Based on this one and only visit I'm a fan. My combo was excellent and the beef was as well. I like my beef or combo dipped or dunked or baptized or whatever the term is for simply serving me a juicy half falling apart sandwich and they delivered. Plenty of beef on the good bread but it could use more giardiniera for my taste. The fries were one of the best anywhere. Fresh cut and served hot and fresh and salted perfectly. There's plenty of seating inside and a few tables outside. Parking is very tight and limited. I haven't been up the street to Johnnys in a while but if the line is too long just come here or just come here. read more

This has to be the worst place when it comes to customer service!!! We have been long time customers but the service has gone from bad to worse. Today I tried calling to place our weekly order and after multiple calls (with no one answering) finally someone answer's with a terrible argumentative attitude. He says, "what's the emergency? I'm short handed and busy", I asked can I place an order? His response, "no, I prefer you come in instead". Ok, so he preferred to argue while he could have taken my order as they normally do. so we called in a pretty big order from this place and went to go pick it up... the guy (Christian) at the counter refused to take our payment because we had some cash and wanted to put the rest on a credit card. Please note, we have done this before at this place so we did not give it a second a thought.. The guy at the counter says he can't take our payment and as soon as we mention that we had done this before, some other guy (eating a hot dog & chewing with his mouth open) comes out and starts yelling: DONT TAKE THEIR ORDER! DONT SELL THEM ANYTHING! He is rude and unfriendly an older gentleman was in line in front of me asking why they don't answer the phone and the owner basically was like because he don't have time. NEW OWNERS!!! THANK GOD!!! Last time I came to Michaels Beef (about a year ago) I vowed to never return. The previous owners ran it into the ground, food was horrible. This is some damn good food! I had the char grilled Merkt's Cheddar Burger, fresh cut fries, and drink, all for about $8. Burger was VERY good, fresh not frozen meet, about 1/3lb for the single and grilled perfect. Michaels has always been known for their fresh cut fries, and they didn't dissapoint. The whole place was renovated, looks new and modern inside, and I will be back again and again. BIG BONUS - they have kids meals for $4.49. Now I can come back with the kids and not break the bank. Great job new owners!!! read more

The co workers don't know each others name.....Excellent food, questionable customer service . I'm visiting my parents, having a day out with my 80 yr old mother, and through a recommendation, we decided to stop their for an early dinner. When I approached the counter, I was asking about the menu item selection and what was included menu item, the cashier was clearly annoyed when I observed him rolling his eyes and mumbling under his breath in front of me. I immediately went to the manager, told him of the incident and concluded my order. After picking up my order, I asked for the cashier name and his co worker said he didn't know his name was. Used to come jet because they had Merks cheddar for fries and such. Now they don't. Which makes them just another beef and hotdog joint.

Passed by this place so many times and always wanted to stop in but just never did.. well, than the beef craving hit and my fellow yelpers who almost always steer me in the right direction, did it once again. It's been a few weeks since I visited this establishment with my friend. I must say, the last time I was here was more than 13 years. I had enjoyed coming here because of the food and great service. Well, both were greatly lacking this time and it might be a long time before I return. I ordered a gyro with a large fry. My friend ordered a Maxwell Street style hot dog which came with fries, and he added and order of mozzarella sticks. I remember they used to sell beer. He abruptly said no, and that they haven't sold beer for quite a long time. A very salty person this older man who was handling the register. He looked like he didn't want to be there, or that was his demeanor. As we sat and took our orders out of the bag, my friend noticed that his order of fries was missing. So, he went to the pick-up window and told the cook. the cook gave him a look as if he were lying. He got his order of fries, but the cook kept throwing ugly looks our way. Luckily my friend didn't notice and I just blew him away. Thinking I will never go out of my way to come back here. Oh, and there fries were way overcooked. Well, finally got to try the "new" Michaels since they re-opened. Definitely an improvement. Ordered a combo, sausage and fries. They were a little too wet for my taste, but flavorwise, they were great. Took a little while to make, but in fairness, they had just had a rush, so understandable. During the pandemic I have tried to support local businesses. Today I went to Michael's beef House for lunch. The cooks were wearing their masks. However the boss and one other gentleman did not. If they do not support my staying well and healthy and do not feel the need to comply with the mask requirement, I don't feel a need to support them anymore. read more

I've seen alot of comments on Yelp and Google reviews that solidify my experience with him. Now I don't know if he's racist or stuff like others have commented, but I think it's in his best interest not to be the face of the business when people first come into order. Pete, you are not in the construction business you are in the service business and there is a reason why "Service with a Smile" is a quote. You make patrons feel unwanted and uncomfortable while they are trying to give you their business. Please do yourself a favor and hire a cashier and just sit in the back. So good! I was having a hard time finding a place with burgers and maybe something different but as I was driving I spotted the sign for Michael's. I immediately pulled over onto a residential street and looked them up. Success! Just what me and the kids were looking for! I didn't have much time, so asked how long they would be - 7-10 minutes, which worked perfectly. I was up the road, put in my order - Hot Dog (2), Mertz Burger (2), fries - and everything was ready right in time. The inside is clean and welcoming, such a nice atmosphere even though there's no indoor seating! Great to see. The burgers were huge - neither of my kids finished there's - and my two Chicago style hotdogs had me full too. Plus, we got large fries to share, which was HUGE! (And don't get me started and the three shakes - chocolate, strawberry, Oreo.) We ended up with a lot of leftover food, which just means I get to experience it once again. First off, if you like a restaurant that is cheap with its ingredients you found the right place. I ordered a gyro plate and asked if I could get a little extra salad instead of the fries. The person at the register looked at me then looked down at the register shaking his head looked up and said NO! I asked are you serious? Well, the dog itself was barely warm. The dressings on it were nice but the cool hot dog spoiled it. Pretty much says it all. I really liked this place when I tried it last week because their are few spots that serve all sorts of fast food options that the entire family can enjoy and I really love fresh hand-cut fries and they have it all. My husband and daughter in law enjoyed their Italian beef sandwiches, I had a polish sausage sandwich and it really tastes like a Maxwell polish with grilled onions mustard; I was missing the hot peppers. My son had the pizza puff and the boys enjoyed their Vienna Beef hotdogs which came with fries and a drink for a reasonable cost. They also serve their hamburgers with Merkdt cheese as an option and I love, love, love Merkdt anything! I also saw a corn tortilla soup choice that my husband wanted had he known. They have TVs so you can enjoy the games. They have ample seating for a large group of 8-10 at a high top table or you can push a couple of small tables together for more seating and there are rows of booths here too! So this place was really good. It was clean, the staff was friendly. The food was tasty. So why the four stars? The bread for my Philly Cheesesteak was just a bit soft. It wasn't dripping grease. The fries were fresh cut and not soggy, which was a definite plus. The hot dog my partner got was decent, but he said it wasn't anything spectacular. The parking lot was small, so parking might be a bit of a problem if they are busy. They weren't busy when we were there as it was close to closing. Definitely a place to come back to. read more

Like a lot of the other reviewers here, I was was kind of taken aback by how anti-hospitable the owner is at the updated Michaels. But I really like their Italian ice, and have been back many times; I can attest that every customer is treated with equal disdain, so I suggest not taking it personally. I wouldn't even call it bad customer service, because the orders are taken and delivered with workmanlike efficiency. It's just that you won't be greeted, or thanked, or responded to beyond minimal requirements. While I have a soft spot for misanthropes working in the hospitality industry, it might not be the best idea as a business plan. Great remodel, btw. read more

I just ordered food from there for my husband to pick up. When he got there, the fries were old, shriveled and cold. He asked for new fries and they told him he would have to pay for another order if he wanted more fries.... so with how low this establishments standards on fries, I would definitely not recommend coming here. I've been going to Michael's for over 20 years now (wow to think about it). From 2005-2016 I don't know what happened but it went really downhill, and I had pretty much stopped going there at all. When I saw that "new management" took over, I figured I would give it another try. The new owner has really "beefed" up the place (no pun intended). Everything is brand new, and CLEAN! I never had Merkt's cheddar cheese on a burger before, but it was awesome. The fries were perfectly cooked and salted. They've won me back, and it's nice to have another place in Oak Park on the list to go for lunch. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars..... the gentleman who rang me up (seemed like he might be the owner) seemed grumpy and didn't care whether I was there or not. He was carrying on with the cooks about what he was doing this weekend, and I was inconveniencing him when I was ready to order. No "hello" or "how are you," and when I started to tell him what I wanted, he cut me off to finish his convo with the cook, then looked at me like 'ok now I'm ready.' Not even a "thank you" after I paid, only did I want a receipt. It seemed like his attitude was that I was so privileged to be there. Mind you, there was only 1 other customer in the place. I feel bad cause I really wanted to like this place and continue with the high praises from everyone. I just thought it was okay. I mean it was a step above a greasy spoon place with a nice revamped interior. I like the branding a lot, casual, hip vibes with the screen menus, wood-style walls, and dark tables that is clean (including bathrooms). But the outside is similar to a typical greasy spoon restaurant and I felt the food was somewhere in between the two levels. Star of the show was the fries. Really enjoyed them, especially with the cheddar sauce. Got the Cheddar Burger (1/3lb), Lg fry, corn dog, cheddar sauce, and a Philly steak, just under $19. The prices really are fair, especially for what's around the neighborhood. Cheddar burger has what seems to be their signature cheese, the Merkt's, which has a bit of a boozy or malty taste to it (it's a signature beer cheese from WI), but it messes with the texture a bit and leaves it almost grainy. A bit heavy on the grilled onion, and the thin 1/3lb. patty just didn't satisfy my craving for a good burger. Philly steak was mediocre, really lacked some flavor and was almost as soggy as a wet Italian beef. Add a little more Worcestershire sauce or soy sauce to add some saltiness and it would've been just right. Maybe switch out the mozzarella cheese for the cheese sauce, and they'd hit a home run with this. If I wanted better beef I'd cruise down to Johnny's and if I were aiming for a better burger, I'd snag one at Burger Moovment, both just down the road. Delicious food! Good prices! My family loves eating here and so do I. We have had the beef,the gyro, the salads and the fries and the milkshakes and Italian ice they do everything well! Definitely great having this place in the neighborhood! Love the remodel.
