I came again another time recently with the bae and we got the chicken dinner (I believe) along with the Cajun pasta. Both really great. We came in the last hour they were opened without realizing and I offered for our food to be to go, and we were told we're able to stay it's not an issue which was greatly appreciated. There were a couple of people coming by and grabbing their orders and it was overall a nice way to end the night with great tasting food. The ambience is simple. The place is very well-lit and bright. The service was good. Just enough attention, but not too much where I felt taken i'm aback. The food is amazing. Yes, I did get the fried chicken on both my visits. I love their homemade sweet tea. The coleslaw is delicious and paired well with the chicken and mac & cheese. I especially like the fact that the white meat was not dried out, but juicy in the center. The cornbread was a little too sweet for my taste, but it did the job and filled that little spot where I needed filling. I promised myself to go back again and expand my taste buds. In a shopping area. On street or garage parking nearby. No patrons on a Sunday at 1130am. Upon entering the music was inviting. My friend started dancing since no one was watching. We were a bit taken back to the cushions we were to sit on if you wanted to sit on the bench and not the chair. They were all stained, so we sat elsewhere. Food was ok. Waffles weren't as crisp as expected. It was soft and easily breaking up. Salmon bites were good. Greens needed some more flavor. A serving of cornbread comes in a 2 inch tall ramekin. The service was good as the lady working was kind & friendly, I ordered online for pick up and got blackened salmon with corn bread & yams $24, southern catfish dinner with cornbread & fries $22, Miss Toyas famous fried chicken with Mac n cheese & collard greens $20, and bread pudding $9. The big order was for the family, so I was able to try most of the items that were ordered. - Cornbread was alright. - Yams were the best side, but that's not saying much. - Catfish was decent, but I've had better. - Fries were indeed seasoned, but they were just okay. - The bread pudding was my most anticipated item, but it was disappointing. It was just an okay, smaller piece of bread pudding, and the serving of ice cream you get is not enough. One thing that could make it better is the addition of a praline sauce for the dessert. - Collard greens were okay - Mac n cheese was alright, but I expected better - The fried chicken was okay, but it had ZERO seasoning and flavor, which was disappointing. - The sauces were pretty good, and my favorite was the BBQ sauce (I believe it was), which helped enhance the unseasoned fried chicken experience. All in all, the service was good and the ambiance (music/vibe) was nice, but when it comes to the food, it's overpriced and average at best. We ordered the lamb chops, salmon, and a chicken sandwich, with sides of collard greens, sautéed cabbage, mac & cheese, seafood fried rice, and seasoned fries. Everything was delicious. The only suggestion I'd make is trimming the fat on the lamb chops a bit more. The flavor was great, but I spent some time working around the fat to get to the meat. This was my second time here. I was meeting a friend for a late lunch. We were served quickly and checked on often (server was Imani, she was great). I got the salmon bites, Caesar salad (side), and the cornbread. The salmon bites were good but I could've been fine with slightly less sauce. The cornbread was delicious! The honey glaze...I could've just had that. The salad, however, left much to be desired. The dressing had an interesting aftertaste but the cheese was a dusting which was slightly unique. The lone sentient being navigating this chaos is not a waiter, but a harried deckhand on a sinking ship, desperately trying to plug leaks with his thumbs while the captain (a gentleman of leisure, it would seem, who prefers the digital solace of his telephone to the tangible needs of his patrons) observes the impending doom from the comfort of the dry dock. The mise-en-scène was a study in neglect. A tableau vivant of dissatisfaction. Fellow diners, trapped in their own private dioramas of disappointment, sat in a state of suspended animation. TL; DR: 10/10 recommend this place and want to come back, when you want southern cookin come try this in Rio! As soon as you walk in there seems to be two counters, which was a little confusing, one for carry out and one for dine in. You walk to the carry out counter to say you're dining in and they say sit anywhere while giving you cutlery and a menu. They have minimalist decor with neon accent lighting of a chicken and "feed your soul" with gray and red accent colors which is great because it isn't overstimulating. We got one entree, one appetizer, and four sides which fed the both of us while not making us too full. The food is southern, but not heavy. While we were there, maybe 90 minutes in total, about three to five groups of people (ranging from 2-5 people) came in, looked at the menu then left. One was a family and the others were couples, we weren't sure why they left because everything we ate was delicious. Lots of people placed carry out orders while we were there, which was nice to see their quick service on that too, all in all I think most people waited 20 minutes which is great I think. 4/7/24 We met up with friends in the area. And saw soul food, so we went in Service is lacking... We sat waiting for someone to come over and at least give us water and the menu. Hubby ended up going up front to get the menu. Then we waited for a while... We had been enjoying catching up. It wasn't until we started to feel hungry and realized no one came over. Our friend went up to ask about service. After several minutes, a young woman came over to get our order and realized we hadn't even got water. Food took a while to come out as well. All in, the 4 of us spent over 2 hours here. At least we had time to catch up. I think if it was just hubby and I, we would have walked out and went elsewhere. Berry Lemonade and Southern Punch were good Corn Bread was good Deviled Eggs with Fried Shrimp was different but turns out really good! Smothered Porkchops were different than how I'm used to, but it was amazing. Collard Greens were good. Seeing so many mixed reviews had us nervous to try this place, but I am so glad we finally rolled the dice. Everything was absolutely perfect. They were out of the grits, and there was no bartender tonight, so we didn't get to try their drinks, but what we did try was hot, delicious, fresh, and tasted like it was made with love just like good southern food should. What a WOW - for the longest time I've heard people talk about how great the food and vibes are at Miss Toya's, so never ever ever did I imagine or prepare myself for the massive disappointment that I experienced while dining there. Each and every one of the dishes that my friends and I had were literally PACKED/LOADED with salt!! It's one thing to season your food - but a whole different ball game when it is over seasoned!!! No exaggeration- I could not have more than one of the lamb chops because of how salty it was! And I could barely even have more than 2-3 forks of the spinach. I was tempted to take it away and find a way to perhaps rinse off some of the seasoning - but that just seemed like way too much effort. I found myself in the area for the weekend and came here twice - once for carryout, and the other for brunch. I actually have not had a chance to try their location in Silver Spring, so I was interested in checking this place out. Note that this is their Southern Kitchen, while the Miss Toya's in Silver Spring is creole-focused. I tried the southern catfish dinner with mac and cheese and candied yams, accompanied by their half and half for my first visit. The catfish was good, if just a bit salty, but the mac and cheese was a little dry to me. The yams were fine, but overly sweet. I loved the half lemonade, half sweet tea drink. For my dine in brunch visit, my friend and I started with the southern shrimp deviled eggs and the chicken soul roll. For our entrees, we had the salmon with greens and yams, and the fried chicken with rice and greens. The southern shrimp deviled eggs were not a favorite for us. The eggs were fine, but the shrimp could be left off. The chicken soul roll is pretty good, but very heavy, of course. We agreed that both our entrees were solid - nothing mind-blowing, but they got the job done. The service was slow, but the servers were friendly. For dessert, we tried the bread pudding and peach cobbler. The cobbler was a little dry. The cocktails were good, but they did take a little while to come out. I think the set up of the restaurant isn't good because I was in the way of the servers and pick up orders as I placed my to go order. I was able to sit and eat on the side where they have pick up orders so it was nice that the employees allowed that since it is a restaurant. And because I was not being waited on, I did clean up after I enjoyed my meal and took my trash to a bin outside since I wasn't going to leave a tip. Please be considerate here. My friend and I went to Miss Toya's despite the already numerous negative reviews. This place is new and most of the negative reviews were about their service, so we were hopeful the food would over come the negative. Unfortunately, the last reviews aligned with our experience. My friend and I waited about 20 minutes before a staff member came to take our drink order. Once we ordered our food: Cajun Chicken Pasta, Shrimp and Grits, and a side of Mac and Cheese, we waited another 20-30 minutes. Weirdly, the food came out at significantly separate times. I understand how difficult it is to time different means to be done at the same time, but restaurants usually bring both people's mess out together. My pasta came out 10 minutes before my friend's grits, and the Mac and cheese came out much later than the pasta and grits. After an hour and a half, we were ready for the check and asked for a box. The waiter clearly forgot about this because we waited another 20 minutes before asking again. We tried to ask sooner but he just wasn't around? Lol. The food was good and rich, but I worry that their slow service and disregard for the guests is going to turn people away. (We did see two groups leave before getting their food). read more

I had the southern deviled eggs with fried shrimp. The shrimp were large and juicy and beautifully fried and the deviled eggs were just perfect. I had a cup of gumbo - a dark roux, vegetables, chicken, sausage, and shrimp, and served over rice. Perfectly spicey. For dessert I tried the Banana pudding, thick and sweet. On a hunt for a filling dinner, we stopped by Miss Toya's Southern Kitchen at Rio for some dinner. I got the devil eggs with fried shrimp and it was amazing - soft eggs with fluffy yolk seasoned perfectly and topped with crunchy shrimp. We also got the hot honey chicken sandwich with fries. Not bad - it can compete with all the other chicken sandwiches out there. The chicken soul rolls and brown fried rice were less spectacular but they did fill up the few empty spaces left in our bellies. We left stuffed and holding our tummies. The food was really good the first time we came so we decided to try the place again. I was pretty excited to try some new dishes and get a new drink, but I have to say the second time I had similar disappointments to the first time. The decor & service doesn't really match the price of everything. I don't mind paying premium prices, but I expect premium quality in return. The first time we came there was only one waitress for the entire restaurant and she was really nice but it meant long wait times. This time it was mostly empty so having one server wasn't as bad, but my drink had a bug in it. I get that bugs in sweet drinks can happen, but she said she would remake it for me and she just scooped the bug out and gave me the same drink. The drink itself was overly sweet and not really proportioned properly so I just ended up having to leave my $15 drink on the table. For the food: * the shrimp and deviled eggs were good, but pretty hard to eat. Overall for the price I wouldn't get it again * the fried fish appetizer was large enough for a meal and tasted good, I'd get it again * I was most excited about the bread pudding and it was good, but it wasn't anything special. We were going to go to Nando's and saw Miss Toya's. Despite there being no published menu outside, we looked up the menu on my phone, so decided to give it a try anyway. Food sounded really good. I had the lamb chops, my friend had the shrimp and grits. The lamb chops were FABULOUS! Three very big chops. I had sweetened yams and the best coleslaw I've had in a long time. Truly excellent and warrants another trip soon. My friend's shrimp and grits was abnormally wet (more like stew than shrimp and grits.) But he said delicious and full, full, full of shrimp! That was the good part. The service was non existent. They took our order and brought the food and we never saw them again! My friend had to get up to fill his own water glass! My lamb chops required a sharp steak knife or equivalent. I only had the standard butter knife. No one came by to ask and that should be standard service with that dish! And general staff demeanor showed to be not friendly at all. When we left 3 waitresses were standing up front. No one even looked up or said "goodnight" or "thanks for coming in" What seemed ironic to me is when they came to take the order there were two of them. One seemed to be in training! She won't learn much about proper table service there!! So all in all, I'm glad we went in. A+ on food quality, quantity and taste. D- on general service. My family loves this restaurant. They would rank this as 5 stars. I've eaten here multiple times. The food is great. Twice I've ordered something where it wasn't to my liking. It wasn't a big deal but what was most frustrating was that the waiter never returned until the rest of my family finished their meals and it was time for the check. That's not the typical experience but it happened a couple of times. Perfectly fried to a crisp and moist on the inside. The chicken wings were good too! I personally preferred the hot honey over the pineapple jerk. The time I ordered the pineapple jerk wings, I think they were refried and were a bit dry. But the famous chicken was crispy and juicy, just like my hot honey wings. I enjoyed the chicken soul rolls. They were crispy and included a good amount of filling and sauce. The corn bread was also good! It is on the sweet end, but I didn't mind it at all. Nestled right on the corner of the Rio strip and perpendicular to the AMC Building/Silver Diner, it's a great location to catch patrons leaving the movie theater or Dave & Busters. If I heard correctly, they just opened yesterday, June 10, so we caught them on opening day. My family of four was happy to walk in to grab dinner after finishing our play sessions at D&B. Let me start with, it's a grand opening, so they'll need some time to work out their kinks. It was HOT as all get out inside and they weren't quite seating patrons - more like you were ordering take out. However, I did note that a few parties were eventually seated. It's a very friendly and clean establishment, where the workers wear hair nets. This is a small, family-owned, and black-owned business. We ordered lots of different things to try from their starters, entrees and sides. If you didn't know, you should plan to wait at least 15min for your order as things are prepared fresh. And, after all, soul food takes both time and love. Southern Catfish Dinner ($22): comes with two very large catfish filets and two sides. I chose collards and cabbage. Babyyyyy that catfish was so flavorful and crisp & the greens and cabbage were seasoned so well! I'd get this again and again! Miss Toya's Fried Chicken ($24): comes with 1/2 chicken and two sides. My eldest ordered this, with Cajun fries and yams. That chicken was moist and seasoned super well! The fries were not seasoned that well, but could use a few more shakes of Cajun seasoned. The yams were delicious with a very sweet syrup. She was so full and could only eat like half of her chicken lol. Blazing Shrimp ($15, appetizer): comes with 6 fried shrimp tossed in this spicy sauce. My husband tried this and said it was really good! (For $15, I wouldn't be mad if they gave me more shrimp, but it's not terribly diff than the prices from nearby establishments and tastes really good) Southern Wings ($15, appetizer): comes with 6 wings in your choice of sauce and you get to pick if you want grilled or fried. We opted for fried with old bay lemon pepper. Amazing! Again, a lil pricey, but okay. Catfish Nuggets ($16, appetizer): comes with lots of catfish nuggets and Cajun fries. Now lemme talk about these. The "nuggets" were SO BIG! I'm used to nuggets being much smaller. They did not skimp whatsoever. We also didn't know it would come with fries so that was a nice surprise/balance. I would totally order this to get my catfish fixin on. Collard Greens ($8, side) and Mac and cheese ($9, side): ok these sides were a tad bit pricey to be a pint and they didn't fill the container to the brim. That said, I really really REALLY liked their Mac and cheese. It wasn't overly greasy, had the perfect balance of seasoning and cheeses. My husband noticed that they used different types of noodles and not just the standard elbow. There's some cavatappi (the spiral) and two sizes of elbows - giving you the perfect bite. The greens, as I mentioned way up above, are amazing! They're not overcooked and have a subtle kick to em. I didn't see any smoked Turkey but you could taste the flavor. My husband and I were in the Rio area and decided to go to Miss Toya's. When we arrived the employees were pleasant and handed us our menus since we took our food to go. My husband had the gumbo with added crab and I had the lamb chops, yams and macaroni and cheese. The was delicious! The service was fast. We even ordered desserts as well. For dessert we had the banana pudding and the rum cake. The place is small, but cozy and quiet. It reminds me of the family carry outs in Nola. I would definitely recommend and will be going back soon read more

Well I was eagered to go th this restaurant, I was taken there for my birthday. The food that my company ordered was horrible. The Mac was burnt, my husband ordered the cornbread, and he's a cornbread lover, would you believe that they served his a store bought corn muffin and slap some butter jus on top of it. Now, we can tell cooked muffins from a store muffin. And had the nerve to charge $6.00 for this bullshit muffin the salmon was salty with some nasty sauce on top. Only thing I can say is my lamb chops were alright. Not great or good just alright. I won't attend there again I could have cooked it at home and taste way better. They need to put more love in there for not just slap some stuff together and serve at a high rate Price and who tips themselves. Ambiance was not what I expected. Food was hit when ordered and served. The pasta chicken was ordered by one guest and was good as was the blackened salmon. Another ordered the chicken sandwich and said the heat was just right. In ordered the shrimp and crab browned butter rice and forgot to hold the green peppers but it was still good. The during. First time visit, upon entering the staff at the front were not inviting at all. Just told us to pick a seat and we will bring you menus. The restaurant was not busy at all but most tables and chairs were visibly dirty. Only one server who was also the bartender. The hurricane drink was great as well as the deviled eggs and Philly cheesecake egg rolls. The menu viewed online did not reflect what was available at this particular location. I got the catfish which was great but the greens are under seasoned. I wanted the Mac and cheese but they were out so I decided to get the yams and they were "meh". My wife and I went to this place for dinner because it smells really good every time we walk by. However, I have to say my experience is terrible. We ordered their signature fried chicken and the Cajun rotisserie chicken. We wait for about 30 mins for the fried chicken and another 10 mins for the rotisserie chicken. The fried chicken is fine, but definitely not worth $20 for half a chicken plus two sides. The Cajun rotisserie chicken has nothing to do with what we thought "Cajun". It was dressed with honey mustard sauce. I have to said, unfortunately, the sauce was the best part of the entire meal. The rotisserie chicken's breast was so dry. Thanks God, I can use some more honey mustard sauce to juice it up. To be fair, the sides are actually better than my expectation. We had Cajun fries, coleslaw, Mac n cheese, and jambalaya rice. Paid 35 plus tip dollars for an appetizer (wings) and crab fries and a tea... HORRIBLE, crab fries were soggy, wings are oversized with no flavor (the grease needs to be changed). Restaurant owners need to know that you can't sell overpriced food to accommodate the rent for your spot. Miss Toyas should be a Carryout at best, the way the food tastes and was presented it should've cost maybe 20 bucks plus tip. Can definitely get better chicken at a chain restaurant read more

I was in the area so I decided to stop by here since I'm always in the southern food mood. The menu items looked so good, so I was very indecisive. I ended up getting the hot honey chicken sandwich with fries and it tasted very good. Glad I got it. When I'm in the area again I'll definitely stop by to try their other food items. read more
