WORTH THE HYPE!!! As an avid foodie, this place has been on my list for a while. When I was visiting my friend this weekend in Southie, I got my chance!! As you walk towards the North End of Boston (aka the "Little Italy" of the city, but don't try to call it that), you are greeted with the intoxicating aroma of starch - what I can only assume is homemade pasta in the making. Mike's Pastry is on the left side of the street, right past Modern Pastry on the right (also on my list...maybe next time). Both places had lines out the door. Although I cannot speak for Modern, Mike's line moved pretty quickly. Once we were inside, pictures of each of their cannolis and their names were on the wall, giving me more time to debate which one to choose from before reaching the counter. There were many employees behind the counter, making it easy to make my way through the throng of people to find someone. The staff is you classic Italian family - the woman who got my cannolis cracked me up as she was telling me about her daughters (who also work there) and their boy problems. It reminded me of my own family! I ordered the Amaretto cannoli for myself and took home three for my family: the peanut butter, the espresso, and the chocolate chip. I got them all with powdered sugar (sugar on top of sugar? I think YES!!). The Amaretto barely made it out of the store. As soon as I got outside, I began to devour. The cannoli was HUGE and LOADED with ricotta. The filling in this one tasted like it was infused with amaretto, giving it a nutty and distinct taste that I found delicious. The shell was soft and crunchy at the same time, and I loved the hint of chocolate from the drizzle. My friend likes their lobster claws, which are apparently pretty popular here. I tried some of hers (which was also GIGANTIC), and it reminded me of a cream puff - flaky, doughy pastry with a sweet cream filling. Verrrry delicious and light! Mike's definitely lived up to my expectations, which were pretty high. I am a total foodie and this place is a foodie's paradise! I walked in to a super crowded room with cases displaying the most decadent looking desserts I have ever seen! They were massive, too! We stop at Mike's just about every time we are in Boston. While I would agree that it can be difficult to know what you want when you get to the front of the line, I will engage the employees in a friendly conversation if I have any questions. When I am friendly with them, they give the same in return. All bakeries have their specialties that you go for. We go to Mike's for cannolis, lobster tails, and the gold cupcakes. Really you can't go wrong with anything you order. I absolutely love their cakes. I drive from Maine every year for my birthday to pick up my birthday cake because there is just something special about their chocolate fudge and ganache. read more

Delicious cannolis from Mike's - a must stop in Boston! We swung by after lunch in the North End and while I'm very much glad we did, the ordering process is very chaotic. The line is unclear, they are cash only, and it's hard to breathe/move inside the shop. That being said, it's clear the staff works hard and is knowledgeable. They were so efficient and speedy when packing our 6 cannolis up! I'm glad we got to stop by and bring back treats to Seattle. I feel like this place is a must if you're visiting Boston. Seems like everybody comes here because there was a line out the door. Don't get discouraged though because they're pretty efficient. I think I only waited about 15 minutes. Mike's is famous for its cannolis so I decided to try a few of them. They're definitely not cheap at about $4-6 each, but they're huge. I tried the ricotta, the florentine, and the expresso with the florentine being the pricier out of the three (probably because it uses a different cannoli shell than the others). The florentine was probably my favorite out of the three as well. If you prefer simple flavors, the ricotta is a good option. What I liked about Mike's is that their cannolis weren't overly sweet. They're also super fresh so you should eat them as soon as you get them. I did manage to transport some back to CA and Mike's packaging survived my flight home. Although the shell wasn't as flaky by the time I got home, they still tasted great. Just a heads up, TSA had to inspect my box, but they just peered into the box from the sides. read more

I stopped here not even knowing that this was a thing in Boston. I walked by and it looked great so I walked in. Luckily I had cash on me since this place is all cash. Whenever I go to a bakery one of the things I always love is if they have a lobster tail. It's one of my favorite pastries, and while this place is known for its cannoli I really wanted the lobster tail. It was huge, bigger than my hand, a bit expensive at $7 but the size made it worth it as one was like buying two. I also got a Boston cream puff because when you're in Boston you have to get Boston cream something. Anyway the Boston cream puff was amazing and coated in hardened dipped dark chocolate on the outside with a flaky light pastry and the custard inside was not too sweet. I really appreciate that because When it's not so sweet you can really taste the custard more. But the lobster tail was the star. First of all, the filling was excellent. It was creamy and cool and just the right amount of sweet, but the pastry itself was what really set it apart. There were really crunchy pieces in certain parts near the bottom and sides of the lobster roll and those crunchy pieces mixed with the creamy filling were some thing I can still taste and wish I was close enough to get another one. Luckily I go to Boston for work every month or two so I know what I'll be getting next time I go for work. I'm already dreaming about that lobster tail and the crunchy outside of the pastry and the creamy filling. I cannot wait. read more

Since I was in Boston I was on a mission to find a good Boston cream pie. Mike's pastry is definitely a well-known institution offering a great variety of treats. Pricing is fair, staff is very friendly, and it's located in a great area. When we came it wasn't too busy so after a few minutes of reviewing the menu easily got our order in. We actually came back after dinner and the line wasn't too bad. There were many cannoli flavor options as well as other pastry items for sale. We went with the Pistachio, Oreo and Nutella cannolis. The cannolis were all fresh and a pretty decent size. We enjoyed tasting all of them. They all had the familiar cannoli crunch of the shell with the inside creamy goodness. We were visiting Boston this weekend and I was told these were a must try. the line wasn't too busy when we went on Sunday afternoon but I could imagine it gets hectic. Ordering was a bit difficult but the the girl behind the counter was very patient. We ordered the chocolate chip cannoli, Boston cream pie and an eclair. The cannoli was the best I've ever had. I can see why it's a Boston staple. The packaging is so cute with the string too. I took it all over downtown Boston and ate it night and it was still delicious. We trucked over here after eating pizza up the street. The lines are long but move quickly. Apparently they are known for their cannoli but they have a nice variety of sweets including cupcakes, cake and cookies. The vanilla cupcake was delicious! Holy cannoli, I'd forgotten how large these cannolis are since the last time I was here a couple of years ago!! At first, I wondered why each cannoli was $4, but after putting my hands on one, I realized why. Each one is about the size of my fist! I ordered the espresso cannoli this time, although I remember really enjoying the chocholate chip cannoli the last time I was here. I appreciate that the cannoli shell maintains its crunchy fried texture even though they are prefilled with cream. I'm not sure how well they maintain overnight though. Go not during peak time because this is a huge tourist attraction that gets super busy. The line does move fast though. The ordering system is pretty chaotic - after your wait in a line outside you enter into a mob of people trying to order from one of the many people behind the counter. The pastries are organized in a U around the store so you have people wandering all over to pick out what they want. Yes it's touristy but definitely a must visit when in Boston! Is it worth the wait? Mostly yes. For me, if the line is past the first restaurant that they're next to, I won't wait only because I've been many, many times. But if it's your first time in Boston, then definitely worth the wait. Remember, cash only! They have a million different flavors of cannolis but I stay tried and true to the ricotta and choc chip, pistachio if I'm feel adventurous. The cannoli shells are perfectly fried and filled to the edges with cream. They also hold up well and are still delicious the next day, doesn't get terribly soggy. One of my favorite pastry shop to recommend, especially if someone has a sweet tooth. Food I've tried: (* = my favorite) - CANNOLI*: their cannolis are simply heavenly. The shells are crispy, and the ricotta cream is rich and not overly sweet. I tried my first cannoli from Mike's Pastry, and I have been living in a different world since. - LOBSTER TAIL: I find this one a bit more overwhelming. The outer shell is very, very tough and sharp at times. There is powder sugar on top that puffs up, so I made a big mess as I was trying to share this food. The inner cream is rich and sweet, but personally I could have done with less cream. Just because this one is a bit harder to eat and I think there is less of a balance between the outer shell & cream, I prefer the cannoli. Atmosphere: - There are multiple chains, most of them do not have sitting areas. - Usually it is extremely crowded, and the line goes out the door. Service: - Staff are courteous and service is quick especially during the busier times. Overall: - PRO: delicious decadent dessert.
