If you're looking for something simple - quality coffee and a sensible breakfast - good. Understated... but overpriced. Eggs come soft poached or scrambled on top of a fat slice of solid multigrain/brioche/sourdough. But prices start at $6 before you even start adding on avocado or bacon at $2-3 each. Yes, that toast might be cut thick but... really? Coffee too. The Counter Culture beans are brewed just right, but then sold by the mugful (no refills!) I guess the price you're paying is for a bright and clean atmosphere and maybe a bit of people watching. Portions are just right, and the food here is satisfying. I love this place-- the reason it gets a 3 star and not a 5 is because : - the place has no outlets. So not for students/if you want to work...which I always want to do. - a bit overpriced....$9 for half a sandwich with toast and adding avocados costs $3 more for half a sandwich! Let me go buy an avocado from the neighborhood grocery and just cut half of that up! -cash only I had their salmon on toast with pickled shallots and and a poached egg and it was delicious. The poached egg was perfection and topped with dill. The coffee was strong and comes in beautiful blue ceramic cups. Great place for brunchy-brunch but if you are on your own, it's totally ok. The service was great. The girl serving me was gorgeous, sweet, and came to refill at perfect times, and even checked to see if the one guy sitting near an outlet was going to leave. I can fully sympathize with pain in the ass customers, but really not a great idea to let your other waiting customers in on your frustrations. Before we got our table at the quaint (meaning tiny) Milk bar, the host/server/owner(?) whispers to my friend, "Oh my god that table was a nightmare. They were so messy, if I ever see them again I'll tell them they can't eat here." Note to self: be neat or get some sass! This is a lovely corner cafe that offers a haven within the haven known as Vanderbilt Avenue in Brooklyn. With free Wi-Fi and fresh, minimalist decor against a backdrop of some classic 80s pop, this is a happy place to study or meet over a cup of coffee. They have some fancy coffee drinks that drip with chocolate and great brunch menu items. I ordered the Bircher Muesli which is a hefty bowl combo of fresh apples, raisins, fruit-infused oats, Greek yogurt and a sprinkle of almonds. What a way to rev up your digestive system. The aussies have turned this little corner spot into a fantastic, small, multi-level space incorporating small tables, a family style table, and bar seating at the window, as well as outside seating. It's beautifully done with nice use of wood and steel and some choice focus pieces. Then they go about designing a simple cafe menu including delicious toasties served with iced coffee that only the Vietnamese can beat in NYC. It's all good. I don't know why it's getting some one-star reviews. The prices are not particularly cheap and certainly cheaper can be found in the nieghbourhood but it's nice to have the Milk Bar option on Vanderbilt and I wish the owners every success. read more

I was such a sucker for Milk Bar's menu. Scrambled truffle eggs on toast topped with avocado? Hearty, non-greasy breakfast sandwiches? Delicious iced lattes? Throw in the casual Santa Monica ambiance with adorable dogs milling outside the breezy windows, and you officially reeled me in hook, line, and sinker. Then you slapped me with with your prices ($10 for said eggs and avocado on toast as small as a child's palm and $4.50 for said latte) and absurd wait times (ONE HOUR for a meal for one, paid for with cash, seated TWO FEET away from the cashier)... and then you officially broke up with me. In my opinion, there are other fish in the sea (i.e. other brunch places on Vanderbilt) that are way worth my time and money than this one. read more

Ok, i have gone here a few times now and feel that I can give it a fair review now. Firstly, it is a great cafe that offers great coffee, and good food. The decor is also quite stream-lined, modern and comfortable. Yup, this is AUstralian owned and having lived in Sydney for a bit, i am glad more Aussie coffee shops are opening all over Brooklyn. Aussies just know how to make a great cup of coffee and serve up a solid brunch/lunch - runny eggs, and perfectly cooked brunch meats....and they also keep a great decor. It seems that the owner is a flirt (mentioned in previous posts)...well, good, that should keep some American men on guard. I would say he is just being a friendly Australian. and American guys (who really are from the midwest anyway) should chill out. I like the playful aussie banter and humor. Stumbled onto this place walking down Vanderbilt on a beautiful sunday morning after being disappointed in the lack of a food truck rally. My friends and I were seated next to their open window for optimal people watching during our lazy sunday. My girlfriend, after reading previous reviews, decided on the flat white to drink. I should have followed suit, as it was delicious even for a black coffee drinker. We split the a full portion of their poached egg breakfasts, and that was enough to fill us both. If you're thinking about skimping on the avacados, don't; they take the breakfast to the next level, and I feel the meal would have been a little bland without them, hence the 4 stars. Any one who gives this place less than four stars is out of their mind. Came here one day when we were staying in prospect heights because I needed strong coffee and free wifi. Milk bar had both and more. The coffee is phenomenal. My cappuccino was simultaneously strong and creamy good. I got the vegetarian eggs which were really great. The tomato on that sandwich was one of the tastiest I've ever had. Overall really awesome spot to sit down and have breakfast and get some work done. Woohoo! Delicious! Taking off a star because it's cramped and the wait time can be a bit lengthy if you time it wrong... but... yum. First, let's discuss the coffee. Great, A+. The waiter explained how the preparation of Australian coffee differs from American coffee and why it's better, but I don't remember the reasons -- I just remember it tasted smooth, rich and wonderful. I tried the "flat white" and it was excellent. I'd honestly go back just for the coffee. For my food, I had the truffled scrambled eggs with avocado, which was delicious. The truffle wasn't overpowering, but was a nice enhancement to standard scrambled eggs. Adding avocado was interesting and tasty as well. It was all served on a slice of thick, delicious toast. The portion wasn't huge, but it was certainly enough, and I didn't leave hungry. The price was also reasonable, which I always appreciate -- I think the whole meal came to less than $15 with a fancy coffee beverage. The server also gave us time to enjoy a leisurely meal, relax and hang out, and didn't rush us out even though there were people waiting, which I appreciated. My roommate and I had lunch at Milk Bar one time. We elected to eat outdoors which was cozy at first, but the proximity of the tables made us feel like we were dining with the other 8 people outside, as one big group. The food was not bad, hence the two stars. The coffee drinks, however, were overpriced. The waiter seemed pretty great at first, but it turned out we had three waiters during or meal. We waited about 15 minutes for the food, and ate it in less than 10. Instead of a "can I get you anything else?" the waiter slammed our bill on the table. Guess we didn't realize it was only a 20 minute parking zone. They clearly were trying to get us out so the hungry mob could get their 20 minutes too. read more

I've been here 4 times, and had inconsistent food so hence the 3 stars. The service has always been pleasant and friendly - and the coffee/espresso drinks are good (although the latter is very very strong). Sometimes the fresh delicious bread makes a perfect toastie - but today (and it was not busy yet) mine was ice-cold. Sadly a hot egg on a cold toastie is a sad thing. My girlfriend has the potato-egg thing and it was totally over-cooked and dry. An Australian inspired cafe-eatery where you can order to-go or dine-in: serving caffe lattes, panini all day for lunch; brunch and selected days for dinner. Very unlikely can Milk Bar put Prospect Heights in the food map. But Milk Bar has its own interpretation on what it wants to be and how it fits uniquely in the less-chartered neighborhood. The brunch menu is simple and straightforward: toasted artisan countryside sourdoughs with poached eggs; fruit granola parfait; ciabatta sandwiches; fresh salad; over-the-counter pastries and cafe varieties. Very practical and basic--nothing on the brunch menu requires intense cooking over the stove top--at least not for Brunch.
