formaldehyde and toluene-free (which is what I have to settle for at most nail salons that claim they have natural polishes). I also like that they make many of their treatment products fresh from fruit during your manicure/pedicure. I got to spend some time with the owners because I did a web show on the place (that's how I discovered it) and they are passionate and serious about what they do. Some businesses are just trying to cash in on the green movement, but these guys are the real deal. I'm going to miss this place when I move to Los Angeles. One thing to remember - water-based nail polish needs to be removed after five days even if the pedicure looks wonderful or it will ADHERE to your nails and be damn near impossible to remove. My husband took me here for my birthday. We both got the coconut pedicures and manicures. This place is fantastic. It is decorated beautifully, smells clean and clear of any toxic smells. Everyone was so friendly and nice. Karina did my manicure and she was an absolute sweetheart and a pro at what she is doing. The coconut massage on your arms and hands is amazing. The color of polish was beautiful and my nails looked like a million dollars. My husbands fingernails were perfect and are still shining even without any polish. For the pedicure Karina switched and did my husband's pedicure while the woman that did his hands now took care of my feet. I feel horrible that I don't remember her name. I am one of those people that is too embarassed to reask someone their name. But she was wonderful too. We both loved the pedicure and the massage. Justin, whom I believe is Karina's fiance was so nice and I think he really made my husband feel very at home there. We left there like we were walking on air and will be back soon. I went to Karina for nails when she was at Rescue Rittenhouse and really missed her after she left. I've had my nails done at a ton of different places, in many cities, and she really is one of the best techs. I was extremely happy when I discovered that she is the owner of this new(ish) spa. I went to get a mani right away. And it was fantastic. But for one nail clipped just a little too short, I can't find fault with anything else (and this, in and of itself, unusual!). My cuticles were well taken care of; the massage was awesome, the color is great, and so far (24 hours and a couple of hot showers later) the dark polish is still there. After she was done applying color, she even applied cuticle oil -- because they do get dry by the end of the treatment! That was a super nice touch. Apparently, Karina was also happy to see me, since she gave me a 20% discount, which was totally unexpected but much appreciated. She showed me around the spa and I noted that they only have one pedi chair. You can come with a friend, but one of you would not get the full benefit of the treatment. I know I reviewed Tierra Mia in February, but that was my first time having a Brazilian with Karina. I decided to provide an update because, since then, I've been going for a Brazilian and underarms every 3-5 weeks. Nothing's changed except that I've moved to DC but still go to Tierra Mia for my waxing. I have been getting waxed for the past 4-5 years and have never been this consistent. I'm consistent because I don't have an excuse not to be. I don't dread going for fear of how painful it's going to be or how astronomical the cost. Those were probably the two top reasons for my previous inconsistency. I don't think waxing can be completely painless because hair is being ripped off of your vajay-jay but she takes extra steps to ensure that you tolerate it as much as possible. That's why it's worth every penny! The staff is always friendly and offer cold water while you wait (I've read other reviews where patrons were offered chocolate and other fancy stuff although I can't comment on it). It's always clean, and most importantly, Karina is always professional but warm. read more

When reading Yelp reviews before my first ever brazilian wax, Tierra Mia was an obvious choice. Everything you read on here is absolutely true: -Karina is adorable, professional, and explains every part of the process -The place is so cute and obviously very clean without feeling (or smelling) like an obgyn office -The price is comparable to others in the area, if not cheaper than some swanky Rittenhouse establishments The other comment left repeatedly by reviewers is the the process is painless. Listen, dolls. You are ripping hair out of your hoo-ha. It hurts. Not hurts as in "Oh my lord, I'm going to have to walk out of here half-waxed because I can't take it!"... but hurts as in "Hey, everyone who said this didn't hurt at all: LIES!" However, Karina totally prepared me for when it was going to be most painful, so I was ready. I am writing this review a little late but wanted to make sure to give credit where credit is due. As a small business owner, I know the importance of great and honest feedback! I came here based on other Yelp reviews because I won't go to a salon or spa without first reading thoroughly through reviews. Obviously you get people who will complain no matter what or are very particular (and that's totally fine) but you should be open minded when reading reviews. I do feel that if you have a bad experience with any business, it is best to confront the business about your concerns first before expressing them publicly. If they don't respond or offer a chance to redeem themselves, then by all means, let us all know! Please! Yes, this place is a bit small and I can certainly see how it might get cramped but having had a chance to meet and speak with the owners, I can tell that they care a great deal about their customers comfort level so I know they would never over book the place. You are greeted warmly and offered coffee and chocolate samples (for a very small fee of $1 ea - TOTALLY worth it). Then when I was taken back for my Bagazo Del Coconut pedicure, I met Karina, who is totally adorable and sweet. I loved talking to her throughout the pedicure and getting to know a bit more about Columbia and their culture. Karina explained a lot about the products they use and why they are environmentally safe - this was interesting and I really appreciated their efforts to educate clients. The service was great and the non-toxic nail polish lasted WEEKS! I will absolutely return (once my busy schedule calms down) and I hope to make this a lasting relationship with their business. I look forward to watching them grow and hope they become one of Philly's most popular spas!! I went to Tierra Mia and had the coconut mani/pedi. The place is small, but I think that works in its favor making it a more intimate experience. I got there a little early and didn't have to wait long. There are two chairs in the backroom for pedicures. These chairs are awesome. They were comfortable and easily adjustable. The coconut oil applied was organic and felt wonderful and made my skin glow. Rosie gave me a mini leg massage which also felt wonderful. The coconut scrub looked yummy enough to eat! It is an effective exfoliator. While she was buffing my nails, the buffer fell, the owner was passing by and just automatically picked it up and threw it out while Rosie was simultaneously reaching for a new one. This was a big positive for me. My feet had been neglected for some time, but she put in the time and effort to get my feet looking and feeling right. My hands got the same loving attention. When discussing the color that I had chosen for my fingernail, Rosie let me know that that color was not pink tinted as I thought but was actually sheer. She helped me choose the right color I was looking for. The nail polishes are water based, eliminating the toxic fumes that are usually associated with nail salons. However, because of the different base in the nail polish, it requires special care. I was told how to care for my nails in the first 12 hrs to help the curing process. While my fingernails were drying, Justin came over and offered me a delightful Colombian drink made of sugar cane juice and limes, and a piece of dark chocolate. We also chatted briefly about where the sugar cane came from in Colombia. He was quite personable and checked with me if I had been told about the curing process. I'm really impressed with this place. I don't mind spending a little more if the place is clean and well run. I've had a few horror stories from cheap, fast and unclean places so I've become VERY picky about where I will go for a mani/pedi, and this is where I will return. Well done, Tierra Mia! read more

I just moved out of Philadelphia, and this is one place I'll miss for sure. I've gotten a few manicures and brow waxes here during my year in Philadelphia, and there's nowhere else in the city I'd recommend for those services. The employees here are warm and friendly, the shop is cute and super clean, and they have several creative manicures and pedicures to choose from (go coconut, you won't regret it). One thing that's especially nice is that the employees at Mi Cumbia speak English (and at least a couple speak Spanish). This isn't one of those salons where you struggle to ask questions or convey what you want because nobody there speaks much English. It's not that I dislike people from other cultures, but I hate trying to conduct transactions with people who may or may not understand what I'm saying. The other thing that's great at Mi Cumbia (and very rare in salons) is that they're extremely conscious of the environment, the toxicity of certain products, and what's best for your overall hair/skin/nail health. I've seen places where they use a dremel to remove old polish (throwing up all kinds of hazardous dust and killing your nail bed), and I can't even imagine something like that happening here. Overall, highly recommended. Don't even shop around, just go here. You'd be hard-pressed to find anywhere else that's comparable. read more

Simply THE BEST manicure in Philadelphia. The quality of the manicure and overall experience are fantastic. Have you ever wanted to have a relaxing manicure and found that the experience was hectic, the salon phone was constantly chirping, and you were rushed out so the next customer could have your seat? Well there's none of that here. If you can imagine getting a manicure in a yoga studio, that's what Mi Cumbia is like. The staff is warm and friendly without being intrusive, and they were beyond patient when I was trying to decide between 10 different nail polish colors. The atmosphere is soothing and relaxing. Fantastic experience! Planned a small bachelorette party for five girls to get manis and pedis done. Armed with a few bottles of champagne, and we were ready to go! The owner was super friendly to work with, very organized, and made the afternoon very relaxing. Champagne kept pouring, and the staff that did our services were phenomenal! I never got shellac on my nails, and now I'm a huge fan! It's been a few days, and no chips in sight! I rarely get manicures done for that reason, and now I am hooked! Okay. I'll give you that there is something that isn't perfect about this place - it's a bit pricey. Now that THAT's out of the way, notice that it still gets 5 stars. You get what you pay for because... 1) All the manicurists are SO skilled. I call for appointments and have no preference for who I see, because I've never been disappointed. 2) The fun and organic treatments are wonderful. And, as I tell all my friends, after my first foot massage here my life was never the same. 3) They offer you coffee or herbal tea when you walk in. Take the coffee. It's good. 4) Everyone is SO friendly, and always upbeat and in a good mood. And they're funny. Makes getting a pedi that much more fun. 5) This is small, but they have more than your typical Cosmos and People magazine (do they even have People magazine) for you during-pedi reading...love that they have Travel & Leisure - I actually have something to read there! 6) Lastly, the best part - there's no formaldehyde lingering in the air, threatening to knock you out with a cancer-causing punch the second you walk in. Honestly i think this place would do much better as a coffee shop. I wanted a treat, and I didn't want to feel guilty. This place should have fit the bill (eco friendly, suistainable, and . but it didn't. A $20 pedi at the local Vietnamese place is better. the coconut and pumice massage consisted of a once over rub of the coconut meat that had been sitting in the fridge for who knows how long (fresh coconut should be fragrant! theirs was anything but). It felt like nothing... seriously, buy yourself an exfoliating glove from the dollar store and you'll feel better. The polishes they use are all available commercially (ie zoya at artofbeauty.com, they also have codes and deals often) , as is the coconut oil (in the baking or natural food aisle of your supermarket). The person who did my nails pretty much just applied polish, there was no treatment whatsoever, and for the price of their service, more was expected. My left pinky nail has a slight crack in it, and most nail techs usually make it look like it never happened, however, the person at this salon not only did nothing, but it ended up looking like there was a different color polish on that toenail because of her negligence. The only saving grace however, was the coffee. I am a self professed coffee addict and the selection I've had here on various visits has been amazing. Better than other specialty coffee shops in the city, and brewed to perfection (Sorry La Colombe). That said, I doubt i'll be returning, price to value wasn't good at all. read more

Am I the only one who walked in here and thought I had the wrong address because of the coffee and chocolate on the wall? Hahaha. Seriously, though, I came here for a wax procedure, as my regular place was closed for renovations, and my two back-up places were unable to accommodate me, as their waxologists (yep, I just invented that word) were on vacation. I must say, I was a little hesitant about their organic theme. I always just kind of assumed that you needed chemicals for anything to actually work. You're probably guessing where I'm going with this...but I was wrong! So, i walked to Tierra Mia (or is it Mi Cumbia? A little confused about the name...), which is a few blocks off Rittenhouse Square. I almost would have missed the brick storefront, since it's in a little residential neighborhood. I was immediately greeted by Sebastian (yes, that's his name! Love it...and he's really cool--I spoke to him on the phone when I scheduled, and then forgot the time of, my appointment.) He offered me a drink, which is almost always the sign of a classy establishment. The place is a little small but definitely cozy and comfortable. A minute later, I met Karina, who is their waxer. She was very sweet and friendly, but the best part of all is that a procedure which usually hurts a whole lot didn't hurt nearly as much as some of the more expensive Rittenhouse Square spas. I think they use some kind of soy wax, which I assumed would be painful and possibly ineffective, but I was so wrong. The procedure was super-quick and pleasant, and it was about $30 less expensive than the "high-end" Rittenhouse places. All this to say, I found my new wax place! =D I'm still a little hesitant about getting a mani/pedi here, since it sounds like it's a little extra work with the type of polish they use. But considering everything they use is food or smells like it, I don't know if I'll be able to hold out for too long. OK - I take back some of what I said. After a year has passed - I returned to Tierra Mia today and found a few things have changed. The icy-cold receptionist is gone (YAY) and I was treated very well during my visit today. I started with a $58 pedicure with the coconut oil & fresh coconut shavings as the exfoliant. It was done by Karina herself and was FANTASTIC. I hope the polish will wear well - as my feet feel FAB-U-LOUS. Again - I reiterate the pedicure chair she bought has sounds therapy - ask for the headphones - that vibrates in time to relaxing music. It is a reall cool, wonderful pedicure chair. I would pay money just to come and sit in it for a while. After my pedi - which took about 60 minutes, I got the seasonal cucumber mani. It was $28 and used pure shea butter, sea salt and cruished cucumbers (they put it in a food processor). Very cooling and wonderful for summer. Justin - Karina's fiance was there - and he is a very nice guy and runs things well. It's a beautiful (pricey) spa. I am fearful the polish will yellow or chip. (I told them about my previous experience with yellowing - and they said NO SUNSCREEN or bug spray. Turns out I had, indeed, applied sunscreen after my services a year ago - MY BAD!) I still wish we could bring our own polish - and I kinda thing it's ridiculous that for the MONEY we are paying (I dropped $100 even today including tip) we can't use our OPI or CND products for fear of destrying her air quality. That still seems a bit wrong, but anyway - If I can get a decent wear out of her products (all water based polishes), I will come back again. I used to hate getting a manicure. I loved the results, but hated the experience of every other establishment: rushed, maybe clean?!?, no regard for chemicals, unfriendly and awkward. Mi Cumbia Organica has changed that. I couldn't recommend them more. They are super warm and welcoming and have a wide variety of safe polishes to choose from. Super clean and quaint inside. It doesn't smell like a nail salon. Very spa like in a beautiful and friendly way. The staff is amazing. They have delicious coffee and chocolate and gorgeous jewelry for sale. I'll never go anywhere else!!! OH! And one time I messed up my appointment time. 100% my fault. This salon in a one-of-a-kind establishment. Katrina, the owner, provides excellent waxing services. I just moved here from California and was nervous to find a new place for my brazilians. Katrina explained the entire job she was about to preform ahead of time and really informed me on aftercare, etc. She was fast, friendly, and most importantly professional. I'd never been so satisfied leaving a salon. Their customer service is also great. Typically with mom-and-pop places, I find the customer service to be inconsistent. That is definitely not the case with Mi Cumbia Organica. Alecia, one of the appointment bookers, is very accommodating and helpful. I forgot my credit card at home (a very embarrassing whoopsy), and she offered to have me call her from my house with the number once I got home. I wound up calling my boyfriend while I was there and giving her the number that way, but it was still an incredibly trusting offer. No one made me feel awkward or stupid for having left the card at home. Lastly, I want to applaud them on their organic nail services. I got a pedicure for the first time last night, and my experience was delightful. The nail technician, Blanca, was very genuine and conversational. She did a fantastic job on my feet (a weird thing to say, I know) and there wasn't any chemical, plug-your-nose, here comes cancer, smell. She took her time and paid great attention to detail. OK. I am simply an aspiring restaurant reviewer. My yelps are almost entirely food. A bit bored in the city, decided to give a pedicure a try. I have never had one and it was time to splurge. I had my friend and his son join in the fun. The three of us had quite the treat. The owners/hosts made us feel at home, along with their fantastic team. We went with both special treatments of both manicures and pedicures. But first, they offer us a drink popular in Columbia (the owners home). It has sugar cane that is boiled and reduced to a syrup and is then mixed with fresh lime and water. Awesome. First the manicure. I had the coconut treatment. Besides a perfect manicure, coconut oil is brushed then massged into your skin, then fresh coconut flakes are rubbed in to exfoliate. Next the pedicure. Nice cushy massage chairs allow you to control settings. I had the Cumbia. Along with a pedicure, cucumber puree is massaged into your legs and feet along with cucumber slices placed between your toes. I was apprehensive about getting the pedicure because I have very tickly feet. Besides a moment or two my feet were not sensitive and I found the treatment (and my neglected feet) to be very relaxing. I enjoy a good massage maybe once or twice a year. This experience provides a similar level of indulgence. I do hope to schedule some more in the near future. This place is all organic. Even better. I highly recommend this place for bikini waxing (and probably anything else they do, but waxing is all I've tried there). Karina is pleasant and professional, and chats while she works, which distracts you from what's going on down there. She also explains what she's going to do, so it's super comfortable even for first-timers. Go there if you've never done this before and want to make sure your first time doesn't scare you off for life. I also highly recommend Mi Cumbia's waxing for those with super-sensitive skin, like me, because I had very minimal irritation, thanks to the good ingredients they use. They give you a (free) refreshing/sterilizing cream to use after the treatment to make sure your pores don't get infected. I am tremendously disappointed in this place. A friend recommended it to me and speaks highly of it, but I had a terrible experience. First, I booked both a gel removal and a shellac manicure, but when I arrived was immediately made to feel uncomfortable about the time it would take to remove my gels, even though it was just regular gel polish and always comes off easily, and I had booked a removal. Instead of letting the polish soak properly (I didn't even get full five minutes of soaking), the technician proceeded to chip and peel off the polish with a metal tool. I could easily see that the nails were damaged after she finished and now they feel weak and painful -- it will be a miracle if they don't break by the end of the week. The tech was then sloppy and rushed (I'm sure it didn't help that someone, I assume the manager, announced loudly that she was running behind precisely by six minutes during my service), made the shape uneven, got nail polish on my skin, and debris in the polish. I then asked for a third coat because the polish was sheer and was told there wasn't time, although there wasn't anyone waiting. It takes two minutes to apply another coat. The cherry on top was that this was by far the most expensive gel manicure I have ever gotten. In short, if they have an issue with overbooking or scheduling, it shouldn't be taken out on the client. I can deal with a bad manicure, but not when it actually damages my nails. read more

I get my Brazilian wax here and while I've had multiple Brazilian waxes done in my time, no where else is as gentle, as thorough, and as efficient. I will go to no other! I also get my nails done here more so than any other nail salon. My experience here with all of their services is excellent. I'm a Virgin to bikini waxing so needless to say that I was terrified! Karina is an angel who made me now love waxing! The entire experience was warm, welcoming and informative! I learned so much about my hair and it's growth and how to properly love it! Karina also made my experience virtually pain free and afterwards I felt like I was floating on cloud nine. My friend had an appointment after mine and we met up for lunch and confessed that we wish we could be naked to show off our brand new selves :-) We'll both be back for follow up in four to six weeks. Top Notch in every way. I planned a party for 6 friends to get mani/pani and itcouldn't have been more perfect. They allow you to bring in your own food and beverages for private parties and even served the champagne for us. I think the owners are just really nice people and that tone from the top trickles down to all the employees. One of the best experiences that you may possibly get around town when it comes to mani and pedi. On top of that you get not to smell the fumes that are in nail polishes which are truly harmful. Especially for pregnant women. Let's not speak about all the other harmful things that you get by the nail polish remover and the lotion they put on you in any other nail salon. For these reasons, I would like to get them done at Mi Cumbia from now on. The girls that work here are very kind and want you to relax while they do their job. They take very good care of their customers. What I like the most here is the fact that you get to experience an enjoyable, relaxing pampering of yourself. I got the mimos pedicura and coconut manicura. While I was getting my manicura, almost fell asleep. I was in another world! A little something that I didn't like was the fact that the manicurista didn't push/cut my cuticles. My nails looked shorter than they actually are. Will make sure to let them know next time, though. So, while it may seem that I lack credibility due to the fact that this is my first and therefore only review, I want it to be noted that I've joined Yelp primarily to rave about Tierra Mia/Mi Cumbia. Having moved from Manhattan a few years back I was shocked and terrified at a couple things with regards to the brazilian wax options available in Philly: A. The duct tape stories! Who the ef uses duct tape in that area!? Not only is that incredibly ghetto, it is unbelievably psychotic! B. The price. I think that has to do with the lack of options and not many places offering this type of wax. C. The time. A lot of places that had solid reviews and one place that I tried out (Body Sanctuary) stated the wax would take approximately 45 mins to an hour. Which,by the way, is preposterous! Let me preface by explaining that there were a few places in NY i frequented where the quality of the wax was stellar, the prices varied between $35-$60 and took anywhere between 15 mins to 30 mins. At Mi Cumbia, i had my wax with Karina. The wax itself was great quality and literally as painless as wax can be. She was full of tips and very helpful at making it a very relaxing and pleasant experience. She provided me with lotion for afterwards as well. While it took a little while it was nowhere near the alleged 45 mins other places stated. It was, without a doubt, THE BEST brazilian I've ever had,and at $65, a steal if you really consider the other options. Also, I think the first time is $10 more than usual, but I wouldn't quote that. Was treated here for a birthday gift and had a manicure and pedicure done.. no gels or anything, I don't even think they offer that, as a organic place. Very clean, inviting atmosphere. Very nice women who work there too. They are gentle, careful, and attentive. While I appreciate that they are using water-based nail stuff, the fact is that it just doesn't last that long. Still, it was very relaxing and at least, the nail color was easy to pick off by hand a few days later. read more

Love that I found this organic nail salon!! No overwhelming toxic fumes (actually, no fumes at all) and the mani/pedi service was superb. Added bonus, I definitely recommend the $1 Colombian coffee during your service...is delicious. There are two types of non-toxic nail polish to choose from. I went with the Zoya and my mother-in-law went with the other water-based one (apparently you should not get it wet for around 12 hours after application). She noticed that, due to the extreme humidity over the following days, the nail polish curled right up off her fingernails approximately three days after application. It was fine on her toes though. Just something to be aware of. The Zoya worked great for me and lasted as long as any other toxic nail polish. The prices are a little more expensive than a typical nail salon; however, as nail salons are traditionally the most toxic and unhealthy beauty places, it is definitely worth it.
