Their baked salmon dip is very yummy. Everyone in these is very nice. I really really like this place. I am back in Mill Valley every now and again (usually when the Moe-T-Psycho is in the shop) and there is Solar Pizza (tempting, and tasty), or Pearl's (Among the best of burgers with a KILLER shake selection), or sandwiches at the Mill Valley Market. The Mill Valley Market almost always wins! 1. Tasty sandwiches and fresh ingredients. The only thing lacking IMO is using actual cooked chicken breast in the chicken breast sandwiches. Aside from that, everything is just dame tasty! The specials are usually order up for me. 2. They got some great shopping here on the side. Some fine root beers, interesting selection of ice creams (oh yeah), and home made bagel dogs! Heeeeyo! 3. I can take my sandwich and eat in the center square (wedge really) surrounded by redwood trees (almost minus a star for all the spandex... but really, it's kind of funny). 4. When all is said and done, I can head over to Cici Gelato on the way out and get ACTUAL mint leaf in my mint gelato! YAY! For extra credit, stopping by the Library first can be nice... great park nearby the library and just a great place to read. So... Mill Valley Market is a gem among gems IMO. Even though my family has been patronizing Mill Valley Market since before I was born, I must admit that during the 80's I really hated the place. Not because of the market itself, but because of the yuppies who had all flocked to Mill Valley... Fortunately, the "in crowd" has now moved on to Whole Foods and Mill Valley Market has gone back to being a local store that caters to the varied population of Mill Valley... I'm sure many of the folks one sees in the aisles have been shopping there for longer than I've been around. Although the prices are a bit higher than at the major store chains in the area, none of them have a quality meat counter with full-service butchers or a deli counter that not only has sandwiches and salads, but also a wide enough assortment of hot entrees that you could actually cater a decent dinner party based on what you can get there. (Not exactly the selection you would find at M&S in England, but it is pretty darn good considering the amount of space they have.) They also have a catering department, but I have not had reason to patronize them yet. Though their produce section is small, they have a good assortment and do a good job at stocking locally grown organic products. (Unlike some of the other stores who leave a huge carbon footprint by trucking all of their products in from central distribution centers miles away.) Often I have found the quality and selection of their produce to be better than "Whole Paycheck." Important to me, they also stock both Clover and Straus Family Creamery dairy products. In a nutshell, they pack a large assortment of quality products in a small space. The staff is exceptionally friendly and helpful. Pretty much everyone on the staff has been working there for years and they all work very hard at getting to know their customers. We always get a hello and a big smile from everyone. Unlike the big chains, they still provide carry-out service - if they were a gas station, they'd still pump your gas, clean your windshield, check your oil and tire pressure... You will not find a better deli counter for fresh sandwiches. We stop by every weekend, order a sandwich and take it on a picnic. Made to order sandwiches, fresh, delicious. I can be fussy and I usually don't like to try new things. However, I'm pretty confident when it comes to ordering whatever special sandwich they have on the Special board. It only took one visit for me to really enjoy my Mill Valley Market experience and deem that it merits top ratings. It's a small sized market compared to Costco and Whole Foods, sure. But it's a nice sized space packed with organic and imported foods. We found both European and Middle Eastern inspired ingredients, as well as all the staples and classics you would need for everyday cooking. It's organized nicely, has a deli and plenty of beautiful fruits and vegetables. I personally prefer smaller sized markets that carry foreign and organic options--but there is a price ($$$) to pay, of course. Overall, it's worth it for some good quality groceries. I only joined Yelp so I could review this market. We've lived in MV for 11 years or so, and from the beginning, this has been my favorite market EVER. Reminds me a bit of the small market in the town where I grew up. Family owned and operated, they support the town's schools GENEROUSLY for which I am grateful. The variety of food is amazing; the wine and beer selection outstanding. We belong to the wine club and every month get 2 bottles of some surprise wine chosen for us. They have lots of great bargain wines in addition to the special occasion wines. Everyone who works here is wonderful. We were all saddened by the passing this year of Jim Canepa, the long time owner. His family continues to carry on operations in grand style. And they were just fine with my daughter and a friend setting up a lemonade stand in front of the store a few years back. read more

I was in Mill Valley for a wedding being held at the Outdoor Art Club. We needed a quick lunch nearby, and walked over to the Market. The deli is fantastic! Not necessariily the best service, but they were polite and the tuna salad was some of the best I've had! $6.50 for a pretty decent sized sandwich with all the fixings. I enjoyed that I was also able to get a small (2oz?) bottle of champagne from the fridge (it was a wedding after all). Delicious lunch - and benches right outside where we were able to sit and enjoy the scenery while we ate. Recently while in Chicago on business, I needed groceries delivered to an ill family member in Belvedere. I called two nearby markets only to be told my delivery request was impossible. Still, I figured there must be a way. So, from Chicago, I called the Mill Valley Market and ended up on the phone with the owner. I grew up with this place as my family market, but as a penniless adult, I can no longer afford $12 mustard. However, I work a mere three blocks from this haven of specialty foods and on occasion, actually shop for groceries there as opposed to get my usual deli sandwich or Sonoma Salad-to-go (This is a great salad, folks.) I had an inkling that the butcher counter rocked, not only because they gave me free hot dogs when I was 5 years old, but because it's where my dad buys really complicated cuts of meat that need all kinds of chef-esque things done to them. So when I needed a big chunk of pancetta, and even Whole Foods couldn't help me out, I wandered down the road to the MVM. Not only will the young, noticeably attractive butcher answer all of your stupid questions, they'll actually chop things up just the way you want them. I guess this is standard butcher shop protocol, but the only butcher I've ever known is Harriet from So I Married an Axe Murderer, so I thought this kind of service was a thing of the past. A woman came in wanting one turkey breast. The practically chopped up an entire turkey just for her. I wouldn't have been surprised had they killed one in front of us, just to ensure freshness. So pleased and proud was I of my big hunk of pancetta wrapped perfectly in butcher paper, I wandered over to the produce section where every tomato and every grape looks like its right out of a Donna Hay photograph. It was all I could do to stop myself from buying some homemade pesto or fresh duck stock or spiced cumquat chutney. If you get there early enough, Mill Valley Market has the best donuts in Marin (OK, they're delivered fresh from a large bakery in the city, but they're faaaaar better than any of the other donuts to be had in all of Marin!). Of course, the king of all donuts is still in San Bruno at Rolling Pin on San Bruno Ave and a close second from Dream Fluff at College and Ashby in Berkeley, but MV Market comes in first in Marin. Been shopping here for 35 years now. I have watched the Canepa boys and family members grow from busy boys helping their dad - they grew into competent men running a first rate business. I watched as they adapted to the new Whole Foods movement that came to town years ago. They have always held their own; the quality of the offerings is like no other. Today I stopped by for a cold bottle of wine and some take out dinner from the incredible prepared food selection. It not only looks divine and delicious, IT IS! I enjoy the real feel of the local store I have shopped in for years, but know what I take home will be delicious! Good fresh food, produce, meats, beer and wine! While a bit pricey, it was devoured over a couple of days, well worth the $$. I like this market too! I went in a couple of months ago looking for some lunch, and got very confused, I could not find, and thought there was not, a prepared foods section. Well, to my surprise about a week ago, they have a great big prepared foods, with a sandwich guy, and the made-on-site-you-heat-up stuff, the hot bar, I think a salad bar... everything I could possibly want for many, many meals.
