We chose the last meal of our visit to Austin randomly and were not disappointed. I ordered a chicken rito, guacamole, and horchata. I loved it all. The guacamole was some of the best I've had and I cant even really pinpoint why except for that it was fresh, a little sour; just the right flavoring. Stopped in for lunch about 1:00. Place was dead a four topper in the corner and us. Service was good the food came quick but nobody was there. I had the taco salad. Shredded lettuce that had been soaking in water, some matchstick carrots on top and a couple of wedges of some really Brown avocado. And then heaped to the side was a meat paste that had little flavor. My wife has the enchiladas said the black beans were okay the rice had a good flavor but was real soft. Been to Mi Madres several times over the last few years and it's one of my favorite local Tex-Mex spots in east Austin! Went there with my dad and wife over the weekend and had the Saltillo dip - it is so dangerous! We filled up before we even got our entrees haha. I was up in Austin in June visiting my old roommate and seeing Muse in concert. Yes, I do try to tear myself away from dateline and my couch once in a while. So, after a night of Muse and 30 Seconds to Mars, we woke up hungry (but not hungover). I sense this place would be great for nursing one of those. I honestly don't remember what I ordered but it was good. Being that I am from San Antonio, I know good Tex-Mex. So, I am ALWAYS skeptical elsewhere. This place had good chips and salsa. I like that the alvocados were fresh. Tortillas tasted great. Our server was pretty good on making sure drinks were full and the food came out pretty fast. No alcohol or outdoor seating for us. Not that I live under a rock or anything, but when the two of us couldn't slip into the bar, patio, or even a shared table on a Friday night at 5:46 without a reso or hour+ wait at two different East Manor places, I'm thinking "Damn, Austin's grown up." Oh, it's all good, and one more reason to use that Open Table app. So as we strolled past Mi Madre's & their "Now Serving Dinner" banner, I knew Ashley S & Courtney W had given this place five stars, so what the heck - it was worth a shot. I confess I'm not the biggest fan of Tex-Mex unless it's breakfast stuff, but the staff was friendly, we got a table, and the place was packed within ten minutes after being seated. Count my salsa blessings here. And the salsa's yummy, incidentally. The chile Relleno was good, and the special duck enchilada with mole sauce was interesting & creative. We had two different sides of beans - they were black & borracho, I think - and both were excellent. I was tempted to ask for big bowls of them with a stack of tortillas. We did seem to attract other people's orders to our table, but I'll attribute that to a new dinner service doing crowded house. Apps are half price with $5 margaritas during Happy Hour, and that's a deal. But I do hear Mi Madre's does great Tex-Mex breakfast & brunch stuff that's worth checking out. I've had the beef fajita, chicken fajita, migas, and the barbacoa and none of them have disappointed. You could close your eyes and point and still land on a winner! They have a pretty large space, too. You may think the inside is crowded, until they take you to the back area and you see that they have a huge dining room just hiding out. I'm ashamed to admit it, but I have never been to Mi Madre's. Oh yes, I've heard good things about their breakfast tacos, but never made the trip over to Manor. Finally we made the move - Sunday brunch. If you follow them on Twitter, @mimadres, they post really good information about taco specials and other good things you want to know about. I saw the post on Sunday - Mexican eggs Benedict was the special of the day. I wasn't sure what was in it, but it sounded delightful. We start off with Ruta Maya coffee and horchata. Oh it was so good! The coconut milk and cinnamon stick was a pleasant addition to the usual chunky mess I have tasted at other locales. No complaints on the chips and salsa. I really enjoyed the consistency of the salsa, not too dense but not runny - just the perfect amount of kick for a Sunday AM. Our Mexican eggs Benedict arrives and it's quite the site to behold (you can oooh and aaaah at the picture.) A combination of a poached egg, atop ham, diced tomatoes, avocado slices and a corn tortilla on the bottom covered in queso. Served with a cup of black beans, this breakfast was scrumptious!! Since moving to the east side of Austin, I've had to adjust all of my habits and find new places. I originally visited Mi Madre's in the afternoon a few weeks ago with some friends and had a few margaritas and drinks. That was not enough for me to pass judgment. Fast forward to last week, I visited Mi Madre's for some breakfast tacos. They are definitely delicious. They use a lot more potatoes than other places I've been to, but everything tasted pretty fresh. I wouldn't say the eggs are amazing, but the salsa seals the deal. The salsa they provide you with is pretty spicy compared to most breakfast salsa I've received with my morning taco habits. The wait for the tacos is a little lengthy on the weekends. It took about 10 minutes for our order to be ready. They are making it all fresh so I can't really penalize for the wait. Taco Shack has a bit more of a assembly line operation to get the tacos out quickly, but Mi Madre's bested them in terms of quality. read more

There is very limited parking. I had to park on the street. It wasn't too bad, because I went when it was slow. So just a heads up. The restaurant is absolutely beautiful. There is a cute little outdoor area with big trees for shade. If I could rate things individually, service: 5, the ambience: 5, chips and salsa: 5, food: 3.5, price: 3 (a little high, but you get a beautiful patio). The food: the salsa was hot even for me (and I can handle a lot of heat), but good. The chips were my absolute favorite part. In my opinion they have the best chips I've ever had. They were light and crispy, but still sturdy enough for a chunky salsa, AND they were served warm. I had the New Mexico and the pork was delicious. The corn tortillas under my eggs were really soft. You could tell they were homemade. The green chile was okay, but I have been spoiled by Colorado green chile. The eggs were perfectly done with a runny yoke. I didn't like the beans. They were a good consistency and had flavor, but something was off about them. The potatoes were not seasoned at all. Not even with salt. My margarita was not bad, but nothing special for the price. Overall: While the food was good, in Austin you can get better for cheaper. I'd still recommend it, and I'd go back for those chips and the ambience. read more

Mi Madre's is a proud local TexMex joint located in East Austin. It is near UT on Manor rd and is a long standing place for breakfast tacos in Austin. Place opens very early at 6am Mon - Sat, 8am on Sun. Coleto St. @ Manor Rd where it is located, with plenty of free street parking. The place since the remodel is split into two. The front is where you place togo orders. Walk in, place an order at the register, and your meal will be ready to go, so great setup for call in orders. The rear is the sit down part of the restaurant with waiter service. You have the option to sit inside, on the covered outdoor area, or also in the shaded roundtable benches. Served with chips and salsa. Now onto the food. They have a long list of 19 different breakfast & lunch tacos available for choice. They also serve Migas plate, carne guisada, huevos rancheros, enchilada plate, quesadilla and a few other items. The tacos are wrapped in foil when they are served to you. Prices range $3-4 per taco. You can always order your own tacos if not on the list. My order was #0:bacon, egg, potato. cheese; #2:chorizo, egg, potato, cheese; & #17:Pork adobado, onions, avocado. Eggs are decent but nothing amazing. They use basic cheese, and good quality chorizo or bacon. Its is not a heavy grease taco like other places, which is a good thing. Potatoes I thought were a bit lacking. They are cooked fine, but they take large chunks of potato with skin and put it in the taco. It certainly fills up the taco, but descreases on the flavor since there is no seasoning with them. So I would say it is an above average breakfast tacos but not near the best ones in the city. Waiter service is friendly, and tables can be moved around for larger groups. I feel the waiter service is pretty basic here. Nothing to complain about but nothing to rave on either. It does have a nice outdoor seating setup for nice days. Mi Madre's is a friendly casual place on East Manor Rd. Good place to get a quick breakfast taco to go order, or if you want sit down on a relaxing day to have a meal. It doesnt rank as a top Austin taco spot, but still offers great food. However with many places getting extra crowded on sunny weekend days, this is a local east Austin place that you probably wont find the same huge crowds as other Austin spots. read more

If I could rate the ambiance and service separately from the food I would 100% do it. But I can't, therefore the average would probably deem this place 3 stars in my book. Having read all the stellar reviews of this place online let me just begin by saying that I was very hyped up to try it and this is why I encouraged my friend from out of town to have her birthday dinner here. When we first walked in, the atmosphere seemed incredibly lovely and the decor was beautiful so that for sure got me excited. Once we sat down and began ingesting the chips and salsa we were even more excited, given the intense spice and deliciousness of the salsa (my friends and I all grew up in the Rio Grande Valley, so we KNOW what good Mexican food is and therefore are very very picky). Once we looked at the menu we weren't too excited anymore because it seemed like there weren't too many options, and the only not too expensive things on the menu were the tacos, which after looking at in great detail I thought seemed pretty simple and uninteresting. My friend and I ordered the queso, which was $8 (I was expecting something pretty good at least at this price) and we felt like we basically got yellow melted American cheese. The rest of my friends and I all ordered different tacos and none of us were impressed or were even really satisfied with what we got. We all thought the tacos were pretty bland and basic. Overall, we were disappointed with the food. We wish we wouldn't have been though, because this place is so darn cute and the service is awesome. I probably wouldn't come back here again just because the food was disappointing. I loved Mi Madres and would go back in a heartbeat. In fact, I wish I could go back right now. Their breakfast tacos and their regular tacos are amazing. The tortillas are soft, warm, and fresh, and the tacos are large. The prices are right, and the service is friendly. My only complaint is that the wait times are a little ridiculous. For example, an order of two tacos can take over 30 minutes in the to go line. Some other people ordered 3 platters, and they were waiting for nearly an hour. I can't say it's the restaurant's fault, because there were tons of people working in the small kitchen, and nobody was standing around idly. It could be that they're just that busy. In the future, I think I would go to dine in, as it would make me less impatient with the long wait. read more

In one word, "memorable." We went after our normal Saturday morning run, so probably around 9 or so. Wasn't crowded but many of the inside tables were occupied. We opted for the patio though. It was serene. I had the Migas breakfast taco and he had the Adobo Pork, Onion, and Avocado. The Migas were a little dry but pretty good with the salsa (though Juan's is MUCH better). Honestly, the only reason I took off the 5th star is because their Migas need to step it up. Regardless, I had a bite of the Adobo Pork and it was delicious! Juicy and tender--really tasty marinade. They bring you complimentary chips and salsa, which for me was the tastiest part! I'm a self-proclaimed salsa snob and this place does it right. Not as chunky as Juan's but with all the spice. Also, I think they bake their own chips or something. Really, they were delicious. Perfectly salted, crunchy, with little puff bubbles here and there. Yum. They don't have espresso but I had a coffee and Horchata. The Horchata is so good! Maybe better than Juan's and definitely kicks the ass of Taco Xpress. He got a Cafe de Olla that the waiter sold him on and it was so good he ordered a second. He said the Cafe de Olla (coffee roasted with cinnamon, chocolate, and some other spices) alone would get him to come to this place regularly. $3 for a Migas taco. I can't remember how that compares with the others but let that be your frame of reference. Staff was great. There is another entrance it looks like is open for dinner.
