I think this might be my first 5 star review. The wine selection was extensive. I had the wine flight #1 which is a tasting of three wines. I thought it would be a third of a pour at most but what arrived was three glasses of 1/2 pour each! I was so surprised. Loved sampling multiple tastes. Discovered the delicious Belle Glos Las Alturas pinot noir. The aroma alone will bowl you over. Deliciously buttery, spicy notes, chocolate So good! Salt and pepper calamari was good. The standout in that dish was the aioli. Didn't have enough for the dish. Calamari cooked spot on. Although it wasn't a standout dish. Hazelnut and morel crusted scallops were the best I've ever tasted. Cooked perfectly. The shaved Brussels sprout hash with bacon raisins and pear paired perfectly with the scallops. Made me swoon with each bite to the end. Wagyu strip steak was the special of the night and it was fantastic. Simple preparation for an incredible piece of designer beef. Perfectly cooked to medium. The only slightly not-perfect part of the evening would be the server Jason . We ordered the steak medium but I would have appreciated the server educating us and recommend medium rare or rare knowing the type of meat it was. It was still delicious When asked which wine would pair well, he didn't have a clear recommendation. Just pointed at the Reds. He did recommend the las Alturas because it was his favorite and we choose that one because we love pinots. Wished our waiter was more engaging and offered more insight into the food and wine. This is a place that wants to be a high end restaurant, but honestly, they'd be better off as a Tavern. They seem to push their steaks, but they are nothing special. For steaks at that price, you are better off at Capital Grill where the overall food, service and drinks are better. Mill's Tavern overcooks their steaks and the drinks are just ok. "Tavern" is a bit of a misnomer; this place is one of the more upscale restaurants in the area! They offer the typical 'fancy restaurant' fare: duck, pork loin, shellfish, sirloin, and a few creative-looking pasta dishes. My duck ($28) was perfectly cooked, and the patty of rillettes that came with it also had a beautiful crust. I only wish the dish had some more vegetables on it besides a few sprouts and a little pile of slaw to break up the rich, salty meat; by the end, I was practically lapping up the prickly pear gastrique to get something vegetal. Basically, the protein was magnificent, but I think the dish could have been a little more balanced and thoughtful. I felt the same way about the desserts ($9). The creme brûlée was excellent and had a thick, crackly crust--a mark of a good pastry chef. But the garnish of two rock-hard gingerbread cookies was awkward to look at and to eat. Similarly, the warm chocolate cake was exactly as decadent as you would expect, but the creme anglaise and chocolate cookie crumbles on the rest of the plate were sort of an afterthought. I'm being picky because I think that with a little extra effort, Mill's Tavern could put out some truly surprising, technically great dishes to match its flawless service and decor. The prix fixe is a great value: $30 for an appetizer, entree, and dessert. You can choose from three options for each, and, unlike some restaurants, they don't obviously limit you to the cheapest and least appealing dishes. However, watch out: no prix fixe on Saturdays! read more

What disappointment to go back to what you thought was a great experience and have those memories dashed. Food is good, very good. Service is attentive and very very good - even the busboy staff smiles, checks in with you and is super friendly. So why the low score? We made reservations for 5:45. We got there early and we were escorted to a nice table. But, there was a nicer one right next to it, a bit cozier. So we asked if we could move the - to our surprise we got let me ask. The young lady comes back and says no, now there are at least a 6-9 tables of two open, and says we need to be out by 7:45 and that table is needed for a 6 reservation and needs to be out at 8. Really? Ok its Waterfire it gets busy. So the 6pm reservation get seated at 5:45, which was our reservation time. We ended our meal and left at 7, they at 7:15. and, this gets me, the table for 4-6 booth - they sit two in it at 6:30. They were busy but had plenty of room, someone as not thinking or made a decision we were not worth it. So treating us poorly resulted in no bottle of wine, no apps and no dessert - and no going back. The front desk staff should al be talked with about how to make the first experience a great experience. To many good restaurants that get this, maybe some slow nights and they will figure that out. Lovely! Would absolutely go back! We stopped in on our food tour of Providence. So far, I would say the best! I had a couple of cocktails, the "Mixed Feelings" being one of them. It was original and tasty. Katie and Tom, the bar tenders were delightful and knowledgeable of drinks and of the area. Very underwhelmed by this restaurant. Went last night for Christmas Eve with 2 others. Service was not good as we waited quite a while for a server to take our order for drinks. Food was just okay, but for the price it was extremely lousy. I had the ham dinner, which actually came out cold. When I flagged down the server, they came and got it and must've put it in the microwave and returned it to me like no big deal. When you're paying $35 for an entree, it better not come out cold. Also, my old fashion drink was basically just a whiskey on the rocks. Place is not worth it at all. Don't waste your time. read more

I really enjoyed Mills Tavern. They have a great atmosphere going on with the dark wood and the swanky feel. I also loved the open kitchen and looking at the wood grill! The food was excellent. We did the Prix Fixe which is the BOMB. We got an app, entree, and dessert for $30. Say what? Yes I am serious. I got the calamari which was good and the ole bay sauce was interesting in a good way. My sister got the risotto and what a treat that was! For the mains she got the seafood dish and when I say dish I mean huge bowl of all kinds of delicious seafood! I was very happy with my duck breast however the salad it came with was sort of blah. Dessert were the chocolate dessert and the orange blossom mousse. Both were great! This place impressed me. We stopped by the Mill's Tavern on a Tuesday evening for some oysters and drinks. Their special offers $1 oysters, littlenecks and shrimp during Happy Hour. The bar chairs were wobbly, uncomfortable and need to be updated. Other than this one, measly complaint my experience was wonderful. I loved the restaurant décor - a sort of mad men feel to it. Large windows, dim light, perfectly pressed linen on tables and stone accents. The service was top notch. The bartender was friendly, attentive but not overbearing. My drinks were perfect and I am very picky about my martinis/manhattans. The food was superb. Best part of an already good experience. Oysters, already shucked, were fresh and served with three sauces - cocktail sauce, and two vinegar based sauces, one spicy and one sweet. Large shrimp was cooked perfectly, chilled and snapped when bitten into. Littlenecks were served with the same three sauces as the oysters. I believe the restaurant has valley parking, but when I pulled up the valet guy was looking down at his phone and either did not see me or chose not to see me. Granted they, had a service bartender too but the bartender was excellent. His name is Luiz. Mill's never disappoints.. delicious food, stellar service, and great ambiance. Don't wait for a birthday or anniversary to go here for dinner, just get there and enjoy their seasonal menus. This time around, I got the short rib over braised kale and polenta with an Italian salsa verde. As one would expect, the short rib pulled apart easily with just a fork. Any meal you get here is an 'eye roll into the back your head' experience. Some dishes come with sides, others you can order a la carte, they're definitely big enough to share. The service is great regardless of anyone you may have. It's better to make reservations, especially during Restaurant Week (a great time to experience multiple courses for a reduced price). Valet can get bogged down if they're only running with two people. The street becomes a cluster with people waiting for valet, if you're impatient, there are places to park on the surrounding blocks. read more

This was my first time at Mill's Tavern, and I don't have a pre-pandemic reference point. The ambience is perfect for a romantic date night with dark wood, ambient lighting and immaculate decoration. The service was friendly, prompt and attentive. The appetizer calamari was perfect, with a hint of spice, crisp and lightly battered, accompanied by micro greens and cracked peppercorn. I ordered a filet mignon with red bliss potatoes and shallots. The filet was tasty but slightly over-seasoned and salty. My filet (medium) was cooked well but my fellow diner's filet (medium rare) was under-cooked. The sauce which accompanied the filet was underwhelming. The red bliss hash was cooked well but, like the filet, the seasoning was a little off and was overly salty. Overall I am very complimentary of the ambience, the safety protocols in place, and the service, but the food fell slightly short of our expectations as good but not great which is where I deducted a star. Mills Tavern was my absolute favorite restaurant 15 years ago when we lived in the area. When we visited Providence this fall, we decided to go for old times' sake. My husband ordered a wagyu ribeye that was not actually wagyu, and I got a short rib dish that was stringy and served with a peach sauce that was overly sweet. We had an oyster and caviar appetizer that was amazing, but a calamari one that was a big mound of grease. The server was wonderful and it's as cozy as ever, but the food was not to the level we remembered. It also didn't seem as special as it used to be -- on one side we had a group of 3 wearing sweatpants, smelling of weed and bumping into our table so hard as to spill red wine all over the tablecloth. On the other side was a mother with her teenage son who was wearing basketball shorts. Just not the upscale vibe it used to have. There are too many other amazing restaurants in Providence, so next time we'll skip this one. (Sadly.) read more

Such a DELICIOUS experience here!! I would definitely give it 4.5 stars, if I could! My friend and I decided to go here for dinner on a whim, so we showed up literally a hot mess. I was essentially wearing hot pants and my friend was in her beaten-up flip-flops and my hair was still semi-wet from showering. However, the host was very nice and immediately sat us without a single dirty look (elegantly putting our napkins in our laps as we inexplicably got tangled in our jackets and attempted to pull ourselves together). Our waiter was super friendly and very attentive throughout the whole meal! We both got the prix-fixed menu for $30 each, which ended up being a great decision! We both started with a lobster risotto, which was very tasty! My only complaint was that it was vastly under-seasoned. This was not a problem at all for the rest of the meal, and nothing a heavy dose of salt couldn't fix though! After going at it with the salt/pepper shakers, the risotto was actually really delicious (the peas were so fresh-tasting and there were hunks of lobster- YUM)! For the entree, my friend got the flat-iron steak, which was perfectly cooked and sooo flavorful (it got that charred flavor that just enhanced the taste of the meat without overpowering it- perfect!). I got the swordfish, which was served on top of the loveliest mushroom-sauce concoction. Both dishes were wonderfully executed and I would order both of them again in a heartbeat! For dessert, I got the seasonal sorbets. Usually, I'm a chocolate-girl all the way, but I went a little crazy with the bread in the beginning (by the way, the waiter did ask us if we wanted more bread, but he promptly gave us more when we said yes without a problem!). I usually sniff at sorbets for dessert, but this one was so refreshing and tasty that I might start ordering sorbets more often! It came with 3 pretty-generous- sized scoops of lemon, black raspberry and (I think) red raspberry or strawberry sorbets with little toasted crisps. Each bite was like a burst of flavor and I savored the entire thing! What really surprised me though, is that my friend got panna cotta, which I usually dislike, and it was super good!! It came with some sort of basil ice-cream and strawberries, and it was not bland at all! SO GOOD (and the presentation was also really tasteful as well!)! To top it all off, when we left, the host was not at his desk, so we just slipped out (taking a handful of the wonderful chocolate-covered mints...). However, just as we got onto the sidewalk, the host actually dashed outside after us, just to wish us a good night and thank us for coming in! Anyway, I haven't had that good of a dining experience (trying a new restaurant anyway) in Providence for a long time and this was such a great one! I want to go back for dinner again tomorrow!! Fabulous spot in quaint, downtown Providence. As we approached we were pleasantly surprised with the complimentary valet parking. Then greeted by friendly hostess that sat us in our cozy table near the bar. We started with two different oysters that were accompanied by three different sauces-they were fresh, cold and divine. We then shared a wonderful Ceasar Salad with white anchovies. We both opted for seafood entrees; I had swordfish with a cajun sauce and my GF had halibut on a bed of asian noodles. What a perfect Saturday night out, when we arrived the Free valet was right out front the restaurant had an elegant casual look. We were quickly greeted and offered to be seated immediately but we chose to go to bar (good choice) where we had martinis and absolutely perfect shrimp and oysters. When we sat for dinner we started with fois gras that was done perfectly. The salad (cobb a must have and a really unique look) and steak to follow where also fantastic. We finished with coffee drinks and dessert (panacotta) that didn't disappoint. Everything from the wine to the perfect service was top notch. We arrived at 7:30 for a 8:30 reservation and sat at our table until after 11:00 we were never rushed and we felt completely 100% satisfied with our evening. read more

My boyfriend and I both really wanted to like Mill's Tavern, but we were, unfortunately, pretty disappointed. The service is fantastic and so is the ambiance. Parking is also pretty easy to find on the street, and they also have a valet service. We go out for a nice dinner only 1-2 times a year. We decided on Mill's for Valentine's Day based off of impeccable reviews from family. I got the rack of lamb and my boyfriend decided on the wagyu sirloin with mac and cheese. We shared the nutella ganache for dessert. I was really disappointed with the lamb dish. There was very little meat on the bone and the taste was just so-so. The mashed potatoes were pretty good but the green beans were bland. My boyfriend wasn't impressed with the steak dish either. Neither one of us are really picky eaters but for the amount we spent on dinner ($140) we expected a better experience. We'd love to give Mill's another chance, but, unfortunately, on our budget we'll be going somewhere else for a nice dinner out. read more

My first visit impressions are mixed. Located on North Main Street in the college hill section of town, parking is a bit of a challenge if you do not use the valet service. Enter the restaurant and we were greeted by welcoming members of the staff who checked us in as we headed to meet our party -who were seated at the bar. The drink menu included libations which were both unique and delicious. Unfortunately, service did not meet upscale expectations. The restaurant is beautifully maintained and appears to seat about 50 comfortably. The menu includes items from sea to farm -which made it difficult to choose as all were described so well. Again, the service fell short as our appetizer (both oysters and little necks were served in the same vessel) was delivered, but without any communication as to the origin of the oysters or the differentiation of the little necks. While the main course was plentiful and good tasting, the waiter distanced himself and had no assurance we were satisfied. A greeting by the manager (expected to maintain the brand) was also missing from the menu. My assessment: good, but needs polish. read more

Being a fan of going to nicer restaurants, I only expect the best food paired with the best service. The only reason I'm giving this place 2 stars is because their food was indeed delicious. We got their Wagu steak, NY prime, scallops, Risotto and tons of appetizers and desert. Their seasonal choices are great. The current autumn menu was diverse and impressive. However, the service was not impressive at all. Even getting bread on our table and drinks took about 25 minutes. Appetizers came out but the oysters were wrong so it took another 20 minutes to get the correct order. The entrees then took another 20 minutes to get once they finally cleared up our tables. Waitress was nice but slow and not attentive. We ended up wasting over 2 hours at the restaurant just for appetizers, entrees, and desert. Finally at desert time they came out with it at an appropriate time. We did make a small complaint so they gave us a small drink each but being that our total was over $300, we just expected a little more urgency and attention. I hosted a birthday party dinner at Mill's Tavern for my wife. Everyone had high hopes and the ambiance was great. However, the food was really sub-par and the service was questionable at times. Various people ordered appetizers. The only tasty dish was the calamari. The salads had an odd savory taste and several people were turned off by the taste. The main courses were OK. The steak/lamb were overdone, gnocchi was just not prepared well, and the starch stick that came with the halibut was interesting. We really wanted to like the food but it just wasn't quiet right. I have been putting this review off for awhile, b/c it pains me to write it, as I believe it sums up the overall failure of restaurants in providence to really live up to the status of "fine dining." if this is the best the city has to offer (its amateur hour all day, everyday), I find it very sad that locals dont demand more for their money. Made reservations for an important birthday dinner here (my own, ahem) two weeks in advance for a party of 4. we arrive a few minutes early. there is a table of about 15 there already that is also being seated. ok, fine. from there, the experience spirals into extreme disappointment. we order our apps of oysters. just oysters and drinks, nothing that would merit a laborious preparation. fine. we wait. and wait.... and wait.... note to the staff here: you have a HUGE party and a small party. the huge party is obviously not in a hurry as may be indicated by their sheer number it is a social dinner. the other single party of 4 should NEVER have to wait for all 82398497892 other people in the large party to be served first. this makes no sense whatsoever and it never happens at other restaurants with comparable price points (at least not without warning, explanation, or comps of some kind). if you cant handle the volume, HIRE MORE STAFF or dont book the reservation in the first place. we were patient for the first half hour, but then we asked repeatedly what was taking so long. "soon, soon, soon..." ok so AN HOUR AND 15 MINUTES LATER, our oysters arrive. *sigh* fine ok ok. in the meantime we had put in our order for our entrees. we were asking questions about the entrees and tried to order more drinks, and here's the ass kicker: THE WAITER WALKED AWAY WHILE WE TRIED TO ORDER MORE DRINKS. walked-a-fucking-way. I tried to surpress my "how dare you" since I was in good company, but you do NOT disrespect the people who are paying your undeserved tip when they are trying to order drinks. walk away from me? bitch, you are lucky I was feeling generous, b/c I would have stiffed your ass a tip for that alone. nevertheless, we were all smiles, my company was graceful enough to feign patience for my benefit, but I could tell they were offended. another 45 minutes after our oysters we inquired again about our main course. it took another full hour for them to arrive. now, if the food had been OMG spectacular earth-shattering mouthgasm inducing delicious, all would have been forgiven. I ordered my filet european rare (basically cold, still moo-ing, etc.) so I was pleased. but I only found out the day AFTER (again, my dinner companions were too polite to mention at the time) that all the other entrees were COLD. to spend upwards of $500 for cold food? ignored and disrespected by the waitstaff? mortified from the embarrassment that I was responsible for selecting a place that caused my companions to suffer through such a drawn-out and ultimately unenjoyable meal? absolutely UNFORGIVABLE. no apologies were given, nor explanation, and nothing was comped. not even the exceptional bread pudding could save this place from the one star review. again, my experience here was so bad, I would never risk embarrassment by bringing anyone here EVER AGAIN. sadly, this exemplifies why providence is not currently a true player on the scene for fine dining in the northeast (even though we really SHOULD be, with all the resources, charisma and talent we have!) just think, would you ever be served cold food or ignored by waitstaff at a barbara lynch restaurant? I think not. for any TRUE experienced foodie, this place just reeks of amateur. that "rhode islanders are not cultured/ dont know any better" posturing as an excuse to be lazy and sloppy in both execution and service is completely unfounded and unacceptable. there simply aren't enough alternatives for fine dining in providence so we are forced to settle for what there is. sad... Mr. D'Oliveria might want to consider taking some tips from Lynch to see how the REAL pros do it and step up his game. the people of providence deserve better than this! read more

Mill's Tavern is definitely one of the best restaurants in Providence. The staff is very friendly and accommodating, the food and wine are delicious, and the ambiance is warm and classy. When we had to push back our reservation by 10 minutes, the staff was very kind. Because we were delayed we ended up being the last table to finish, but they did not rush us through our meal at all, and even encouraged us to order dessert. The food was very good. My scallops were cooked perfectly and went very well with the farro and chorizo cream sauce. My bf loved his rack of lamb, citing it one of the best meals he has eaten (I had a bite and agree it was excellent). The bottle of wine we ordered went well with everything (I don't think you are supposed to drink red wine with scallops, but it worked!). To top off a wonderful meal, we got the maple creme brûlée - one of the best creme brûlées I've ever had! I dined at Mill's Tavern with my mother and two of her friends on a Thursday night. It was a night when the restaurant was only about 3/4 full, so a good time to give them a try! We all agreed that the food was excellent. Well prepared, well presented, ample portions. The decor is a sophisticated mahogany and brick look and the servers are all polite and friendly. And yes Louise, the bathrooms are spotless! I had a very good size portion of Coriander and Flax Seed Crusted Ahi Tuna with Mango-Avocado Chutney, Fennel, Spinach and Carmelized Shallot Yuzu Vinaigrette. My mom ordered the Lemongrass Duck which I tasted and agreed was superb and her friends ordered swordfish and salmon. Dessert was a Warm Valrhona Chocolate Cake. I should also mention that the bar mixes excellent cosmopolitans! Because Mill's tavern is not inexpensive, I do focus on the little things more than at less upscale restaurants. Thus a few minor things that would need to be changed for me to bump the rating to a 5. First, when I waited tables (a hundred years ago) at the University Club in Providence, I learned that the salad fork goes outside of the dinner fork, so yes I notice... Second, the service was good but after we were seated, it took the waiter quite a while to stop by and during the meal the water was not re-filled as often as one would expect at a high end restaurant. Third, the entrance to the restaurant was not well lit and for someone like my mom who walks with a cane, it is quite difficult to maneuver, That said, the vallet parking staff was friendly and helpful. One star for a lovely atmosphere. Another star for a super nice server who really did her best. Now onto the rest. Seriously, how can you have a place with NOTHING for vegetarians? Are there none in Providence? What's going on, here? I was with a group of ten people and after looking at the menu and blanching at the complete lack of veggie-friendly items, was dreading my turn to order. I told our server that I was a vegetarian, and asked for the only item that I could see modifying enough to fit my needs. "Could I please get the pizza, but without the duck or the olives?" (Eh, I don't like olives. Shoot me.) "Ok, but it's not really a traditional pizza," the server replied. "There's no sauce or cheese, so you'd just be getting a piece of flatbread." My husband suggested I order the side of mac and cheese, but we were then told that the dish is made with bacon fat. After a few minutes of this I had to settle for the cheese plate, which consisted of four slivers of cheese and six pieces of melba toast. It was lovely, but not a meal unto itself. I also ordered a side of asparagus, which was very good, but had a smoky flavor that became too much after a few bites. I left hungry. Mill's Tavern is a great restaurant, but they really need to do something about expanding their menu so there are at least a couple options for those of us who don't want to eat meat. read more
