We got a reservation for Yasaka for dinner, and had a good time. When we got there, we had to wait for a few minutes for a table to open up before seating. Indoor had lots of tables with moody lighting. I think the food is okay, the fish quality was fine but for the price, I expected better? Or a bit more? It just didn't wow me as much as other sushi spots in NYC.

I have been here several times and I am happy each time. They're easily able to accommodate allergies and food preferences (e.g. I don't eat shellfish), even for the omakase offerings. The fish is fresh and the service is solid. It's nice-casual and always full (for good reason)!

I got the Miyabi dinner and for only $39 the amount of sashimi, nigiri, and sushi I got is incomparable to other places. The salmon was melt in your mouth fresh and the tuna was also great. Honestly didn't know what all the white fishes were but they were great too. The sushi was ready about 15 mins faster than expected so it was quick! I'll definitely be ordering from here again

YUM!!! It's mostly maki from what I saw but the rice was incredible - soft and flavorful and the rolls all hit the spot. Couldn't get r enough! Highlights were the spicy yellowtail roll, creamy blue crab california roll, and toro tartare. We got the two milky sake bottles and they were delicious. Good service as well.

Good sushi for a great price! When I saw the prices on the menu for some of the combos I was expecting the sushi to be pretty small or mediocre, but neither was the case. This spot blew away any expectations I had for a casual sushi spot. I ordered the Miyabi sushi entree which came with 6 pieces of nigiri, 12 pieces of sashimi (menu siad 10, but I got 12), and a roll - I went with the salmon avocado roll. Everything was really good, but after a big day of eating it was so much food. I ended up giving multiple pieces of sashimi to my boyfriend who had opted for the Mini Omakase. When comparing the regular sushi with the Omakase, it was clear the Omakase was higher quality and more thoughtful, but the regular sushi was still very good. I also got the miso soup, and was surprised to see a few different miso soups on the menu, including a special one with clams. Had a later reservation here and was shocked by how packed the place was. Looked like every table was taken and people were waiting, so good idea to make a reservation to skip the wait.

Good, affordable Japanese food can be surprisingly hard to find in New York--so many places are either very expensive or strictly omakase. Sushi Yasaka was a refreshing change. It's a true mom-and-pop spot with great lunch deals and consistently solid quality. It's clearly a neighborhood staple: the restaurant was packed and super lively! I'd definitely recommend making a reservation if you can, though I was able to snag one the morning of for lunch without much trouble. If I lived closer, this would easily be a regular go-to for me.

Always love coming to Sushi Yasaka. They're really busy so definitely make sure to have a reservation (usually it's not too hard to book in advance for lunch, which are the best times to come anyway). I really appreciate that they also offer their lunch special options on weekends, too, so corporate slaves like me can still try their cheap and delicious lunch sets :) I usually order the miyabi lunch with a side of salad. The fish is always so amazingly fresh and high-quality, and it's a perfect portion size and mix of pieces of sushi, sashimi, and rolls. The salad is a nice starter but not particularly unique as such. It's always a difficult choice between the miyabi lunch and the chirashi lunch, which I think looks similarly yummy, too. Will definitely want to come back and try more of their delicious lunch specials :)

I can see why this place would be solid for takeout. The prices are affordable and most of the fish is not fishy. However, I did not have a nice experience here. The spot seems to be very very casual (the host was wearing an oversized hoodie), despite the seating feeling a bit more fancy. I was hoping with the number of reviews, this would be one of those lowkey places that is secretly amazing. However, the rolls we got were extremely poorly made. The ones with seaweed in the outside were not fully wrapped. The fish filling was not placed evenly. The ingredients were not evenly distributed (got some yellowtail jalapeno without any jalapeno). Lastly, the yellowtail did have a lot of connective tissue that was not cut out. I know that can happen, but it did seem like the chefs here are not very meticulous. To be fair, it seems like they deal with a high volume of takeout which is probably why dine-in suffers, but this was truly below average. The quality of fish is good. If I lived in the area, I might order takeout. It is not exceptional but it is certainly good. The miso soup was really good. The service is above average.

I came for sushi and left with a masterclass in how not to serve customers. I really wanted to love Sushi Yasaka, but my visit was let down by one server, Lucas, whose inattentive service and dismissive attitude overshadowed what could have been a great meal. Despite being seated earlier, my table received food well after others, and my water glass went unfilled while I watched him regularly refill neighboring tables. The busboy was far more attentive; I even tipped him separately in appreciation. The main issue arose with my tempura appetizer: the shrimp had an off taste, and some pieces were not de-veined. When I asked about it, Lucas insisted that "the kitchen leaves veins in" and seemed unfamiliar with what I was referring to. At no point did he apologize or offer to address the concern, he simply repeated that "that's how it's served." Another server later confirmed the issue, apologized immediately, and offered to remove the item from the bill. Her professionalism stood in stark contrast to Lucas's handling of the situation and helped salvage part of my experience. The food and most of the team impressed me, but service gaps like this make me think twice about returning.

Sushi Yasaka delivers consistently fresh and perfectly crafted sushi that keeps you coming back. Food (5/5) - Exceptional freshness and precision in every piece, with standout nigiri and well-balanced rolls. Value (5/5) - Top-tier quality at prices far below what you'd expect for sushi of this caliber. Service (5/5) - Attentive and quick.

Great value sushi. My favorite dish was the aged dashi tofu. Chirashi bowl and soba noodles were also tasty. No frill place, cozy and warm. Speedy service. I would definitely come back.

Food: The sushi is always fresh and high quality here. I have been coming here for many years, and the quality is consistent. They offer a variety of sushi and kitchen appetizers and entrees. Food here is very authentic. Their lunch specials are a great deal. The chirashi bowl is $20 for lunch, and they have other sushi sets for $16-$20. The sushi at this place is better quality than an average sushi restaurant in NYC. Service: Staff are very friendly and nice, but service is average. They come to take your order and don't really check on you after that. My water glass was empty for a good portion of the meal, but no one came to refill it. Ambiance: The restaurant is a good size with tables for smaller and larger groups. I would recommend making a reservation because the place does fill up quickly. Overall, I would highly recommend this restaurant.

Great spot for sushi in the upper west - great before a show or a movie! Simple and small set up inside, but serving great quality sushi. Each piece had a nice thick slice of fish and good rice to fish ratio. We started with a couple of apps to share, including the karage chicken which came with six big pieces and was piping hot but delicious! We also got a tuna tartare with crunchy seaweed chips. Both were great. I got the deluxe which came with 9 pieces and a roll. My friends got the Miyabi with 6 pieces of sushi, 10 pieces sashimi and a roll. By the end we were all full. They offer dessert- ice cream, mochi, and a chocolate pudding but were out of some when we were there. Service was fast and attentive but they forgot to refill our water after our meal arrived. Overall, great option when you want sushi in the upper west!

Ask the Community - Sushi Yasaka

Is there music / are there speakers in the restaurant? Couldn't see any in the interior photos.

The restaurant has low volume background music. It's not loud and conversations are easily heard.

Can you eat at the sushi bar?

There are only tables at the restaurant, no bar for seating

    Is there outdoor seating?

No. But we were there in the winter.

How do you make a reservation?

I've made them through OpenTable.com- if you go to yasaka's website, you can locate it there too.

    So they have lunch specials?

Yes ! For the sushi option, I usually order the Miyabi lunch special. For non-sushi, I usually order the King Salmon or Chicken Teriyaki. IMO the king salmon is better than chicken.

Is it BYOB or do they have a bar?

They have a bar. I had a glass of wine with lunch.

Do they use imitation crab in their California roll?

Yes. But they also have a real crab one. I tried both and they are good!!

    Do they take walk ins?

They do, but the times I've been there (for weekday dinner), they have been so busy that it is almost impossible to actually walk in. You would still probably have to wait. Highly recommended to make a reservation if you can!

Is there a wine list? If so, what kind of Pinot noir do you carry?

Yes, they do have a wine list. Not sure about the second question though, as I do not usually drink Pinot noir...

I notice theres a change in your new menu online but i no longer find the sushi rice on your menu, does it mean that the sushi rice is not for delivery?…

I recently ordered food and I saw that they have sushi rice. It's all the way on the bottom.

How does Omakase work? Do you set your price and they go based off of that?

$50 for 12 and then a la carte for any addition pieces. Trust the chef! And sit at the bar for experience.

To drink, I had a Hot Organic Super Matcha Tea for 4.95. It was alright tea, and I wish teas were included in the price point, as otherwise, this place feels pretty traditional. In terms of food, I only ordered from the seasonal menu, so I'm not sure how the rest of the dishes are, but from what I had, I would go back for a light traditional meal. My appetizer was the Dashimaki Tamago/だし巻まき卵たま, or sweet savory omelet with daikon for $6.98. This came with three pieces along with a little dollop of grated radish. The pieces had a light sweetness to them along with a bit of savoriness. They were juicy and a bit bouncy while maintaining some softness. This was standard and good. My main dish was the $19.98 Beef Tan Tan Udon, or ground sirloin beef, spicy broth, baby bok choy, kikurage mushroom, scallions, and sesame seeds. While I have preferred udon from spots like Raku, the udon had a mild chew to it, and they were still good. The broth had a mix of sweetness and spiciness with a nice depth of flavor. The vegetables inside tasted fresh, and the meat added some richness. This was good as well. I wouldn't recommend going out of your way to go here, but the food was good. If you're in the area and looking for no frills Japanese dining in a more comfortable atmosphere at pretty decent Midtown East prices, I would recommend this place.
