This place is really just a large bar with some tables squeezed in off to the sides (so tight that your chair isn't too far from knocking into someone else's table) and a menu to boot. Most of the patrons are in their 40s and above, it seems like everyone knows each other, there are a lot of regulars for sure. The Midway is like the place where the elderly folk come to pregame before heading over to the Oasis for karaoke. The restaurant doesn't feel clean, the tables can be sticky. The food isn't something that you'd want to taste twice; my steak was only 75% chewable, the rest were tendons. I found the prices to be on the cheaper side, but at the expense of quality. Monday night and not so busy night but the server was so overwhelmed and slow.... took over 20 min to bring our drink order. and didn't come back to take our food order and another server ended up took our food order. when we asked our check, she never comeback until we went up and found out she was chatting with her co-workers. it was totally not great service. read more

We went here for the first time, due to all of the good things we had heard. Yes, the decor seems to not have changed since the 60's or 70's and it's a little cramped, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. The food was pretty good: fried clams for me, buffalo tenders for DD, DH got the Jack Daniels chicken sandwich. The deterrent was the service. We watched plenty of people come in and be greeted and chatted with - most appeared to be regulars. That's fine, nothing wrong with having a "usual spot". Our server was nice enough, but she seemed really distracted. She brought us our drinks, then disappeared for a while. Came back, took our orders (I ordered a side garden salad as one of my sides), then disappeared again. After a while she brought us our dinners, and realized she had never brought me my salad. Went off, supposedly to get it - didn't return with it. It wasn't until we were all just about done with our dinners that she came back, saw we needed refills and went off again for those and for my salad before I could tell her to forget about it (I mean, it's a side salad, no biggie). What she came back with was a bowl of near-colorless lettuce, some croutons, two raw onion slices and one cherry tomato. I wasn't expecting something spectacular - but she should have just not bothered. And it was really the lack of attention that was the issue... we don't need you hovering over us (I hate that, actually)... but it was like we were an after-thought. Not the best first impression. The reviews are right. Get the pot roast. It won't disappoint. Fries have a light breading, and have a nice crisp outside. Mozzarella sticks were also yummy. French dip was delicious. Vegetable of the Day was butternut squash (mashed) - great. The servers were very nice and attentive. The atmosphere is dark and dive-y. Went to this place today! Our waitress had no clue what she was doing. She didn't mention her name in beginning. As others have said, this is the cheers of Dedham. I love coming here for the food and people. They have a cozy atmosphere and good comfort food. The people here are regulars but not snobby. If your a first timer you will feel welcome and like you belong here. The staff is friendly and hard working. No slacking off here. They have a lot of customers and don't have time to goof off. As for the food, all I can say is if you like tasty comfort food this is the place. They have a regular menu and a specials menu. Between they two you are sure to find something you like. Fox "News" is always on, and you can always join a conversation with one of the barfly q-tips who love to extol the apparent virtues of Sarah Palin. The bartenders are attentive and friendly, and they will pour you a full glass of their mediocre wine, a frosty mug of beer, or a good, strong mixed drink. Nothing fancy, but nothing to complain about in this department. The food, on the other hand, is all over the map. Reliable selections are the buffalo wings (dry-rubbed and superb), french fries, soups (homemade), burgers, chicken brocolli ziti (though the pasta is always overcooked), steak tips (decent, but not mind-blowing), and when they have them, prime rib and grilled swordfish. The garden salad is big but uninspired. The mashed potatoes are from a box. I come here a lot because it is close to my home and the food is great. On the inside this place looks like it came out of the 1970's, nothing to write home about but if you like the old school atmosphere this place is for you. I'm proud to be regular customer and enjoy the experience of camaraderie for certain. However, what brings me back several times throughout the week is my appreciation of the Midway's pedigree. The family has maintained the American diner culture of the 30's, 40's and 50's, serving very good meals, generous portions at reasonable prices. The comfort food is exceptional and I reference the meatloaf ,pot roast, rump steak, and puddings as just an example of why the Midway has it's own special appeal.. My kids and I really enjoy the Midway, we always get Chicken Fingers and Burgers, with thick cheese sauce on the side to dip everything in. Sometimes if I go for lunch with a friend (sans children) then we'll have some fun playing Keno during our time there (it's like Megabucks every 10 minutes!) The prices are really reasonable too, which is one reason I've always found that if you find a restaurant that is popular with the older crowd, it usually has good food cheap! The waitstaff is nice, I've never had any problems to complain about. In fact, I would highly recommend their custom bottled Raspberry Lime Rickeys! The only caveat is that because it is mainly a bar, it is not the most child friendly atmosphere, but if your kids are older and you're not offended by the bar, it's fine. read more

If I could give zero stars, I would. This place is disgusting on many levels. Ordered the midway platter appetizer (mozzarella sticks, jalapeño poppers, "buffalo" wings, nacho chips/salsa) & as soon as it arrived I knew this wasn't going to be a good meal. Everything was overcooked, nacho chips were stale, mozzarella sticks weren't even warm. No dipping sauces were given either, even after asking twice. I ordered the steak tips with mashies. My friend ordered the fried chicken dinner with fries. Good thing she ordered fries because the mashed potatoes were FAKE! That's right folks, they serve instant potatoes. You know, flakes from a box. Disgusting! The 7 tiny steak tips were served on a fajita pan w/peppers & onions (weird). Clearly, it was 3 average sized tips cut up into small pieces. Tasted & looked like something I wouldn't give to my dog. Took a bite & was finished with my meal. Think it was either bad meat or stew meat, definitely not good quality.The fried chicken had a nice crunch on it, but it was all bones & batter with hardly any meat. Best thing about the meal was the salad & that's saying a lot. Our waitress was friendly enough, not her fault the food is revolting. The place is definitely a dive & stuck in a time warp, but was crowded (it was trivia night). We think maybe they purposely serve awful food to non-regulars. That's the only explanation we could come up with to explain the crowd. Friends local to the area swear by the pizza & sitting at the bar for drinks & political conversation with the blue hairs. I went to the Midway for the first time a few weeks ago and was surprised to find that behind that nearly windowless exterior (and the large cow) there's a lot going on. On a Friday night the place is jammed by 6 o'clock. The vibe is friendly, noisy, happy. The food, I was less enthusiastic about but perhaps we ordered too adventurously. The Baked Stuffed Shrimp was basically shrimp covered with a lot of bread crumbs with melted butter on the side. Forget veggies - what they have is an afterthought and bad. The cole slaw was not awful but didn't look very appetizing (looks matter). My husband said that his prime rib was good but I have my doubts - it looked used. I think that he just loved the giant scotches they were pouring. The bartender was friendly and super-efficient. I'll go back. I'll try the burger. read more

There are a lot of restaurants/bars that try to play off the "dive bar" atmosphere. Midway Restaurant is just plain divey. This is not a bad thing if you're not looking for a fine dining establishment, which my friends and I were not. We were looking for some good trivia so we headed into Dedham. There were five people in our party total and it was not easy to seat us. The entire restaurant is one narrow but long rectangle with a huge bar smack-dab in the middle. There are many tables lining the walls, but space is left to be desired between them and the seats at the bar. Because we had 1 extra person (each table seats 4 aside from a couple of corner booths which were already occupied), we were stuck in the farthest corner near the kitchen so that we did not obstruct the walking aisle more than we needed to. However, this also meant that we were the farthest away from the trivia emcee leaving us at a disadvantage. After two questions, the staff realized this and turned on a speaker over our heads which made our lives much easier. Our waitress was phenomenal. She was charismatic, personable, funny, and just a pleasure to have around. The food was halfway decent too and at a great price! This place could use some serious remodeling to accommodate such an event as trivia where groups are going to come to play. I'm from the Midwest, so any place here in New England that reminds me of the comfort, hospitality, and authenticity that my home region provides, I'm on board. The Midway is the perfect blend of all those things. My husband and I live down the street but it has taken us about two years to try the Midway but we are so happy we finally did. The atmosphere is comfy and old fashioned in the best way, the clientele and servers are the salt of the earth, and the food is cheap and delicious. The manager even came over to our table right away to welcome us, a very nice gesture. We are looking forward to sitting at the bar for our next visit. We will be back again and again. read more

Midway is a very interesting restaurant. The food is cheap, the drinks are strong, and the clientele are very friendly/animated. The customers definitely trend a little bit older, but that really speaks to how long Midway has been popular in the area more than anything else. Overall, definitely worth checking out, as long as you're not married to the idea of going to a popular spot full of 20-somethings. Out of everything I've tried there, the Pot Roast definitely stands out. As for the drinks, they're delicious and very generous but you may want to plan on a DD or an Uber. ok, so this place is NOT a fine dining establishment...the stuffing does have sausage in it, the cheeseburgers have cheese spread on them and sometimes the pizzas are overcooked but the beer is always cold, the service is the nicest to be found in Dedham and the wingdings are definately worth ordering again! Love this place. Let me start out by saying I have been coming here for 20 years with my grandparents - my grandmother is now 85! It is that type of place. The food is hit or miss...one day it is great...the next day not so much. Never terrible though. I also have been bringing my daughter and she loves it...I can can actually afford to get her the lobster here when they have it on special. Prime rib is always good. We go to the Midway every few months , great burger and other menu items not fancy , we sit at the bar . Today stopped in for a bite nice young man waited on us right away my husband had a beer and I ordered a glass of chablis ..while not expecting the best wine it was down right nasty from a sip we both agreed to send it back. Our waiter was fine with it when I explained it had a very bad taste and replaced it with chardonnay for me and that was fine, our food came out and that was equally as good. However there was a woman working the other end of the bar that appeared to have a comment about my sending the wine back to our waiter Then as we are sitting two seats away from another couple we overhear her putting the other guy down to the patrons she was waiting on . As far as we are concerned this young man far exceeded anything this woman had to offer, as far as service her attitude was totally inappropriate . My husband and I decided to give the Midway a whirl as it's about halfway between our house and our daughter's house- a good choice on a ride home one evening. It was a bit crowded (obviously a good thing!) and we got two seats at the bar. (Great bar stools, BTW- I'm only 5'5" and they don't leave your legs hanging like most places). The menu was extensive- and I mean unbelievable. And then the special board had even MORE. We both had great meals (and I took about half mine home, simply because it was so much food)- I had a brocoli chicken ziti dish. My husband had a steak, which he finished in one sitting because it was so darn good. BTW- as far as the staff goes- the barkeep was a great friendly lady- and when we went back a second time (about a month later) she remembered our names.
