The reason this place gets a 5 star review is because with the mega groceries stores that have taken over our planet this place still gives our species hope for the small neighborhood markets. They truly live up to their "Mill Valley Market" name, which, I guess the meaning goes without saying but I am going to say it anyways, is that they are that "local market". You know the one whole food tries to be? You go in and everyone who works there is friendly and willing to help. I would imagine if I went in there everyday I would even have some "Bob's" and "Kathy's" to say hello to. Best, least expensive hot food bar in Marin. You can get a freshly made, nutritious, yummy lunch for less than you would pay for junk at a fast food joint. MVM puts Whole Foods and Mollie Stones to shame. The checker is a little rude, but I don't mind. They always have great kale and other interesting, well thought out salads and a chicken or fish dish. Unfortunately I had a really bad experience with the service. I went there to buy a bottle of champagne - I was getting ready to ask my girlfriend to marry me and wanted something special. I was ready to drop $400 on a great bottle. I guess because I am not pretentious and wasn't pretending to have lots of money (as is the custom in MV), but the guy brushed me off repeatedly. He was helping a couple buy some wine - I said no problem I'll wait. He told me to go talk to the guy at the counter. When I explained what I was looking for he said he didn't know much about champagne and I should talk to the other guy. I went back and waited. When he finished with the couple there was no one else around, so I thought great - this guy will help me out. He didn't care that I was proposing to my girlfriend - he couldn't get me out of there quick enough and was pretty rude. A nice little market you would expect more, especially when I was in there every week for a year. If you live close by and know what you want and don't mind paying a little more for it, then by all means go here. This is definately my go to market. Even though they are smaller in size than most markets, and I have to drive out of the way, they have everything you need. Their seafood, meats and poultry are top of the line and their veggies and fruits are all fresh and better tasting than other local markets. Their hot dishes out class whole food by a mile. Specifically their Beef Stew is the best I have ever had and I am a big fan of comfort food. You can tell that the beef cubes come from their meat counter( the best in Mill Valley) since they are large and extremely tender and favorable. The rest of the dish consists of potatoes and carrots with a rich gravy just as it should be. I would eat it every day if I didn't scoop up the gravy with half a loaf of Acme French bread. If you are a fan of this dish you must try it unless there is only 1 serving left and I am standing next to you. read more

This is a delightful small supermarket. I especially like the salad dressings, variety, and people. The Sacred Chocolate they sell is interesting and special. The del meati has nice people working there, Marie the manager is a delight, great service, great attitude, high quality, and a liquor store next to the deli that has probably more European beers and Asian beers than most places I've ever been. There's a reason we affectionately call it the "Mill Valley Markup" - because it is so unbelievably expensive. Everything is probably 50c to a buck more than what you'd find elsewhere. However you get what you pay for. This market has high quality goods and a great selection of stuff to choose from. I highly recommend the deli too. Anytime I am in MV, I stop and get one of their excellent deli sandwiches, or their homemade soups. The tomato bisque is one of the best I have ever had. The wine selection is awesome too - I never fail to find an interesting bottle to try there. The help is great - the wine guys are knowledgeable, and the cashiers are friendly too. read more

And everything just looks so good&healthy, and it really isn't that expensive for what you get. People just seem very happy at the market, which definitely puts me in a good mood. MV market is great people, great service and great food and grocery items and now a deli that enhances what is already good about MV Market. Meats department is good quality and deli is fair to hogh, but food is good and fresh. Their pricing can go up against anyone, and their quality is great. Beware of maggots .... I've been a long time customer of this establishment until this recent food contamination incident and the way I was treated by the "manager".... I was eating the meatballs and then I felt something different in my mouth , I pulled it out and it was a MAGGOT, not to be confused with anything else or even questionable . I even have pictures. I called in to let the market to let them know about this so that they would pull the contaminated food off the salad bar and so others didn't have the same experience .... but I went in right after and they were still there . The chef was very kind and very apologetic...Then the store manager came out .... this is where bad went to worse. I have never felt so belittled and spoken down to , In front of a full line of customers. As he held and squished the guts of the maggot he said it was impossible , that it was rice or something like that.... I was lucky enough to at least get my money back for the 20$ salad box , there was NO apology , not a "I'm sorry this happened " ... what I got from him was , "this world is full of mysteries , this is one of them." I will never ever step foot in this market again and have told all my family and friends that live in mill valley and southern Marin how much management at mill valley market value their good paying customers, they don't. Stick with whole foods and food earth, "mysteries" do happen but at least they will get rid of maggot contaminated food when there is a customer complaint and not rudely question a customer and continue to sell it . Shopped here many years ago and left the area for the East Coast. Finally moved back home to CA and Mill Valley and, the best part, the Mill Valley Market. The quality of the food in all departments is great and everyone who works there is friendly and helpful. It feels like family. I'm not a fan of big stores and do as much of my shopping at Mom and Pop stores. Love this store. I'm always amazed at the obscure offerings and it's one stop shopping for me. read more

Still a fan of the deli. Love how you can order ahead of time online now so it's ready by the time you get there. HOWEVER, it kind of defeats the purpose cuz they have these punch cards now and only the sandwich makers are allowed to stamp the card (one star less cuz of this). So even if your sandwich is ready, you have to wait to get your card stamped. I wish they would allow the cashiers to stamp the cards instead. It would be quicker, especially since I only have a half hour lunch break & every minute counts. read more

I love MVM as much as I hate Whole Paycheck. The small, cramped aisles make me feel like I am in the NYC again, except here the cashiers are actually friendly, nice and have well groomed nails allowing them to actually work. Oh, and they aren't yelling across to their friends in the next aisle while you stand there waiting. Oh, and the food is great here. Nice selection of alterna-grub (for me that means brands that look fancy and are not part of Kraft, Post etc., yet.) Best part of the MVM, In my opinion, is the sandwich deli, bar (place, or whatever they call it.). Be sure to grab a number (there is a little red, number giver thing hidden on the support beam near the counter.) Then grab one of the sandwich sheets and write what you want. I always get cheese (swiss), avocado, lettuce, tomato, onion, salt, pepper and jalapeno with dutch crunch. Yum. They give you this weird mint with the sandwich, but I have never eaten it (I always distrust those free mints.) Oh, and the second best part is that the deli counter is conveniently located in the wine shop and beer alley. Starts the weekend off right. read more

So I don't know why this business is being listed separately from the supermarket section, but I am compelled to say that Mill Valley is blessed to have two excellent wine shops, of which this is one. Compared to the other shop right across the street, Mill Valley Market excels in great value. The selection is not vast, though having several hundred labels on the shelf at any given time, but each of the bottles got there for a good reason. Even their inexpensive wines for $5 are quite drinkable (ok, most of the time) but their true strength is in bringing value in the $10-$25 bottles. Go straight to Marcie and Skip and they will talk about the wines as if they were their children. Also, Mill Valley Market often purchases wines from auctions, restaurants and collectors, and they often have extraordinary vintage wines for excellent prices. I have bought a bottle of 1983 Chateau Mouton for $100, and 1962 Chateau Cos d'Estournel for $65 in the past few years. Some of the rare finds were 1967 Louis Martini Carbernet Sauvignon, and more recently 1984 Carmenet Cabernet Sauvignon for less than $50. Yumm... Liquor selection is very good as well, and are usually reasonably priced. Skip is particularly knowledgeable in this department. Go, and go often. Tell them I sent you there. read more

Great deli, great wine selection, great produce, and great seafood/meat department. Buying produce and here makes one realize how bad the produce at Safeway is. I recently bought both the best Ahi Tuna and the best green beans I've ever had there. The down side is that it's pretty spendy. But, the sandwich prices are reasonable for the quality. read more
