Overpriced, overwhelming amount of people, overhyped. But the one thing I can't be over is that cheddar biscuit breakfast sandwich. That sandwich alone is worth five stars. To be honest, it's worth around $15 dollars. That's insane, but I'm crazy. Crazy enough to buy it. The food isn't anything wonderful. I'm not really impressed with the joint. None of the other breakfast things I've ever had were impressive, I'd say below par. And for the price, a rip off. Back to the breakfast sandwich though. Best breakfast sandwich I've had in Brooklyn. Food: good, but there isn't a lot of it if you're hungry. Service wasn't the best, but also not the worst. I'm not sure why it's marked as good for kids because they don't even have high chairs and the tables are small so little hands can reach everything. The noise level is incredible, which makes this place a poor choice for elderly. Also, if you have Edison bulbs and offer wifi, you're just being obnoxious by not taking credit cards and writing it in small print on the menu. read more

I was there with my husband expecting a good brunch. Price was not that bad (compared to other 'hip' brunch spots) but actual dish reflects that. Menus are fairly simple and it's a small portion. The food here is good. I'm not going to argue that. It doesn't blow me away with creativity or originality, but for what they offer its well prepared. It's also infuriatingly overpriced for such simple dishes and small portions. Maybe it's not their fault, maybe the rents in Brooklyn are forcing well-meaning cafes to charge more than your average person wants to pay, even for average food. Or, it's a trend of cafes trying to convince Brooklynites that their food is special by slapping on a high price and sprinkling paprika over the top. Either way, I think the only way to try and buck this trend is to not give places like that our dollars. Demand more, go to other spots that offer reasonable prices or outstanding food, like Btwxtd Cafe right down the road. Then again, those Australian accents ARE hot. read more

I've been coming here for 6 years or more, I honestly can't remember. The food is always delicious no doubt about that. If however you get food to go you should always check it before you leave. Over the course of my time coming there there have been several times where ingredients were missing. When that ingredient is a 3 dollar piece of bacon or some salmon it can get pretty annoying and when you live 5 avenues away not worth going back for. Perhaps its just the state of the world right now but I felt like standing up for right not to get cheated for 3 dollar strips of bacon this time. I made the return journey (after eating the sandwich, so I had the strength for the trip). 6 years of eating here I honestly didn't expect any attitude from any of the staff here ever. I explained what happened and rather then an apology I got what felt like a sense of disgust over the very idea of my presence asking for what was mine. The waitress who only an hour earlier was so bubbly and apologetic for the earlier putting the wrong order in by mistake now greeted me with same attitude i get from hospital administrators or civil servants. I have real big boy problems, so I try to let the little inconveniences in life roll of my back, but when I get disrespected for simply asking for whats mine after they failed to get an order of 2 egg sandwiches wrong not one but twice well then I yelp. read more

I used to live in this hood and come here all the time. The food is awesome! My favorite is the plain eggs with advocating added. I get the half then add an extra egg. The almond milk lattes are my favorite drink. The 'iced' coffee is AMAZING!!!! Not sure if they changed this, yet it used to come with ice cream in it. So YUMMY! Breakfast is my favorite meal. And yet, when it comes to brunch...that more free-flowing and sometimes alcoholic half-breed sibling of breakfast, I have to admit my heart grows fonder for this little midday pleasure. Milk Bar serves a hearty breakfast that can turn into a brunch oh-so-easily. My poached eggs wobbled gently on top of tomatoes and cheese on a hearty slab of bread. It was very good. While this brunch did not demand alcohol, I did have an Arnold Palmer. One of the best iced-tea and lemonade combinations I've had in a while. It tasted like the end of summer, bright but bittersweet. Maybe I should also mention the coffee? It's awesome. The service was a little scattered, but it was pleasant and we weren't rushed at all. the guy who runs this place is incredibly rude. the two times I went there for coffee, he outright insulted both my girlfriend and myself to our faces. I don't get it... are we supposed to think it's witty? cute? It's not either. If you're going to open a place in the neighborhood, it might be a good idea to try being neighborly. I'm glad she was able to convince me to give it a shot as we were thoroughly pleased. Despite the myriad of negative reviews concerning the food and staff I found it to be quite the contrary. Some of these reviewers are out of their trees if they think the food isn't good, the staff rude, and menu overpriced. It's always nice to be sat within 5 minutes on a Saturday at 11am. Who wants to wait in-line (not on-line, what's up with that NY?) for 26 dollar eggs and arugula? Not me. We hadn't seen the menu beforehand but decided quickly. We went with a cappuccino, OJ (Freshly Squeezed) Vegetarian eggs, and Cheddar biscuit breakfast sandwich, and added extra avocado where applicable. The cheddar biscuit was so good in fact, we ordered a second (don't skimp on the extra Aioli. Our waitress was so sweet and accommodating that it made our already fantastic experience even better. Milk Bar is a solid place for breakfast/brunch or just plain lounging with a coffee and if you're into those Australian rapscallions, this is the place for you! *The more I thought about it some of the other reviewers brought up a good point about the pricing. Although far from a piggy bank breaker, some of their substitutions are grossly overpriced. The difference between 'Full Plain eggs' and 'Full Vegetarian eggs" is a 3 dollar slice of cheese. Enjoy!! It's like $2 extra to add bacon to your avocado toast, and you only get ONE THIN LITTLE BURNT slice.. I'd rather sneak in my own thick cut turkey bacon haha. I'm a little shocked that this place does not have higher overall reviews. It is definitely a breakfast/brunch spot. I have not tried their lunch because the menu choices do not look appetizing or appealing. I always order the Vegetarian Eggs with Avocado. The eggs are perfectly poached and the combination of the sourdough, tomato and cheese is filling, very fresh and dare I say sophisticated and French? It is a perfect stop en route to or coming from Prospect Park (on bike). I just think it is one of those unassuming, but high quality, local, neighborhood breakfast/brunch spots that should be commended. read more

A good review for Milk Bar is long over-due. I love this place-- it's been such a fabulous addition to Vanderbilt Ave. Good, strong coffee-- Counter Culture, in fact. And last time I looked, they were pouring the milk from Battenkill Cremery bottles. Yum. Get the Full Eggs if you're a fan of perfectly poached eggs over thick country toast. It has ham, melty gruyere, and tomatoes to boot. You can add avocado if you want to be really decadent. And if you're not into a giant breakfast, you can get a half-order. "Half Full Eggs" I suppose. Who knew Australians had this whole breakfast thing down pat? I walked past someone eating a frittata on my way in there today, and that looked really good too. I'll try that if I can ever talk myself out of the Full Eggs. Alex and Sabrina, the owners, and the peeps who work there are all so great. I'm pretty picky when it comes to iced coffee, but it's strong, and doesn't taste too watered down if I rest the cup on my desk for 10 minutes. Brilliant. My only gripe is that they don't have larger cups. It's a one size deal. This may have to do with the fact that they use "Greenware". So I feel kind of like an asshole for complaining. Great breakfast is not uncommon in Brooklyn. You can throw a rock in any direction and hit 5 places that can poach eggs with their eyes closed. This would be one of those places. That being said, the reason I felt compelled to throw out a kudos to Milk Bar is due mostly impart to our awesome server - perfect blend of suggestions, wit, sarcasm, and beverage refilling. "A" plus to you guy! As for food, I order the Turkey Ciabatta and drooled through the entire sandwich. It's a bit greasy, so if that's not your thing, perhaps go with the salmon sandwich (ordered by my friend who left a satisfied customer). FYI, no free refills on coffee (huh?) and, AND you can't order sides of bacon. I'm not sure if this is a forgivable offense as a breakfasty/coffee house-esque establishment. When we asked, our dude said it's because the owners didn't want the place to be like a diner, but a "coffee house that sells food". I get the whole vibe thing, but make that statement by not having checkered tablecloths rather than not offering the greatest thing to ever sit next to an egg. I love Milk Bar. Yes, it does get crowded, but I've never had to wait that long. I always bring friends and share the salmon eggs with avocado, which is honestly more than enough for two people for $17. I also get the cafe au lait (even though that might not be on the menu...can't remember) and it's delicious. I leave having spent about $12 including tip, which is not outrageous for a nice meal served by nice people in a nice atmosphere. Just fyi: they only take cash. read more

I had brunch here not too long ago. Cute little spot, with awesome bright natural light filtering through the many windows. My companion found the coffee a bit too acidic for his taste. I ordered the sausage gravy and biscuits. I added a poached egg on top for an addition $1.50. The biscuit was delicious, but the sausage was unacceptably flavorless. Big no no. The sausage was crumbly and appeared house made, but again it was complete without flavor. Once I piled on the hot sauce, salt and pepper, I really enjoyed my meal. But the sausage was very disappointing. My companion had one of the sandwiches. I like how you have the option of a half order. Perfect sense. For some reason no place I go can ever make this right. It's always filled to the top with milk, has one measly shot of sub par espresso and some weak foam on top. So imagine my surprise when the owner hands me a deep, dark, frothy cup of iced goodness topped with chocolate. Perfection! The coffee was strong but not bitter, the milk was properly frothed...yum. I dream about them now! Granted this place isn't cheap but the coffee is grea,t the food is well prepared (nibbling on a jalapeno & jack muffin as I write this) and different for our little neighborhood. If you are a fan of that craptastic bitter swill Starbucks calls coffee then you probably won't like it here. Cute place, great location. Sadly, that doesn't seal the deal. Our meal was only "eh". The smoked chicken salad has a weird taste and mysterious apple-like crunchy things in it that are not described on the menu. Beware kids won't feel super welcome as there are no high chairs and god forbid you have a stroller because there is no space for it (can't really complain about the later since it's just a tight space, except that I felt like a pariah trying to find a spot to stash it, even folded). Note, however, this is a positive if you want a kid-free cup of coffee in a neighborhood generally overrun by kids. read more

I'm a little tardy in reviewing Milk Bar because I've been coming here for the better part of a year, maybe more. There aren't enough adjectives to describe this place. Me and the staff are like peas in a pod since I've joined my wordsmith brethren and have my days free. I live about ... hold on ... (walks there and back) fifteen steps from this place and it is one of the things that keep me madly in love with my neighborhood. The coffee is impeccable and from the sound of the exotic blends and beans they get the owners seem to travel the globe in search of the perfect brew. Let's talk food for a minute, shall we? Normally I shy away from sandwiches in a coffee shop. I don't go to the theater for back rubs either if you know what I mean. But Milk Bar is also a reliable lunch spot because of their sandwiches, croissants and salads. It is bright and inviting. A perfect place to while away an afternoon working on your novel or screenplay in the sun, without the hassles of outdoor seating. (They do have outdoor seating as well) Great people, good coffee. It's dangerous to bring a meat eater to a vegetarian restaurant. They have a chip on their shoulder and they're primed for disappointment. When the food delivers it's a great feeling of victory for vegetarians everywhere, but that wasn't the case at Milk Bar. I love the atmosphere here. I loved the casual service. I wanted to like this place much more than I did. I love the look of it and had been wanting to give it a try. Overall, the food was rather bland...nothing really spectacular about it and it is served with minimal fanfare. Coffee was great. We went down to Milk Bar for a late Saturday brunch with a bunch of Australians looking for some home grub. The meat eaters all ordered the pie which was fairly small and flat. Don't order the cous cous salad (vegetarian) it had zero flavor and we had to ask for dressing. I got the Fattoush salad (vegetarian) it was better but $12 dollars is a bit much for bowl full of mostly arugula. Service wise can't complain about time everything came out super fast but we had a not so friendly waiter - sorry mate but you were grumpy! I suspect that this is more of a breakfast place not a lunch place so try and get there early and get your face into the eggs that everyone raves about. I was really excited to find Milk Bar in my search for a WiFi spot to work from this morning but I don't think I'll ever visit again. I ordered a Macchiato with Soy Milk and that little shot-in-a-mug tasted horrible. Fortunately, and to my delight, the Avocado Salsa Toast was delicious. The downer for me was that after working in the same spot for a couple hours, a trio walks into the restaurant looking for a place to sit and the waitress, Hayley had the nerve to ask me to move so they could sit in my place. The tables were filled but I'm not sure why she didn't go to other people to ask them to move or let the guests know that there would be a wait. She did come and ask if she had disappointed me and tried to explain how that is the ideal spot for four people, but it wasn't arranged that way when I sat there, so I'm not convinced of her explanation. I was a bit hesitant to try this place as it is far different than the usual neighborhood spots, however my boyfriend and I went in. The layout is nice and has a laid back cafe feel to it. Their menu was the perfect size and everything sounded appetizing. I got the Salami baguette and it was delicious! $9 which may be a bit high, but the ingredients are good and fresh and I left full. If some more hipsters move into the area I could see this place becoming too "cool" and unappetizing, but for now, good! read more

Meeting my friend in Park Slope, I has expected Milk Bar to be more of a "coffee shop environment." I was pleased to find that my grumbling-belly could be tamed by the menu! A girl cannot turn down poached eggs and avocado on whole wheat toast. Surprisingly, the coffee was probably my least favorite feature of the meal! I would truly recommend going with something along the lines of a latte unless you're okay with your basic brew. I absolutely love this place! I normally am in the area when I drop off goodies I bake to my brother. I then have time to kill time before work. I like to treat myself to a solo breakfast. I had searched this place out and I was not disappointed. The decor is very modern and I love the signature shade of blue. It's almost a modern Swedish style shop. I ordered a cortado and a avocado toast with a poached egg. They let me sit anywhere I wanted. I decided to sit close to the door for the light breeze and people watching. The refilled my water plenty of times. And I didn't have to wait too long for my order. Everything tasted just the way I wanted and it was the perfect amount before I walked to work. I love the use of avocado as the glue and the perfect runny, poached egg. I have continued to visit and have always been happy when I left.
