Must eat at restaurant in Laurel! I was visiting Laurel for a girls trip and just checked in to the Airbnb and we were starving. Yelp led us to The Loft and thank goodness we got there about 10 minutes before open because there was already a line down the sidewalk. We got in line and were seated right when the doors opened for dinner. I enjoyed the interior of the restaurant. It had a rustic vibe and a man playing the guitar and singing. The music was great but wished he was a little bit louder. The service was good and were in and out within about 1 hour and 15 minutes for dinner. I started with a cocktail - Stormy Laurel. I'm a suckered for any drink with elderflower and it was light and refreshing. The food was delicious! The house side salad was huge and the croutons were so good. I like that they provided plenty of salad dressing. I ordered the fried shrimp dinner with the loaded potato casserole. The shrimp were massive, there were so many, and they were seasoned well and breaded just the right amount. The potato casserole was yummy and had a slight kick which I appreciated. We also ordered the bread pudding for dessert. I liked the white chocolate chips throughout. Come here for a solid meal! I loved the food and atmosphere. We arrived at 4:45, they open at 5:00. We knew that there would be a line. We were the 2nd table seated. Several tables were seated before we ever saw our server, Charles. We ordered appetizers, crab claws and loaded fries. They came out fairly quick. The crab claws were very good. By the time the server came back, appetizers were gone and refills were needed. We placed our orders, creole shrimp pasta, I stupidly ordered the chicken parm, and the others (2) ordered the bone-in pork chops. The pork chops were amazing, creole pasta was delish, the chicken parm, was not my favorite. Then the wait to have him pick up the checks. It was forever. The whole experience was over 2 hours long. While the music was nice, the building is comfortable, Charles service was lacking. I understand part had to be a kitchen issue seeing how we were there when they opened. My husband decided to find the manager. She was a blonde woman(dont have a name). While my husband was talking to her explaining that this was our first and probably last time to dine here, the server came up and asked just what was the problem. We were so excited by your reviews (We are traveling from Dallas to Florida, and thought let's stop in Laurel as a midway point). I'm sorry to say it was a big disappointment. The house Salad wasn't crisp, the dressing was bottled, and the homemade croutons also resembled store bought. The Roxanne Fish did not come as described on the menu. We had dinner at The Loft during our weekend in Laurel. We had a reservation and were seated as soon as we arrived. It was busy since it was a Saturday night but the noise level wasn't overly loud. They also had a singer playing the guitar. Our server was friendly and attentive. My goal was to try a few different martinis and rate them! for appetizers we had Steak bites that melted in our mouths, Shrimp pizza which was delicious, Cheese wedges and potatoe casserole which were both good as well. My friend had the pork chop for an entree and raved about it. I had the Loft Burger which was cooked just right and so juicy. My husband and friend had Whiskey Sours which were good and strong. The Martinis I had were the Downtown Tini, Pink Starburst Martini and the Mary J Martini. My friend had a Cosmopolitan which she enjoyed. My favorite was the Downton with my least favorite the Pink Starburst because it was too sweet. We all had a great time and loved all the food. My wife and I traveled from an hour away to dine at the Loft, which came highly recommended to us. Our first bad experience was the 1hr and 20 min what to be seated. Secondly, we were seated in a hot, poorly air-conditioned area, which appeared to formerly be a patio area. Thirdly, it took an additional hour before our meals arrived to our tables. Once our meals arrived, over half of our dinner party's meals came out on cold plates with extremely cold pasta and under cooked steaks. This will not be a restaurant where we will be returning to. We Got there & there was a hour+ plate but we stayed because we had friends to drive in. Finally seated & out waiter was AMAZING!! The food. We were a party of 8 and we waited another hour for our food. The wife of one the couples pasta was cold. The wife of another couple loaded potatoes was cold. Finally my fiance ribeye was not well done. He sent it back and it was still not cooked like he ordered. The Other couple's food was warm. First, I want to be clear that what Laurel has done as a community to renew and revitalize their community is just amazing. We were really impressed with the business development and the overall congenial staff all over the town. That being said, The Loft was a big disappointment on multiple levels as compared to other restaurants in the area. First the good: the waitstaff was "nice" and the location / venue was really well appointed, beautiful antique bar, adequate seating, good volume on the live music (meaning that it isn't overwhelming), The baked potato casserole was excellent... and that's about it. The staff, while nice, are not trained at all in their duties. The hostess was disorganized, didn't acknowledge our party or the others behind us at all while we waited for quite a while to be seated: there was confusion about the reservation time and she didn't seem to understand the table diagram in front of her. There was no "Hi, I'll be right with you," or similar professional / polite way of sharing that they were busy. The waitress spoke so softly we had to ask her several times to speak louder (the venue is very loud just because there's nothing to absorb sound at all). The bar did not know how to make any drinks that were not on the menu and apparently couldn't look them up on their phones or a bar guide? The drinks that WERE on the menu were bland as was most of the food, indicating lower quality ingredients. The food came out of order: appetizers, quickly followed by entrees with salads completely forgotten until we asked for them (as another reviewer noted, the salad spring mix was served with shredded cheddar and boxed croutons - how is cheddar supposed to go with a vinegarette?). The dinner roll appeared to be a Sister Shubert or similar brand that wasn't heated up / warmed... and not served with butter. The dessert menu is limited to two items. The place is air conditioned to meat locker temperature with the ceiling fans set on "air down" instead of "air up", meaning you have cold air blowing down on you and your food. The shrimp scampi is a huge portion of frozen shrimp- you can tell because the only flavor is in the sauce, which is seasoned reasonably well, but completely runny. Really wanted to like the place but for the price, this venue needs to come a lot further: Start with getting a real restaurant consultant in there to train staff, train your line cooks and adjust the actual food quality to be above restaurant supply or Sam's Club frozen bulk. Wish y'all well, but if you're going to be a real steakhouse, you got to up your game. And get cloth napkins. Finally - I thought long and hard about posting a pic of the men's restroom, because it was BAD: I'm not going to do that, but there is NO excuse for it to be in the condition it was in at 6:00 pm on a weeknight. Since most of the town roles up the sidewalks at 5pm. This place is one of two or three that are open at night. Great location in a funky building. The food here is top-notch. Boss Lady and I eat at a couple of the local eateries, and this one was one of the better ones. She ordered the steak salad, (delicious) and I had the starter shrimp pizza. Both were tasty, although the pizza crust could have been crunchier. The bar drinks are good, and not too expensive. The live musician was good but couldn't hear him that well. 4 stars for food. 2 stars for service speed. 1 star for atmosphere. Former restaurant owner here and one of the establishments I owned happened to be a popular steak & prime rib house... The Loft has managed one aspect of the restaurant business well regarding the food quality. We've never had a bad steak at The Loft, nor a "bad" meal. However, first the bad... 1. Arrived this past Friday evening and immediately seated in an incredibly icy-cold dining room. Our guests along with my wife were freezing and went back to the car for sweaters and jackets. Owners must understand that part of the overall atmosphere, no pun intended, includes the temperature within the establishment. Every time we visit the air is too cold.... 2. It took an excessive amount of time before our server took our drink order, and from the time we ordered salads until their arrival was actually 1 hour and 5 minutes! I say that again...... ONE HOUR AND FIVE MINUTES before our salads arrived. Quality of the salads were good. Serving our dressing in a little plastic cup is BAD. 3. Our food arrived at 1 hour and 35 minutes. The server did come to the table with the salads and an advisement that there were two large parties / events that "pushed all the tickets back". As a former restaurant owner, the management must re-train staff and kitchen staff how to handle these types of situations. Needed to assign a chef/cook just to the party, and some cooks and or chef's to the regular crowd who are equally important. Just because you have a large party at peak hours of service does not give you a pass. Therefore, figure it out! 4. Although my wife ordered her steak medium-rare, it was medium to well done..... but because we waited over an hour and a half, she chose to eat it and not return it for a steak cooked the way she ordered it. 5. Previously I did a Yelp on what The Loft can do to improve the overall experience.... so here goes again... a. While you took my previous advice to serve soft butter and not butter fresh out of the freezer which made it impossible to spread.... you listened to the complaints and the butter was presented chilled but spreadable, and you listened when I, or others, advised to use a pastry bag and pipe it into the cut improving the presentation. The remaining flaw.... still serving the butter in a cheap plastic ramekin... cheapens the overall experience, invest in a proper porcelain ramekin for your butter, sour cream, salad dressings.... b. Silverware.... please please please management or owners... visit the Longhorn Steakhouse in Hattiesburg or even Outback and take note of their quality silverware. You purchased the cheapest flatware in the restaurant business, thus you cheapened the overall experience for us diners as well..... and, serve a Longhorn style steak knife with those steaks..... c. Your dinner plates belong in a dumpster, not on our tables! Because you serve the steak and shrimp, baked potato and veggie all on one tiny undersized plate, you stack the hot breaded shrimps on top of the hot and juicy steak.... saturating the breading on the shrimp.... For larger entrees such as the steak and shrimp dinners, the pasta dinners, need to plate the entrees on a large oval platter... steak enjoying its own space, shrimp should be placed on a lettuce leaf since you don't garnish, and this would leave space for the potato and or veggie.... improving the presentation greatly, now saturating the shrimp with steak juice, and making it easier for the diner to enjoy their meal..... larger plates, better presentation.... d. Are you trying to compete with your local diner or Denny's and Waffle House? Because you are doing a fine job of it when it comes to your table....... stop putting sugar packs on the table, and you need to add a real candle. e. Ok to keep the bistro feel of the white paper on top of the tables.... no issue there, but your cheap paper napkins certainly are on par with Waffle House. Linen napkins with the silverware wrapped inside would elevate the quality, the atmosphere and the overall experience... To sum it up.... Turn up the air, this is NOT Alaska. Provide quality flatware and steak knives.... Get rid of the table top condiments, sugars, creamers.... Add real candles or some type of cool lookalike that provides some atmosphere... Get rid of your cheap paper napkins.... Add linen napkins.... Add proper ramakins and stop serving butter and sour cream and dressings in small plastic cups.... Learn how to manage the cadence and timing of the order. Our server never returned to the table to inquire if everything was cooked to order and or ok, or if we needed anything. Train your staff on the sequence of delivering proper service which includes the proper level of communication with the table, and also have someone pre-bus..... when we are done with our plates someone needs to be on top of it and notice and begin the pre-bus process. we ordered drinks from the bar and were seated promptly. we ordered the cheese wedges and our entrees . the cheese wedges and salads came out promptly. the salad was well presented even though it was missing some of the items listed as ingredients. that was the first sign of things to come. following the service of our salad we waited 97 minutes for entrees to arrive. now, you might say " why didn't you just leave? " it certainly crossed our mind but each time we asked we were reassured our food was up next. soon we were to heavily invested to jump ship. we were told there was a large party ahead of us. this leads me to two recommendations; 1. don't over extend the capacity of your kitchen 2. let people know you are stretched and to expect a wait. give them the option to wait , offer a complimentary appetizer or dessert don't ignore the problem and consider yourself as higher end dining. oh yea, nice atmosphere! read more

We had a reservation for 6:00 pm, this past Saturday. We were visiting friends that recently moved to Laurel and they were very complimentary about The Loft with Service and Food. We were seated immediately and drink order taken. Our server was new, you could tell and they were trying their best. 20 minutes between drinks arriving and giving our order, followed by another 20 minutes before salads arrived, we had not been provided any silverware. Server went to get, 15 minutes go by and we actually stopped another server and asked if they could get silverware. Our server showed up with a handful of " To-Go cellophane wrapped" packs explaining that all of the silverware is dirty. We stopped the server and said, we are not paying 30.00 a piece on dinner to eat with plastic utensils. Server returned shortly with silverware, wrapped in a napkins. We did use the plastic to eat our salads. At 7:30 pm, we were sat at 6:00 pm, our entrees started arriving. 2 in our party had no food. When the server was told, they were not sure what happened. I was one of those 2 and 15 minutes later we both received what we ordered. The Shrimp was hot the fries were ice cold. one of us ordered the steak and Fettuccini Alfredo asking the steak be rare, arrived well, well, well done. When brought to servers attention, plate removed but nothing else offered and you would think someone in management would have questioned why the plate was being returned. At 8:15 pm we had asked for the check and waited, when some of the checks arrived, they were incorrect. Finally, the Manager came to our table and was apologetic and explained our server was new and first shift by themselves. The responsibility lay at the feet of the manager(s), as they or no one else checked with a brand new server was functioning. Not one time did anyone else come by our table or any other table this new server was responsible for. Met some business associates for dinner. They do not take reservations so you might want to arrive early or prep for a 30-40min wait. I had the fish special with blackened red fish and steamed veggies. The steamed veggies turned out to just be green beans but they were delicious. The fish was a nice portion and cooked perfectly. The staff was awesome! Every one of them was personable, had a great sense of humor, and our waitress was attentive in a just right way! While visiting Laurel, MS, The Loft came highly recommended by locals so we walked in the door with high expectations. Unfortunately it did not deliver on those expectations, not even close. We walked in about 10 minutes after they opened at 17:00 and were seated promptly. We ordered drinks and an appetizer first and we ordered entrees once our drinks arrived. Appetizer showed up about 20 minutes later so this put us at about 17:45. We sat there for another 30 minutes until we saw our sever again, with empty drinks and while watching other tables turn at least once, some of whom came in 10-15 minutes after us. Once we saw our sever we asked about food. She sad she'd have to check with the kitchen. I mentioned that we've watched tables around us turn already. She said, "sorry, that is how it goes sometimes". She walked away then came by a few minutes later to say we're number 3 on the list in the kitchen. Mind you, we've been there almost 90 minutes and watched multiple tables turn, some with 6 people and we were just a couple! I promptly asked for our entrees to be cancelled and she replied I'll just bus them up to go once they're done. OMG, really?!? I said no, please close us out and we will be leaving. She looked puzzled so had to say we would not be taking the food but would pay for what we had been served to that point. The Loft has been in Laurel for well over a decade but I have only visited 2-3 times before now. Several years ago I had dinner there and wasn't impressed. During the Christmas holidays I returned for dinner and am glad I did. The Loft is probably Laurels' nicest restaurant providing diners with an upscale feel with most entrees in the upper $teens to the low $30's. It's located in the downtown area with free street parking available. Usually you will have less than a 30 second walk wherever you find a parking spot. Inside the bar is on the left and separated by a wall from the main dining room on the right with the hostess stand in the middle. Off of the dining room is a covered outdoor patio for al fresco eating if desired. For my dinner I chose the Roxanne Fish which is a pan seared red fish sautéed in garlic, lemon and butter with a side of a baked potato for $20. I added a side salad for another $3. The salad arrived first and it had fresh greens and was well worth the cost. The entree arrived about 15-20 minutes after ordering. The redfish tasted great with its simple but delicious sauce cooked into it. The fillet was large and I enjoyed every bite. The baked potato came with butter and sour cream and was properly cooked and hot and very good too. I enjoyed this meal and would order it again. Table service was very good. After eating, I walked through the pretty bar with its wood paneling and several TV's. There was a good crowd there enjoying their food and drinks while watching football games. The only reason I'm giving the loft 4 stars is because of their service. My husband and I went with my mom,dad,and sister to get some good steaks which they usually don't disappoint. It took us over an hour to be seated which would have been fine if we we didn't have to wait in the heat. One of the servers said we couldn't wait inside because it was too congested. I got the 20 oz ribeye medium rare and so did my dad. My mom and husband got the 16 oz ribeye medium and medium rare. My husband, mom, and I got our steaks and they were perfect but they brought my dad a 16 oz, my dad told them politely, it was no big deal they said they would bring it back to him. He waited probably thirty minutes. We were all done and when he got it there was no pink in it at all. So he tells the server and she says well they had to hurry up and cook it so they could get it out, this is a $45 steak, if you are going to pay that price it should come out the way you want it so my dad asked if he could get another one to go. This took a long time. Another server came and offered us free desserts which was nice and the bread pudding with white chocolate is amazing but the service overall was terrible. The Loft seems to be the local attempt of an "upscale" steakhouse in Laurel. There were several pros and cons to our experience. Pros: The food was good but not spectacular. I ordered the Cajun shrimp with pasta and the Mrs. ordered the crabcake pasta with shrimp. Both of them are made with a penne pasta and served with a Cajun cream sauce. If you're looking for spice, this is not it. This dish is not spicy at all. Both of them tasted pretty good. They were both on the heavy side. We also ordered fried green tomatoes as an appetizer. Those were cooked to perfection and very good. We did not order dessert. All in all, the food is decent for the price you pay. They do have a full-service bar. Cons: The silverware is pre-wrapped in paper napkins, not cloth. The salads are served with your choice of dressing. However, the dressing is served in a small plastic side container which then you have to add yourself. A higher end restaurant would never expect a patron to add their own dressing to a salad. They would also not serve paper napkins. I am not being picky, this is just my observation for what I would consider to be a "higher end" restaurant in downtown Laurel. Tip: if you do not want to wait during peak times, make a reservation. It would be best if you made your reservation a minimum of 24 hours prior. Today, we were fortunate. We did not have a reservation and when we arrived we were told we would have to wait 45 minutes. Being from a major metropolitan area (Houston), 45 minutes is not that big of a deal so we decided to wait. However, we were seated after a short 15 minute wait. No complaints about the wait but if you don't want to wait at all, I do suggest making a reservation. The wait staff did a good job and everyone was very friendly. However, we did seem a little rushed. Bottom line - Decent food priced accordingly. Very good service. Reservations are recommended. Bon appétit, y'all. read more

I was in Mississippi with family for a funeral and we wanted some dinner. We found The Loft and went in based on how it looked. When we got in we discovered an amazing menu. There were a lot of dishes that you would find in Louisiana a lot of Creole dishes. Also lots of seafood dishes, pasta and steaks. The crab cakes were good and full of crab. I had the fish of the day which was Red Snapper. You had the option of grilled or blackened. I had mine blackened with asparagus and a side salad. The food was amazing. I had a tasty Chicken Parm with pasta and my wife had the Snapper and she loved it. Prior to the main course, we had the fried asparagus.... It was delish!! We were the first ones in the door. As we weren't able to make a reservation, we arrived at 4:15pm (they open at 5pm). By 4:45pm there was a long line on both sides of the door along the building. We were seated immediately. They are trained to keep people happy and moving along to accommodate many guests. We had the fried mushrooms as an appetizer and weren't disappointed. They were fried perfectly and weren't heavy and greasy. The grilled pork chop cooked medium was AMAZING! We truly didn't know that a pork chop could be so juicy, tender & flavorful! The 14 oz ribeye steak with fried shrimp was delicious, as well. The bacon on the baked potato and in the potato casserole was the best bacon we have ever eaten. No room for dessert, but if it was like the rest of the food, it was probably amazing, too! Refills on drinks were timed perfectly. Bus staff was at the ready to collect the empty plates. We were lucky enough to be next to a couple of regulars while waiting to get in who gave us some recommendations on what to order. They weren't wrong and there's definitely a reason why they are regular customers. Atmosphere was simple, but nice. Love the exposed brick and gas lamps. There is indoor and outdoor seating. Not too crowded despite the large number of people that were seated at once. Despite the prices, dress is casual. We saw shorts, jeans, flip flops, as well as dressy dress. Only ONE complaint and it's a big one...there in only one ladies room with one stall. Yes, there was a continual line the entire time we were there. So don't wait until you really have to use the restroom, go as soon as you think you need to go because chances are, you'll be waiting in line. read more
