Came here to meet up on a date. I got their dark chocolate coffee which was surprisingly good. They have seating areas outside and inside although, I liked the outside when the weather was nice. They have a really nice patio area where you can chill out with your friends and enjoy the sun. The inside has a very peaceful ambiance and I can tell why this place is so popular on the weekends. I will definitely be back to try out their nitro coffee which seems to be the buzz right now. read more

Michael Thomas is the kind of place that uses coffee ice cubes because they're a truly thoughtful spot with great customer service- they'll make sure you get what you actually want every time. And of. Purse...really good coffee, including drip coffee. Also an awesome spot for getting work done, strikes the balance between nice and quiet and still a spot to hangout, probably because the layout has options, including the back courtyard and a little side room off of the main sitting area inside AND a spot for stools and people watching out the front where they have a big garage door window. Decent seating, but couches and relaxing area/quiet room for studying/meetings would be a welcome addition. I go to the original location on Carlisle to get my weekly beans and only go to the location on Bryn Mawr when the other one is closed. Today, 9/2 around 3:00PM or so, really unfriendly service provided. This is the second time that I've had this experience. Two young women working who gave me the sense that I was asking a lot of them to take my money and grind my coffee beans the way I want it. Have to say that I've had nothing but GREAT service at the Carlisle location. I will return there, but it will be a long while before I return to the other store. The ambiance and the atmosphere pass for a coffee shop, but that is where the buck stops in my experience at Michael Thomas. My disappointment began when ordering my red Chile breakfast burrito only to watch it plopped on a plate still wrapped in foil and cold like a corpse (Happy Halloween). Having drug myself out of bed, hopped into my car and consciously drove to Michael Thomas, I did not expect that I would have to warm up a rubbery breakfast myself. Note to Management: When selling a 16 ounce cup of coffee beverages, don't put it in a 8, 9, 10, or 11 ounce cup. A patron is paying for what is listed in your establishment. I was in town for training and while looking for another address since I don't know Albuquerque very well, I happened to drive past this particular coffee house. It was quaint and esthetically pleasing. I consider myself "coffee savvy" having lived in Phoenix, San Francisco, were I have frequented many coffeehouse and have also attended the annually held "Coffee Fest" in Seattle Washington... twice, but I digress. The day after I discovered this coffeehouse and read the great reviews on Yelp, I stopped in and ordered a 16 ounce Cappuccino. This was on 8/24/15 at 4:04 according to my receipt. Paid a total of $5.17 which also included a $1.00 tip. I went there after my training and I was ready to relax and enjoy the wonderful coffee that I had read about. Mind you, the coffeehouse was nice and eclectic. However, when I got my cappuccino in a oddly shaped brown mug which looked slightly larger than a standard sized cup (which is about 6 ounces), I didn't say anything at first. My ink of my pen spilled all over my fingers and I chose to deal with that first. Once I sat down, at closer inspection, I guarantee...if half of the beverage would be taken out and measured, it would not have been 8 ounces. I noticed other people had larger mugs, two different sizes which were larger than mine. I wasn't going to make a big deal about it so after I had finished my cappuccino and before I put the cup in the tub with the rest of the used dishes and cups, I took the mug to the young barista that served it to me. I asked him if my mug was actually 16 ounces. He and the young girl barista that was with him gave me a look of contempt...as if I had asked something idiotic. He said that it was their medium sized cup. Wow! Right! The word "Medium" does not automatically equate, in my mind, with the 16 ounces...Anyone? Am I wrong? The barista asked if I wanted more coffee, in a bigger cup...he said it in a way that made me feel as though I was that "one" customer that everyone hates, who always is trying to bully someone to get "something for nothing." I am not one of them. Because he placed me in an awkward position, I politely said, "No." Here is an example of how someone with great customer service would have handled the situation. Without hesitation and empathically would have said, "I'm not sure if it is actually 16 ounces but I will talk to my manager as soon as I have a chance. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. In the meantime, can I offer you more coffee?" Offering a customer a little more coffee won't hurt you much. However, when all is said and done, losing a customer(s) will cost you far more than a few ounces of coffee. I will be in Albuquerque for more training next month and I will patron other place where I feel respected and appreciated. Without people like me (regardless of color or sex)...baristas like them wouldn't be employed. read more

Came here around 9:00am and the place was decently busy. Cute little local coffee shop with a nice courtyard in the front. I ordered the Iced Latte and a breakfast burrito with green chile. The coffee was great, as was the burrito (even though it was not from there, but another local restaurant). This is Michael Thomas' second location and I am a fan of the larger space here. The shop itself is quite cute with a home-y feel and a gorgeous patio with outdoor seating. The seating inside is a bit limited, so beware during colder months. I've had several drinks here. Their espresso drinks seem to be hit or miss in terms of quality from one of the best lattes I've had to a mediocre, tepid, "mocha" that didn't taste at all like chocolate. Where they really shine is with their large variety of house roasted coffees prepared in a variety of ways (my personal favorite is their pour over coffee). This place is definitely worth a stop, especially if you stick to their brewed coffees rather than their espresso drinks. read more

Even though the bicycle rack is really small and non permanent feeling, they do provide a bicycle rack which I appreciate. The Michael Thomas Coffee Roaster is of course a coffee shop and I went in there today and well what can I say the coffee selection is very open and I loved how they made the coffee right in front of me and the smell of it was to die for. I wish I could have chosen the type of beans to use for my coffee because they of course had a lot. Why I chosen this coffee shop is that I pass it a lot and I always wanted to see what kind of coffee they would serve and what the choices were. The Michael Thomas coffee roaster is a very little shop with an outdoor patio and is part of a little plaza and well the environment is calm and relaxing as it sits in a neighborhood but as you're in the coffee shop you can't really hear the outside world and that's when you know this place is relaxing. My experience in this coffee shop is good enough that I will go back when I have the time again because the coffee was good of course that I wish I had more and the people who were working at the time seem to like their jobs as I was ordering the drink they were patient with me because I did not know what I wanted. The people who were already their look to be enjoying themselves while they sip their coffees and they talk with each other, you could say the atmosphere was very good for that and well it made me feel at peace for the moment. Everything is not perfect, so you have some flews to point out. Since its not at all big it has limited sitting so there are those people who have to take up the whole table to do some work and what not. The coffee on the menu is shown but what are they to be exactly, they have no description of what they are so you have to be someone who knows coffee to get what you want. But all in all I enjoyed my time in the coffee shop sure it could have been better but for me they have good coffee and I will go back for more, its just there environment they have to work on. read more

On our road trip across the U.S., this has been the best coffee shop we've been to. They have thirty-plus different types of coffee, and they'll make whatever you want via pour-over or siphon. I had the fair trade Guatemala (pour over) and my friend ordered the Ethiopia Sidamo (Hario siphon). We loved both. The staff was great--helpful, knowledgable, and friendly. The setup is great, too--plenty of seating inside, and cool spots outside in both the front and back of the store. Chill and laid back. They are coffee masters. Any type of coffee made using any method. Barista brewers frequently give demos on how to make coffee using lesser known methods (e.g. Woodneck). They are one of the premier coffee houses in ABQ. Their coffee is always great and the staff is always friendly. The only thing to be aware of is the lack of seating. I guess a fully coffee shop is a good thing but not always easy to find a table. As it does start warming up, their outdoor patio should solve this problem. read more

Also sorry, but the snark factor for this place is just too much- for a place that makes you microwave your own burrito and tells you even though you brought your own to-go mug it's 2.50 but with free refills (that makes no sense I'm clearly not having coffee here!?) they need to not be so snobbish. This is a very cool coffee spot In a trendy area. Just Off the busy street of Central, Michael Thomas Coffee Brewster serves many different types of tasty coffees and treats. The atmosphere is that of a library with quite work spaces and meeting rooms for small study groups. The outdoor courtyard is beautiful and tranquil. Easily my favorite ABQ coffee shop. The best ambiance I've found, apart from the lack of comfy chairs. But...i can't give it more stars because of the cell phone situation. Because they are allowed, certain tone deaf people have lengthy and loud "private" conversations in this very shared space. If they had a clue, they would just step outside. If i wanted to study or drink a $5 coffee shop in a phone booth, I would. (Remember phone booths?) A certain amount of convivial chatter is a great white-noise backdrop to working in a cafe (why most of us are here at this moment and most of the times i've been here), but obnoxious one-sided cell phone conversations do not fall into that category. Michael Thomas, please protect your customers' peace of mind and work space. Then you will truly be 5 star. read more

Sadly, we read the reviews and decided to try this coffee shop as we were driving through. I tasted the brewed coffee and it was cold. I thought that was weird. Both my husband and I ordered latte's and both were Luke warm at best. My latte tasted like they forgot to put the coffee (espresso in). Needless to say, we were quite disappointed (this is the first negative review I have ever written) but thought I should let people know. read more

I love the atmosphere, it's one of my favorite coffee shops in town, good snack selections too. The unfortunate thing is that they consistently over roast their beans. When you over roast you don't get the actual nuances and flavor of the beans, it's a real shame. I've heard others who really know their coffee say this too. read more
