Had their beer (the Oktoberfest in Seaport Harbor and it was VERY GOOD). So walking around Ocean Beach and found one of there tap rooms so had to have it again. Not too busy as they just finished up a Music Bingo game. Ben the bartender was very nice. Not too big of a tap room but a nice vibe anyway, UNTIL a dog in the bar peed in the middle of the floor about 3 feet from me. I'm not talking a few drops, I'm talking a LOT of pee. NOT COOL at all. I know there's not an outdoor area at this location so needless to say should not have dogs. Granted the dog owner went in the back and got a mop & bucket but just pushed it around. Great vibes at this location. Tap list is huge and diverse. Can bring your dog and own food in. They have so many events listed on their wall, so it's never a dull moment. The seating area is not huge so I can see how it can feel cramped when it's packed. Two bathrooms that were kept clean. Their 4pack and t shirt deal is a great one you can't ignore. Love this place Wish we caught the guys name working. We were there Mothers Day. He had a beard was bald and was tatted. Super nice guy and was very helpful about which beer to order without us even having to ask which I absolutely loved. I am very indecisive and he asked us what type of beer we liked and gave us samples based off our answers without us even having to ask for a sample. My kolsh he suggested was perfect. Thank you. Extremely friendly and personable. Gave our dogs a dog treat and also offered to move the community dog bowl over to a woman with her dog who was on the other side of the sitting area. Had stayed away for awhile because, well, IYKYK. Their classic Solis IPA in particular seemed thin and fizzy. Used to be more resinous with a bite. Empty midday, maybe people come late? Ambiance problem when I was there. Dreary. Counters a little sticky. Yelp has blocked two previous negative reviews of Hess because of references to the issue that everyone talks about with Hess. I discussed that with the bartender and she said that happens all the time. Lots of negative reviews get blocked but she didn't want to talk about why. Whateves. Never thought I would say this for a San Diego microbrewery but you might as well stick with the Steel Beach Lager, a basic drinkable pilsner, the other beers just don't show attention to detail. read more

Great chill spot in a quieter part of OB that actually has parking. Super clean interior with bar stools etc and friendly service when picking one of their many many beers on tap. Great tasting beer, I'm gluten sensitive but am willing to drink beer after taking digestive enzymes. They have seltzers that are unique in flavor. We were informed that their beer is GF but given there's so much red tape around the label "gf" they don't advertise it as GF. Honestly tho, I enjoyed their beer bloat free... the must be using the best quality, little preservatives. Their Bartender tho, he was beautiful. Looks like he could be out of an Indian Bollywood movie. Yet, So Vanilla. All beauty maybe very little brains. Idk tbd, he def doesn't know how to invoke a convo. He made me feel like I was a nuisance with all my conversation. I had to ask him questions, and he had ample opportunity to sell me on so much. I was walking down the street and was sprayed in the face by the guy wiping tables. Not a huge problem, I said dude you just sprayed me in the face. He says oh yeah? Like he didn't care and it was my fault for walking down the street. So I continued on and came back roughly 30 minutes later and approached him. I ask him why he responded so rudely immediately he says "so you were thinking about it" and comments on how I should have reacted. We went in for a quick beer one of the nights on our way home from a walk but enjoyed the atmosphere so much, we came back a second time with our pup the next day! Mike Hess is my new favorite brewery in Ocean Beach - Pizza Port is now a close second! That they have great beer is a given, especially since they were able to open multiple locations in such a competitive geographic location. What sets it apart is that they also have great service and even offer great merchandise if you're in to that stuff (I am)! They're open during COVID and are offering discounts during these challenging times. I was able to pickup a shirt for $10 with a purchase of a six pack, which is a great deal. Check out their website for more specials since they have many. They're also dog friendly and offer merchandise for dogs as well. Not only are the servers friendly, but they recommended a mixture of two beers on tap (Single Fin and an Orange IPA) that was excellent. Really great custoner service and really good beer. Which is gluten reduced! We ordered a flight and with it the T-shirts are only $10 so worth it. I had the cream ale very delicious!! I know they rotate some seasonally, but many of the beers were under 6% ABV (I usually look for the 7-9'ers) and I just wasn't impressed with the choices overall. We happened to be there on cask night. Depending on county and state laws, they may be serving people inside, and they may require that you order food. Also, at least when indoor service is allowed, they host trivia on Thursdays. - Check their Untappd profile for what they have on tap. Look out for seasonal and limited selections. I love Umbrix and all of its variations, but you can't go wrong with Solis. The beers are stellar! I love the Grapefruit Solis and the Habitus. They are dog friendly and The atmosphere is relaxed and awesome. The layout is open and it has a nice vibe. They have water bowls out for dogs and sell dog treats. The first time I went to this Brewery I had a flight and you get a free decorated beer glass with every flight. They also sell six packs of some of their beer in cans, which is smart if you are in Ocean Beach in case you want to take it to a pool or the beach. Wait, that's not legal anymore, but oh well. I was surprised to see how few people have submitted reviews for this great little spot. For locals this place is flying under the radar and I can't recommend this little local gem enough. When it comes to a brew room this place has great seating and a laid back atmosphere that is a solid echo from the vibe of the neighborhood. Every element feels authentically local. During my stay I enjoyed both a Grapefruit Solis and Into The Sunset to drink. Both were full of flavor and light. Both have a lovely fruit flavor on the back, though if forced I would say Into The Sunset was my favorite. The service was fast, friendly and polite. Everything you are looking for. Fair warnings, the parking here is awful and the spot isn't too big, so medium sized groups will be your best bet. Make your way to this spot and you will have a great time, guaranteed. read more

I will start with the fantastic, the beer. The beer at Mike Hess is always cold and super yummy. We have yet to discover a beer we haven't enjoyed. Now for the awkward. We have been to the Seaport Village location and there seems to be a night and day difference in service. The location at Ocean beach is much smaller and they don't serve food but I don't think the service should suffer because of that. We had previously tried a Girl Scout Cookie flight at a very serious competitor for Mike Hess and as far as presentation goes, Mike Hess has something to learn. The cookies they bring to you are brought in a snack size baggie. While I'm sure this cuts serving time, it also allows the cookies to absorb each other's flavor, especially once a thin mint is added to the mix. Saying it's a sanitary thing doesn't work because it's the same as putting a lime wedge in my drink. This is just a pre-made cookie on a board or plate. We also watched the manager or bar tender in charge stuff the baggies out on the floor with no gloves. The competitors are also more than willing to bring the kids cookies at no extra charge since it's not very nice to ask a CHILD to watch their parents enjoy cookies served with their drinks when they don't get to eat any. And no, the adult should not have to share theirs, that's the whole point of the flight. I would have gladly paid $5 bucks for my child to get cookies but we were refused for the reason "we only have enough for our number of flights allotted." This place sells flights regularly so if the cookies truly come free with the flight like they claim, that excuse doesn't pan out. San Diego is very family friendly and this was the first time we felt having our 6 year old with us was not welcome. It's for this service issue that we removed some stars. The place itself is very beachy and we came in on a rainy day with plenty of space to sit and the huge windows were great to watch the rain pour down. They were also having a shirt sale so that was fun. We do love Mike Hess but we will be going to the Seaport location. Hopefully, when you choose to come in it's a better experience because the beer deserves it! read more

One of the best breweries in town. Everything they touch turns to gold, doesn't matter the style. They offer expertly designed and executed recipes with no distractions. I personally was worried I wouldn't fit these guys in on my CA beer trip, thanks to some dim-witted route planning. It didn't even occur to me to bookmark one of the tasting rooms, and I didn't think I'd make it to the main facility. Dumb luck saved me from my dumb plan, since Uber brought me right by this place and convinced me to add it back to the itinerary. So glad I did. It'd be crazy to miss this place. There's just enough going on inside to feel good about being here--two long walls of gatefold doors open to turn the whole place into a covered patio. There are tables and rows of stools, and some nice folks behind the bar. Bathrooms are clean. They don't have video games or pool tables or any of that kind of stuff, but no mistake: it's a nice little taproom. They offer a bunch of spectacular hoppy beers and a ton of beautifully-executed classic styles. Amazing oktoberfest, amazing kolsch. Drool-worthy IPAs, and a fantastic imperial stout. You can only try so much in one sitting, though, and I wish I could say I'd tried the other stuff they were pouring. I'll definitely be back, and will seek out bottles or cans of these guys whenever I can find them. If you're picky about beer, I can't recommend them enough. read more

I think this is my favorite Hess location. Shame it's a bit of a hike for us, though, especially since the North Park location is a short Uber drive away. We walked to this Hess after leaving the disappointing OB Oktoberfest. We were kind of hoping that this location would still have some Oktoberhess on tap, but that was not to be. Still, the people were friendly, the beer was everything we've come to expect from Mike Hess, and the view from our table couldn't be beat. They're also dog-friendly, which would come in handy for us, if we could find a way to get our mongrels into an Uber for the trip there and back. And the bathrooms are large and clean, which I can appreciate (though only one-holers). I settled in with a taster, of course, because I was already buzzed and really like collecting the glasses after turning in the poker chip (I'm sure it's cheaper to buy a glass, but it's the sport of it all that gets me!) Something to note is that they don't use the shot glasses for the taster pours here; their carrying tray has notches built in to carry the stemmed glasses (yes, I'm sure there's a technical word for the type of glass they use...) Nothing wrong with that, of course, just something I noted. It didn't get too crowded in there, which was surprising for a Saturday afternoon. Maybe it gets busier as the night wears on? Super nice stop for a beer. Great staff, always fresh beer. Good selection of beer types and flavors. During the Covid times, I try to support them more. They make a nice bottle of hand sanitizer and have a mini growler deal that is the deal of the decade. I've been there a lot lately to fill my mini growler up. I love it. Last Saturday evening i went to the brewery and was happy to see two available tables outside and i stood by one until i got the attention of an employee standing in the doorway maybe 15 feet away. He motioned for me to come to him and he said: "these tables are for paying customers". I said "that's an insult" and walked away while he said "just making sure" and i went to the voltaire beach house. I had been to Mike Hess twice, love the beer, during the week ordering the roast beef sandwich and two OG IPAs leaving 25% tips. I am not a street bum by any means and found it highly insulting. Whoever does employee training there needs to correct this. read more
