If you are looking for nostalgia, historic buildings or just good food, I highly recommend stopping at Mike's on Main while in Hendersonville, NC. The 50s-style diner opens early for breakfast and switches to the lunch menu at 11am. Justus Pharmacy occupied the building from 1890 to 1993. Then the building was renovated to Mike's on Main. I loved that it still has the pharmacy feel, and that they kept the Apothecary neon sign out front, the 1890's ceiling, the 1920s mosaic floor tile, the 1930's fountain bar with bar stools, a juke box, old cash registers, a vintage "Drugs & Lunch" sign in the back, and apothecary bottles. Outside the building is a Coca-Cola mural painted in 1905. It's amazing to think that author Thomas Wolfe used to hang out at this very soda fountain back in the day! I arrived right around 11:00 AM while the breakfast menus were still out. Although the Eggs Benedict looked highly tempting, I ultimately went with the egg salad on toasted sourdough. It was a generous portion, topped with fresh lettuce and tomato, served with a bag of chips and a pickle. You could immediately tell the egg salad was completely homemade and fresh. I also treated myself to an old-fashioned ice cream soda with chocolate ice cream, which was absolutely delicious! I enjoyed my lunch immensely, and the lively, retro atmosphere made it even more fun. The entire staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming, even taking extra care to make sure I noticed all the historical decor spread throughout the space. First of all, this place is so fun. Old style soda fountain shop with burgers, hotdogs, french fries, floats and milkshakes. Service is outstanding. You can either go to the soda bar and order there or you can be seated wherever you want and they will come wait on you. Service is excellent, quick, and they do whatever you want. I love a good grilled cheese, so that's what I got. It had fries with it and both were excellent. They let you pick whichever cheese you want and the bread. My husband got a deluxe burger and the lemon chicken soup, which was outstanding. It's a great place to stop in when you're walking around Main Street and you just need a quick break for a soda or an ice cream. They're always playing really cool music and the vibe is just chill and very family oriented - definitely a lot of locals come here. Cool place with an old days appeal. No sign saying "wait to be seated" (which turns out it is) and when I asked "Lilly" a waitress was very snippy. Had a couple walk right past us to sit down. Had an absolutely amazing breakfast experience today at Mike's on Main in downtown Hendersonville! We snagged a spot on their outdoor patio, which was just lovely and added so much to the meal. Good grilled tuna and turkey melt..fresh fries. This is like old fashioned ice cream shop so menu has food that is of a grill type. The staff was all extremely freibdly...I felt so bad when I realized I did not leave more of a tip..gave only singles and thought one was a five. Came here on a Monday (holiday) for lunch. Seated ourselves and restaurant was busy. Server was very attentive but it took almost an hour to get our food. Server offered to compensate for that. We are visiting from out of town and not familiar with restaurants in this area. We stumbled across Mikes on Main from just exploring the downtown. Inside is a cute ambiance. Stopped by for Sunday lunch after a beautiful drive on the Blue Ridge Pkwy. Interested in outdoor seating since we had our doggie along. Wasn't expecting with a three star Yelp rating but this place pleasantly surprised us. Retro nostalgic atmosphere with an amazing milkshake menu. We popped in to Mike's for a quick lunch while visiting over Easter weekend. They weren't too crowded. The decor is old school - diner, and so are the employee's uniforms. Seating is open, and they have tables as well as booths. They had a surprisingly large menu. Since the milkshakes looks so appealing I opted for a salad for lunch. My salad was fresh and not lacking toppings. My extra thick vanilla shake was good, but next time I'd just get a regular shake - and share! The milkshakes are huge! I'm in town visiting for a couple of weeks and have walked down most mornings for breakfast. The wait staff has been excellent, the food prepared perfectly and priced fairly. I've had virtually no wait, even when they were slammed last Saturday. I've read some complaints about the 3.5% cc surcharge, all business are doing that now. Even the car dealership when I get service. The ones that aren't doing it have just raised their prices to include it. if it bothers you, go to the ATM and get some cash. read more

The food was good, but I am surprised at the tactics used to squeeze pennies from us. Upfront you should know that if you use a debit or credit card, there is a 3 1/2% charge. For our $30 breakfast total we were charged a dollar. OK. However my son ordered eggs bacon and two pancakes, along with hashbrowns. When the waitress was putting in the order, she called back to him at the other side of the restaurant to ask if he wanted blueberries in the pancakes. He said yes not knowing that they were going to add $1.50 to the bill. Not a lot of money, but the way it was done was not honest. Nickel and diming is a pet peeve of mine especially in times of high inflation so if you are going to do that, you need to make it very clear on the menu or you need to address it when you are taking the order. I am in the process of moving to Hendersonville from Charlotte. This bill was more expensive than what I would pay in Charlotte for a simple breakfast. It looks like something straight out of the 50s, with the little booths and the counter with stools, and ice cream floats, etc. The decor consists of many items from the 50s and 60s (before my time, but fun to look at). Absolute worst service I've ever had in my entire life! I'm 54 years old I eat out every single day and the two young "kids" (One named Noah and the other boy about the same age but didn't get his name) were absolutely awful! I've never been treated so terribly in a restaurant. He delivered a patty melt when I indeed ordered a Reuben and I haven't eaten beef like that in forever. I told him I ordered a Reuben he argued with me brought me a Reuben and then told me that he was charging me for all three sandwiches when indeed it was his mistake to begin with. Stopped in during the Apple festival to get a bite to eat. The hostess outside was very nice and suggested some top items on the menu when asked. Came in and sat at the counter. It took about 5 minutes or so for someone to come over and acknowledge me and my mother, and we were about to walk out because multiple workers walked by, never made contact or smiled, it was like we were invisible. Another red head waiter finally came up and asked if we had been helped. We split the turkey bacon and cheese sandwich on sourdough with fries, which was plenty and ordered a sweet tea.
