What a surprise! I was driving by and noticed the cute cow on the sign and how old the restaurant was and had to try it. Everything was so good and such a good deal! The house specialty seems to be the beef dishes, so we got the beef fajitas and it was really really good! A huge pile of rare meat, nice cooked veggies and all the fixings. My grandma got stuffed peppers and loved it, they were massive too, enough for 4 dinners for her. I also got the jack Daniels chicken sandwich, which was really flavorful and big. The fries were so crispy and fresh too. Every entre was under 10$, almost too good a deal! The staff was super friendly and helpful too. I'll certainly be back. Been back. This place has apparently been around since 1947... the inside looks like it hasn't been updated since then, but don't let that stop you. I started off with the mozzarella sticks, which were good. My sister and I split the French dip and had to try the famous pot roast, which was a great value for under $10, including 2 sides. The gravy with it was so delicious and perfect for dipping fries in. Speaking of the fries, they had a nice crispy and light breading. The French dip was good - not overly soggy as some can be. What a spectacular dinning experience at the midway. Me and my boyfriend had never been and did NOT know what we were walking into. The first thing you see when you walk in is a monstrous bar. The place was packed with bar seating in the middle and booths and tables along the sides. We were seated promptly and given menus. I don't know how they keep prices so low but we were astonished. We both had French onion soup as an app, I had steak tips and my boyfriend chicken parm. The steak tips were cooked a perfect medium and his chicken was pounded thin with no gross stringy bits like other places. Everyone was so friendly and the food was great. read more

New to the area tonight was our first time getting food from the Midway. I had the fried scallops and my husband enjoyed the steak tips combo with scallops - both were absolutely delicious! I was specifically looking for a great pot roast. Read the reviews for the Pot Roast at Midway, and it seemed to be the real deal. Tricky thing with pot roast for me is I'm allergic to mushrooms, so I always have to double check that the restaurant's recipe is safe. Called to order at Midway and asked specifically if there were mushrooms in the pot roast. No, I was assured, no mushrooms in the pot roast. Great! Husband drove down from Chestnut Hill to pick up our order. He said the place was absolutely packed with maskless patrons, standing room only. Fine, we're not eating in house. Brings the food home. I excitedly transfer my mashed potatoes to a plate, pour out the pot roast and sit down to eat. The beef looks exquisite. Dig my fork in for the first bite and... Mushroom on my fork :( Lucky I saw it before I started eating. So I can't tell you how the food tastes. Can't really judge a place on its side salad. Better luck to other patrons with allergies that you get an accurate answer to your food safety questions. But if you've got more complicated dietary restrictions than me, best try elsewhere. read more

I want to start out by saying I very rarely give only 1 star when writing reviews, but this came very close. My wife and I were visiting family in town and they had been to Midway on multiple occasions, but had always just come in and sat at the bar and maybe had a snack or two, so we decided to check it out for dinner on their request. The bar was full, but it was clear that the staff recognized our cousins and offered us a table near the bar, which was fine because we are not picky. We ordered an app for the table to share, a southwestern egg roll, which was tasty, but simple. A couple of us got side salads, which were quite large, so I suppose a great value for the price. The entrees however, were a complete disaster. One prime rib, ordered rare, and asked for specifically only if rare was an option, and the rarest of the rare pieces if possible...it was served medium well at best. A fried oyster platter that by some strange magic, was approaching burned on the outside, yet almost still raw in the center...not only unappealing, but possibly dangerous. To round out the table turkey burger so overcooked and lacking flavor, you could barely chew or swallow a bite, and a special ravioli dish that arrived literally swimming in a pool of oil. Perhaps this was just an off night, but our cousins were beyond embarrassed that they recommended the Midway, and it may have been one of the worst meals we have had in a very long time. The only things that earned a second star were that the server was very nice and felt terrible, and they pour drinks that are probably well past the legally allowable pour size at a not so steep price. read more

Went there the night before halloween,Halloween, everyone was in a party mood. First, absolutely NO indication of COVID precautions, house was packed, not ONE mask in sight, including wait staff . It's obvious our waitress had been partying prior to her shift, and would have failed a sobriety test! Every table around us started off with bread and butter, which our waitress neglected to bring, and she was nowhere to be found. Started with one of their "specials," a house sangria, which which was bland, watered down and relatively tasteless. Began with the coconut shrimp, which proved to be outstanding, and the highpoint of the evening. Eight perfectly prepared shrimp, fried to perfection, accompanied by some sort of a red pepper jelly, delicious My partner order a NY Strip, medium. What came out was a non descript piece of meat, well done, and buried under accompaniments. No idea the cut of beef, but definitely not a strip steak. Wanted to return it, but again waitress went MIA I ordered a fried haddock sandwich, with fries. Fries were crisp, and Luke warm at best. Sandwich was the smallest piece of fish I've ever been served in a restaurant, buried under a pile of lettuce and bland tomato...honestly, Burger King's Big Fish has proven to be a far superior product. This place is a bar with a restaurant built around it. When I got there, a fella was trying to share a piece of his birthday cake with a couple sitting at the bar. I think that describes this place pretty well! =) We were seated at a table at the other end from the doorway - "Please Wait to be Seated" afterall! A pleasant waitress. We were each served a plate containing a single room temperature roll and two butters. The bathroom was clean enough, but a little small (the non-handicap stall especially). The cup of seafood chowder was just chock full of the good stuff swimming in a rather thin milky broth. For appetizers we had a nice plateful of sweet potato fries - not that crispy but yummy sweet, but that's sweet potato for you! Entrees came with a choice of two sides (potato, salad, cole slaw, rice, veggie). I requested the salad and french fries with my fried oysters. The salad was a large bowlful of iceberg, carrot shreds, onions, sliced previously frozen cucumber, a single cherry tomato and hot pepper. The portion was fine, but my lettuce was a little colored at the edges... my friend's salad looked fresh though. My friend's baked scallops was a baking dish full of rather large tender scallops coated with crumbs. My oysters were plump and the fries crispy. The only black mark of my entree was the dried piece of lemon served alongside it. Dessert was a yummy moist slice of chocolate cake garnished with whipped cream and rainbow sprinkles. The topping was so creamy, it made me think of chocolate pudding. A great end to a nice meal! read more

I came here last Thursday with two friends for their Music Bingo event and had an absolute blast! My waitress recommended the Pumpkin Martini which I have been craving since I left! The food is a great bang-for-your-buck. I got the Pulled Pork Potato Skin appetizer as a meal, and still took home leftovers. My friends got the steak salad and the Porterhouse Pork Chop, and both had no complaints. After years of driving past this rather anonymous looking restaurant on Providence Highway, we finally went in tonight for dinner. The ambiance as others have commented is a bit of a 70's throwback, but in a really nice way, at least for me as a 59 year old. The bar is very large and dominates the center of the restaurant, with booths and tables around the sides. That said, the bar gives one the feeling of a serious place where the bartender knows what they're doing. I had a cocktail, mixed by our server, Natalie, and it was among the most outstanding Manhattans I've had. Among three of us we had mussels, the Gorgonzola steak, shrimp fajitas, and a Cesar salad. Every thing was excellent. Natalie provided excellent, fast, and attentive service. Though the place comes across as humble and low key, everything here is definitely high end, and definitely far better than typical "bar food." We'll be back! read more

I got the teriyaki steak tips w/ pepper and onions. Cooked exactly as ordered. So flavorful. Not an overpowering teriyaki sauce so delicious. Fries were crisp and Cole slaw was nice. My daughter got the Jack Daniels turkey burger on a pretzel bun. She loved to. Said was one of the best turkey burger she has ever had. She lived the pretzel bun. My wife got baked stuffed shrimp. Recently went to the Midway Restaurant, and it was every bit as good as it was the first time. My friends and I arrived for lunch and were warmly welcomed by our favorite waitress, Peggy. We all had a Mai Tai, which was fantastic, and then picked our entrees from a rather extensive menu. I had the steak tips with a bourbon glaze... delicious. My only complaint (certainly not a major one) was that the sides were pretty limited, and the corn that I had was frozen and bland. This is an old school restaurant with a wide selection of great food, and a staff that pays attention to their guests. This is quickly becoming one of my favorite restaurants! read more

Dropped into the Midway today for lunch after seeing it featured on Phantom Gourmet - and we were not disappointed! I had a turkey club and my boyfriend had bourbon steak tips. My turkey club was massive, piled high with bacon and crunchy lettuce. I ate half, and had enough left for a full other meal. It's a great deal at $10! I got fries as a side, which came out hot and super crunchy. My boyfriend reports that the steak tips were delicious and perfectly cooked. The best part of the meal was the Mai Tai I got alongside - $11 and HUGE. Service was excellent, everyone was friendly, all around great experience. We will be back! read more

Food was great! It has a nice, home-cooked feel to it. Large portions and very reasonably priced ($10 steak- can't beat that!). The waitress was very helpful when I told her about my lactose allergy and actually brought me a few different lactose-free gravies with my meal. The dessert special was the bomb (Oreo brownie skillet, big enough for two people), and the bottled sodas is a nice touch. The atmosphere was nice as well: there was a great musician playing, and he wasn't too loud so I could still talk to the people in my party. A+ for customer service, A+ for food. After work I walked over to the Midway after hearing how my coworkers raved about the food. I walked in, wasn't acknowledged by the two bartenders or the bar back. I sat down and was completely ignored. Took notice of how the people that came in behind me were heartily greeted. Stopped by here tonight for some dinner and drinks with my husband. Was greeted by the owners wife (I belive ) and got seated right away. The huge bar was packed, and the crowd was a bit older. We didn't mind that at all. We could still hear each other and have some good conversations. We ordered a seasonal beer and a white sangria before ordering our food. The beer and sangria came out quick and cold. I ordered a cup of corn chowder and the beef brisket (new to the menu) and my husband got the meatloaf. The portions here are HUGE and everything is amazing comfort food. We left here full of delicious food, some good drinks, and feeling very welcomed. We will definitely be back! read more

I really am surprised with the good food great improvement in service and food quality. I,recommend the NY Steak.in addition they have made some improvements to the place. I ate here yesterday. Food and service was decent (steak tips, fries, calamari). Great fries! Reason for the 1 star? I had my credit card stolen by an employee there. I left my card behind and was able to call back immediately and the host assured me he found the card and would hold it in the kitchen with me. Since I left, I told him I would be back in the evening. When I returned, my card had a 3000 charge and was missing. The manager appeared nonchalant and said it was in the kitchen and his people wouldn't take it. Well, that means visitors are just randomly walking through the kitchen which is major health violation. The manager was dismissive and found nothing wrong with leaving a card in an open space. Really disturbed by my experience here. Not one to leave comments, I thought it was important to share the lack of professionalism and character of people working here. read more

This review is all about the " "s. The midway is a "classic", "old-school", "Boston" "restaurant". Situated in the heart of Dedham, shadowed by the Dedham mall. A dark, cozy place, you feel like this is where the patron's of the fictional Boston bar, Cheers, would really dine if they werent stuck inside of a tv; largely due to the big rectangle shaped bar in the middle of the restaurant with it's awesome orange vinyl, high backed swivel chairs. It's cramped in the Midway, with about 24 tables jammed around the big, dominating bar. This is kinda a no frills place, a little step up from a diner basically. They have a traditional "new england" menu, featuring a lot of "fresh" seafood, also a ton of meat! London broil, prime rib, skirt stake, you name it... All prepared very traditionally with baked potato and veg. Normally i love places like the midway. They have so much history and charm - such great neighborhood feel, why only three stars you say? Second time i ate here, me and my friend just didnt feel "right". I just had a BLT (also the waiter gave me so much shit cause i wanted my blt on a bulkie roll and not white toast. What? I like bulkie rolls ok? and the customer is always right!) with coleslaw as the side. My friend had baked scallops with the same aforementioned coleslaw. We both think the slaw made us sick. The food isnt the greatest in the world. It's certainly not healthy. Lots of meat, lots of starch, everything drenched in butter and gravy but what else would you expect? I sort of like that they havent tried to update their menu in this low carb crazy world. I really like that the starter salads that come with an entree are freaking huge!! bigger than your head. and as noted in other reviews, free bread rolls, that kicks ass. Pros: Awesome, kitchy and authentic ambiance with "real salt of the earth" sorta boston types (mostly over 60 years of age). Good prices for the amount of food you get, also some nice cuts of meat and normally out of my price range types of seafood. Pretty good service (not the best in the world), I'd avoid the midway for lunch -nothing too spectacular on the menu and what seemed like only one waitperson who was certainly kept on his toes. Cons: Kinda dismal when you come in on a bright sunny day (like we did) to a, well let's face it, "dank pit". It took an hour for my eyes to adjust. I think I got food poisoning, and Gordan Ramsay would most likely have a field day spotting all the health code violations in the kitchen. read more

This is seriously the worst restaurant in the Boston area I have ever been to. We ordered three things: a turkey sandwich, the thanksgiving-ish turkey sandwich and a seafood pasta entree. The turkey sandwich had weird grey horrible turkey meat. They said it was "fresh oven roasted" but it wasn't a turkey breast roasted it was processed turkey meat & water with no "roast" flavor at all. Boiled might be too kind to refer to the flavor. It seemed old as well. The seafood entree was over cooked had a bland sweet sauce and the sides were awful. The thanksgiving turkey sandwich (with "dressing", cranberry sauce, and mashed potatoes) was the worst sandwich I have ever had in my life. I seriously still tell horror stories about this thing. I already discussed how awful the meat was. The cranberry sauce was obviously from a can and low quality at that (Seriously cranberry sauce homemade is this simple: cranberries, sugar, little water or OJ, dash of cinnamon, boiled down to a thick sauce--- surely a restaurant can do that. My 7 year old neice made the cranberry sauce for thanksgiving this last year, so if I'm paying to eat at a restaurant I want them to be able and willing to cook dishes from scratch that are at least that simple!!!!!) The mashed potatoes had little flavor, very starchy and firm. Needed everything, butter, cream, salt and pepper added to it to be even remotely decent. And last but not least the stuffing. This stuffing first of all had SAUSAGE in it. Gross. But the worst thing is that there was no mention of that on the menu, and the waitress didn't mention it. None of us were ordering any red meat or pork, so to just put sausage in a turkey sandwich without saying so seems really risky for those who want to eat kosher or have other dietary preferences (me). So the sausage was awful and rude... but the worst thing? It was also raw in the middle of the pieces! The stuffing outside of that was way too wet and squishy and the bread of the sandwich tasted stale and dreadful. The waitress was polite enough but unresponsive and unsympathetic when we said we weren't fond of the quality of the food (very politely, of course no need to be rude EVER to the waitstaff for a management or kitchen related issue which they have zero control over!!!). So we left, all of us with most of our food still on our plates, hungry and cooked something at home. I would never recommend this place to anyone. Some other cons are: really crowded. somewhat "rough" around the edges patrons. read more

It isn't Gourmet dining, but it is better than the cookie cutter, microwave prepared food you would get at any of the chain places located all along RT 1 in Dedham. Support places like this.
