First let me say that we have been to Mike's several times when we visit Wells, ME. But last night we were sadly disappointed. The prices for lobster seemed to have dramatically increased. (We went to another restaurant and ordered lobster and the prices were more in line). I ordered the Teriyaki Marinated Chicken, it was dry and over cooked. The broccoli was undercooked. Three out of our four dinner we ordered were lacking in taste and flavor. The cup of clam chowder was excellent. The service was exceptional. Maybe we just hit an off night. First - ask to if Mari-Lee is working and if she is -- sit in her section. She has a wonderful attitude and gave us top notch service. (I'm sure there are other great servers, but I'll never get to see them.) We were a group of 5 and had burgers, chowder and fish and chips and all were pleased with their lunch. Steamer clams were gritty and caked in black mud. The seafood platter was mediocre at best. I've been eating Maine steamer clams my entire adult life and have never been served such a disgusting batch of dirty mollusks. After using the cleansing water to wash the first three clams, the water turned black as ink. And the mouthful of gritty sand that followed the black mud was even more disgusting. When we told our young server about the problem, she innocently stated that the clams that were delivered to the restaurant a few days before we're receiving similar reviews from other customers. Why did the restaurant manager allow an inferior product to be served after customer complaints? If you have the word "clam" in your restaurant's name and your restaurant is in a State (Maine)known for seafood, you are expected to serve a quality seafood meal. I think of the many visiting tourists from outside New England who seek out a restaurant for a quality Maine seafood dish and encounter such a disappointing culinary experience. Excellent chowder, lobster and seafood. Always a wait to be seated but worth every minute of it. Been coming to Maine on family vacations since I can remember and Mike's is always a stop...sometime's more than once. The chowder is chocked full of clams and is so creamy and buttery that you wish you could just eat it all day !! Their seafood choices are amazing and the lobsters are perfect every time. This place is about average for the price of a good meal 15-25 dollars per person. But you get what you pay for. I also recommend Mike's seafood market right next store. We are locals and looking for a place to go to lunch. With the Corona Virus upon us we were hesitant to go to one of our favorite places Mike's Clam Shack. The owner Mike posted a statement of how Mikes will be stepping it up by supplying hand sanitizer, wiping down surfaces, etc. We contemplated on staying home or going to Mike's but the letter suggested they where aware of proper sanitation so off we went. What was missed was OBVIOUS and elementary if you are serious about providing a safe environment : - The table salt and pepper shakers. They are sticky and appears to have been NEVER -wiped down. Solution: TAKE THEM OFF THE TABLE and replace with to go packets of salt and pepper. - Ketchup bottles: SAME AS ABOVE. Take them of the table and supply a to go cup of ketchup when needed. - Popcorn Machine: I expected to at least see a sign not to reuse bowl, NOPE NOTHING. Just pick up a bowl, go back to table, eat with hands and then go back AND REFILL with the contaminated bowl. Mike, you need to visit your restaurant more often. Just sending out a letter doesn't do it. IT might make you feel like you did your part but you are not protecting your customers or employees. I expected better. PS: Can you supply more than one hand dryer in the bathroom or at least a paper towel dispenser. I realize you are trying to save money but lets not be ridiculous. read more

Well, I'm a tourist on vacation, so this was our choice while staying in Wells. I'm from Pittsburgh, so maybe someone reading this would understand my review. I had the crab/scallops stuffed sole. Man, it sounded good on the menu, but it was the equivalent of a Eat n' Park's (Pittsburgh chain) Nantucket Cod dinner. Actually Eat n' Park's has more flavor. I will say our waitress was really good, and I definitely liked my scallops appetizer. My wife got the broiled chicken, which had 0 flavor. None. this chicken itself was Good, but no seasoning whatsoever. Her side salad was good though. Also, the vegetables were just frozen and microwaved. The rice and mashed potatoes had 0 flavor too. So I've been to Mike's twice since and it has disappointed :( The French onion soup is super salty, and the shrimp are against rubbery and overcooked. The most diappointing aspect was the kid's pizza. It's was the smallest pizza I've ever see , and it tasted worse. If the food was decent, I wouldn't mind the $100 bill, but do yourself a favor; skip the crowds and go elsewhere. read more

Visiting friends and found this gem ... nice rustic place ... good beer selection. Steamers as an app were incredibly good. Chowder was thick and creamy with a rich flavor. Mikes has become a tradition in my family. The food is amazing. I always get their clam chowder. It tastes the same every single time and the clams are a good size. I usually order their linguini with Alfredo. It's a big enough portion for two meals. I am giving them four stars because they typically have long wait times, and high prices. read more

Surprisingly disappointed. The breading for the seafood platter I ordered was falling off the the haddock, scallops-everything. The breading looked more like a breadcrumb base than a flour base. I'm not saying it was a bad thing exactly- but the breading was seasoned and that took away from the natural flavors of the seafood which was cooked well (minus the shrimp that was over cooked). It was extremely greasy and I was disappointed that at least take out wise they give you packaged from Ken's and various over mass produced tartar/cocktail sauce. Their take out is packaged poorly with nothing to soak up the grease so the container was dripping and grease, as well as made everything soggy. The haddock fell apart when we tried to pick it up. The 'shacked' potatoes were flavorless. The seafood chowder was bland as well. The seafood cooked perfectly but just no flavor. I wasn't a fan of this place because of the seasoned breading, poorly drained seafood, lack of home made dipping sauces and bland chowder. The $24 seafood platter was pretty pricey for the amount of seafood received- they fill it up with onion rings, potato and cole slaw to look like a alot of food-just not seafood. read more

We ate here the day we pulled into town. We sat in the bar, tables were set at a good distance from each other. We chose to get the Lobster Bake. The corn on the cob was old but it's December. Didn't expect anything more. Cole slaw and baked potato were lost due to how delicious the cup of clam chowder was and the great lobster. Thanks for another good meal. The waitress Keri was terrible, she was miserable the entire time, rude to us, told my 9 year old that he's in a restaurant because he had a toy Whoopi cushion with him. It is a very popular spot for the senior crowd. Not for this senior though. We went here for dinner on Wednesday night. Haven't been here for about 7 years, the parking lot was packed. The staff was pleasant and friendly. Although they clearly were short staffed (and I say this because even though there was a 15 minute wait, there were at least 4 tables open.) Two of the tables had six chairs and could of sat 7. I say this because the group behind us asked if they could seat 7 and were told no. We ordered 2 French onion soups. We both looked at each other after the first taste. Just a step above dark brown water with next to no taste. Finally at the bottom I said, I think this may be French onion soup. The sides of Brussel sprouts were again no taste. Looked like they never hit a grill or oven. Just blanched and had the plastic butter square sitting on top. I had a side of potato salad called white potato salad. That wasn't bad. My clam cakes were good but most likely frozen and fried. My wife had steak tips. She said the were average good. We decided to skip dessert because you can only take so much disappointment. read more

We saw Mike's as we were driving toward the resort where we're staying for the next week and when we were checking in Alan asked our host about it and received a resounding recommendation. We were expecting a long wait for dinner on a Friday night, so we showed up around 6:00 and were very surprised to be seated immediately at a table for 4. Even the traffic on Route 1 was cooperative w/ our left turn to head north. The restaurant is large, as is the parking lot. The menu is extensive and there are many choices. Alan had several dishes he was considering, but I narrowed it down pretty quickly to the Half and Half, haddock and scallops, baked or broiled. It would come w/ two sides and I could add a small salad for $4.95. Our server, Maxie, brought us water to drink and I decided to have a glass of Lobster Reef Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand. I consulted w/ Maxie about the difference between baked or broiled and he explained that the baked was topped w/ Ritz cracker crumbs and was delicious. For my side I wanted the vegetable of the day, which was baby carrots or butternut squash. When I hesitated he said I could have half and half, which was perfect. While we were waiting to order Alan noticed a man at an adjacent table receiving a fisherman's platter and it looked so good he decided to have it. It had fried shrimp, whole belly clams, calamari, haddock and scallops as well as fries, coleslaw and onion rings. My salad came first and it was quite generous, w/ blue cheese dressing on the side. It was fresh and tasty, the lettuce crisp, cherry tomatoes flavorful, croutons, cheese, sliced cucumber, green pepper and a little bit of red onion. It was easily enough to share w/ Alan. My wine came next and it was an astonishingly generous pour. When our mains were served they were similarly generous, w/ Alan's being magnitudes larger than mine. We gave each other tastes and everything was good. The onion rings were plentiful and good, so good that Alan didn't even touch his fries and didn't finish his haddock. He commented that it was the best fisherman's platter he'd ever had and the onion rings were among the best. I had a bunch of them and agree they were great. He was less impressed w/ the coleslaw, taking one bite. My dish was delicious and I finished it. Both vegetables came w/ a small container of butter which I didn't use. My favorite was the squash, but the carrots were good too. We'd certainly return to Mike's to explore the menu further. read more

To be blunt, I can't make a proper review, as my meal was steamed whole lobsters. However, I will say that they were properly cooked (not too done, not too under). The great part was the clam chowder, as for a lunch special it's only $3 for a cup. I would definitely give this place a shot, especially if you're wanting a quick lobster fix :) read more

Again this place didn't disappoint. Saw a bunch of bad reviews before going and was nervous but hasn't changed. Great food and service. If you were worried about your safety during the pandemic maybe don't go out to eat, and if your kids are disrupting others during their meal and you can't control them, then get take out. Don't leave a business a bad review based off of these things, it's not fair to them . Review their food and staff. I've been here every time I come to Wells (which is a lot) and have yet to have a bad experience. read more
