When a restaurant has a good idea and then decides to franchise and/or add locations, it falls flat in sustaining quirkiness. E.g., Dinosaur barbecue in Syracuse, NY tried to replicate the biker bar/friendly waitress/down home feeling in Troy and has flopped, and is no more than average. Same here, sadly. Maybe Miss Shirley maybe had a good idea but then you need to train cooks to cook poached eggs all the way through, and be careful with the head covering so you don't serve those eggs with head hair. Lost my appetite though the couple bites of crab and corn were good. (I am no longer on the Yelp "elite" squad so I fear not!) The ambiance is like a chain restaurant. Clean but dull. I'm just here to add on to the thousand amazing reviews that I 100% support. I got the fried chicken, gravy and biscuit omelette. I really never eat chicken and eggs together. I thought it was an omelette with a fried piece of chicken on top and biscuit smothered in gravy. The chicken is actually cooked inside the omelette. I loved it. The taste was a great balance with every other ingredient in the omelette (cheese, peppers, tomatoes and onions), pimento biscuit and smothered in gravy on top. It was just savory and delicious. Hash browns were delicious. I love that what both my husband and I received was not greasy. Been to too many breakfast spots where you see the food swimming in grease. Hmmmm....well folks....Miss Shirley's is hyped up but it also is delicious. Now when I say it's delicious...there is room for improvement in my eyes. If 3.5 was an option I would give them that but since it's not I'll give them a 4 star review as most things were positive during our visit. My brother and I had a birthday breakfast here with a few friends and family, and it was decent. There was a wait but they handled the wait and getting everyone seated very well. There were several meals ordered this go round. From healthy hot mess scramble, chicken and waffles, chicken and cheddar green onion waffles, coconut cream French toast, grits and avocado toast. Just about everything was decent. The hot mess scrambled didn't really have a wow factor but was good, I was informed the coconut cream French toast was dry which is probably due to it being so thick, the chicken and waffles were great but my brother had wished they were full waffles rather than mini, and the grits were delicious. The drink Jam Berry splash did not taste of any alcohol at all. If you come for your bday, just FYI they do not offer anything but you can get a candle out on your meal. They are kid friendly and pet friendly of you are sitting outside. The inside has a good amount of space especially if you are in a booth. Some of the side by side seating at a table seemed tight. It's average level of noise. Tip - Parking is available at the Harbor Park Garage. Parking at Harbor Park Garage is discounted to $5 for guests at Miss Shirley's Cafe (3 hour maximum. After 3 hours, Harbor Park Garage's regular rates apply, and Miss Shirley's validation is void). Ask for parking validation at the host stand. Other Parking options are the Kaiser Permanente Garage (Pratt St.) and Pier V Parking Garage (Pratt St.). These garages are not validated. This is a delicious brunch spot! I decided to stop by on a Saturday and they were packed! I put my name and phone number down and received a text that my table was ready after about an hour of waiting. In that time, I walked around the area by the Hard Rock Cafe since it was my first time visiting Baltimore. However, there were plenty of people waiting both outdoors and inside the lobby (since it's located at the ground level of a building). There's also no parking lot so we got lucky and found street parking about 2 blocks away. I knew right away that I wanted the gravy train southern skillet after seeing the menu. I love a good biscuits and gravy but this was elevated 10x with fried chicken, collard greens with ham, grits with diced bacon, and topped with a sunny side up egg! I'm usually not a fan of grits but theirs was actually the best that I've had so far. The fried chicken was a bit dry though and because it was all in one skillet including the collard greens at the bottom, it did make the fried chicken soggy, which I didn't really prefer but my fiancé loved the mix of everything together. The biscuit was also delicious! The center had a bit of cheese that added even more flavor. The entire dish was a flavor explosion with so many different textures too. Delicious food, would definitely come back if I visited Baltimore again. The service was great and despite the wait, it was still shorter than the estimated wait time. Soft and delicious. I recommend. The eggs had the perfect amount of cheese melt on them. It didn't feel like they just threw two slices of Kraft on there and called it a day. Really impressed. My guest enjoyed the savory chicken and waffles, however, it did not come with syrup, which they had to ask for. The cranberry juice is tart and bitter, not sweet. My other guest got a strawberry lemonade, which they enjoyed. The French toast serving is generous. If you want specialty whipped cream, it's $5. The oatmeal was eclectic and delicious. I was really excited to stop at Miss Shirleys at BWI on our way back from a recent trip. My kid had gone separately on way down and really liked the pancakes, didn't get sick at all. We are typically really careful and only get snacks in airports but this place has such a great reputation for gluten free we rolled the dice a second time on the way back. My food and my husbands food was pretty good but my kid was sick within 10 minutes of eating the pancakes which meant they either had gluten or were cross contaminated. If you try them make sure you leave a lot of time between the meal and your flight, it took us 45 minutes from start to finish which is a lot for an airport. This experience makes this a not recommend for celiac/allergy sufferers but if you are a regular person that has a lot of time to kill you can give them a try! read more

My niece and had planned a special brunch for two weeks and that we were going to grab takeout brunch from Miss Shirley's and picnic today. I was absolutely craving their strawberry waffles. I heard her very clearly place the 2 orders of Fresh Strawberry Waffles and reconfirm it and whoever took the order did a 3rd confirmation. When she drove over she and the person taking the order reconfirmed the order a 4th times. Having done so 4x she really didn't think it necessary to check the order when she go to the car. Who would? 20 minute drive there and 20 minute drive back. I can't eat waffles w/o strawberries, it's what makes it for me and need the combined taste of sweet and sour, just too ehh for me with out the fruit, so I was left with zip to eat as a main course and it was a no go order for me and I was left with only the side order of biscuits I'd ordered for my looked forward to brunch. We called were passed around from a sweet women who acknowledge the confirmations and our order has them listed, to an incredibly attitude drenched rude guy, who quipped with full blow sass a half #^#@$ sorry, "But we didn't charge you for them." What difference does that make, I am spending what should be a lovely brunch with my niece fighting with him. I asked if they could be dashed over to us, to which he repeated to me we did not charge you for them, like this was make good for the order flub. Not my point, sir. I explained that the order as now put forth was worthless to me and asked for ONE of the two worthless to me orders to be comped. I thought I was being pretty tame as I could and probably should have asked for both to be comped as neither was the correct order. I'd already added maple syrup to mine so the niece couldn't eat that. So as only one was being pitched, only asked for compensation for the one. He was going to refuse that and got snottier and had the nerve to say, I already apologized, but I pressed. He was ridiculously rude and sassy and you could tell not in the least bit upset that they had royally screwed up an order that was confirmed 4 times. I should not have had to fight with him to comp the one order. Any other restaurant would have done it. They messed up not me. I paid, confirmed 4X and plunked down my to $40 for the two orders. I'm NTAH. Had it been my restaurant, I'd have been mortified, not rude and arrogant with a customer I mis served and I would have comped both out the barn door and apologized with sincerity, not a sour attitude, as they were NOT what was ordered or happily looked forward for two weeks. We had an absolutely delicious, decadent breakfast/brunch at Miss Shirley's! They are busy for a reason - the food is unique and they're in a perfect location right by the aquarium. We like to order savory and sweet options for variety. I loved the Cuban Huevos sandwich - the ham and pulled pork was well seasoned and the meal was so filling. My dad really enjoyed his Eddies two egg breakfast (he's more of a classic breakfast platter guy). The sweet meals are outstanding - pineapple pancakes were perfect, as was the banana bread French toast. We didn't actually order an entree for our toddler (though they do have an impressive kids menu) because the 4 adult entrees were so big it was plenty to share and still have leftovers. Expectations were sky-high as we approached this venerable venue on Cold Spring Lane for lunch on a rainy Friday. We'd seen the Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives episode and we'd heard much about the legendary breakfast foods, served all day. Past efforts to visit did not suceed on account of (no) parking. This time the parking gods were smiling at us, as we scored a primo spot in the charmingly petite lot at the back of the building. Even though local private schools were closed, the spacious dining rooms were probably 60% empty; another good sign as we had been mentally prepared for a waiting line. At our table we were met by the charming and affable Gabby, who could give lessons in professonal table-waiting. The menu is lengthy, detailed and imaginative, the service prompt and the coffee refills just frequent enough to be there when wanted without being too intrusive (credit Gabby on this one too). Portion sizes were ample without being outrageously wasteful - Miss Shirley's is not Denny's or Bob Evans with the need for multiple plates. The grits and bagels that came with my "Amy's Cajun Omelette" were tasty without being huge (see pic). My wife's Cuban sandwich was larger; she could only eat half. We thoroughly enjoyed everything, and as for me, I had zero appetite at dinner time. It was that filling. On a Sunday morning, my wife and I walked down to the cafe from our nearby Inner Harbor hotel. About an hour after opening, we had no difficulty being seated for breakfast. My wife picked the buckwheat pancakes off the top of this. I opted for challah French toast from the main menu. My wife got a decaf coffee, and I the fresh squeezed orange juice. Our drinks arrived quickly, and our food was not too long afterward. My French toast topped with berries was huge and filled the entire plate. Best as I tried, I couldn't eat it all. It was delicious and surprisingly light for being such thick slices. The accompanying syrup was a little thin for my liking, though. My side of bacon was smoky and yummy. My wife's pancakes were okay, but not all buckwheat had some multigrain mixed in. She didn't get any sides and mooched off my bacon a bit. Service was fantastic, and they were well-staffed. They were particularly good with young kids. They had some Etch A Sketches for the kids to play with while waiting for their meals. My wife and I thought about the movie Elf and wondered what they were drawing. My only gripe was the prices. Our breakfast for two was well north of $50. Towards the end of our wait, my friend and I ordered our delicious cocktails at the to-go window (they do not have a bar to sit and wait at, so this was the next best option lol). "That's my jam! Berry Smash" cocktail was on point! For my entree, I went with my go-to meal, the "get your grits on," which I chose the blackened jumbo shrimp with fried green tomatoes on grits with bacon. Yessss! So good! The portion looks a bit small coming out, but it's the right amount of food. Our waitstaff was great, and it was her second day working.
