4++ this place has a vibe of an old school diner that serves Mexican food. Didn't know what to expect, but as soon as I walked in, I felt like I was entering a time capsule. This place has that feel that it is family owned and operated and has been around in this neighborhood for a very long time. The service is friendly and I was seated at the part pretty much as soon as I walked in the door. This place came up on my radar because I learned of it following a couple of LA based food writers (at least one of them grew up in this area). They mentioned a specific dish as well and it sounded delicious - the steak a la chicana. Sauteed beef is simmered in a tomato based sauce with onions and peppers. This dish is served with rice and beans and your choice of corn or flour tortillas. I opted for the flour in order to better soak up the sauce. A delicious and comforting dish for sure. I also ordered a horchata to wash it all down. I wanted to order that specific dish mentioned above, but there are quite a few options on the menu that include combo plates with plenty of classics as well as lots of breakfast items. The location feels like it's more of an industrial area of Stockton - I came here after dark while making a small detour from my yearly Thanksgiving trip between the east bay area and southern California. My first time visiting here before my road trip to Los Angeles . I can say that the food was good for a first visit on a Saturday morning, a bit on the slower side from service and tortillas not delivered. But overall it seems that this is a place that many like to visit and get a good meal. I do however appreciate the "welcome in" when we walked in. As far back as 2-1/2 to 3yrs of age I have been eating the best homemade/handmade food plates.. the stalls could use touching --up; however if you've been eating at a restaurant for at least 53yrs, you just see the memories of HUGE families getting together for this person's birthday/graduation/wedding/ect, ect.... It's like walking in the front door and seen your whole family and extended families friends almost every weekend at least twice a month this place is home The only reason why I give four stars is because they're always understaffed lately. Busy and lively inside. Seated quickly took our drink order then waited a while for someone to take our order. The waitress that took our order was not friendly at all. The first waitress that sat us down was very nice and engaging. Let's hope the food makes up for the lack of friendliness we received from the second waitress. The food was a little off today. After church on Easter Sunday, April 5, 2026, my wife and I decided to look around for a good Mexican restaurant, something different, mom & pop style. After my wife perused the internet for that restaurant--- she found one. At least she thought she had found one. *Case in Point: My wife's Chile Relleno was watery, tortillas were thick, dry, cold & No butter. I ordered a beef combination lunch: The burrito had a small amount of thin, tasteless, gravy poured over it, after initially asking for extra gravy. Overall, the food was tasteless. The chips and salsa were not properly prepared, not spicy. The beef in my burrito was acceptable but had the same tortilla as mentioned above. Although this restaurant is not located in the best area of Stockton, we liked its layout. The waitress was friendly but nowhere to be found when we completed our meal. CONCLUSION: The quality &, preparation of the food will discourage us from ever visiting this restaurant again. read more

I've been coming here with my family since the late 70s; the food has always been authentic and delicious. However, I came last Monday (3/2/26) and ordered Cocido/Caldo de Res. It was literally a bowl of hot water straight from the microwave. The vegetables were undercooked; the carrots, zucchini, and potatoes were hard, and the beef was pink and inedible. No flavor and no seasoning period, not even salt. As a native Stocktonian and regular patron and fan of this restaurant, I was shocked. It made me believe there is a new owner and/or a new cook. Finally went to this restaurant with some friends. It is their favorite Mexican Food place not sure it is mine. Everybody has different likes when it comes to food. The food was fresh and tasted good but in my opinion, too much sauce (which I thought was a bit watery - again my opinion) for the dish I ordered, which was Chilaquiles with eggs. The eggs had been scrambled not fried eggs put on top like I have had at other establishments. My friends had Huevos Rancheros with Chili Colorado and his wife had a Wet Chicken Burrito. Their meals looked good, so maybe it was the dish I ordered. I was told that you have to go for breakfast or lunch to get the fresh homemade tortillas. They were tasty. Our server was attentive. Recently discovered the breakfast burritos. They are perfect sized and priced and that tortilla is fluffy and delicious

A few days ago I was near by this restaurant so I decided to stop by as I remembered how much I liked their homemade tortillas. They're thicker than normal and warm and soft. I remembered that they had pretty good food, well they used to have pretty good food here. I ordered a 3 item combo. I was very disappointed unfortunately. The chicken taco had chicken so dry it was like cardboard in there. The enchiladas were decent and that's why I gave 2 stars. My most disappointing part of my meal was the tortillas. I asked for the homemade tortillas and the lady said, "Oh yes I will put those in for you, don't worry..." Well I guess I needed to double check because she didn't give me the homemade tortillas after all. I guess I had fool written across my forehead. It's times like this I feel it's pretty stupid to tip on to go meals. I gave a generous tip to someone who lied to me and threw my taco on top of the food like it didn't matter what my plate looked like or if I had a crunchy taco when I got home. I was very disappointed and needless to say I won't be back there. It's no longer a favorite for me. Hopefully you have better luck when you go there. By the way what's up with their bathroom??? I almost couldn't stand to be in there. The smell is horrible. It literally smells like something dead in there. Something has to be wrong with the plumbing or something. My experience here was great, I stopped in Stockton because of Amtrak. My train got delayed from 9:30-11:30, so I decided to walk over for a bite to eat. The service and food was great, I got the super breakfast burrito and it was brought out relatively quick. The ambiance was great as well, and they have fantastic workers. David offered and gave me a ride back to the station so that I wouldn't have to walk back in the heat and avoid walking in unsafe areas. The chips are great, I had to ask for a hotter salsa which they did give me promptly however it really wasn't much hotter than what we already had. Otherwise, we have a great dinning experience and I highly recommend this restaurant now. I have been there so many times and it hit or miss but now they seem to be on a great run. I'm very picky on my eggs and they nailed it on the first time. There are only a 3 places that have done that so I give them 5 stars just for not having to send my food back. And now when we come to Stockton we always take our son and his Grandma to one of our favorite places Mi Ranchito. So good. I always get the same thing: Huevos Rancheros Con Chile Verde with whole beans and rice. Served with their thick hot tortillas it's just perfect for me. My wife and kid love the carne asada burrito and everybody loves the cheesy but messy chips and gravy. The service can sometimes be a bit slow and other times things come out quickly. The food was bland. I asked for extra spicy chilaquiles and they failed horribly! Not even a tingle of spice. My daughter asked for tacos and those lacked in flavor as well. He told me to get the he'll out of his restaurant. My sin: I offered to buy food for a homeless person not on his property. I decided to give this place a second chance. Hoping it was just busy the first time so the food was bad. But that's not the case. Second time around I sat down looked over the menu which doesn't have much options. I ordered but while I was waiting I had to ask for chips and salsa after 15 minutes of waiting. Food came out and it was room temp. The chile was soggy and cold. The meat (beef) was boiled you could taste the residue that comes off on beef when you boil it. There was no seasoning to the meat whatsoever. The rice also has no flavoring no amount of salt could help it. However the beans were great. I'm not a bean person but they were good. The lettuce in the taco is salad mix. It has carrots and red cabbage in the taco. The salsa is very salty no heat to it and large bits of spices to it also very watery. Went here this morning as we have been doing for many years. Waited 40 minutes for our food ( which never arrived due to some lame excuse) . As we patiently waited for our order, two other couples entered a good 10-15 minutes after we did. Our patience wore thin when the first couple was attended to within 5 minutes of entering the establishment and then second couple received their order a few minutes later. The perception that we were purposely made to wait was enough for us to get up and leave. Then the waitress (Angelica) informed us that ours was taking longer because I had a special order which was chorizo and eggs!! This insult to our intelligence was a bit too much to bear, hence this review . The owners have always treated us with respect and it's a shame they have to babysit some of their staff. Their food has been great for the many years I've been going there. The last three visits, including today, have been disappointing because the food sits and arrives warm, not hot. The cook(s) set the food on a warming shelf but they don't deliver it to your table timely. I brought this to the attention of the owner all three times and his response was "you can't tell us how to run our business". My response to that was I'm not, I just want hot food. They either need another server or the owner might want to assist when they're busy. Nobody wants cold eggs! Just had a horrible experience on Christmas Eve. I was meeting a friend for breakfast and placed the order for both of us. I have been coming to the restaurant for years and my friend's family would come for breakfast every Sunday after church. My friend walked in the back room to inform me we have to leave because the owner said he is not welcome.
