I chose Mirai Nail Salon in Claremont based on their excellent reviews, so I was expecting a quality experience. Unfortunately, my visit was extremely disappointing. Since Mirai does not offer acrylic nails, I agreed to try their Gel-X service. My natural nails were cut down in preparation for the application. What should have been a routine appointment turned into a nearly four-hour ordeal. The Gel-X application alone took approximately three hours, followed by another hour for a basic pedicure. For the amount of time spent and the price charged ($130 before tip), I expected a much better result. The nails are uneven, overly thick, and have an unnatural appearance. Several nails curve dramatically downward, creating a claw-like look rather than the clean, natural shape Gel-X is known for. Looking underneath the nails, there are noticeable gaps and inconsistencies in the application. I left feeling disappointed instead of happy with the finished product. The most frustrating part is that I paid a premium price and invested half my day, only to come home considering removing the nails myself. I rarely leave negative reviews, but when a service costs this much and takes this long, the quality should reflect it. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend the Gel-X service at Mirai. Im so happy I found this place. My first time here I did the Japanese manicure with Gel overlay with Celia and they lasted a month. The gel did not damage my original nails. My nails did not crack, chip or break. For my second visit I brought an idea to Xiaoyu and she did such and amazing job making it her own. Worst pedicure I've ever gotten. Took 1 hour and 45 minutes for a simple plain white gel pedicure. All the nails were left with polish around it and skin around the area was not properly prepped. One of the big thumbs was clumpy, thick, and uneven. Some nails were not even painted all the way as they would overpaint, and try to take off the polish, leaving the far sides of the nails unpainted but the skin still having polish. read more

When I moved back to the states after living in Japan, I was looking for a similar-style nail salon. I was really pleasantly surprised to find Mirai! The girls are all very friendly and the space is clean and calm. I've been going to Xiaoyu for a few months now and she always does a really fantastic job! Her hand-painted flowers and designs are amazing, and she does great work following reference photos. I had a really complicated design idea that involved a lot of different photos, but she rose to the challenge and we came up with a design that got compliments from EVERYONE. The most complimented nail design I've ever had! She's also so fast and careful with the removal and nail care work. Logistically, parking is very easy and the location is convenient. Service: this place doesn't do both mani and pedi at the same time. My mani took about an hour. Pedi maybe 30 minutes. Nail tech for both: Mandy. Mandy was decent. Service was average. Felt like she had to run somewhere. Filed my nail without asking me what shape and when she finally asked (after shaping my pinky nail) she seemed irritated because I wanted square round. I over heard another customer ask about a hard gel finish so I asked if I could it get it done. Half way through my mani she asked if I was going to want it and I confirmed. She continued by telling me that next time I have to include it in my appointment request because "there's no time" and I didn't ask for it when I made my appointment. Lady... if I'd known you offered it, I would have requested it. Borderline rude. Will I be returning- probably not. Plenty of other nail places to try out.
