I was referred to Winds of Valley by a company in Southern Virginia that does not work in NoVa. When I contacted Sam about my Bosch condenser that stopped working, he came out free of charge to diagnose the problem. Sam immediately noticed that the condenser unit was not matched with the proper blower and evaporator. The company that installed the Bosch system made calculation errors and told me that the two different devices would work well together; they didn't and quit working after about 2 years. Sam gave me his suggestions, showed me his prices and let me make my own decision. I made my choice and was still skeptical. Sam literally wrote into the contract that I had a year to decide if I was happy with the equipment he installed and that if I wasn't, he would replace what he installed. I never took him up on that offer. The system he installed is quiet and dehumidifies the house, which is something my other system did not do, even though I was told it would. Sam, John and Joesph removed the old components, installed the new ones and cleaned up everything. They swept up after themselves, removed the old stuff, the new boxes and made sure I was happy with everything before leaving. They also walked me through the settings on the new thermostat. They also provided a year of maintenance with the system. Two years later, I replaced the water heater and again called Winds of Valley. The water heater replacement process was as smooth and efficient as the process for the HVAC system. Sam is a small business owner who knows what it means to provide great service, use quality products and keep customers happy. If all contractors were as good as this company, contractors would have a better reputation. I have complete faith in Winds of Valley and highly recommend the company.

Undersized Equipment: For my 1,830 sq. ft. multi-level loft townhome, Bluestar installed a 2.5-ton National Comfort Products through-the-wall AC unit that is physically less than half the size of my original machine, leaving massive voids around the wall opening. Life-Safety Fall Hazard: The machine sits near the roofline several stories above a ground-level driveway. It rests inside the oversized opening without dedicated structural framing, a properly fitted sleeve, or mechanical mounting brackets to anchor it. Massive Gaps & Exterior Visibility: Gaping openings were left on the sides, so wide that I can clearly see neighboring townhomes and direct outdoor daylight from inside my utility closet. Soft Foil Tape & Expanding Foam: The top of the machine was sealed with only soft silver foil tape and flexible wrap rather than a rigid sheet metal transition or structural collar. Into the open side voids, Karol? messily sprayed orange expanding foam instead of constructing proper framing, trim, or weatherproofing. Severe Noise & Vibration: When activated, the unit generates extreme operating noise and structural vibration felt throughout the living areas. Missing Property: A step stool kept in my utility room went missing immediately after the crew packed their gear and departed; I am continuing to check my home to ensure nothing else is missing. Communication Evasion: Karol? conversed easily in English upon arrival, but suddenly claimed not to understand English when questioned about the open gaps, lack of framing, and spray foam. Dismissive Management (Lyn): I sent Lyn multiple detailed text messages and photos documenting my serious safety concerns, questions about the oversized opening, and the complete lack of structural support. Despite being fully informed of the severity and specifics of the hazard, Lyn trivialized the issue before 8:07 am on Sep 16, only replying that she would send someone back merely to "clean that up," offering no plan for structural framing or proper sleeve installation. Washington, D.C. Property Service Undelivered Documentation (Isaac): I was charged a significantly higher inspection fee specifically contracted to include an official written cause-of-damage report and a formal repair estimate for an insurance claim. Technician Isaac completed the on-site visit, but no written report or cost estimate was ever provided, despite multiple follow-up requests sent directly to both Lyn and Isaac. The young lady who answered our call was courteous, friendly and professional. I was very pleased with their ability to get Patrick out to our house the next day. Their service fee seemed reasonable and I felt comfortable with 90% of Patrick's advice. His service seemed thorough and quick. I know just enough about a/c units to have an idea of what was wrong and Patrick confirmed- the system was low on R22 refrigerant (Freon) and the coil for the compressor had gone out. He replaced the parts, but told me that it wouldn't work for long because it was very low on R22 and there was no more R22 available. He explained the history of R22, which I already knew most of, and told me the only option was to replace the entire system. This is where I became nervous because he quoted a price off the top of his head for a new Carrier system. In my profession we say that "the appearance of impropriety is as bad as the impropriety itself. How could he possibly know the exact amount and instantly recall the number? He hadn't even seen the interior unit or duct system, but said it was all inclusive - $9,500 installed inside and out. His next statement made me more concerned as it is frequently used in high pressure tactics. He said that if we decided before June 1, he'd deduct the $500 service charge from the install cost. I asked several questions to explore the issue, but he quickly shut down the questions with the emphasis on how little time I had to decide. He reminded me several times that the current a/c was not repairable due to the R22 issue and that it wouldn't last without R22. He made it clear that R22 hadn't been available for two years. Due to Patrick's statements feeling false to me, I googled it and to my surprise- Freon is available from many suppliers. I was even able to order it myself as long as I ordered it in 2lb containers or less. I was beyond upset and after a few emails received a call from their GM Tim. He danced around the statements for a while before saying that Patrick had told "half truths" about Freon. It is available, but his company chooses not to stock it- although he later acknowledged he has a 25lb can of it in his service truck. He denied that Patrick was trying to sell me a new unit using false statements and again called them half truths that were the result of poor training. Regardless, my 72 yr old neighbor who recommended them was also upset about the "half truths" she was told that made her buy a new a/c. I'm pleased to say I found a different company that is happy to install my Freon for a $90 service call. They can call it half truths all they want, I believe it is called theft by fraud and although I'm not familiar with Virginia laws- in every other state I've lived in this is called Financial Fraud of an Elder in the case of my neighbor. Please be careful- bigger isn't always better. Ps- Tim referred to company as "ARS" which could explain a lot. American Residential Services is a massive corporation out of Memphis, but DM Select claims to be a "small...family owned business" on their website. Something doesn't add up, but that's not for me to decide- I'll refer my neighbor to state criminal investigators to figure out what lies may have been told and if those lies constitute a criminal violation. Update- I found out just how badly they ripped me off when I jumped online to check the parts the installed. One part was under $12 and the other was available for under $30. The technician took less than 15 mins installing both. I believe these people are straight up criminals and you should avoid them at all cost.

But Air Control has never been like that, I have always felt that they charge me an great price for whatever issue I am having with my units. The owner, Fred, is the friendliest person I have met in NoVA and bends over backwards to meet your HVAC needs. Fred has done so much maintenance on two of my units that they run like new. We're in the process of having to replace my oldest unit, which is about 20 years old, and he has been very helpful and resourceful on how he will replace them, what he will replace them with, as well as everything you need to know when upgrading to a modern system. Fred is very prompt and hard working, which I find to be lacking trait in Northern Virginia, so when I found Air Control, it actually put my mind at ease when it comes to my HVAC units. They even make a point of giving you the same tech, so you are getting a knowledgeable person at your home. When I commented that I'm not getting great air flow to the 2nd floor, he checked all the dampers in the basement, and we found the one that was limiting air flow to the top floor. He labeled every damper so if I wanted to manage it differently down the road, I'd know what to do. When I commented about another problem (non-HVAC) he gave me a great recommendation of who to call.
