I had lived in a nearby apartment when the building was a subway and I tell you my mind was blown by the transformation of the place. As a cafe, the place is so cute. The coffees were refreshing, and the pastelitos are some of the best pastries in all of Washington. While they have a small menu, I would not consider it restrictive as much as I would consider it finely curated. The staff were friendly and the owner was so welcoming even to a small family with baby strapped to me. Had the classic Cuban sandwich, and if you've ever seen the movie Chef and wondered what Cuban food was like, you've got a wonderful opportunity downtown. Miami Cuban approved. I've lived in WA for 5 years, always missing the taste of home and Mi Luna has it. A beautiful family owned restaurant with photos of the owners family and decore was super cute and thoughtful, celebrating Cuban heritage but in a modern way. My husband and were greeted by the owner and served by her daughter. Made me and my husband feel like part of the family the way that they attended to us. The food was espectacular. We went all out and had the (huge) croquetas, tostones, tostada, Cuban sandwich and vaca frita. All delicious!! It felt like something that would come out of my abuela's cocina, authentically plated and presented. We had the opportunity to try the pastelitos and when I tell you they are the best on the west coast, I'm not lying (watch out Portos). They were SO flakey and the flavors (queso y guava and coco) shine! Merch is very good quality and I bought myself a souvenir. My only gripe is I wish they had online ordering because it was so busy and loud that it was difficult for them to hear me well when placing my order over the phone. Oh. My. God. The food was AMAZING! My wife and I stopped here to try it. The place was PACKED, which is a good sign. I got the Rope Vieja bowl and my wife got the Classic Cuban sandwich. The Cuban was very favorable, generous portions of meat, and nice and tender. It's served with fried plantains (which my wife said we're good, and I'll take her word for it). The Ropa Vieja plate was incredible. The meat was nice and tender, with a flavor profile that just hit on all the right notes. I got it with black beans, which were seasoned perfectly and also tasted amazing. It comes with a cilantro lime crema that my wife and I wanted to get bottles of, it's that good. The portions were generous as well. The restaurant is where a Subway used to be, but you would never know it if you weren't from the area. It's roomy inside, with a decent amount of seating. We missed it twice and were able to finally try this place out. We were excited because we do miss our Porto's (iykyk). We got 2 pastelito de carnes- flavor was good but the puff pastry was soggy. I bit into it thinking it was going to be flaky crunchy but it was soggy pastry and kind of disappointed. It needs to be like in a warmer of one sort and not just a glass case. Onto the classic Cuban. The bread was nicely toasted and the meat was soft. A little too much mustard for my liking but the pickles were delicious. The cheese were melted perfectly and gave it a nice cheese pull, but for some reason one sandwich was a bit bland but the condiments were perfect and the other half was salty so I picked at it. The hubs got the pan con lechon and it was a little sweet but I think I liked that one better. I wish we had fried plantain chips instead of the fried bananas because I think the crunchiness was better suited with the sandwiches than the mushiness of the fried plantain. There was like a green dipping sauce and it was really tasty and helped cut the fattiness of the pork and cleanse the palate. It was a bit pricey but there aren't other Cuban sandwiches around. This scratches the itch but I wouldn't go out of my way to come here. When you walk in you're suppose to grab a menu, then order at the counter, and then take a seat. We kinda just grabbed the menu and sat down a while before we realized we were suppose to order at the counter (there was a sign with instructions and I did read it, but for some reason I wasn't comprehending it so it was definitely my fault). I think this place is great. First off I have to say I've read people complaining about the noise which is wild to me. I have never heard "New Cuban spot in town" and thought to myself "wow that sounds like it is going to be a quiet, mellow place to eat" I love the vibrancy of the place. It has life. It's simple, clean and has a bright vibe that stands out in downtown Olympia. The food was really good! I had the ropa vieja on two occasions and the pastelito del carne once. Very good! This is definitely gonna be a regular spot. You do have to grab your own menu and order at the counter. That's how they do it, I don't get why people complain about that, the staff is friendly.
