The quality of the guacamole at Mi Tierra is consistently good and it has been for the past 7 years every time I come here.

I've traveled through a lot of Central America, but haven't been to El Salvador. When going out with friends last night, we wanted to try something new. When considering Mi Tierra we thought "it's probably pretty much like Mexican - and we already have a favorite Mexican place." But we decided to try it. Turns out there's no way to mistake Salvadoran food for Mexican. Each dish was something entirely new to us. We loved every bite. We had pupusas (filled tortillas) which were really good. The garnachas (carnitas on a small tortilla) were eye-rollingly good. They were so satisfying to bite into with the tortilla being a bit crunchy and chewy at the same time. This was my favorite bite of the evening. The chile rellenos were great. The steak delicious. The ceviche was so refreshing and really, really good. The plates were plentiful, too. No skimping on anything. Great homemade hot sauce, too. So much of what we tried was new to us. Other Latin American countries may have dishes with the same names, but the Salvadoran take on them was really a pretty exciting discovery. The family that owns the restaurant wait on you - and they are lovely, welcoming people. When we walked in, every table except one was occupied by Latinos - this, to us, was a great indicator about the authenticity of what we were about to have to eat. The restaurant has been there since 1997. Why it took us so long to discover it is beyond me. It flew to the top of our favorites list - and they are going to get to know us because they'll be seeing us often enough! read more

Can't say enough about this place! Over the years they have updated their restaurant interior little by little, but the food has remained deliciously the same! The portions are very generous, and the prices are good. Try the tamalitos with their homemade cheese. Great as an appetizer or as a meal! If you get it as a meal, make sure to get a side of black beans and plantains. I've never had better Guatemalan food, and the owners are incredibly friendly. Definitely eat here! read more

So I just walked in to Mi Tierra. And the place is busy. There are 2 people working the front and diner area. I wait in line until it's my turn to order take out. The lady at the front immediately grabs all the money in the tip cup as if it hadn't sat there all day. In wich I took offensive. But I didn't say anything. I ordered a burrito. $6.95 and the lady tells me it's a $10.00 minimum. Mind you there is no sign. Now I politely tell her that I have an issue. She said we are busy. If you don't like it you can go. Get out! If I didn't have any sense I would of went off in there. Instead I took my money and walked out. First time I have ever been discriminated against at a Mexican restaurant. I am not usually this critical of a restaurant, but let me say this place is by far the worst meal I have had since college. Meals: Steak with jalapeño stuffed something Chicken with vegetables (Girlfriend's food) First thought: Steak - way over cooked, sauce and some type of liquid all over everything and bland Chicken - way over cooked, different veggies all overcooked as well as being bland Conclusion: Steak - This was just awful, everything on the plate was so lack luster it was unbelievable. I don't know how this place has good reviews. When I read the reviews and saw all the photos I thought this place was going to be a gem but those reviews are either all friends or I picked a horrible day to go. Chicken - Wasn't as bad as the steak the rice seemed like it was a few days old. All the food tasted the same bland and overcooked. I wouldn't go back unless they are closing the doors on the place and opening something worth going to. Side notes: Hot sauce was really good Take down the sign that says you won an award in 2002 it has been over 10 years no one is buying that. People seem nice, food is just OK, and it's way over-priced. I've been here a two or three times because I want to like the place (they serve food that should be healthy), but something's always a bit off (steak seems low quality, fish soup has hardly any edible fish in it, etc.). read more

Absolutely delicious. Apparently this place has been in effect since 1997. I lived in Waltham from 99 to 2000, and yet somehow I never even heard of this place. My loss. You need to try: The fried pork. They have it as an appetizer and as a main dish. I wish I had gotten the main dish, so I could have had more of it. Slow cooked then fried chunks of pork, with lime and a light salsa and hot sauce. If you like eating pig, you need this. Hell, I need more of it. I cannot stress how much I loved their fried pork. They do a mean fried chicken too, light and crispy and not too oily. Awesome. And their pupusas were delicious too, with a stewed pork that was nicely flavorful. And their basic things are amazing too. The fried plantains are perfectly cooked, fork tender and sweet and not too oily. Same for the tortillas, thick and delicious and well-cooked. And the refried black beans? As a hater of black beans, these were tasty and with just a little bit of texture to them that you don't get most places. The service is quick and friendly, and while the ambiance is pretty much just a generic Moody St restaurant: who cares? The food is brilliant. You need to eat here. read more

I love love love Mi Tierra and here is why: Amazing taco appetizers. The asada tacos are huge and super filling. The meat is tender and corn tortillas are homemade. As it should be in any authentic restaurant! Guacamole- so delicious and creamy! You can taste the lime and cilantro without overpowering the avocado flavor. Refried black beans - need I say more??? They are to die for! I get a side every time I come here. Carne Asada- I'd give this dish 3.5-4 stars. It wasn't as flavorful as my favorite Carne Asada over at Paisano but it was still good. This is a must try place. I usually do take out and they are super fast but have sat down to eat once. Service was quick and friendly. Love it here! read more

DELICIOUS FOOD!!! And great price as well. Each plate is about $12-14 and it is more than enough food for 2 meals. I ordered the combo plate with pork, ribs, and chorizo, which came with rice & beans mix and potato salad. We also ordered 2 of the 2 pupusa plates (one mixed and one cheese; cheese was better so I recommend that) which each came with plantains, the tomato sauce, and slaw. We also got some of their homemade hot sauce. Everything was amazing and delicious and it is definitely on my list to visit again. read more

My husband and I have visited this eatery many times. It was our "go-to"place for good food at a reasonable price. We decided to go back last week. To say we were disappointed in the quality of food and level of service is an understatement !!! The appetizers took unusually long to be served. When they arrived at our table, one was overcooked, dry and hard. The other appetizer ( Plantains with Crema) was undercooked. A while later, our meals were served. Both my husband were unimpressed with same meals that had brought us back many times. More than our disappointment with the quality of the food however, was the level of service or lack thereof. Though the owner and her son chatted with other customers, they continued to walk pass our table. AT NO TIME did the owner, nor her son come to our table and ask how our meals were? Nor did they ask if we wanted something else to drink since our glasses were empty. The only time the owner came to our table was to bring the check and ask if we wanted a box to take the food that had not been eaten. I was tempted to ask the owner: "Which days do you offer friendly, customer service coupled with great food so that I would know when to return"? We remain disappointed as we truly enjoyed this place. We would be willing to forgive the fact the the food was a "Miss" on this particular visit. However, what we cannot forgive is that we were made to feel like "Unwelcomed Guests" read more

I moved from Waltham to Chicago nearly 5 years ago, but I still keep a Mi Tierra card in my wallet at all times...just in case I miraculously and unexpectedly find myself in the Boston area and need to place a takeout order. Because basically, Mi Tierra is the best restaurant in the world. Yes, THE WORLD. If I could only eat one thing for the rest of my life, it would be Mi Tierra's volteados with rice, avacado, homemade queso and pupuas. Just thinking about it makes me weep with longing. A wonderful, extremely overlooked restaurant. Their pupusas are handmade and fantastic - much better than any other pupusas I've tried. Their black beans are also absolutely terrific, mashed into a patty type shape and then grilled or baked or something. If you're a vegetarian (or not a vegetarian), you'll love this simple meal: avocado, black beans, rice, sour cream (which is actually a little round peice of fresh white cheese - very tangy and delicious), and a mixed (pork and cheese) pupusa. So filling and delicious. This place is highly recommended. You will feel like you ate somewhere really special. read more

Delicious authentic affordable food!!! I had the tostados alongside the sweet plantain with cream. My party could not even talk the food was so divine. I'm obsessed with this place. Do not be tricked by its unassuming appearance. If I'm meeting someone for lunch in Waltham, this is always where I suggest. It's way better than the Guatemalan food down the street, just a little harder to find. Everything is super cheap, which I love. I almost always order the pupusas with both meat and cheese (my mouth is watering just thinking about them). They come with plantains, rice, and beans. If you've never had pupusas, they are corn tortillas stuffed with meat, cheese, or both, and they are amazing. The beans that come with them are the best refried beans I've ever had. Seriously life changing. There is never a wait, and the service is always good. I've never been for dinner, but I would imagine it's equally good. read more

The carne asada and shrimp ceviche are to die for. They can make the ceviche spicy by adding jalapeños if you want.

First visit was with my family last week. The guac was great. All of the food was enjoyable and at a reasonable price. Decor is typical of a family restaurant, nothing fancy, but it was clean. We will definately visit again. read more

I've never tasted Guatemalan nor El Salvadorean food before (that I can remember), but I was really surprised when my friend took me to this place. They don't have much of a vegetarian menu and I remember taking a LONG time reading the menu trying to figure out what I could eat. I ordered what looked like a small dish with cassava - of which I've never heard. Everything was surprisingly spicy and delicious! My meal looked tiny, but when I finished everything, I was stuffed. Great place, but I wished they'd expand on their vegetarian options. read more

You would never think to stop in here since it just doesn't stand out. The chicken is amazing and the kids menus are basically the same as the adult except half the price. If you are looking for great ambience you will not find it here. But if you are looking for great Guatamelan food, definitely check it out. read more

My husband and I come here just about every Saturday for breakfast. I have the scrambled eggs with cheese, platanos, sour cream, beans and tortillas. It is super filling and delish! My family is Central American so, for me the BEST Central American food will always be had at home - in the meantime Mi Tierra will do. read more

This place was fantastic. I went with my friend recently. Both of us have spent some time in Central America and had a ball! The food tasted so authentic it was crazy. If you don´t like it, its probably because you are expecting americanized "Mexican" food. I recommend the experience for sure as long as you are open to something unique. Looking for a new spanish place I checked out Mi Terra tonight. It very good. The plantains were to die for and the tamalitos were amazing. I got cheese pupapas and my husband got the meat version. The portions were enormous, I hardly made a dent and I left stuffed. The sauce they give you on the tables makes everything especially amazing. The decor was pretty strange and I think the pupasas needed guac. I left full and happy for less than $15 a person. read more

Homey little family-run restaurant at the top of Moody st. We started off with yummy homemade guacomole for an app, then a variety of dishes so we could taste what Mi Tierra had to offer.The pork pupusa plate had the absolute best refried black beans I have ever had - so light they almost floated off the plate. We also had the homemade chorico sausage, split and grilled on top of thick tortilla, and a stuffed jalapenos. Portions are generous and very filling - we didn't eat again until late the next day! 17 years in business with good reason! We are new to the area and needed a place to eat last night. I read a couple reviews here on yelp for Mi Tierra (on Moody Street-shocked to discover it's free parking!) and decided to try it out. The plantain appetizer is a MUST and huge, and delicious! My husband had an empanada and something else (I forget) and loved them both. I had the shrimp ceviche for dinner. It was fabulous. The only downfall was it said it was served with tortilla chips, but they brought me many packs of saltines! The two do not go together, but luckily, I like to eat ceviche on its own. Hubby had the chorizo (very spicy but good) and steak (very tender). It was truly delicious and plan to make it a regular spot. Note they close the last two weeks of July and December for vacation. Used to go here a lot when I lived in the area ten years ago. Hadn't been back since. I was nervous and felt like i was meeting up with an ex girlfriend. The place did not disappoint. Atmosphere is no frills. But the food is oh so good. Got the taco and enchilada combo with pupusa. Packed with flavor. They take a lot of pride in their food. I'm a vegetarian and this is one of my favorite mexican style restaurants. I've never ordered a complete meal here, but every time i order a sampling of the appetizers and have a wonderful palette of flavors in my mouth. In particular the tamilitos are amazing: they seem to be made from freshly ground corn and have a great, subtly sweet flavor; they are served with some sweet cream and freshly made white cheese! I also love their version of enchiladas which is a tostada covered in beans, cabbage, cilantro, and other tasty things. Even the tostada just covered in guacamale is a treat (even though i can't explain why it tastes so good there). The pupusas are great, as are the plantains. This is a great restaurant, and you can eat relatively cheap there (unless you are like me and you order too much food because it all tastes so great). read more

I have been eating here for 30 years (believe it or not, they have been here that long). While I am not an expert on various Spanish cuisine, everything I have tried at this place as been a huge success for me & others I have brought here. My husband especially enjoyed the pan fried Tiliapia. I tasted his fish; it was exceptionally good. We jointly enjoyed Tostada de guacamole, salsa o frijol; fried crispy tortilla w/guacamole and grated cheese appetizers for only $2. I ordered a roasted chicken dish--Pollo Asado (roasted 1/2 chicken w/rice, beans & salad), only $12.95. It was also delicious. At the end of the meal, we were very happy with the bill--less than $35 for 2 complete meals (with doggy bags 2 go) & 2 beers--we had no room for dessert. Maria & Nelson are lovely people, who both have great people skills--they have been in restaurant business more than 30 years as they were in this business when they lived in New York B4 they came 2 Waltham 2 settle. In order to minimize issues with some of the male customers drinking 2 excess, they decided to vacate their liquor license. I think this adds to the full-family-friendly atmosphere as those issues have been eliminated. This is a casual, cozy restaurant with great food & very nice wait staff--an excellent deal.
