Stopped for our morning coffee during cross country road trip. Atmosphere was super inviting and service was friendly. Their espresso machine is an antique and is seriously cool. A welcome addition to the Silver St precinct in Nob Hill. Always on the lookout for good espresso in town and this cafe does not disappoint. Had a couple dozen espressos from here over several weeks and the standard is very good. This is across a number of baristas working the machine. I have not asked but going by taste they appear to use a standard blend/roast for the espresso. I'd like to see some alternate options occasionally to try something new. They do a full range of coffee drinks including cold brew coffee. They also have a very extensive range of roasted coffee available to buy in whatever quantity you want. There's also a selection of fresh made food courtesy of Hartford Square though I have not tried it here. The cafe has a range of seating available in two rooms. It can be a busy place at times so plan ahead if you want to grab a seat to set in for the day. Patio seating is also available out front. There's room for 4-5 bikes in the bike rack out front. read more

This was my second time to try this place. It will be my last.... Let me preface this with stating I am a bit of a coffee snob and I don't go to coffee shops to order drinks with syrup of any sort. I order black coffee, usually brewed as a single serving. This coffee is not suitable for consumption without massive amounts of milk, sugar, and/or syrups! The bean was so over roasted that all you could taste was burned beans. None of the normal flavor profiles in good coffee were present. I'd put these below Starbucks dark roast (my example of what NOT to do!). They should revisit their cupping sessions and actually give these beans a chance to taste good. Now to the brewing. Mine was a 12oz pour over. She used a wave dripper and a Hario kettle (that had been sitting there a while! The water was lucky to be 190...). Sadly there was an unused scale and timer sitting right there... Watching the coffee draw down, it looked like the grind was too fine as well. The times were a little too long for 12 oz and even in spite of the horrible roast, it tasted over extracted. If they had used their timer and perhaps occasionally taste tested their final product, they'd know something was wrong. All in all, it's really sad. Love this place. Well actually, only if the patio or bar by the garage door is open. The only thing is that the internet is SLOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWW I complain every time to no avail. Who else thinks Mr. Thomas should fork out an extra ~$40/month to more than 20x the internet speed? I'm estimating that about 30 minutes of my 2.5 hours there was wasted on waiting for slow internet. Very cute coffee shop. I was kind of surprised by the location as it was in what seemed to be a residential area. Street parking was a bit tight but we found a spot. They had a large selection of coffee and some of the drinks had a unique twist, including actual bacon on the maple bacon latte. My red-eye was flavorful and I was happy enough with the price. The atmosphere was also really nice. Pretty filled with food options (made by local places but not in-house) and the whole place had a nice feel. I also liked that they used manual espresso machines. That was a nice touch. I only wish we had gone when they were roasting the coffee. That would have been fun. read more

Great local coffee shop and amazing roasts. I always go to the university district shop each time that I fly into Albuquerque or while visiting Santa Fe, New Mexico! Nice people work there and amazing place to get work done. It's in a house and has a super chill atmosphere with art/photos all over the walls from local artists. The service was awful and we were not greeted as we entered the shop. Not even asked what we wanted to order...just had to assume it was time to tell him what we want. We ordered cafe mole and chai, in house. The chai was cold. The cafe mole was straight milk. When we went to address that we couldn't taste ANY coffee or chile in Cafe Mole (which contacts coffee and chile) we were told that the milk can be overpowering and that there were 2 shots in there. Didn't remake the drink or try to make anything right. After leaving a tip and paying $10 for whack ass coffee, we left extremely unhappy and didn't drink them. Beautiful Nob Hill cottage turned coffee shop with the best coffee selection in ABQ. Haven't tried any of the other drinks, but their regular black coffee stands perfectly on it's own. The interior is always clean and packed with students and bicyclers on the weekend, and the patio is perfect on a cool morning. Lots of small bites like donuts and burritos to pick too. Don't forget to pick up some beans on the way out, my favorite is the Hornet roast. read more

Good atmosphere but very inconsistent drinks. Many more coffee shops are popping up in the area with more consistency and better pastries. It is very easy to skip this one and go to another like farmacy or three little birds. I won't write it off completely though. read more

Visited this establishment the very first time and I was pleasely surprised how decent this place is. They sure have quite a section that will mostly likely suits your current mood. I came here for the purpose of trying out the place so I ordered a few. I had tried the Mizudashi (cold brew), is was mild with the right amount of bitterness. I personally do not drink cold brew because I prefer pour over, but this was a decent one. The drip coffee for the day ( forget me for I did not remember the beans they were offering that day other than it's a Brasil beans) , and the Matcha latte. Over all a decent coffee place, I had a great time hanging out with the fam there, will try other location next time when I am in town. read more

I love this place for settling in and studying. I'm not a coffee connoisseur but they have a hhuuuuge coffee selection and will help you choose one if you know nothing about coffee like me. I have been a frequent customer of the original Michael Thomas for decades - meetings, morning coffee, bulk beans, etc. Since moving my office to Nob Hill, I have been splitting my time, reluctantly, between both locations, as the Silver Street location is very convenient. From the beginning, I noticed a drastic difference in customer service between the two, which has come to a head today. I was there with my friend, who has also been a loyal customer for decades. We were there for a cup of coffee and breakfast, and he also wanted to exchange some beans that were obviously a bad batch - they made he and his wife sick the few times they brewed it. My friend is a chef and knows coffee - if he says the beans are off, they are off. The staff hassled him in line, especially the manager who I later discovered is the owner's daughter. He said - "you guys discuss this, we're going to go drink our coffee", and we sat. The owner's daughter later came to our table with a fresh bag of beans to exchange, but proceeded to condescend him in front of other customers. "Just so you know, we're not responsible for your tummy." At this point, even I was frustrated. My friend explained that if he were given a bad food or drink product anywhere else, it would simply be exchanged, no questions asked, but the owner's daughter continued to push it. Typically, and this is the case with the Nob Hill Michael Thomas, people who are really good at their craft - roasters, brewers, chefs, etc. - are given a bit of leeway because of the quality of product they produce. I will never visit this location of Michael Thomas again. My friend was treated very rudely and embarrassed in front of other customers. It shouldn't matter, but combined, we spend thousands of dollars at Michael Thomas each year. Bottom line: If a customer purchased a product that they are not satisfied with, replace it. I'm not saying the customer is always right, which is an adage I don't believe, but why argue with somebody who is trying to give you their money? Do you want to lose the single product to the garbage, or lose the customer who buys the same thing every week? Per Michael Thomas' website, their goal is to provide a quality product and quality service. Doing both at the same time is not always possible, but if you fail at one, make sure you nail the other. read more

I have been here a handful of times and I really enjoy it. Most of the times have I gone to study or just grad a coffee. During mid-terms and final times this place can get pretty busy, since it is so close to the university. That being said I have never not been able to find a seat in the coffee shop. There are two different rooms that you can sit in, along with plenty of outlets for laptops. They also have a nice courtyard area that I have used a few times, it's pretty small with just a few tables. I like to order their cold brew coffee. It's perfect on hot afternoons and it's not too bitter. I will defiantly be going back to this place when I'm in the area, check it out if you are in the area too! read more

Between 2014 and 2016, quality of MTC has declined substantially. Their patio with garden is still a beautiful place to chill on a sunny afternoon, but coffee is sour (the worst possible sin for a good coffee shop), and latte and specialty drinks are absolutely not worth the money. WiFi is slowwww.... and a dirty restroom with no lock doesn't help either. TLDR: If you are looking for a coffee shop without good coffee or WiFi, this is the place to be. Otherwise, avoid. read more
