Thanks for the great reviews, Yelpers! I probably would not have brought my car over here. After 15 years, my (dad's) 1996 993 needed a handbrake adjustment. The place was a little hard to find with the construction in the way. Tom, Jonathan, and the staff are great. They were professional, to the point, and made me feel at ease and valued as a customer (see my review about Loeber Motors). They explained exactly what they were going to do and didn't try to hustle me. They may not be the fastest repair turnaround, but the handbrake is finally working, and I may have set a record by paying only $65 for the job. It's very hard to be mad about time, especially if they get the job done right the first time...unlike Loeber Motors, where climate control panels mysteriously disappear. Yeah, that happened today. When it comes to automotive repair, I'm typically not a fan of second chances. For the reasons outlined in my previous review, I certainly had no intentions of returning to MPC. However, a few days after I posted my first review, I received a phone call from the owner, Tom. To my surprise, Tom was disappointed that I had such a bad experience at his shop and wanted to rectify the situation. He mentioned that the success of his business is based on its reputation and of course satisfied customers help build that reputation. I've always been a fan of supporting small business owners, in particular, business owners who reside in the same neighborhood for which I live. For Tom to reach out to me directly really helped change my view of his shop and of second chances. Tom assured me that if I gave his shop a second chance, he personally would make sure that my car was repaired satisfactory. Time was of the essence since I was preparing for a road trip a few days prior to his call. Since it was imperative that I had my car to get to work, Tom volunteered to transport me to my job in Hyde Park so that he would have enough time to work on it before my trip. To make a long story short, I've just returned from my road trip and was thrilled that I was able to raise and lower my hardtop without any issues! The antenna was also replaced, my brakes don't squeak as much and to top it off, a sticker letting me know when my next oil change is needed, was placed on my windshield. Please note that I would have easily offered five stars based on my second visit, but I felt the service I received the second time should have been extended the first time. Mechanics, or any business owner, should treat each customer as a valued customer if they want to keep them as customers. When I do find a business that offers great service, I am faithful to the end. I'm happy to say that I look forward to having my car serviced at MPC in the future. read more

QUICK UPDATE: No one has even called to discuss with me on this. They just responded to this message. Their response is not valid. There were multiple items that were not documented - I needed to get upset and tell Ryan to contact State Farm - as he never told me nor State Farm of the "additional charges" prior to making changes. *** I do not recommend this place at all. You will see I do not have 1 negative review on yelp - only 5 star reviews. This is my first. I was completely mistreated and felt I was lied to about my Audi repairs. 4 months ago they removed leaves and unclogged my engine draining system - as water was coming into my vehicle from rain ($800). In my 10+ years of owning this car, parking on the streets, I have never had to have this done. But I get it - this may happen from time to time. 4 months later I brought my car in for engine light check and oil change. In my estimate 1. a critter was living inside my vehicle, bite through a wire 2. I need an antibacterial wash 3. my cowl has a ton of leaves and needed to be cleaned again (4 months later???) I went through State Farm for the critter repair and told them not to touch the leaves as in 10 years of owning this car I have never had to clean this and now twice in 4 months? So after going through State Farm and just picked up my vehicle 1. the antibacterial wash was not included or recommended any longer. 2. they decided to add on a replacement of a part that was not authorized by State Farm or myself. I was extremely upset. When I asked why they didn't contact State Farm with the new piece that needed replacement - Ryan told me that he didn't realize he needed to. So, now we are trying to get payment from State Farm - which I probably won't get because it should have been shown initially. I feel they lied about replacing it. 3. I asked him to show me the leaves that would cost me $100 to remove - it was 15 leaves on top of the engine (the cowl) that they could have brushed off - there was nothing inside. So, they lied to me about this. I took a photo and showed my mechanic friend out of state. 4. They promised to call on 2 separate occasions and let me know times it would be completed - both times Ryan never called. When I called to follow up and let the manager know, he started getting defensive and wouldn't me talk. He did finally apologize for Ryan not following up with me. I was told Ryan would call to apologize. He did - but told me he didn't realize they didn't have the part. How do you not know you don't have the part and promise it would be completed at a certain time and not call your customer to let them know??? I would never recommend this place - I was disrespected as a customer, lied to a few times, and charged for unauthorized repairs. I'm extremely disappointed in this. They did nothing when I complained - except over charge me. Please do not go here. read more

So far so good...I brought my 911 here because they serviced it with the previous owner. They were very knowedgable about the car and were able to tell me some of the history on it. I had a brake job completed that was pretty pricey, but that's to be expected on a Porsche. The turnaround time was quick. Okay, I wrote about the people who take care of my primary vehicle (my bike) but even though it primarily lives in the garage, I cannot in good conscience leave out the team who cars for my car. I come from a long line of car people and the only reason I never drive them is because I deliberately live in downtown Chicago and SF so I don't have to. But that doesn't mean I don't love my ride and care for it deeply. So enough about me and my reasons ---- MPC is the only place that I let touch my baby. She's worth way too much and there's no point in letting people who don't know enough practice on her. MPC knows their shit. They focus on performance cars and are generally great to talk to if you love cars like I do. They travel and race themselves so are pretty well wired into the racing/performance world. Was looking for a mechanic that specializes in Volkswagon parts and that is centrally located to downtown. Found Midwest Performance Cars in West Loop. Brought my car in for check engine light on Friday afternoon at 2 PM. Lee called me back at 2:45 PM that same day with the car diagnosis. Now, I know a tiny bit about car mechanics and as an intelligent woman, I appreciate a respectful explanation of relevant repairs. This is exactly what I got from Lee at Midwest. He told me that the repair could wait, the car was drivable etc. Thank you. I went ahead with the minor repair anyway and some other routine maintenance. Lee called me the next morning, Sat and told me I could pick my car up at 12 PM. When I picked up my car they had given me one of the car parts at no cost (an approx $150 value). Maybe I'm a sucker and it was too good to be true (here I was thinking that I was special) but as it turns out, I went back to read some Yelp reviews and apparently Midwest does this sort of thing all the time for it's customers. Little freebies here and there for the sake of customer appreciation? Fine by me. Thanks Lee and Midwest. I'll be calling you if there's a next time. Quality, fair & honest, fast, respectful, friendly service. A rarity in this industry. First off - I will try to be as constructive as possible. Let me also say that I am very knowledgeable about cars - especially mine. I used to do all of my own work until I moved to Chicago and no longer have a garage. Also, a couple of the reviews stated how MPC saved them significant money over the dealer. This is no surprise, but the prices they paid were still too high given the information provided. I've taken my BMW to Midwest Performance twice: First Time was to replace a the slave cylinder on a manual transmission which is held on by only two nuts. A trained mechanic should be able to replace this within an hour. It took a week to get my car back. I also had to bring the car back again since they had not properly secured the line to the cylinder causing it to bump against the steering column. Cost: Roughly $250 (after a discount for paying cash). This is probably $50-70 high consider how much they charge for labor per hour and the parts. Second Time: I needed a small belt replaced and an oil change. A trained mechanic should be able to do both in 30-60 minutes. Cost: $140. This is reasonable considering the oil for my car is expensive and only available through BMW. I supplied the belt and oil filter. More importantly, on this second trip I came in to investigate a horrible thudding noise coming from the drive train. I explained to them the "symptoms" in detail. After 3 days they reported that they had (finally)changed the belt/oil, but were not able to locate they noise despite having the tech and the porter take the car for several test drives. (NOTE: The porter is the kid that washes your car... he is not qualified to test drive or diagnose problems.) I immediately came in to go on a test drive with the tech, at which time the noise was so noticeable you could actually FEEL something thumping against the bottom of the car. I'm told that I will get a call the next day. No call. After a week, I go in for a visit again. I'm told that they can't identify the problem, YET the car is okay to drive, and that I should just bring it back in if the noise gets worse or different! The sound really couldn't get much worse. I take the car, and drive it gingerly home. The next weekend I go to a small paved lot to jack up the car just to do a visual inspection for myself. I find that the transmission brace is broken in half. It would not take someone with any knowledge of cars to recognize that a piece of metal broken in half is a bad thing. This is something that would be GLARINGLY obvious if the car was jacked up or lifted. I will not speculate as to why they were unable to detect this problem despite being told they had repeatedly inspected the car, nor can I fathom why they thought the car was safe to drive with that horrendous banging. Pricing: Decent, but I would negotiate for a better deal Quality of Work: Poor Timing: Poor Attitude: Nice, but they never called me when they said they would. I always had to call them. Overall: I will not use them in the future, nor would I recommend them. read more

Really wanted to like this place as i didn't want to spend dealer money on my Audi that was out of warranty. Here is what tainted my experience: 1. Was once told the car needed new brakes. I wasn't sure since they were working fine. Went back another time and was told the brakes were fine - that shot up my radar. Asked about the different recs and was told the first mechanic "overcalls brakes " and is no longer with the company. Told Jonathan that i needed a final opinion from him, hoping the 2nd guy was correct, but he came back and said, in fact the brakes need to be changed. Really never was comfortable with their competence after this 2. Needed 20 inch tires for another car. Spoke to Tom? explaining that i was ordering 20 inch tires. He said just have them shipped there and they could install them. I ordered tires, and called the next day to tell them when they would be arriving. Jonathan said they are not equipped to install 20 inch tires. I had to jump thru some hoops to cancel the tire order without a processing charge. Needless to say, i will not be going back or recommend this place. read more

Took very long, way too long for a basic battery check/replacement (two days). Also seemed to be pushing for all sorts of unnecessary checks and possible parts replacements. Cannot say I trust the mechanic who saw to my car. Said battery was smoking and spewing acid all over the place and would have to clean that up. The battery was actually less than one year old and installed by a local dealership where most of my work is done. I thought this claim was nonsense, so I just showed up unannounced, and guess what? No spewing, no mess to clean up. Just a scare tactic I suppose. I really wanted to like MW Performance based on the reviews but no such luck. Personally would not go back. read more

I live close to MPC and was delighted to see they specialize in German cars. My car was consuming oil and throwing bluish fumes from the exhaust so I decided to drop my car off for them to take a look. Long story short they kept my car for around a week, were not able to diagnose the problem and kept telling me to "take it on a long drive from here to St. Louis and that might fix the bluish exhaust fumes issue"...here's the cherry on the top; they charged me one hour labor even though they DID NOT perform ANY work whatsoever on the car. Basically they charged me $100+ for writing a quote for what they "thought" the problem might be. They were not letting me take my car unless I paid for one hour of labor. Don't know what kind of business practice these guys run but I'm definitely never going back here Edit: in summary they were unable to address or diagnose any of the issues except to tell me to change my rotors (which wasn't an issue to begin with it was just something I wanted them to take a look at). Either way your customers would at least expect you to be upfront about charging labor for essentially a quote while not performing any work on the car. Driving it around the block a few times doesn't constitute an hour of labor, but I guess that's the only work you really did. read more

The crew here is thorough, well informed, always accurate and willing to provide all the necessary details to allow a customer to make an informed decision. They are fair, prompt and efficient. These guys seem nice enough but they forget the details and were unable to deliver. I brought a wheel in to get trued but the next day they said they tried but couldn't get it done perfectly. If you can't get the job done should I be paying? Then they forgot to put my lug-nut caps back on. The 100 dollar new customer coupon was nice though. read more

Bruce is great! I took my car in to have the tail light replaced. He not only took care of the tail light, but the left blinker and the depleated tires as well. No waiting, no worries. Based on the previous info here I decedied to give MWPC a try after being in the exact situation the previous reviwer had. Having purchased my Certified Pre Owned BMW from Perillo's I had been enjoying free, albeit crappy, service from their insane service dept. Still, it was factory and it was free. Fast forward to just out of the extended warranty period. The air bag light pops on. I look at the steering wheel and go "oh my airbag what is wrong with you?" then I started looking around and realized that my car has no short of 6 airbags.... Probably should get this one figured out... Take it to the dealer. I get a qoute of $4700 the fix a wide array of issues. I'm told my engine is leaking oil and misfiring, brakes need to be replaced and that my air bag computer is bad. Considering this is 25% of the purchase price I was a bit curious about it. That and the car had been driving great, had not been seeing any oil under, etc, etc. I had Perillo deal with the Air Bag issue and took the car over to Lee at MWPC. He took the car from me and called me the next day to say this: Your car reported a single misfire event, which is probably due to hitting a big bump ad unseating the coil for the cylinder for a breif moment. Save $650. Engine Manifold is leaking so little oil that its really not a issue. Save: $750 We did brakes and found out there was a wheel bearing issue. Total cost with better than OEM parts, great attitude and easy come easy go timing: $1600. Amazing! read more

i waited a while to write this review... it took a month for my driveshaft to be replaced. the work done was $500 more than originally qouted. that being said the work was done correctly (i hope!). Lee was a nice enough guy and the place itself is pretty cool, but i will never go back. i was supposed to get a report on other minor work that needed to be done and didn't. i was told it would emailed to me that week.... i am still waiting for the report a month later and all my calls have not been returned. thanks for nothing. i am going back to VFC engineeringfor all future work on the BMW. read more

Bar none the most honest and competent car repair in the city. I tell them the problem, leave my Benz, and come back to pay the bill. Easy. The prices are reasonable and half the cost of a dealer. The work is excellent as I have never had to go back for something once they fix it. The manager, Lee, listens well and gets things done right. The mechanics, especially Emil, are more than competent; they are artists with a foreign car. A dealer wanted $2,000 for a repair that MPC fixed for $200. Yes, I said $200. They saw the problem was a simple fix and I did not charge me for what I did not need. That kind of honesty lets me relax. I know when they say a repair is essential I have no worry that it is true. A Benz is expensive to maintain, but it is less of a hassle and way cheaper having the work done here. They also fix all four of my motorcycles with absolute precision. read more

Cannot speak highly enough of these guys. Long story short, I took a Porsche 911 in for a pre-purchase inspection. Jonathan (I believe the owner) spent 30 minutes on the phone with me just talking through what he would look for and the process they go through when inspecting a car before I'd even agreed to use them. The thoroughness of the discussion and obvious level of knowledge closed the deal for me. Fast forward a few days, I have the car dropped off with them for what I think will be a 2 - 2.5 hour inspection. Within 40 minutes, I get a call from Jonathan letting me know that the engine has a serious knock and based on their experience will likely require a rebuild or replacement in the near future ($10k cost). He called to see whether I wanted to continue the inspection, or stop there. I obviously chose to stop. By doing this MPC cost themselves money. The easiest thing to do would have been to continue the inspection for the full 2 hours and charge me for all their time, but they voluntarily chose to call me, report a serious problem, and volunteer to stop the inspection. I'm not sure how many other garages would do this, but the fact they prevented me from making a $10k mistake, as well as were absolutely honest and upfront in terms of not continuing an inspection on a bad car just so they could make some extra money is incredibly impressive. It goes without saying that if you're looking for an honest, knowledgeable and fair garage for your car, it's worth the time making a call to call Jonathan at MPC. Absolutely 5 stars! read more

I have been to MPCI several times, for both routine items like oil changes but also for (latest was a battery issue) with my 02 Porsche convertible. I can't say enough about the ease of dealing with these guys. They're nice, they're responsive (someone answers the phone!), and their labor rates are reasonable. They also had no problem working with my warranty insurance company. Much easier than driving to the suburbs and dealing with sky high dealer labor rates and wondering if you're getting screwed by the upsell. I highly recommend Tom and his crew. read more

Im here in Chicago visiting while I move to Fort Lewis, Washington. I needed a shop to go to have my BMW X5 serviced and checked out before I made the long trip. Since Chicago has everything I researched many shops to include Perrilio. I finally chose Midwestern Performance for it's reviews and recommendations from friends that live here. I called the the shop to make the appointment and told them what I wanted. They were very professional and courteous and valued me as a customer. When I arrived for the appointment I walked in the front and saw many high end cars and thought this is going to be very expensive. Jonathan the service manager was really nice and welcomed me into the shop. Well spoken and new what he was talking about. They took a look at my vehicle and then actually walked me to the car and explained all the things that needed to be fixed. I was really surprised at the detail, knowledge, and honesty this shop had. They were not pushy nor tried to feed me some BS when they explained what needs to be fixed and what can be fixed in the future. Very impressesd... As I did the estimate with Jonathan I was dreading the final outcome of the price. To my excitement I paid far less than what I expected and the price met my budget. It don't look like much when you arrive due to the construction and location but you will get good service. As a active duty service member for 12 years in the US Army I never had better service at a shop. I will recommend this shop to other service members if they ever come here to Chicago. read more

I have been a customer for about 2 years. MPC has been a valuable partner that helps me not only maintain my car but make the best decisions about set up and consumables (brakes, tires, etc.). If you take your car to the track, this council is invaluable. Their team has extensive experience with sports cars - particularly with clients that track them. They have been able to take care of my car on short notice with fast turnarounds. I like being able to communicate with them by email and they are excellent at providing updates and work estimates by email. If you have luxury or sports car and live in the downtown Chicago area they are your best auto maintenance option. read more

I brought in my 73 Volvo - a classic car that many mechanics are hesitant to work on (because with that kind of age things rust, and rust is very difficult to work with :: you can break things just by touching them). This is the first place I took my car to since buying it, so I needed a full inspection. Midwest Performance Cars did an AMAZING job with giving the car a FULL inspection. The car came back with a great bill of health - (it runs amazingly). And Jon at MPC provided a detailed project plan for little things to get fixed. They went way above and beyond the call of duty. The labor rate is expensive, but if you want the best of the best to work on your vehicle in an honest and upfront manner, these are the guys. For what it's worth: I made the decision to go here by just calling around places in my neighborhood - these guys were open the earliest (a very good sign of hard workers) and answered their phone promptly on a Monday morning at 7-8 am. I was out of town and had to leave the car there for longer than expected, MPC had no problem with that and didnt charge me a storage fee. The car currently drives like NEW. I cannot believe how nice the ride is, it is unbelievable. I plan to keep MPC as my sole service provider on this car. read more

Solid work on my 2003 986-S that needed some TLC (entire clutch&flywheel project/breaks redone) . I felt Tom did a good job of walking me through the primary issues and then addressing some of the secondary areas of concern that would need work done later. Very friendly, helpful, professional, and fair - my bill wasn't cheap, but a few small things were included for free (i.e bulb changes/oil change) as a value add and nice gesture. Oh, also, almost forgot - Tom called up his buddy Jim at Simon's Carwash, and they gave me a nice wash (retail $30ish) on the house that night on my way home from the shop. Four stars and not five because: As mentioned, I had my breaks totally re-done, and have substantial squeak on a rolling stop from 20mph to 0. There really is no excuse for that...and as I wear them down, I am sure it will go away - but annoying. Also, there is a very slight rattle that I will need addressed around idle. Lastly, I was told my car would be done Friday...and ultimately was done Wednesday of the following week. I didn't need my car for any reason, but as we all know setting false expectations is bad for business. In conclusion - the value-add projects were enough for me not to care all that much about some of the minor issues that came up along the way. I would recommend this spot for someone who needs work done on their sportscar. The mechanics know what is going on, and will give you a fair price. In some instances, they will let you order parts and then they will put them on for you - but don't tell anyone that. This shop prompted me to finally write a review on yelp, so that should also speak to something. read more
