Mid-March in southern Maine and looking for lobster on a Monday night doesn't give a whole lot of options. Most places are still closed or just now opening up for weekends only. Fortunately, Mikes Clam Shack is always open. It's a pretty casual place, but our waitress was friendly, and more than happy to discuss food options with us - and teach us how to eat whole lobster properly! Probably a pretty common occurrence for central USA tourists like us. Anyway, if you want whole lobsters here, their meals come with 1 1/8 lb lobsters. So that's a little easier on the pocketbook if you have that concern. And they give you the option of sizing up to larger ones - up to 2 lb or so lobsters, I believe. I had my wife get the Twin Lobsters entree - that's two 1 1/8 lb lobsters, plus cole slaw and choice of potato. This way, I could eat one of her lobsters in addition to my entree. My choice was the Shore Dinner - a 1 1/8 lb lobster, a mess of steamed clams, a cup of clam chowder, plus cole slaw and choice of potato. Lobsters were all fresh (of course, duh) and hot. Hard to go wrong there. The cup of clam chowder was actually pretty large and very tasty - good job on their part. The steamed clams were a bit disappointing - but mainly because they got cold so fast; and I think cold steamed clams are like eating snot. The sides were kind of disappointing, too. Slaw was just generic, and the "Shack Potato" (Diced potato, peppers, onions, and parmesan cheese, mixed with sour cream and butter, then baked) was just bland. Ah well, despite the disappointing sides, I have to still give three stars for A-OK. They hit well with the seafood, including the chowder, and the atmosphere and service were quite enjoyable. read more

Was there over July 4th weekend. It's a fair place, nothing special. Prices seemed high. I was really disappointed in the lobster stew which was mediocre at best. We had better three days later at another local establishment. To be honest it was REALLY much better elsewhere and $10 cheaper than the astounding $25 I was charged. service was ok. read more

There's a reason the parking lot is full most of the time . The atmosphere is great . The menu is huge but everything is good . My wife loves the seafood and I love the burgers and steak . We've turned my best friend and my stepdaughter into huge fans . We always get this petite waitress who is the best at what she does . We've never had a bad meal there . Grabbed food to go on Friday afternoon. Wait was shorter than expected. Ordered a combo platter with clam strips and shrimp, as well as an order of clam chowder. Clam chowder was great, perfect consistency; not broth but not so thick you can only eat a bite or two. Clams were fresh, not chewy and the perfect amount of sea salty. The combo platter was a great portion, fries were yummy and clam strips were also fresh, not chewy and great light breading. Only two things keeping this from being a 5 star experience we're the Cole slaw and shrimp; slaw wasn't flavorful, needed some more spices. The shrimp were the size of my pinky nail, not sure if that's the norm here, used to 5-6 large fried shrimp when we do seafood in Ma but none the less they tasted great. read more

Went to Mikes Clam Shack today around four pm, it was not crowded, we sat at the bar because the Red Sox were playing, upon sitting our server appeared, instantly, we ordered drinks, our server kept her eye on us and went over and above that which is required of her, she kept our drinks topped and never stopped working, she is a definite asset to this restaurant, now to the food, I asked about the lobster roll as I had one at x restaurant and it was very skimpy, she assured me I would be happy with my lobster roll, and I was I will definitely recommend Mikes, awesome restaurant and my server was awesome! We picked Mike's after looking at a menu left at the rental house plus the reviews from Yelp. We highly recommend Mike's Clam shack. We were seated right away on a Thursday night at 5:30ish. Much bigger on the inside then it looks outside. Very casual family restaurant. We ordered beers from a good selection. We started off with a bowl of clam chowder and a cup of seafood chowder. Both were very tasty and had a good amount of seafood. I ordered the Shack burger that came with lett, tom, pickles, fried onions and cheese. It was very tasty. My bf got the fried fisherman's platter. Very light batter with flavor! It came with a big basket of onion rings and 2 sides of your choice. He got cole slaw and baked potato. My son got the shrimp Alfredo over linguini. It was served with 2 slices of garlic bread. He was hungry enough to finish it all and gave it multiple thumbs up! . The portions were enough to leave you too full and a box of leftover fries and onion rings. The hostess was very friendly. Our server was so nice and accommodating. Very friendly and thoughtful. The food is pretty bland. Ended up here because Lord's seafood is closed on Monday. My wife and I both ordered haddock and chips. The batter for the haddock chunks was very light and overall not bad. The haddock tasted fresh but lacked any flavor. The kids cheese pizza was a typical frozen personal pizza. Seafood chowder was not very good... no haddock chowder option. Our waitress was fine but did not check on us and did not refill my drink. Overall it is a bit pricey ($70 with tip) and rated out at 2.5 stars. read more

My first time at Mike's as I suggest to my sister there is more than Warren's Lobster House around here. Anyways, sat in the sports bar area. Lots of room, well laid out. Our waitress was awesome! Ordered the lunch portion of the Broiled Scallops and a cup of Clam Chowder. Both were HOT and awesome! Lots of scallops and the chowdah was thick and tasty! We often visit Mikes because we have a camper only 20 minutes away. I have a gluten allergy and there's not many places I've had luck with in the area. Tonight we stopped by with our 2 youngest kids and had a server named Michelle. She took amazing care of us!!! She balanced our experience with enough personal vs. professional level we had an amazing time. Its servers like Michelle and delicious food like yours that will keep us coming back time after time. My husband and I have dined at Mike's Clam Shack several times and always ordered the fried clams. I came for the day with my sister and two friends. We had dinner. One of my friends ordered the clam strips, the other friend and I ordered the reg fried clams. My sister ordered the pot roast. The clams were very chewy (the tail part) and so were the clam strips. I was so disappointed. My sister said pot roast was not hot and fatty. Our waitress was fabulous and side dishes good. Mike's is a great restaurant and one of our go to's in town. They have a great bar setup and the live music is very nice. My only complaint would be the lines in the summer and the prices on their dinner items are a little steep. I'm not for paying for the tourist experience since we live here. I've been coming here for over 20 years since they had their first location. This has always been a favorite and one of the highlights of any of our visits to Wells. I've been recommending this place to my friends for years and everyone has agreed that this restaurant has the best seafood ever. I had heard that lately the food was not as good as it used to be. But as Mikes has always been a staple and one of my favorites, these opinions didn't discourage me from going. We went there yesterday for lunch and ordered from the takeout window to eat outside. We ordered our usual fried seafood platter and clam chowder and waited at one of the picnic tables. It was a beautiful sunny day without a cloud in the sky. We got our order and started on the clam chowder. It had absolutely no flavor at all and not many clams. We started on our seafood and fried onion rings. Instead of the usual crispy breaded outside topping, the topping was not crispy, not flavorful, and greasy. Also the proportion of fried fish to onion rings and French fries was much smaller than usual. I feel bad writing this review but Mike what's going on? Please fix these problems so we can come back to one of our favorite places. read more

I was excited to bring my British Boyfriend to Maine for some amazing, fresh seafood. Mike's was recommended, so we decided to go there. The restaurant itself inside reminds one of a Weathervane or a Pondrarosa type place- kind of tacky and outdated but expected for a tourist type place. Due to the lack of charm we expected large portions of steaming seafood that we would dream about for months to come. Also this is on Route 1, no water in sight. First, no rolls or bread of any kind was brought to the table and a quick look around confirmed that nobody else was receiving bread either. Disappointing and weird for a fairly expensive seafood establishment. We ordered "regular" size dinners (after all, we are regular people!). I ordered Fried Sea Scallops and he ordered Clam Strips. When the meals came, they were SMALL!! We shared both and split them so we each had half of the scallops and clams. The plates were small oval plates, mine came with a baked potato, no butter and his was a small dish of FAKE mashed potatoes! Of course the usual coleslaw that nobody eats was on the plate as well. Ick! An ear of corn would have been nice. Anyway, on to the seafood. I was shocked that a $20 plate of scallops consisted of 9 scallops, and all in pieces! There were only 4 whole scallops, the rest were partials and small bits, and they were breaded that way! I've never had bits and pieces like that, and certainly not at that price! The Clam Strips arrived luke warm and were therefore rubbery and also skinnier than usual clam strips which was weird. When we finished the meal, we were both still hungry!!! For a $60, we should NOT have been hungry! We went across the street to the Hannifords grocery store and bought some food to bring back to the room to eat. Would it really have been hard for them to toss a couple cheap rolls out on the table before dinner and a piece of fresh corn sold everywhere for about .20 served with the meal? Had they done that, we still would not have been thrilled with the quality, but we would not have left feeling icky and hungry and ripped off- we just would not have gone back. But this experience was so bad, I feel that I really do have to warn others to avoid this place. It is so hard to choose where to eat when in a new area or vacationing as you want to really enjoy the entire trip and a bad meal can really ruin a night- especially when you are dropping $60+ for a meal for 2 people. I should say that I like really good food, but not expensive food. I like fresh, whole ingredients. For example if given a choice while traveling between Panera or McDonalds, than I go with Panera every time. So if you are a McDonalds person, you may like the waitress that does not seem to care, the small portions, the stale atmosphere, and the mediocre at best food. But if you like value for dollar, then save your dollars!! I have really enjoyed The Lobster Shack in Ogunquit- go there instead. the food is awesome and there is so much more for the money. So... we decide to stop in here on a Friday starting Columbus Day weekend since a few of our haunts were either closed or destroyed by the thought of sitting in construction traffic South of here. Entering the massive parking lot and looking at the massive structure, we thought "Looks like they know how to handle crowds" and so we went in. The host advises us (after doing a tango-like dance to get to his podium) the wait would be 40 minutes and yes, it took 40 minutes of standing in the gift shop before we were called to our table. The choices are the usual fare at a seafood joint with pricing slightly more than it should have been. Both entrees we ordered were piping hot/fresh and better than expected, so that may negate the earlier price comment. The chowder is really quite good as well as our haddock. Dessert was equally impressive. Service was VERY prompt and attentive... being seated in the back next to a kitchen the employees apparently have been told to hustle, and it was proven to be effective. So, yeah, the big parking lot and big building structure prove that Mike's is feeding the masses quite well and seem to have a very good following. Have patience and give it a try! read more

Came in for lunch today and ordered the "lunch special" lobster roll and cup of clam Chowder for $17.50 Chowder came out right away and was descent The meal took so long to get to our table I forgot I already had the chowder The lobster roll was tiny and came with out fries. I wanted to tell the waitress "you want me to pay how much for this hotdog roll?" That's basically all it was. This used to be my "GO-TO place in Wells, but I do not like the new expanded restaurant. I still go there for take out. The clam chowder is quite good...loaded with clams and thick - the way I prefer. The clam strip roll is a bargain...I just wish they made their own tarter sauce. We always go to Bobs Clam Hut. Someone told us we needed to try mikes. So here we are. I am going to pretty much order what I do at the other place so we can compare. Lobster roll, clam chowder and clam strips. We both agree the clam strips were a little bit better than Bobs. Had a better flavor and I liked the batter a bit better. Bobs lobster roll is better. Bigger and the bread toasting is what makes Bobs better. I would recommend this restaurant. read more

can't give a full five stars as it took them a very, very long time to seat us and once we got inside we noticed many empty tables. At first we thought... "Oh, it's a Saturday night that's why it's taking such a long time." However, once we got in we questioned our prior theory. Anyway, despite that annoyance once we sat down we were greeted by a very sweet server. She was probably in her 50s or 60s and we could tell she enjoyed serving us 20 something year olds. First you have to wait, which I truly dislike. If they say app 20/25 minutes, there is no fun in finding out they have a bar (still don't understand why nobody told us) where you can eat as well. No waiting, available tables same menu ?!? A colleague of her picked up our impatience, (we are about 45 minutes at least here at Mike's), and offered to waiter us. Then all changed for the better! :) We ordered a small lobster ( 1 1/8) and a new York steak. Both were great! Lobster was nice and fresh as expected in this area and cooked well. The steak was exactly how you want the steak to be cooked and well flavored. For the food three stars. Afterwards we wanted to have a drink, as we were sitting in the bar anyway, so I ordered a Bloody Mary. It was fine - but come on, they can do better. Don't use the premix. It is only tomato juice, tabasco and some herbs use to make a fabulous replacement for the mix!!! The Bloody Mary was too premixed, and therefore lacking in taste. And an olive in a Bloody Mary? Really??? So bottom line; it is really crowded, expect to wait or go straight to the bar. The food is great!! The service can do better and the cocktails are better to be left in the bar and not to be ordered. Three stars for the food quality. read more
