I had a capacitor go bad on the A/C unit. The tech arrived after hours so I was okay with paying for emergency response. What I DID NOT expect was a bill of almost $800. The capacitor cost by itself was over $500. I've had capacitors go bad over the years, I've had contractors come out and replace it at a cost of around $75. I've also see on the web about companies like Michael & Sons over charging for capacitor replacement. Needless to say I was very dissapointed, had my daughters not been there with me I would have cancelled the service and rescheduled at a more reasonable cost. i spoke with Michael and Son today, April 14, and scheduled an appointment for air conditioning service and coolant. They were scheduled to come later this week, then I received a call that they would come today. I called about an hour later to reschedule for Monday, April 20th, and my appointment was cancelled altogether. They said it was because my air conditioning system was not purchased through them. i Know that's not true, as they serviced another system and my water heater. Beware of their lies, and make note that their prices are way over the top. read more

Two years ago I bought a Carrier A/C system through Michael & Son and had it installed by them. I paid over $13,000 for the system. Now there is a leak already. The parts warranty is still in effect, but the labor warranty has expired. I will have to pay Michael & Son over $1,600 to find and repair the leak. This really stinks. read more

Hector, the electrician that Micheal & Son sent out came and replaced my electrical box for a light in the ceiling in no time. They have been to my home 5 (!) times to repair a leaky tub drain, and have yet to carry out an actual repair - just a ridiculous comedy of errors, and no end in sight. I made a telephone appointment to have the leaking drain on a free-standing tub repaired, and here is what ensued over the following weeks: 1. Technician arrived, expressed surprise that we had a free-standing tub, and said he needed to return with a second person to move the tub. Provides $400+ estimate. Also said a separate person from the "remediation department" was needed to assess drywall damage. 2. Remediation person came, looked at minor drywall damage from our leak, and said no remediation was necessary (which was pretty obvious) 3. Original tech returned, but second person ran late - so late that the repair could not be performed in the available time window. 4. Both technicians finally arrive, move the tub, and determine that the repair requires the hole around the drain in the floor to be enlarged. This requires cutting some tile, which they can't do, and instead I need the separate "remodeling department". They leave, another appointment is made, and I receive and accept a new $600+ estimate via email. 5. On the appointed day, Michael & Sons sends - an estimator, not a repair crew! Estimator leaves since I already have the estimate, and promises a supervisor will call me to clear this up. No one ever calls. I make another appointment. 6. On the day of the rescheduled repair, the tech calls in sick, and I'm asked to reschedule again. During two separate calls, I twice ask to have a supervisor confirm that whoever is coming out next will be able to cut the tile and actually make the repair. Promises are made, but I never hear back from anyone So here I am, no repair, no explanation, tub in the middle of my bathroom, hole in the floor, and I've stayed home from work for this circus three times and spent over 2 hours on the phone, mostly on hold. Just surreal, and deeply disappointing. read more

I had to use them when our regular company wasn't available. What a ripoff. They charged almost $500 to replace a basic baseboard heater thermostat. When our regular person came out to see some other issues, he told me this should have only been a little over a $100. They also "sell" a "membership". Not needed. And the technician had to go back to the shop to get a thermostat when he probably should have brought one with him as I had explained the problem prior to the appointment. read more

I lost power late on Wednesday afternoon and was planning on going out of town on Thursday. Michael & Son's were able to come out Wednesday night and resolve my problem rather quickly. The technicians were professional and knowledgeable. They explained what the issue was and what they needed to do to correct it. I was happy they were able to troubleshoot it so quickly. I was able to leave early on Thursday morning without any delay delays thanks to their quick response. read more

Mr Rashid wants us to wait to see if some other manager that is on vacation can fight the county on Monday when he gets back from vacation after we failed the inspection. That's 4 days with the sewage pipe open. They failed the inspection with Montgomery County and the supervisor with Michael and Son wanted me to wait several days to see if someone else could fight it when he gets back from vacation. The person that worked at my job was outstanding and his boss never should have put him in that situation. I already have contractors booked and can't wait because Mr Rashid does not want to follow code. When I asked who was over him he said he was the regional and wouldn't give me the information. I have 4 other projects I was going to use Michael and Son for. I am just about to call the County. Code has to be followed. read more

It took less. than 30 minutes to rebuild 2 water spigots that water my lawn. Cost ... $600. To replace the old spigots with new ones that cost less than $20 each also takes less that 30 minutes. Poorly trained technicians, although pleasant enough. The monthly program is not worth it. It's November and they haven't called or sent a reminder that my winter checkup (which is the primary reason for the monthly charges) is overdue nor did I receive one telling me it was due. So there is no value paying for a monthly fee when you are promised reminders and don't receive them. I haven't called due to a catastrophic tragedy within my family. In the past when I have requested my free inspection and cleanings they will tell me I should have called 3 months earlier, completely out of season and I have a complicated damper system that I need to have changed in the summer and winter, not fall and spring. Then I'm made to wait long periods before I receive an appointment for service. read more

I had a new $13,000 gas furnace installed to replace my 20 year old furnace. The intall crew connected the piping incorrectly which resulted in the new system pumping water onto my roof (3 stories higher) and out onto the street. When I discovered the problem I called emergency services -- the tech who arrived could do nothing other than turnoff the water and the unit. It has taken another day for someone to come back to try and solve the problem. In the meantime I have no heat. In addition the crew left a valve from one radiator open which led to a half inch of water over the bathroom floor. Unbelievablly poor customer service, no sense of urgency and no apology. After discussions the install crew came back by 930 AM. Diaganosed the problem and are making the necessary changes. The crew was very sorry for what happened -- great recovery. read more

After paying twice for the same service (install new smart thermostat) I'm left with a broken new thermostat, a big hole in my wall, no A/C, heat when on recirculate, broken wires, uncapped wires, and unresponsive customer service. Was it the worst experience...?  Was it the best experience...?  Neither.  Yes, I have hot water.  Yes, the piping looks great.  But, they had to come back a 2nd time to fill in the hole where the unit is vented. Yes, I was taken advantage of.  I paid way too much.  The final bill matched the estimate but in retrospect it was too much.  Customer service simply stopped once I started challenging the work that was done.  I have a large pipe sticking out of my condo that is unsightly.  After I asked to have it corrected I was ignored.  I would not recommend this company. read more

My electrician was Corey Calloway and he must be recognized for his professionalism, patience, and expertise. First, he arrived on time and showed respect for my house (door mat, shoe covers). He took the time to figure out the root cause rather than the easy fix. He then shared thoughts about long term solutions before leaving but at no time did I feel pressured to purchase "add on" services. Lastly, I learned a lot by working with him through troubleshooting the problem from beginning to end. Oh, the price was right too. Not the cheapest but certainly not the most expensive compared to other quotes I received. You pay for quality and this was quality job. Kudos to Corey! By the way, about the four stars vs five. I felt that some troubleshooting steps were repeated multiple times but also get that it is part of the process. Appointment took way longer than expected but I'm not terribly disappointed given the outcome. So...more efficiency would've earned the final star. read more

I was disappointed in the reaction of Michael and Son (Alexandria, VA) to the problems I had with the remodeling work done on my house. After completion of the day-long project I noticed a sharp and dangerous edge in the ceiling by a staircase. I also noticed that the two remodelers had cut and painted wood on my terrace, smearing white paint on several of the limestone flagstones. Michael and Son first told me that someone would come to take a look. Nobody showed up or called. The next day I was told that someone from remodeling would call. Nobody called. Michael and Son's response to unhappy customers seems to be just ignoring you. read more

Michael and Son came out to my workplace to take a look at two sinks that were not working. We have been in this building for only 2 years, so it was a surprise that the sinks weren't working. Their two technicians told me that my pipes were corroded, and that my sinks weren't working, so I needed to purchase two new sinks. I could either pay them $5,000 to buy the two sinks and install them, or $2,600 if I bought the sinks myself and then just paid for installation. I called M&S a couple days later to see what kind of sinks they recommended. They told me they would send a message to their department head and I would hear back either that day or the next. I did not hear from them, so I called them two days later. They told me their technician was out in the field, so I should expect to hear from them either tomorrow or the day after. I did not hear from them again so I gave them the usual call. Same excuse, I'll hear back either later today or tomorrow morning. I called M&S at least 5 times over the course of two weeks before I reached someone else, who said, "Oh, we can't recommend sinks, we just install them." Had I been told this the first time, I could've spent time actually researching them instead of being given the complete runaround. Annoyed, I went to Lowe's and asked them what they recommended. Their technician found some great sinks and told me that to purchase and have Lowe's install the two sinks, the total would come out to $700. Not $5,000 - $700. This is way more affordable. I asked the Lowe's technician for a second opinion on my sinks since this is a big project, so he came over the next day and asked how often I changed the filter. He also said our pipes were not corroded - the color that Michael and Son's technicians saw was plumber's glue, which is a standard thing on a lot of sinks. Because I was inexperienced with this, I told him I did not know how to change the filter. The next day, I cleaned some debris off the filter and the sinks started working perfectly. Essentially, Michael and Son came out to my workplace and charged me $69 dollars to tell me that I needed to install new sinks because my pipes were catastrophically corroded. They were not corroded, and I did not need to install new sinks. Michael and Son offered a refund which I have not heard any updates about. I will gladly recommend any service - ANY service - other than Michael and Son, and will never be recommending this company again. This business practice of upcharging and being either catastrophically incorrect or intentionally deceitful is disgusting, shameful behavior and I cannot recommend their services to anyone. read more

I had a new HVAC installed by Michael & Sons in 7/2024, 6 months later in 1/2025 it was discovered that there was a faulty compressor in the brand-new machine. This took multiple trips for them to figure out and fix the issue, to include the following dates: 1/22, 2/3, 2/24, 2/25, and 3/20. While this all took place over a 2-month period, my machine was running in "Aux" and costing me double the electricity. I asked to speak to a manger regarding this and never heard back. Now, one year later, they call me saying the system is alerting again. On 2/9 I asked to speak to a manager about this prior to the service, as I did not feel I should have to pay a diagnostic fee within one year of a full repair on a new machine. I was assured I would have my request sent to a manager on 2/9. They came out 2/10 and charged me the fee, I sent another email and still have heard nothing back. I would not recommend Michael and Sons as they have extremely poor customer service, and you are told multiple different things depending on what technician comes to evaluate the system. If you look on the Better Business Bureau, you will see I am not the only one with these same complaints. Update: Even the email address they gave in the reply is not a functioning email. So I have a seasonal contract but is now cancelled. These guys are really slack. The first tech came on or about April 8th. I dont remember his name. He didnt do anything at the AHU besides take a few readings. Said he pulled blower and cleaned and vac'ed but didnt. Didnt flush the condensate lines didnt clean coils just a total cluster. I took pics and sent to cust serv but nothing. Then he tried to leave without even cleaning the condensate coils on the units outside they were filthy. I had to insist he clean the coils so I drug out the hose for him. Cleaned coils one one unit but he left both units full of debris. He left my hose out and water turned on. I mean this dude was horrible. I called in and the nice lady scheduled a rework which was done last week. This tech Jacob spent most of his time talking over me and telling me what he would not do. Anyway he did take a vac to the attic but like the first tech he was slack. He didnt pull blower and clean. he stuck a small paint brush in the squirrel cage and took a pic with a borescope. It was never pulled, cleaned properly and vac'ed. So for those that done know the afftect of this slack practice-without vac the dust and dirt he brushes off will go directly into the cooling coils in your AHU the second your blower turns on and cause them to be dirtier. Reducing the effisency of your unit. He also didnt disinfect or clean the coils in any way and they are accessable. He took a pic of those with his borescope as well. The inspection says they clean the inside and outside of the AHU which he says they do not do. Outside they did get most of the loose debris out of the units but still left some pine straw and muck in one unit. Theres more but my point is that even with 2 teams sent and me wasting a day for their mistake the job still wasnt done as they promise. I wont ever use them again. Im sure some CSR will reply to this with a sorry excuse and say all I have to do is call or reach out and they will take care of it. If they were concerned they'd be calling me. They are not good at all for real dont use them. read more

I've been a customer of Michael and Son Services for several years now across two homes. First and foremost, I've always appreciated their communication with customers. They text/email me a reminder before an appointment. Call and text when the tech is on their way which includes a GPS map so I can see how far away they are. Most of all they've never missed an appointment window. The techs are always polite and mindful of my floors. They get in/out quickly and all paperwork is done digitally and then emailed to me which allows me to easily find records. They are not the cheapest, but in my experience you get what you pay for! read more

Exceptional Service from Michael & Son! We had been experiencing issues with our home furnace for a while. Initially, we contacted a local company in Falls Church, VA, for a routine service. They inspected the system and assured us that everything was fine. However, we soon realized that our furnace was still not heating properly. Seeking a second opinion, we hired another company, whose technician informed us that the entire system had been improperly installed from the start and recommended a full replacement. Today, we decided to give Michael & Son a chance, and we couldn't be happier with our decision! From the moment we placed the service request to the technicians' visit, the customer support, professionalism, and attention to detail were outstanding. They performed a deep cleaning of our furnace and AC unit and installed a new filtering system that improves airflow efficiency and provides germ protection. Stay away from this company. I called them to fix my air conditioner they came two days later took the air conditioner apart and told me I needed a new fan. They said it would take them between a week and a month to get the part. I could not wait that long in the heat of the summer so I ordered the part myself received it in one day.
