Midas 158 E Main Rd Middletown runs a classic bait & switch fraud with an advertisement for $34.99 synthetic blend oil change -- they will tell you your car cannot have anything but full synthetic and then offer you the full synthetic change at the advertised $69.99 which is not accurate - there are $15 more of fees and taxes bringing the total to over $85 !!! When I told them that my car DOES accommodate conventional oil changes (nevermind blended synthetic) and then they changed the story - that they do not have blended synthetic oil (they "just ran out" supposedly) and they only have synthetic oil. They also alluded to the fact that they DO NOT ALWAYS HONOR THE COUPON. Please don't go here. I've heard bad things about this place specifically from girls who they tried to swindle and just charge for things that didn't need done. But I went there anyway to get my inspection- because it was convenient and my car is in great shape so I thought it would be a quick in and out. Well that was a massive mistake. They said my car needed all new tires, brake pads, and rotors and quoted me 2k. Luckily I know enough about cars to say no, that's insane and leave. When I said no, the guy offered to pass the tires if I got the brakes done with him for $700 - extremely shady. I quickly left, wasted $55, and took it to a place I trust later that week and everything passed. A clear money grab hoping people who don't know better will just pay it. read more

Absolutely disappointed in this place. My husband dropped his Van off to get the oil changed and tires rotated. Before we left the house he sprayed cleaner on the front tires to mark. As we've heard stories from locals of their past visits and hoped they were wrong. After all just a simple service. After waiting all day my husband called the shop for status. They informed him it was all set. When he went to pick up the Van he asked if they'd completed the oil change and tire rotation. Instantly the tech assured me they had. He didnt seem too surprised when I informed him I was 100% sure that the service he simply apologized and said he would have them complete it immediately. When we walked over to look at the van together to make sure the filter was changed and it was. I then popped the hood and noticed they'd forgotten to replace the oil cap. I just looked at the technician and the mechanic was rushing the cap to us apologizing for the mistake. That was $161. The guys were extremely rude on too of making mistakes after mistakes. Needless to say I wont be back and dont recommend. They need to work on customer service and car service skills. Makes sense now why most locals don't recommend them. I wish I could give no stars..do not go to Midas in Middletown. They are absolute scammers and will try and charge you more for anything you take your vehicle in for. My daughters' car would not start and had it towed to Midas. I usually go to Johnnys Getty in Middletown but they were not available. They are honest and good people to work with unlike anyone at Midas. They told me I needed an alternator and battery which I expected. What I didn't expect was the $1,400 quote to change those out. I've had the exact same repairs done in the past and was charged around $750-800. I had it towed out of there and will never be going back, even for inspections. Do yourself a favor and literally go anywhere else to get your car fixed. It will cost you less!! read more

went in for a brake job, left with a break job and a clapping sound when I hit a bump. after return several times, i was told it's the ball joints. after the ball joint job, clapping sound still there. 13 years going to this place, sad to see the service, skill lever drop this low. They gave me an estimate of $1789 and as you know these places never come in below the estimate when it's time to pay the bill. Then I went down the street to Johnny's Getty in Middletown, RI, a local favorite I might add and got the job done for $1029. TL;DR: Midas lied to sell me a front brake job to get my truck inspected. They failed the inspection, but the RI Dept of Safety and Emissions overturned it, they will be investigating Midas. I have a Toyota Tacoma, 42,300 miles. I went for a state inspection. The vehicle was inspected by a worker name, Brad McManus. He reported that my brake pads were less than 1/32 of an inch and the rotors were scored and they wouldn't pass the inspection and wanted $550 to replace the pads and rotors. Knowing that Midas has a reputation of lying (I thought they might have changed their ways) I told them that I'd take care of the brakes. The worker that reported to me that my vehicle did not pass inspection said that if I didn't get the vehicle to pass inspection that they would put a yellow " REJECTED" sticker where the inspection sticker is. He then informed me that I would be taking a chance that I might get pulled over by a police officer. I told him I never heard of such a thing, but he assured me that that's what would happen. I went home pulled both front wheels and measured each pad and the rotors. They were well within the wear limits. Rotors were not scored at all and were 28 mm and the minimum wear thickness for this Toyota rotor is 26 mm. 3 of the brake pads were around 4 mm one was 2.60 mm which is a lot more than 1/32 of an inch that they said it was. I took pictures of all measurements went back and spoke with manager, Shawn Brant and showed him the pictures. He told me to call the State inspection division to have it re-inspected if I did not agree with their report. Follow up May 2 (next day) : I called the Rhode Island office of safety and emissions, and asked to schedule an inspection. I informed the inspector what happened, and how Midas/Inspector Brad McManus blatantly lied on the inspection report in an attempt, I feel, to extort money out of me. I then asked the inspector if he ever heard of such a thing about the yellow rejection sticker he said that that is absolutely not the case and he told me that all this information will be collected when I go to my appointment on Friday to file a formal complaint against the station/inspector/etc. A short time later, I received a phone call from Midas manager, Shawn Brant. I responded to Midas and asked him what he was calling for and he said that he spoke with his district manager and they were willing to offer me a free brake job and a free state inspection. Now I admit that's a very kind offer but really you have to look at it at why they were making this offer. Was it to silence my reviews that I told them that I was going to post? I told him that I didn't want the brake job because I in fact did not need the brake job and that I would continue my complaint with the state office of safety and emissions. This is not about the money/service that they were willing to offer me for free. This is about people being ripped off of their hard earned money when they don't need to be. Large car repair bills like these can CRIPPLE someone financially for weeks or even several months. Many people live paycheck to paycheck and need their cars for work and transportation so they feel obligated to have work done even when they're strong-armed into these high prices. THIS is the reason why I'm going to follow through with any complaint I can against this establishment and the inspector. Update: May 5 I drove to the state emissions inspection garage in Providence to get my front brakes measured to dispute what Midas and their inspector said on the official state inspection report. In the official Rhode Island inspection manual the minimum requirement for a brake pad is 1/32 of an inch, which is the exact thickness of a credit card. I will attach a photo of this section of the manual. They passed the inspection and told me they would call Midas, and I would have to go back there and get the inspection sticker. I drove to Midas and spoke with manager, Sean Brant, who said that they would need the keys to the vehicle to put it on the lift and reinspect certain requirements for the machine to generate a sticker. I believed that they could just print out the sticker and afix it to the vehicle , but I was incorrect. I told him I did not feel comfortable with them having my vehicle in their custody again because if they're willing to lie about my vehicles condition to get money out of me, I wouldn't put anything past them. At this point other workers came out from the garage, and an argument ensued between us. I determined at this point this situation with becoming adversarial in nature and so to prevent any further escalation, I thought it best just to leave and get the vehicle inspected somewhere else. A formal complaint was filed with the state against Midas and their inspector. They will be investigating. I had my vehicle inspected the next day at Monro service, which I will be providing an excellent review for. read more

We have been loyal customers for over ten years, but will no longer recommend Midas to others. We have so many positive things to say about the former management and staff, but, since the change in ownership, we have been highly unsatisfied with our experience at Midas. The customer service is brief and impersonal and there is little documentation provided after a visit. Twice, we have had to take our car back after it had been "fixed" because of problems with the repair. We paid hundreds of dollars for a repair and then, only 6 weeks later, were recommended hundreds of dollars of additional repairs. The new management of Midas does not inspire confidence and we'll be taking our business elsewhere. read more

I made an appointment online with them with a window of 2:30-4 to wait for an inspection and airbag light. They called me to confirm and even asked if I could come at 2. I left the keys and went elsewhere for a couple hours and came back because I had received no contact. I came back and saw the vehicle sitting in the same spot. Their explanation was that they had no one to diagnose the airbag and that they could have it looked at tomorrow morning but depending on what it needed it might not even be ready by then. The fact that I made an appointment, was asked to come in early, and then they didn't even touch the vehicle is absurd. What's even more absurd is that no one in the place is capable of plugging in a code reader and diagnosing an airbag. Really shows the skilled laborers they have there. I would not recommend making appointments here or coming here in general because they make false promises and clearly lack competent staff. read more

Brought car in to repair ac, picked it up drove home ac not working. They took it back in a second time, used dye no leaks, put refridgerant in and part, picked up car took home ac still not working. I had another mechanic just look at it and he said the fans aren't working, my problem with this situation is you had my vehicle in twice, charged me twice and never bothered to try the ac to see if it worked, before you gave me my car back twice? $600.00 later an no ac!!! This was my first inspection here. I chose them because of their limited repair service and therefore less chance of being sold unnecessary repairs. Shockingly, they still managed to fail it for front tire wear. They offered to replace them for $500+ and they good do it that day. I refused, drove to Town Fair, had them check them too. They measured them, in front of me, showed me the gauge, and told me they should have passed. Other than that, it was easy to get an appointment, they were polite and the office was clean. I would like to say that this experience with Midas auto was horrible! I went in to replace One Ignition coil and one spark plug. They replaced 2 coils and only one spark plug to the tune of 400 dollars. (Coil is 51 dollars/ spark plug 5 bucks) Not to mention they had the second coil off and didnt replace the second spark plug so will have to replace the coil again when I pull it off to replace the spark plug they should have when they had the coil off!!!!!! 400 dollars!!!!! straight RIP-OFF! They then said it would cost $650 to replace my coils and spark plugs... you kidding? I left and did it myself for $100. I've only been here for state inspections, twice. Both visits no problems and the staff was great, particularly Joe, that guy is really funny. They conducted a very thorough evaluation on the vehicle and gave me an easy to to understand breakdown of their recommendations. Joe took the time to explain everything to me. One of the recommendations was a new serpentine belt which I knew I needed anyway. Everything else on the list was routine or preventative maintenance and none of it was unreasonable. I was never pressured into letting them do the additional work. Truth is I have a regular shop I use, they just don't do inspections which is why I brought it to Midas. To be honest, Midas is a bit too pricey for me even by RI standards, so I really can't consider them for any serious repair work. However, they are honest and they care about their work and their customers. I do recommend them. read more
