The food didn't live up to the hype. It felt like they took Mexican staples and attempted to dress them up. In the process, they focused too much on style and lost a lot of the substance and flavor that makes the food delicious. The service was nice but a little on the slow side. This restaurant has a lot of hype, and for good reason. The food is really really good! We appreciated how unique and flavorful he food was. The steak burrito was excellent as was a chicken thigh dish (pictured here). We also loved the salsa that went with the chips and salsa. The food came out shortly after we ordered. One negative aspect of the experience was waiting for our table. We had a reservation yet waited 25 minutes to be seated without being offered anything from staff while we waited. There were no apologies or acknowledgement of the wait. The policies on the reservation were really strict and we were told we would be charged $25 a person if late or no showing, so it was frustrating that we made every effort to be on time only to be seated late. In addition, we were seated by the door on a bitter cold day, so every time the door opened we got a blast of freezing air. Lastly, the server unfortunately appeared to be losing her voice yet would stand across the table quietly asking questions that none of us could hear. When we asked questions about the food, she struggled. For example, "What does mahi mahi taste like?" was answered with "Uhm I'm not sure but they say its really delicious." At the end of the day, we'd go back because of the food but these aspects of the experience and service were disappointing. read more

It just didn't live up to the hype that I've been hearing about it + all the awards they've gotten? The steak burrito was very full of steak (which it should be for $25) but it just wasn't that tasty. Same with the Al pastor tacos. I think I just prefer the more affordable/authentic Mexican places in Pilsen. I have nothing against a restaurant trying to take a customer and dressing it up, but this feels like it got dressed up in a way that just made the food not as tasty. Some of the food is pretty impressive but some of dishes are just ok. I definitely appreciate the creativity in plating and ingredient combinations throughout all the dishes though! We started off with two tacos, the Chucho's Pollo and Campechano. The pollo taco was good, but didn't feel particularly special. The Campechano, however, was really great and I'd definitely recommend getting this taco! It has a combination of chorizo and carne asada and all of the meat was very flavorful. We got 3 dishes as our mains, the elote with squash and lobster, mushroom flautas, and the short rib with bone marrow. The elote was just ok but I particularly loved the roasted squash in it and could have eaten that on its own. The mushroom flautas were also a good dish but didn't feel particularly special. The short rib and bone marrow was my favorite!! The short rib is so good and pairing it with the bone marrow made the dish feel extra decedent. I'd highly recommend trying this dish. For dessert we got the chocolate tres leches and it was very good. Overall a great restaurant to come experience. read more

My friend and I ordered a couple plates to share, the Costra Taco con nopales and the Steak Burrito. Both had great balanced flavors and textures. The steak was deliciously seasoned and burrito is definitely a dish to share. The nopal was perfectly grilled and the greens well seasoned. We then ordered dessert, the Kristoffer's Tres Leches and Flan De Queso, both also delicious with great textures and flavors. There was a wine special that night but we opted for a Coke and tepache. They have a nice outdoor patio and indoor seating includes high top, regular table and bar seating. Service was attentive by both the waitress and bar staff. I liked the horchata--it had a roasted rice flavor that added depth and made it more interesting than a normal horchata. Wow the food was incredible. When we walked in a plate of the Chamorro puerco en mole walked past us and we knew immediately we had to order it. It did not disappoint. Everything we tasted was incredibly rich in flavor and creative in design. I was so impressed with the combination of tradition and creativity in each dish. We had made a reservation in advance as recommended by Yelp because the seating is fairly limited. Poor service from the host which was disappointing since we had waited several weeks for this reservation but our server was excellent and made really helpful suggestions about how much to order and which dishes were must-try. She also made excellent recommendations for wine and agave, that were incredibly delicious and not just the most expensive. The inside is colorful with lots of planes and flowers around. Not too loud or dark so good spot for smalls groups or a date. I will definitely be back to try more of the food, the whole menu looked incredible. read more

Great spot! Mi Tocaya has a small interior and a cute patio place as well. We made reservations ahead of time as seating is limited. When we made reservations, they were only open Wednesday-Sunday. The food is great although some portions are a little smaller. We ordered: - Tlacoyo de nopalitos - pretty good but nothing spectacular - Oyster tacos - my favorite dish of the night! This was my first post-pandesal dinner. It was at full capacity (both indoor and outdoor) but we fully vaxxed outcheaaa so I got over some of the anxiety. How do I make these at home because I need to know. Fish con mole rojo - I don't have mole often cuz places either don't offer it or they don't taste good. This tasted divine. It was served on a bed of crispy rice puff things I can't remember what, but they added nice texture. Oyster Taco - Please get this. And get one for each person cuz you're not gna wna share. Perfectly balanced dish. The oyster was rich but the salad on top was acidic and everything just melts in your mouth. The squid ink tortilla? Sheeesh. Taco Discada - Various meats piled high on a flour tortilla. But don't mistake the tortilla for that Mission cardboard version from the grocery store. This is light and tasty. The slab of pork belly makes the dish rich and there's a nice little kick of heat throughout. Solid choice. I had the Tukmaria, which was great with the mezcal, basil seeds, and pomegranate. We also took the Nitro Horchata to go, which is a move I highly recommend. I saw some negative reviews about service but ours was lovely. The service was prompt and courteous. The decor inside is very cute even the bathrooms for a small place the bathroom is large and very detailed in its colorful decor. The patio could probably have a little more vegetation to hide you from the California side of the street. Drinks, fair. The horchata was a cup of large ice cubes. I think they lost a star on that. I mean it's not even alcohol and I got about one shot of horchata. Couldn't even tell you if it was good because it was hard to drink through the 5 industrial sized ice cubes. The food was fine. Decor-First it's in Logan Heights neighborhood, which is pretty cool. Interior of restaurant is covered with bright colors reminding of Mexico City. Tables and booths are really cool and all over the interior your transported to Mexico. Out door seating area is cool and lit with outdoor lights. Service-very good. Waiter was great, he knew menu and made great suggestions. I will say I saw him eat a couple of chips off chip basket he took to table next to me, a bit odd. It wasn't my basket of chips so I didn't say anything. Food-Winner, winner, chicken dinner!!! All food was great and very unique, nothing traditional or boring on menu. Tongue appetizer was awesome. Cow tongue was tender, pickled onions, and greens made for a party in your mouth. Tuétano (Bone Marrow) was FANTASTIC!! It was very good, meat and bone marrow had great flavor. The food is honestly nothing to rave over, and I doubt we would crave any of the food... but it was a good experience. There was a lot of unique sounding items with fancy terminology. My family has been wanting to try this place for awhile, and we pounced at the opportunity as soon as they reopened for dine-in. Our first reservation was cancelled, but their staff was extremely helpful in notifying and rebooking us ASAP. Food: AMAZING. We had the guacamole, shrimp ceviche, enchiladas, queso fundido, and the steak burrito. All were delicious, but the queso with the goat was our favorite. All the dishes had great flavors but weren't too overpowering. Drinks: We all had the margarita. It was a solid traditional margarita--yum! Learn from my experience. This place is not worth your time or your dime. Service:   Rushed and arrogant Taste:      Poor & singular Quality.    Deficient. Lacking freshness Value.       Way, way, overvalued SERVICE:  We arrived 15 minutes before opening time, & a line was already forming. (8 people). We were told that if we wanted to dine inside, we would have to sit at the bar, or the small communal table (seats 6). There are about 13 tables for two on the inside, not a single one was occupied, all reserved; or so we were told. Over an hour later when we left, 11 of the 13 tables were still empty. A bottle of water was served, it was warm, on a 90° summer day. I'm not talking tap temperature. I think the bottle was sitting on a kitchen counter for quite some time. The waiter spoke in a low, monotone voice at high speed, explaining the restaurant's concept. When I tried to ask about a particular dish, he seemed annoyed and went on to say: if this is your first time here, let me tell you, people order a few plates from the antojos (cravings) to share with. And antojitos (little cravings) for single servings. So, the "antojos" are big enough to share, I asked. No, that's not what I said. He answered. That's what people do. I asked for hot sauce, and was told they don't have any, but I could place an order for their home made sauce ($4.00) if I wished. TASTE & QUALITY  We tried 4 different dishes. All were tasteless; when I order a "Oyster Taco" I expect to taste oysters, not just some burnt tomato sauce masquerading as some kind of salsa. And for $6.00 and the size of a small taco, I expect something special. This was neither. And the tortilla was cold and stale. The shrimp tostada was no different; all I could taste was the peppers; and the tostada wasn't fresh. It takes less than 20 seconds to fry a tortilla for a tostada. But they couldn't make a fresh one for $15.00 Things went from bad to worse with the "Lobster Esquites". The dish was overwhelming with lime juice and wedges. No lobster taste whatever. But the worst was the (duck) "Carnitas y Habichuelas de la Olla". The duck was incinerated and dry to the point that it did not tasted like duck or any other meat. It was so bad that I did not care that it was only about a tablespoon of "meat" in a dish full of beans. All for the great price of $20.00 VALUE Portions are small, so I estimate the average person needs to spend no less than $40 without drinks. At this price, there are hundreds, if not thousands of better options; including many within the same neighborhood. Maybe someone can explain to me how a restaurant within a mile from this place can serve fish tacos for $3.00 and serve 2 types of house made hot sauce, and pickled carrots and onions at no charge? But Mi Tocaya needs to charge for their hot sauce? One of the reasons I visited this restaurant is because I read that was named one of "Bon Appetit's best restaurants of 2017. I have lost all respect for this organization! I think they are playing a joke on us. Testing how influential they are with their recommendations. I have seen my share of (good &) bad restaurants, but this is the first time I have seen one that fails at everything! read more

I wanted to update my review as something occurred that is very disturbing. I posted this exact same review on Instagram and then chef Diana Davila commented that my review was ignorant and racist. I blocked her and she then posted basically the same insults under the mitocaya Instagram account on my posting. I am adding a screenshot of her remarks to me directly on my Instagram account. I would AVOID this restaurant and this chef at all costs. We went here after reading a review and decided to check it out. Got here at 20 minutes to 5 and they open at 5. We were surprised to see there was a line of people waiting to get in. I thought wow, this place must be really good! Boy was I wrong. We were asked if we had reservations, when we said no, the hostess said the only tables she had available were outside, at the bar, or at the communal table. We opted for the communal table which seats 6. I knew we were in trouble when the waiter brought us water and it was lukewarm. The waiter explained the concept of the restaurant to us and said that the idea is that it is small and medium tapas to share. This was really code words for very small portions and way overpriced. We had an Fried oyster taco (con salsa Veracruzana) and a Baja tostada (shrimp erizo de mar, chilica) to start. I did not find any oysters in my taco at all, and the sauce tasted like tomatoe paste out of the can. The Tostada was good, but nothing great. Our main dishes were Habichuelas De La Olla con Carnitas (duck carnitas, white beans, green tomato pico de gallo) and Lobster Esquites (corn, crema enchilada, epazote). The duck was overcooked and the elote (very small corn cobs)in the Lobster dish was burned. Our bill was $65.20 before the tip, outrageous! Even worse, I went to the bathroom, there was just enough toilet paper for me and no replacement roll in sight. They just opened, what the heck? When we left, an hour later, the outside patio was packed, but the inside was 3/4 empty. Where were all the reservations? Definately not going back there. read more

Years ago, Chicago had a Mexican restaurant called Amelia's. It was creative, fresh, delicious - just my favorite restaurant all around. Unfortunately, they also had a terrible location, and even their stellar reputation wasn't enough to keep them going. They closed down, and I have spent years looking for something close. I even tried Mexico, to no avail (okay fine, only in Valladolid and Merida, which is in the Yucatan, a super boring food region. But still.) The closest I could find in Chicago was 5 Rabanitos in Pilsen (a damn good restaurant which I also recommend) and the amazing tortillas at Rudi's at Maxwell Market. But nothing came even close to Amelia's. Then I discovered Mi Tocaya, and my years long search has ended. It is not as good as Amelia's. It is *better* than Amelia's. Every single dish I've had here is amazing. I spent my birthday here. I came here for my graduation. When my friend got a new job, I brought her here. And when she quit that job months later, I brought her here to comfort her. Later on, a man I cared about dumped me here. I like Mi Tocaya so much even that didn't dampen my desire to come here. In fact, I kept eating. The man is gone, but I wasn't going to let these earthy rustic tortillas go to waste. My favorite dish so far is their roasted cabbage salad in allium dressing. Their fish preparation is always perfection, and so is their wine list. I came back from a trip to Barcelona raving about the wine, and was shocked to discover one of the same wines being served here. For the basic person at your table, they have a steak burrito - but even that steak burrito is just a top notch steak burrito done to perfection. This is just a restaurant done so well by people who know food, and it's done well to every tiny detail, from the concept to the execution to the beautiful plating. Very disappointed - on my anniversary on top of that. Was very excited to try chef Diana's food and was let down. Guac- probably the best part of our meal, chips were very salty and didn't have any lime on them. Tetela- very under seasoned and pretty much bland. The salsa macha was the only thing that had any flavor but even that was bland. Huarache - the huarache itself was ok but a little bit thick. The mushrooms were under seasoned and had a whole bag of dill on top. Albondigas- would have been better with a pool of bisque instead of a soigne swoosh on the plate. The albondigas themselves were very Asian forward like a wonton and also mediocre. Wanted to have a good experience but unfortunately didn't. After wanting to eat here on countless Mondays, we finally got pick up on a Saturday night, and it did not disappoint. I don't know why Yelp says they don't do takeout because they 100% do. There are only like 4 kind of cramped patio tables if you choose to eat there - but it looks like there are a couple of things, like a mole, that you can't get on the to go menu. I can't explain why this food was just so good because I'm not that versed in Mexican food. But we loved it here because everything was perfectly cooked, perfectly seasoned, and have very clean, balanced, and distinct flavors. Creamy black beans, perfectly smoky/meaty backdrop in the cowboy beans - I don't typically choose to eat beans, but I couldn't get enough of theirs! A very flavorful gently roasty salsa that was bursting with umami, but not an artifically msg-bomb. A fresh and spicy, fruity habanero salsa. Thick, chewy tortillas with very strong corn flavor. Everything was perfectly dialed in, and the flavors shine with laser focus. None of the flavors were muddled, no components were poorly prepared. There is a clarity and precision to this very homey and casual food. This is not cheap food by any means, but people pay more for less and inferior quality sushi or like random American "upscale-casual" nothingness in River North all the time. The food here is a splurge, and even though it's not "fancy," it's a nice treat for a weekend meal in. We'll definitely be back for more take out. read more

Boyfriend and I had the guacamole and the PB lingua for apps, both were incredible, but the lingua is a must. He got the Queso Fundido con Birria I got the Steak Burrito. If you love Queso Flameado, get the Queso Fundido. It was recommended by our server and it was a mixture of good flavors with all the cheese your little heart could desire. Nora and I enjoyed what was our most amazing Chicago foodie experience at a small Mexican restaurant called Mi Tocaya Antojeria in Logan Square. Its owner, Chef Diana Davila, was a James Beard Foundation Award nominee in 2019, and has also received Michelin Bib Gourmand status. For starters, the virgin cocktails, chips, salsa, and guacamole were overflowing with complementary flavors. For entrees, Nora ordered the Broccolini en Nogada, a vegan salad which is made up of Broccolini, cashew nogada, Mick Klug apples, chile guero, hibiscus, and pickled raisins. When Nora's not talking during a meal, it signals happiness with her choice. I opted for the Chamorro de Puerco estilo Cochinita Pibil, a 26 oz bone-in pork shank braised in cochinita pibil sabores classicos, fried potato, salsa habanera, xnipek, and grilled cabbage served with hand-pressed tortillas. I have never had anything like it or close to it flavor-wise. The pork slid right off the bone. We topped off our meal with coffee we wish we had every morning, and desserts that were off the charts. Nora had the Kristoffer's Tress Leches, a cake Davila brings in from her friends in the Pilsen neighborhood. I had a cheesecake that wasn't on the menu, but was out of this world. Of course, we had to meet Davila, so I waved her down and she came over to our table. She explained her restaurant is in its eighth year, so it survived the COVID pandemic. We noted how much we loved the small space. "Really? People are always telling me 'I need to go bigger.'" Please don't. It's perfect as is. Was excited to try this neighborhood spot but unfortunately the experience left much to be desired. I had an early reservation so the restaurant only had a few other patrons there at the same time. After getting seated, no one else checked on us for the remaining time we were there. I found this especially odd since there were only 4 other tables occupied out of the 10-12 tables total - the place is small! Additionally, as others have pointed out, the food is expensive! $26 for a steak burrito... After waiting for 20 minutes, with no staff checking on us and no water even being at the table, we decided to leave and go elsewhere (plenty of other places in Logan Square. My wife was excited to try another Bib Gourmand restaurant. We have tried two others in the city. Both were excellent. The food is flavorful although small in size. The menu is difficult to read with little or no descriptions. Our waitress spoke perfect English but spoke with the speed of jack rabbit. What did she say? We ordered drinks and she asked for us to order the food too. It was obvious they wanted to turn the table right away. As soon as my wife finished eating her appetizer the waitress yanked her plate. I'm being nice... the waitress was very unpleasant. Lastly this place is EXPENSIVE, especially for what you get. read more

I so wanted to give this spot a good review, but the food was just very meh to me. First off, the restaurant is super teeny tiny, very little seating. But the decor is bright and fun. Service was excellent. Do not go here without a reservation. We waited about 15 min last our reso to be seated, which is fine. Like I said, service was great. The host and our server were both friendly and helpful. But the food just felt flat for me. Maybe I should've ordered the burrito, we got everything besides the burrito. The queso fundido had these leaves that tasted very strongly of black licorice. I have no idea what that was, but the flavor profile was just strange. The guac was awesome, so was the duck carnitas. Duck carnitas were def the best dish we got, would recommend that. Everything else was just meh, flavor wise, and texture wise. I would recommend this spot for tequila and mezcal lovers tho! From outside it looks like a neighborhood bar. Might not think much of it until you get in. It's cozy and intimate but not too loud and crammed up together. The service is what you'd like to see. It's quick, polite, thorough and just the right amount. You don't have a server in your face every 10 seconds but you also won't have to waste time looking for one. Perfect service. Food does not come at once and is meant to be shared. Once you have your first bite of anything you'll know why that is. The quality is so good you will want your family or family to try it anyway. This was my third visit and we were 5 people. Ordered about 5 meals and 2 guacamole orders to share and it was just the right amount. We will be back! read more
