All was beautifully presented on a black elongated oval dish. Lovely!! And, the soy sauce is low-sodium-yes please, and thank you! The chop sticks are black, and not the throw-away kind. It is obvious that design has been well thought out. I find the interior design calming. As a New Yorker, I appreciate the calm!! From the zen-like framed art on the walls to the lighting, I really like it here. Soft music which does not interfere with any conversation you might want to have. Attentive Service-water glasses refilled before anyone needs to ask. When I asked for additional ginger, it was brought to my table in a timely manner. The service is friendly and professional. The unisex restroom is clean and spacious. There is no hook to hang a tote bag or coat. Would be nice, but on this hot summer day, I put my small bag on the counter near the lovely sink. Huge fan of Mikado's HH! At $6 a roll, this place is such great value for its location. Cocktails are also $7, and appetizers range from $1-$5. My favorite part of the menu was the $1 bowl of edamame, which is unheard of at other places! The cocktails are also really strong for their price point, but there were a few cocktails that weren't available because they were out of ingredients, unfortunately. It was my first time eating yellowtail scallion roll, and this restaurant absolutely changed my sushi-eating experience. The roll was very fresh-tasting, and the fish to rice ratio was absolutely amazing. I also enjoyed the spicy tuna roll, which was a classic. Next time, I would skip the eel roll. I've also had this place to-go/delivered for dinner, as they have great box deals on Uber, but I would prefer to eat in-person. The servers are very kind and patient. One of our friends was arriving late, but they let us sit anyway during HH and wasn't bothered that we were waiting for our other friend to arrive. This review is for the happy hour--a great deal price-wise and everything we got was fresh. Cucumber salad for just $3 was just cucumber and dressing but I enjoyed it. The sushi rolls were just 4 pieces each but had a lot of fish inside! A lot of the photos show the take out but the interior was a cute spot and was a fairly quiet but still lively ambiance. Living in NYC as a sushi lover means constantly searching for new places that can fulfill your regular takeout needs. Sadly, for the most part, this city now consists of super high end omakase or super low end takeout and not much in between. The days of reliable, quality sushi spots where you can get quality rolls with fresh fish are mostly long gone. Which is why I get so excited when I find spots like Mikado, Poke and Goal (all UES) which offer good fish / rolls without having to commit to crazy omakase experiences. Mikado follows a somewhat similar experience as Sugarfish, offering set roll packages that come in neatly packaged boxes. We got the basics - spicy tuna, California, shrimp tempura etc and all were fresh and quite good. Had some apps too (don't sleep on the pickled cucumber salad, it's fire!) which were all good. We ordered the sushi and maki set and scallop with rice dish. The sushi and maki were totally stand out! The fish was so fresh and melt in your mouth, and the maki were three times the size of what you typically get in NY. Great flavors too on the nigiri. Absolutely Disappointed, Cramped Seating, Poor Service, and Inedible Uni I hate to write reviews like this, but I feel it's best to put it out there so other diners can be aware We ate at Mikado Sushi tonight as a party of 3 and unfortunately, it was one of the most disappointing dining experiences we've had in a long time. Although the ambience is nice and they play soft classical music to make the space feel more elevated, overall this spot left much to be desired. We walked in without a reservation and agreed to wait, which was totally fine. But when we were finally seated, they crammed all three of us (two adults and a tall 16-year-old) at a tiny two-person table. This might work for a child, but for three adults (one of us is 6' tall), it was extremely uncomfortable. When we politely asked if we could move to a larger table once one opened up, the staff initially said yes but then later changed their mind. Service was inattentive from the start. We had to ask multiple times for water, and even then, we were met with annoyed expressions and borderline rudeness. No one ever checked in on us during the meal, and it wasn't until after we ate that someone finally came by without request with a water refill...too little, too late. Now onto the food, which was just as underwhelming: * Crispy rice appetizer ($14): Only 3 pieces, and they were hard, stale, and tasted like old oil. Crispy rice is one of my favorite dishes, and this version was honestly the worst I've had. * Tuna sushi: Just okay, but nothing memorable. * 4-hand roll special (maki option): We expected 6 pieces per roll, as is typical, but got just 4. My son took a few bites and said, "Doesn't this taste like buffet sushi?" which really says it all. * Deluxe sushi platter: The sushi was unpleasantly fishy (like the fish has been out awhile) and the toro scallion roll lacked flavor. The rice was hard and lacked the typical sushi vinegar seasoning. * Uni with truffle pâté ($20): As an avid uni eater, this was inedible. The texture was off like soft cartilage and it had a bitter, almost burning aftertaste. I rarely send anything back, but this was that bad. * Bluefin otoro ($18): Completely underwhelming bland, it didn't seem fresh, and strangely textured as if it had been pounded flat. * Chicken donburi ($22): My friend said it was chewy and dry, and the cheese was oddly sweet. I only tried the chicken, which I can confirm was not good. The total came to about $187 with tip, and while we had planned to tip 15% due to the poor service, the custom tip button was conveniently "broken," leaving 18% as the minimum option.. Final thoughts: Between the cramped seating, rude and inattentive service, and low-quality food, this meal was a complete miss. For the price, I expected at least one dish to be decent but sadly, nothing stood out in a good way. We left frustrated, disappointed, and honestly wishing we had gone somewhere else. Yesterday I decided to try Mikado. I arrived shortly before their happy hour ended which is from 3:30 to 6:30. Before arriving I had planned to order a don and sake, but when they placed the happy hour menu in front of me, it was so cheap, I decided why not. Unfortunately, when you buy cheap, you don't get quality. I ordered a hot sake, shrimp shumai and 2 rolls. The sake was just okay, but very hot, which I appreciated. Can't complain for $5. The shumai was average and containing very little shrimp. The rolls consisted of 4 large pieces each with seaweed that was difficult to chew. Too big to put a complete roll in my mouth, I struggled trying to eat them without being messy. The shrimp tempura roll had very little shrimp, and the salmon avocado roll had fresh but a lesser quality salmon. On the menu it indicated the shumai was $6 and the rolls were $5, but they charged me $6 for the rolls and $5 for the shumai. Strange. The service was friendly and very swift. The inside of the restaurant is modern and small with table seating. It is incredibly noisy and busy, which makes it difficult to enjoy yourself. They do a booming business - people continuously in and out and endless delivery pickups. I guess people like the price. Because of the noise and the quality of the food, I don't plan to return, but I might try one of their other locations, which look more interesting.
