Excellent chowder, lobster and seafood. Always a wait to be seated but worth every minute of it. Been coming to Maine on family vacations since I can remember and Mike's is always a stop...sometime's more than once. The chowder is chocked full of clams and is so creamy and buttery that you wish you could just eat it all day !! Their seafood choices are amazing and the lobsters are perfect every time. This place is about average for the price of a good meal 15-25 dollars per person. But you get what you pay for. I also recommend Mike's seafood market right next store. So I've been to Mike's twice since and it has disappointed :( The French onion soup is super salty, and the shrimp are against rubbery and overcooked. The most diappointing aspect was the kid's pizza. It's was the smallest pizza I've ever see , and it tasted worse. If the food was decent, I wouldn't mind the $100 bill, but do yourself a favor; skip the crowds and go elsewhere. read more

It is a very popular spot for the senior crowd. Not for this senior though. We went here for dinner on Wednesday night. Haven't been here for about 7 years, the parking lot was packed. The staff was pleasant and friendly. Although they clearly were short staffed (and I say this because even though there was a 15 minute wait, there were at least 4 tables open.) Two of the tables had six chairs and could of sat 7. I say this because the group behind us asked if they could seat 7 and were told no. We ordered 2 French onion soups. We both looked at each other after the first taste. Just a step above dark brown water with next to no taste. Finally at the bottom I said, I think this may be French onion soup. The sides of Brussel sprouts were again no taste. Looked like they never hit a grill or oven. Just blanched and had the plastic butter square sitting on top. I had a side of potato salad called white potato salad. That wasn't bad. My clam cakes were good but most likely frozen and fried. My wife had steak tips. She said the were average good. Visiting friends and found this gem ... nice rustic place ... good beer selection. Steamers as an app were incredibly good. Chowder was thick and creamy with a rich flavor. Fried clam plate with onion rings were delish. Onion rings looked like they were home made ....lightly battered and crispy not soggy. Lobster roll was on the small side but was tasty. Mikes has become a tradition in my family. The food is amazing. I always get their clam chowder. It tastes the same every single time and the clams are a good size. I usually order their linguini with Alfredo. It's a big enough portion for two meals. I am giving them four stars because they typically have long wait times, and high prices. read more

We ate here the day we pulled into town. We sat in the bar, tables were set at a good distance from each other. We chose to get the Lobster Bake. The corn on the cob was old but it's December. Didn't expect anything more. Cole slaw and baked potato were lost due to how delicious the cup of clam chowder was and the great lobster. Thanks for another good meal. Next time I'd go with the chowder and a lobster. That soup is so full of clams and a small portion of potatoes just enough to not take over the clams. Yummy. read more

BUGS IN FOOD. My wife and I were on vacation in Wells which we visit every summer. Our go-to restaurant was closed, so we figured we would try Mikes since it was close. Ate here with three children, salmon came out raw waitress was awful! will never go here again! The waitress Keri was terrible, she was miserable the entire time, rude to us, told my 9 year old that he's in a restaurant because he had a toy Whoopi cushion with him. When I told her my salmon was raw she didn't say a word just took it never came back to say if they were fixing it, in the main time I ate my child's grilled cheese and told her I was all set, she never once addressed it. We saw Mike's as we were driving toward the resort where we're staying for the next week and when we were checking in Alan asked our host about it and received a resounding recommendation. We were expecting a long wait for dinner on a Friday night, so we showed up around 6:00 and were very surprised to be seated immediately at a table for 4. Even the traffic on Route 1 was cooperative w/ our left turn to head north. The restaurant is large, as is the parking lot. The menu is extensive and there are many choices. Alan had several dishes he was considering, but I narrowed it down pretty quickly to the Half and Half, haddock and scallops, baked or broiled. It would come w/ two sides and I could add a small salad for $4.95. Our server, Maxie, brought us water to drink and I decided to have a glass of Lobster Reef Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand. I consulted w/ Maxie about the difference between baked or broiled and he explained that the baked was topped w/ Ritz cracker crumbs and was delicious. For my side I wanted the vegetable of the day, which was baby carrots or butternut squash. When I hesitated he said I could have half and half, which was perfect. While we were waiting to order Alan noticed a man at an adjacent table receiving a fisherman's platter and it looked so good he decided to have it. It had fried shrimp, whole belly clams, calamari, haddock and scallops as well as fries, coleslaw and onion rings. My salad came first and it was quite generous, w/ blue cheese dressing on the side. It was fresh and tasty, the lettuce crisp, cherry tomatoes flavorful, croutons, cheese, sliced cucumber, green pepper and a little bit of red onion. It was easily enough to share w/ Alan. My wine came next and it was an astonishingly generous pour. When our mains were served they were similarly generous, w/ Alan's being magnitudes larger than mine. We gave each other tastes and everything was good. The onion rings were plentiful and good, so good that Alan didn't even touch his fries and didn't finish his haddock. He commented that it was the best fisherman's platter he'd ever had and the onion rings were among the best. I had a bunch of them and agree they were great. He was less impressed w/ the coleslaw, taking one bite. My dish was delicious and I finished it. Both vegetables came w/ a small container of butter which I didn't use. My favorite was the squash, but the carrots were good too. We'd certainly return to Mike's to explore the menu further. read more

Surprisingly disappointed. The breading for the seafood platter I ordered was falling off the the haddock, scallops-everything. The breading looked more like a breadcrumb base than a flour base. I'm not saying it was a bad thing exactly- but the breading was seasoned and that took away from the natural flavors of the seafood which was cooked well (minus the shrimp that was over cooked). It was extremely greasy and I was disappointed that at least take out wise they give you packaged from Ken's and various over mass produced tartar/cocktail sauce. Their take out is packaged poorly with nothing to soak up the grease so the container was dripping and grease, as well as made everything soggy. The haddock fell apart when we tried to pick it up. The 'shacked' potatoes were flavorless. The seafood chowder was bland as well. The seafood cooked perfectly but just no flavor. I wasn't a fan of this place because of the seasoned breading, poorly drained seafood, lack of home made dipping sauces and bland chowder. The $24 seafood platter was pretty pricey for the amount of seafood received- they fill it up with onion rings, potato and cole slaw to look like a alot of food-just not seafood. read more

Again this place didn't disappoint. Saw a bunch of bad reviews before going and was nervous but hasn't changed. Great food and service. If you were worried about your safety during the pandemic maybe don't go out to eat, and if your kids are disrupting others during their meal and you can't control them, then get take out. To be blunt, I can't make a proper review, as my meal was steamed whole lobsters. However, I will say that they were properly cooked (not too done, not too under). Mid-March in southern Maine and looking for lobster on a Monday night doesn't give a whole lot of options. Most places are still closed or just now opening up for weekends only. Fortunately, Mikes Clam Shack is always open. It's a pretty casual place, but our waitress was friendly, and more than happy to discuss food options with us - and teach us how to eat whole lobster properly! Probably a pretty common occurrence for central USA tourists like us. Anyway, if you want whole lobsters here, their meals come with 1 1/8 lb lobsters. So that's a little easier on the pocketbook if you have that concern. And they give you the option of sizing up to larger ones - up to 2 lb or so lobsters, I believe. I had my wife get the Twin Lobsters entree - that's two 1 1/8 lb lobsters, plus cole slaw and choice of potato. This way, I could eat one of her lobsters in addition to my entree. My choice was the Shore Dinner - a 1 1/8 lb lobster, a mess of steamed clams, a cup of clam chowder, plus cole slaw and choice of potato. Lobsters were all fresh (of course, duh) and hot. Hard to go wrong there. The cup of clam chowder was actually pretty large and very tasty - good job on their part. The steamed clams were a bit disappointing - but mainly because they got cold so fast; and I think cold steamed clams are like eating snot. The sides were kind of disappointing, too. Slaw was just generic, and the "Shack Potato" (Diced potato, peppers, onions, and parmesan cheese, mixed with sour cream and butter, then baked) was just bland. Ah well, despite the disappointing sides, I have to still give three stars for A-OK. They hit well with the seafood, including the chowder, and the atmosphere and service were quite enjoyable. read more

Grabbed food to go on Friday afternoon. Wait was shorter than expected. Ordered a combo platter with clam strips and shrimp, as well as an order of clam chowder. Clam chowder was great, perfect consistency; not broth but not so thick you can only eat a bite or two. Clams were fresh, not chewy and the perfect amount of sea salty. The combo platter was a great portion, fries were yummy and clam strips were also fresh, not chewy and great light breading. Only two things keeping this from being a 5 star experience we're the Cole slaw and shrimp; slaw wasn't flavorful, needed some more spices. The shrimp were the size of my pinky nail, not sure if that's the norm here, used to 5-6 large fried shrimp when we do seafood in Ma but none the less they tasted great. read more

Went to Mikes Clam Shack today around four pm, it was not crowded, we sat at the bar because the Red Sox were playing, upon sitting our server appeared, instantly, we ordered drinks, our server kept her eye on us and went over and above that which is required of her, she kept our drinks topped and never stopped working, she is a definite asset to this restaurant, now to the food, I asked about the lobster roll as I had one at x restaurant and it was very skimpy, she assured me I would be happy with my lobster roll, and I was I will definitely recommend Mikes, awesome restaurant and my server was awesome! We picked Mike's after looking at a menu left at the rental house plus the reviews from Yelp. We highly recommend Mike's Clam shack. We were seated right away on a Thursday night at 5:30ish. Much bigger on the inside then it looks outside. Very casual family restaurant. We ordered beers from a good selection. We started off with a bowl of clam chowder and a cup of seafood chowder. Both were very tasty and had a good amount of seafood. I ordered the Shack burger that came with lett, tom, pickles, fried onions and cheese. It was very tasty. My bf got the fried fisherman's platter. Very light batter with flavor! It came with a big basket of onion rings and 2 sides of your choice. He got cole slaw and baked potato. My son got the shrimp Alfredo over linguini. It was served with 2 slices of garlic bread. He was hungry enough to finish it all and gave it multiple thumbs up! . The portions were enough to leave you too full and a box of leftover fries and onion rings. The hostess was very friendly. Our server was so nice and accommodating. Very friendly and thoughtful. The haddock tasted fresh but lacked any flavor. The kids cheese pizza was a typical frozen personal pizza. Seafood chowder was not very good... no haddock chowder option. Our waitress was fine but did not check on us and did not refill my drink. Overall it is a bit pricey ($70 with tip) and rated out at 2.5 stars. read more
