Bought my new comp from here after Best Buy bored me to tears with their upsell practices. Very, very annoying! The guy I worked with (Hector) was INCREDIBLY helpful. I'm a very serious electronics buyer, so I want to make sure what I'm paying is what it's worth. He answered all of my questions and guided me to what he thought was best. I pretty much love this comp because it was exactly what I needed. However, the Mac section guy just stared at me like I had a third arm and was trying not to. I've been shopping at Microcenter for 3 years. I'm a computer (systems) builder. Regarding their customer service and knowledge, the sales associates are well above the kid's at BestBuy. Also, when you try to find the best price, they shop around on the web to compare against other retailers, such as Besb Buy, NewEgg, and Tiger Direct. Regarding their return policy; I got myself in trouble a couple of times by returning a number of video cards, motherboards, and CPU's. You have no idea of flexible they were with me. Unbelievable. Especially with CPU's. One time, I used the CPU for a couple of weeks, and according to their policy, you can only exchange for the same item. Well, the manager, Glenn Rorison, let me return it for a totally different CPU. Regarding the items they carry; they stock a majority of the current computer [building] technologies, plus as stated above, are very competitive. In fact, you wont find better prices on CPU's any where else. As a bonus, if you have a TAX ID, you can actually save more money here than NewEgg. Tiger Direct is over-priced compared to Microcenter. Getting back to merchandise, MC usually gets the latest components in stock after an item has been released for a couple of weeks and depends on "supply and demand." In closing, the people who work there are not perfect. There were time when an associate swore they didnt have an item I needed and I just kept looking around and finally found it. I appreciate the level of world class service they offer and committment to change. Their is always something new on the horizon with MC; you're always in for anm awesome expereince. Funny thing, I used to work at microcenter. I can easily say that I knew very little about computers, but I was cute and persuasive and they put me in general sales. They have a training program, referred to as MicroCenter University which I do hold a degree in. The requirement to pass the course is memorizing and rewriting "the Gear" the store manifesto word for word, with no mispellings, all t's crossed, all i's dotted, in neat penmanship. I picked up some things pretty quickly, ask me how to find a printer cartridge or a ream of paper and I'm you're girl. Luckily there were some more knowledgeable people working there so each time some weirdo wanted a scsi cable to midi to usb to firewire to scsi to build their way back machine or hook up their commodore to a cat I could just call a coworker and have them figure it out. The most pleasant thing about my work detail there was meeting my dream companion who also worked on the sales floor. We didn't end up working there for very long, but 7 years later we're still together and we do get a kick out of wandering the microcenter halls. read more

My friend, who drove me (and actually picked out my laptop), ended up walking around the store and commenting on how crazy cheap everything was. He was literally so excited to be there. read more

It seems some of you had bad experiences with the salesmen here. However, generally when I go to any computer store I don't want to talk to a salesman. If I'm making a big purchase I'll do plenty of research online reading reviews from tons of people instead of deciding on the words of some saleman that I don't even know. If anybody is planning on making a big purchase of any kind I highly recommend doing plenty of research first as this will also give you time to think over how badly you need it and get you the best price. Also, if you talk to a salesman after you do your own research you'll know when someone's trying to trick you into something. Most salesmen I've talked to before like to sound like they know what they're talking about but in reality really don't. Most consumers never catch that though. Sure you may find better deals on some items online but if you look over their brochure they actually have great bargains now and then that you can't beat online. Not to mention you can have it right away. Their CPUs are also competitively priced with the internet and paying tax here will balance out with a store's shipping prices. A few bad things though. Their brochures will list a price for a certain item but when you see it on the rack there is no mention of the sale and it only shows the full price. Basically you have to double check the item with the brochure and then watch carefully as they ring it up. At least Best Buy does show all their sale prices on the racks. The last several times I've been there the lines have been horribly slow. For some reason there is often a lot of foreigners there and when they purchase something does Micro Center really need to know their home and email addresses? It takes the clerk an eternity to try to understand what the customer is saying and then type it in. I even told the guy in front of me that he did not have an email address just to hurry it along. Because of the horrendously slow lines I had to take a star off of my previous rating. Waiting a couple of days for my Newegg order to arrive beats waiting in line for 30 minutes. read more

Before you buy any electronics or computer items, visit Micro Center first since it very well may be cheaper there. For example, we almost bought a printer at OfficeMax but then decided to check out Micro Center first. Boy, was that a good decision! The exact same printer that we saw at OfficeMax was on sale at Micro Center for $70 less. Then, to be extra sure that we were getting the best deal, we went across the street to Tiger Direct to see what they had, but they didn't even have the printer we wanted. We've bought other things from Micro Center too, like a headset, a car cell phone charger and some cables. I think this store is really meant for computer geeks who like to build their own computers, but they have a lot of products for non-computer geeks, like myself. They also have an Apple section, TVs, cameras, printers, tech books and lots of other miscellaneous electronic and computer items. The sales staff at Micro Center can be a positive and negative. The sales staff on the floor are paid commission, so they can be a bit aggressive and even annoying. It seems like they have an overabundance of salesmen, and a different salesman is always coming up to you every two minutes asking if you need help. Obviously, this is better than having no salesmen available to help, but it can get a little annoying if you're just browsing. It's just something to keep in mind if you decide to check it out. Overall, I think Micro Center has some great sales and offers a good value to customers looking for electronics and computer items. Check it out before you buy! read more

I will be giving my business to Amazon and Newegg. Refunds are not prompt and take forever to credit. I am also not a fan of the sticker credit thing I feel like it's a tacky and pressure sales driven means by associates. Best Buy and Walmart don't do this and I don't think MicroCenter should do this either. Further the store was very disorganized in layout at both the Westmont and Chicago Elston locations with regards to the layout of the hobby electronics. The reason I shopped at MicroCenter was to have flexibility in returns for merchandise that was defective or did not work properly. Big fan here. A little background, though. Building computers sometimes makes me feel a little funny, like climbing the rope in gym class. I hate cats, but Martha, if you can point me in the right direction to find a cable to hook my computer into a dog, I'll love you forever. That being said, I'll never be found paying someone else to "fix" my computer, so I know nothing about their repair/service department. I've spent Friday nights poring over the power draw deltas of 5400 vs. 7200 rpm hard drives, the difference in dot pitch between a 32" monitor vs 1080p HDTV, and the different chipsets of socket 1156 motherboards that do or do not allow for usage of the integrated intel HD graphics on the i3 and i5 Clarkdale processors. (stay away from p55 unless you want to buy a separate graphics card!) So, um, yeah. I don't usually need much technical assistance in my selection. A simple "where can I find product xyz, rev b" is about all I need. And they've always been solid there. The pricing here is damn good for a brick-and-mortar. A lot of the stuff is competitive with online retailers; the CPU's are typically even better. Sure you pay the wonderful city of Chicago sales tax on it, but if something's broke and needs a part ASAP nothing beats the instant gratification of brick and mortar. I've especially been happy with ordering online for in-store pickup. Not always a super-quick counter, but when I need an extra long 90 degree SATAII cable to get a computer up and running, it's nice to go online, order it, and go pick it up. No hassle of worrying if they have what I'm looking for, if I'm looking in the right place...etc. Because even for me, the guy who can identify the brand, speed, and capacity of hard drives by their model number...it can be chaotic in there. But the money saved in packaging and merchandising contributes to the low prices. And, for the record, after re-reading that second paragraph, I'd just like to point out that I do, in fact, have sex. Went in yesterday looking to purchase a Raspberry Pi device. The sales clerk was unable to give me information, advice or anything else on the various packages being sold. When I asked if someone else in the store would be able to provide me with more information, the clerk responds with "No, I'm probably the one who knows the most." ... [Which was nothing] When I asked if there was someone who worked at the store who had tried Raspberry PI, and could provide me with advice, they responded with: "To be honest, we're all gamers here, and only work here to support our gaming habit." To say the least I was shocked by the utterly rude response from the clerk, as I approached check out counter with this item, it dawned on me that I would be better assured of my purchase on Amazon, and provided with better customer support, so I walked out and decided against purchasing it there. I must say the selection of items in an actual store was interesting and diverse, but the customer service- or lack thereof- really left a bad taste in my mouth. read more

Great - they have everything, and if you know something about gadgets, computers and all that type of stuff, you'll get it cheaper here than at Best Buy. That being said, the reason these guys are cheaper is because they skimp on the help. O MY F'n G these people suck. They're slower, less socially adjusted and kinda weird. Makes sense...they're computer geeks that probably all work there so they can get discounts to build there sweet gaming system. Yeah, I'm stereotyping (and I'm kind of one myself, with way cooler traits...and a girlfriend), but these guys are the people that know their stuff if you have a real question. So it's give and take with these guys. Knowledge in exchange for social skills and speedy response. One checkout line both times I've been there....10 people in line. What!? And the socio-tards all standing there rapping about their Everquest character, elf, fairy or knight. I mean the line was ridiculous - it took me 2 minutes to get what I wanted, 30 minutes to get out of the store. But they have all your computer needs at a cheaper price compared with now-dead Circuit City and Best Buy. Seriously though - if I have to go somewhere now to buy blank DVDs or network cable, I'm going to BB and paying 50% more just so I feel like a human and less like I'm in Tron. Today I went to Micro Center to pick up an internet order. I had stopped in at PetSmart - in the same shopping center - when I'd discovered they had had a power outage. I should have been alerted to the situation because of the traffic lights being out but thought nothing of it. The inside of PetSmart was sort of dimly lit but I didn't really notice all that much. When I got to the checkout I was asked for a credit card (which I thought was weird) and found out that all the computers were dead due to the outage. Having gone to the shopping center specifically for Micro Center, I'd hoped there would be no trouble there. Everybody at PetSmart was taking the situation with good humor. And it really didn't take much extra time going through the checkout procedure. Knowing what I wanted at Micro Center made it easy for me to enter the store. I picked up a couple of overstock extras, in addition to the laptop I'd ordered online. Jay Durand and Tymeka were so pleasant and accommodating that I was compelled to write a YELP review. You wouldn't know they had any issue whatsoever with their professional attitude about everything. Instead of feeling inconvenienced by the outage I felt as though we'd almost bonded over the wacky situation. A+ for Micro Center. read more

Ryan Ash is a total badass! Granted, he is still a salesman, but he only offered me things that would be useful to me and my situation as opposed to a blanket, one-size-fits-all prescription. I went in wanting to get a netbook, and instead of having some salesman give me a pitch and letting me walk out of there with something I was *not* going to be happy with, I got someone who was honest about how a netbook would be absolutely useless for me, even though all I really use a computer for is internet, word processing, movies, and music. I got a sweet Asus laptop for $500 (on sale!), a discount on the full, academic version of Office. Admittedly I was totally jonesing for a refurbished laptop, but if I was more of a gamer I'd aim for one of those. Ok, so on this experience, I wanted to start the place out with 3 stars right off the bat and then judge them from then on out. Do and see something terribly wrong and it's a minus star. Do or see something done just right, plus star. And then there's a whole other sliding scale to consider the overall experience, so I guess it's not that big of a science. So we're preparing to go on a massive road trip and wanted to get a laptop to do a travel blog while we're on the road. Plus, only having one computer for two people tends to get annoying. But the catch is, we don't have a lot of money. We really only wanted a laptop to do internet and light, light graphics work (the heavy graphics work will be delegated to the future-Mr.-Desktop-yet-to-be-purchased because of my unemployed ass). First impression, we walked in close to closing - so not a lot of people. But the store was clean and it was easy to find where we needed to go. The prices seemed very competitive. We came in after seeing a laptop being refurbished and in-stock for a ridiculous price. So we were on the hunt for that specific laptop. Couldn't find it. So, where's a sales person to assist? Nowhere to be seen. Hello? Anyone here? No... ok, let's go on the hunt. Minus a star, down to two stars unless something saves you. After a while searching, we found Marta. Marta was great. She informed us that the laptop we saw online was still being refurbished and wasn't ready (booo!). I wasn't too keen on it anyway, since it didn't come with a battery and power cord - yea, some fun that would be! So we looked at another, she check to see if they had an open box that we could buy at a reduced rate, but alas, they didn't have one. So we got a refurbished Compaq Presario for $399. I think it was a good deal (it's $450-$500 new elsewhere online) and I really liked how Marta answered every single one of my questions and I fired a good amount mainly dealing with Vista versus XP and everything. She knew her stuff and was a no-nonsense kinda gal while still being polite. I know all sales people have to do the warranty pitch and try to upsell you on other things and Marta was no exception. However, she did it in the least painful way: quick and when she knew you wouldn't nibble, she didn't press the issue. It was great! So, plus one star for Marta - back up to three. Then, as we were checking out, we had a friendly cashier who we started joking around with. She seemed to genuinely enjoy her job. That was cool to see. Then, as we were standing there, the manager walked over and asked us if we found everything we needed and got the help we wanted. Then he thanked us for our business and said that he really appreciates it and gave us his card if we had any questions or anything. I know it's a small gesture and it's his job, but that was just a really nice touch. So, plus one more star. I enjoyed my experience here and will definitely come back for my computer needs. I've read some of the other reviews and while I can imagine the long lines (especially on weekends) and while I was annoyed with not being able to find a salesman right away, in the end, I left thinking "Wow." Saw this place as I was driving to Best Buy. Aggravated by bumper-to-bumper traffic, I decided to give this local shop a visit as I needed a wireless router for the new crib. Similar in some ways to any retail electronics giant, this place is broader in depth than breadth. You won't find the latest DVD box-set or a new dishwasher here... just computer parts and peripheral items. I had a very knowledgeable and helpful salesperson and the line moved quickly at checkout. I live only a few blocks from Micro Center's Chicago/Elston location. When I need technical books in a hurry - I'm a programmer and sysadmin - it is therefore the first place I go. Unfortunately, the book section in this store is so disorganized that, as often as not, I walk away frustrated and disappointed, without buying anything at all; and then I order the book I needed from Amazon. The book section in the Elston store is absolute chaos. Books are shelved at random without regard to subject. Recently, I was looking for books on the PHP programming language, and found them spread across three different shelves (in the same aisle, at least); but books on the Ruby language were scattered to at least four different locations in different aisles! Books on widely varying subjects are randomly intermingled, usually with absolutely no regard to the labels affixed to the shelves. In the midst of these programming books, I found books on digital cameras, improving one's resume, business communication, using an iPod, and for Microsoft certification. (I'm sure people who were looking for those books were equally frustrated by the presence of programming language books in their "iPod section"). Even in the area where most of the PHP books could be found, it seemed like every alternate book was about Java or C# - they'd all been jumbled together. Additionally, shelf space is wasted on ridiculously out-of-date books that will never sell - that I continue to see, time and time again, on every visit. There are still books there about Internet Explorer 4, published in 1997. Internet Explorer is now at version 8. No one will ever buy a book about IE4, which is more than ten years obsolete. Its presence on the shelf gives the whole section an aura of neglect and abandonment - like a tumbleweed in a Western film. Similarly, there are books and videos on installing and configuring Windows NT, which is similarly ancient. I spent over an hour there that night, going through the entire book section twice, before finally accepting that the book I wanted *probably* wasn't there, and that I'd have to order it from Amazon with next-day shipping. I would love to support a local business rather than ordering online, but the book section of the Micro Center on Elston does nothing more than waste my time. read more

This Place is complete trash! I purchased a micro center refurbished Mac book pro from here, the guy selling it to me convinced me to purchase a 1 yr. protection plan and said if i have any problems that they would be covered. All i had to do was bring the computer in and if the repairs totaled more than the computer is worth, then they would just give me a credit for the value of the computer. Sounds good right? Except the computer did malfunction. It shut off on its own at random from day one. Anytime it did, the project i was working on would auto save so no harm no foul, that is until the computer shut off permanently and wouldn't turn back on. I took the computer in for repairs and the guy tell me if i want backup my data its another $100 depending on if the problem was the hard drive, i may lose all my work. I refused to do the backup simply because i dont have a spare hundred dollars to throw at this refurbished computer i already paid for in good faith. The repair guy tells me i will get a call from micro center within 48 hrs, to let me know what the problem was. 5 days later i had to call micro center and request a status report because they never reached out to me. The person i spoke to couldn't even find my computer at first. After waiting on hold for 10 minutes he finally finds it and tells me its being worked on. About 30 minutes later i get a call from microcenters repair people and they tell me that the issue is a software issue and that it isnt covered under the warranty i purchased! The software installed was already on the computer before i even got it and if the software prevents my hardware from working properly, how is it not covered under the warranty!? This is complete bullshit, and false advertisement! Not only that but all of my work will be deleted during the repair which costs an even $100 to fix. This place is run by scam artists. Do not shop here! I called to speak to the store manager and at 1:30 pm on a sunday he is nowhere to be found. They didn't say he was off that day. They just cant find him. I will do everything i can to dissuade people from shopping at this Microcenter. They're incompetent and shady the way they operate. From now on just save yourself the headache and go to best buy! I even went to the micro center website listed on my receipt to file a complaint and the website no longer exists!! They are truly unhelpful in every regard. Screw this place! I have a love-hate relationship with Microcenter. I love their component prices. Their processors are generally cheaper than you can even find on the Internet. I hate having to find a computer salesperson to get my parts, and I also hate having to take pieces of paper up to the cashier to get my stuff. The Staff is knowledgeable and pleasant - NO high pressured sales artists. Visited Labor Day weekend Sunday! I just want the front end line to get it together with its number of associates present to checkout the amount of ladies and gents customers who are standing/waiting uncomfortably. NO shopping baskets for convenience seemed to be provided to customers. Am I wrong about this? A guard from the Securitas contract company standing at the front part of the entrance observing customers coming in is in my opinion a waste of time if you ask me. Although, the security guard is there perhaps to act as a deterrent and check receipts - it is sufficient for an employee of the store to carry out that duty. Micro Center's contract with Securitas security guard company for that store is completely useless.. You may want to reconsider-- as it may be a waste of MIcro Center's money. Jon read more

I have never wanted to write a review in my life but my horrible experience with micro center put me over the edge. Absolutely the most rude and unhelpful employees I have ever spoke with. The manager there couldn't even help me. She told me she was too busy. I wish I could give NEGATIVE STARS. I'm still dealing with them because of a refund that they never charged back to my credit card. It's been three weeks and still haven't got my money back from a piece of s***t laptop they sold me. There is not one thing good about this store other then decent prices on laptops. But if you do purchase one don't get the extended warranty because I've heard some horror story's about that as well. I used Microcenter's custom build-a-pc service and had a great experience. The staff is much more knowledgeable than the staff at other big box stores. Dale from sales did a great job answering my questions about parts, and Nate from the service department did a great job assembling my computer. The only down side was that I wanted some particular parts that weren't available at Microcenter, so I had to buy them elsewhere and bring them in. The selection at Microcenter is better than other brick and mortar stores but not as good as online stores. Overall, I highly recommend read more

I can't believe I haven't reviewed this store. It's one of my favorite electronics stores, though I tend to only buy the stuff I can't get on Amazon.com, which is just about everything. The have a tremendous selection of laptop cases, recordable media, hard drives, printers and a nice dedicated Mac section that's been in existence since the mid 1990s. There aren't too many large computer stores in Chicago anymore; this is probably the only one that is exclusively for all things computers. read more

Holy crap does this place suck. Sure there's lots of stuff there, but I didn't find the selection to be any better than the other big box stores. What really makes it suck is the staff. There are a couple of knowledgeable folks but they're few and far between. The stock is way disheveled and it is damn near impossible to get anyone to help you out. I've had to go up and 'bother' the sales people hanging out shooting the breeze with each other every time I've been here. I'm in IT myself so I'm no dumbass where this goes, and typically all I need is to know where something is or if it is in stock. Nothing that should merit eye rolls. Yes there is a need for a very large seemingly unorganized computer store in the city. To be fair to the store since they are located behind the worst intersection in the state of Illinois, namely Damen and Elston 6 way intersection, I dread every time I have to come here. The store is very large and they carry a very large inventory on just about anything you may need to fix your own or your friends computer. They also carry a very large collection of televisions, laptops, printers, desktops, macs, books, electronics, hard drives, memory, network cards, cases, mice, keyboards, cables, tools, book. oh I said that already. Seriously these guys have a ton of stuff or junk depending on your view point. The cash registers runs way too slow for my liking, even the fast checkout system they have in place gets over complicated by slow cashiers. Their return policy is very good, a little too inflexible but ok. I love their Mac section, yes I am biased when it comes to PC's vs. Mac's I only use PC's when I have too such as at work. other than that I would never use a PC ever. All in all this is a great store, short of the traffic, the slow cashiers and the bit of un organization I would recommend this store to anyone needing computer parts and or related electronic equipment. read more

I'm a computer nerd and systems major so I'm always looking for something computer related. Micro Center is a great place for someone like me and you, if you're like me. I have usually always found what I'm looking here and usually at a better price than most of the Big-box stores. And they DO have price matching, which includes Amazon.com as an option for comparison (as long as it's sold and shipped by Amazon), which can save you more money. There are certain things that you will definitely 'get what you pay for' but in other cases, you can actually find something really awesome at a great price. And they have a really good return policy if you do find a dud in the bunch. The only reason it doesn't get a better rating from me is because of the staff. They are quite unpredictable. I've gone in on weekdays and weekends and the service is always all over the place. Sometimes you'll go in and they will be super friendly; you'll be greeted straight away, you'll be asked if you need help and if you do, they will be genuinely happy to help you. Other times, they will avoid you like the plague! And it's not that they disappear, they are around, but they are more concerned with talking with each other then helping you. And if you do ask for help, don't expect them to be happy. They will give you as little attention as possible before slinking back to finish their 'more important than you' conversations. SO, if you don't really know what you need or have a lot of questions, or are generally lost when it comes to technology, shopping here might not pan out to be the greatest experience ever. But if you know what you want, or you're more of a 'self service' type of person, you'll be okay. So I guess my best advice would be, come prepared or you're gonna have a bad time. read more
