This place is a gem. The food is great - and I will get to the details later. I want to start with the staff. It might be the best collection of people I've come across while traveling through Virginia. First of all they provided excellent service - but went even beyond that - welcoming us, giving us travel tips and even giving my brother directions on how to get to the restaurant when he got lost! I now travel to Chancellorsville frequently and it is now our regular spot to stop. The food is bomb. I recommend : Spare Ribs - super flavorful, fall off the bone. The sauces on the table add a zing to it. Mac & Cheese - bannnnnngin'. Creamy, cheese without being overwhelmingly heavy. I order some to go on my way home, and drive it back to Rhode Island in food cooler. Drool worthy. Potato Salad - Nice and pretty light. Just the right amount of seasoning and dressing. Salad - if you want something green on the side. Get the garden salad and then meat separately. Sausage is fairly standard but very juice and has a nice snap to it. The jalapeno and cheese sausage was great. Pulled pork and brisket were also awesome. My go to are the spare ribs, pulled pork, brisket, mac and cheese and potato salad. Then I pour the NC sauce on it. YUUUUUUMMMMY! Low key eyeing that menu for 10 people for myself :P Restaurant is clean, with cute décor and plenty parking. We were in Charlottesville, VA just for the day before making the 4 hour drive home from an amazing 15th wedding anniversary getaway weekend. We were 'hangry' so my husband looked up nearby spots on Yelp for lunch. Mission BBQ popped up with high ratings. Being huge fans of good BBQ, we decided to give them a try. We are SO glad we did!!! The brisket was so delicious- moist, flavorful and so tender you could easily cut it with your plastic fork! Lots of options for sauce- our fave was the Smoky Mountain! We got the XL option and both chose Mac & Cheese which was really good! Cornbread was a bonus we weren't expecting and it was tasty. The highlight of our dining experience was the lovely lady, Shane, who provided service in the dining room. She was genuinely kind and sweet. We could tell that she truly likes her job- she just radiates joy! She gave me a compliment which truly made my day!!! Before we left, I asked if she was a 'hugger' and she said yes- and we shared a great big hug!! The next time we travel to the area again, we will most definitely stop in for a visit- for fabulous food, outstanding service, smiles, and hugs!! I had a very good experience here. You order at the counter and my food came out pretty quickly. I got the pulled pork sandwich (NC style, which means it comes with cole slaw on it) + the mac and cheese. The sandwich was great! I thought the size was just right, the meat was tender and juicy (not too fatty or too stringy), and the cole slaw was good. I liked the smoky mountain sauce the best. The mac and cheese was just the right amount of cheesiness for me, plus a little crispiness on top. The lemonade was also good, although pretty sugary. My friend got the brisket and she really liked it - it looked thick and juicy. The interior of the place is nice and spacious, with a high ceiling. Servers came around regularly and asked how we were doing and cleared our trays for us. Overall, I really enjoyed my meal and I think it'll be my go-to place in town for BBQ going forward. read more

Mission does an ok job at bbq. I've had it in Richmond and now it's branched out into Charlottesville. The brisket is ok. Salty, lean brisket, could use more smoke. Needs a little sauce. I haven't tried other proteins as brisket is my go to and if you don't do it well I'm not gonna waste my time on other options. Mac and cheese is pretty good. As far as sauces go, Mission should really focus on making one or two good sauces vs 6 or 7 bad ones. There is not one that I actually like. read more

As someone who doesn't usually write reviews, I had to make sure to rave about Sharaida & the outstanding service we received from her during dinner. Sharaida treated us like family, with such genuine care, good humor, and attentiveness. She turned our night around and we loved our interactions. She is such a rare and special one. Make sure to ask for her! Sharaida + the good bbq = new regulars. Highly recommend the brisket (the moist and lean were both very yum, but for extra flavor, go with the moist), and the ribs. When you have juicy cuts of meat at a BBQ place - you know you are at the right place! First off service was great! It was pouring today in Charlottesville and the staff was holding the door open for us as we were running across the street toward the restaurant. He took the time to explain the menu since it was our first time there. It is a very comfortable environment where you seat yourself, place the order at the counter and wait to be called. We had the beef brisket and pulled pork. Mission BBQ has seven selections of sauce on the table as well as a refreshing horseradish sauce that was recommended for the beef brisket. It's a fast casual restaurant (order at the register and receive your food almost as soon as you sit down) but their actual service is amazing! They must have a stellar hiring manager because all the people who work here are usually smiling, chatty, and eager to help you with whatever you might need. Our party of 10 (with six children) came in this past Sunday night and I just had to write another review to give a shout out to Sharaida, who treated our kids like they were her own family, chatting with them throughout our stay, helping us settle them down, and even bringing out some complimentary goodies (so wonderful when you arrive with ravenous children!) I got a couple ribs each of the babyback and the spare ribs. The spare ribs had lots of flaky, juicy, gently charred, variegated-color meat. The babyback had a bit more bone but maybe a touch more concentrated flavor. Both were heaven-sent. I also had a taste of the brisket, both the lean and the fatty (but they don't call it 'fatty brisket' like they do in Texas). I'm not a fan of lean brisket, but they did it to perfection. The fatty brisket was fall-apart tender; it is not as smoky as most Texas brisket, and had a touch of a metallic tang, but was pretty righteous. I'm not ex-military, but I like the military theme, and the accents they use. I like how they celebrate service and feel proud of a mission and heritage. And the people there are not just 'nice', they are vibrant, and heartful, and dedicated. They bring to this bbq joint, human and communal qualities that go beyond just going to a restaurant. And that all this has now been put into the service of barbecue, well, you have to tip your hat. But back to the eats: meats like this are the real deal. No tough; no monochrome grey; no sittin'-in-a-trough too long (like just about any other BBQ place outside of Texas). Came here on a whim but was absolutely blown away by the superb service and the amazing food! The moment we walked in, we were greeted warmly by one of the staff. He gave us instructions on how to order (since it was our first time here) and made us feel welcome. Jeremy, the guy who made our food, also gave us an extra side of fries for free! He seasoned it and brought those delicious "freedom fries" to our table after we got our food. Mission BBQ has such a nice, friendly environment and everyone who works here is caring and wants to make sure "we never leave hungry!" I also love the military theme theme of this place. They really try to honor all those who served or are serving! The reserved parking spaces for veterans says a lot. Food here is wonderful!! The bbq meat is freshly smoked daily and the portion sizes are huge! We had to get a box for the leftovers. I got the pulled bbq pork sandwich and while it looks small, it was packed full of pulled pork and ended up being very filling. The baby back ribs were delicious, too. Very tender and juicy. It was smoked perfectly! I love how there are so many bbq sauces to pick from (6 different types of sauces per table). It was fun trying out all the sauces with the giant, crispy fries and the meat. Amazing BBQ. It's pretty ballsy to open up another BBQ joint in this town, but this one differentiates with a few different menu options along with the typical pulled pork and brisket. I am pretty hooked on the smoked turkey--I've had it twice and the second time it was a bit dry, but still tasty. The cole slaw is fair--lots of good veg thrown in there, but a little heavy on the mayo and celery seed. I'd like to have some more acid or even hot sauce thrown in there (but can add a splash of the NC vinegar based sauce on my own). Sauces are good: Hot Tupelo honey and Kansas City Classic were favorites. The standout is the collard greens--these are the best I've ever had! They are spicy, savory, and complex. Wow. What a disappointment, after all these 4 and 5 star reviews. The place was packed, but I'm having a hard time figuring out why. The crowd seemed to be made up of primarily college students (some with their visiting parents), and a couple of families with small children. The brisket was super-dry, as were my husband's ribs. BTW, he originally ordered the spareribs, but they apparently ran out and substituted the baby backs, without asking him. He said the rub was gritty and not very good, on top of the fact that they were very dry. He ordered a 10-rib rack and left half of them behind. For *him*, that says it all right there. I tried just about all of the sauces, and the best one is the Tupelo Honey Heat. Great balance of sweet and heat. The baked beans, which are made with brisket not pork, were delicious, as was the cornbread - nice and sweet, and has real corn kernels baked in. Very tasty. The mac and cheese was very good, but a bit on the salty side. I mean no disrespect to Charlottesville, but I'm beginning to suspect that this town is so hard up for decent eateries that aren't national fast food chains, that anything that doesn't fall into that category, is a relief. I've only heard great things about Mission BBQ, and today I found out that all of them were true. To start off with, the staff was friendly, helpful, and seemed happy to be there. That's always a big plus. To go along with that, everything was clean and people were cleaning off the dirty tables as soon as guests were leaving. Then we get to the food, and it was delicious. I just had the regular BBQ with a side of macaroni and cheese, with a piece of cornbread. The BBQ had great flavor, and at the table there were a bunch of different sauces, and each one was great in it's own way. Loved the ambiance if this Veteran friendly, PD friendly place! The decor was amazing and the singing of the national anthem at noon was awesome! The brisket was tender and the ribs fell off the bone! The mac n cheese is a must and the greens were delicious! Loved the many different bbq sauces on the table. As a former restaurant owner of a small mom and pop. I am hesitant to go to chains, preferring to support small local business. But, after trying about 1/2 a dozen BBQ places in and close to town, I have to say that Mission absolutely has the BEST brisket! Not too fatty, great flavor and good portion size. I made the mistake of going to this restaurant on 4/12. The food was acceptable, but a little slow and cold. There was no mask enforcement at all. I did not see any other customers wearing a mask. I was even threatened by other customers to remove mask when I was on the way to the restroom. It turns out there was some event going on here at that time. While I don't fault the restaurant from holding events, I do think it is their responsibility to refuse service to customers who don't follow common sense covid prevention. read more

Wow! I have to admit, I wasn't sure what to expect, but my visit to Mission BBQ FAR exceeded my expectations. Mission BBQ is a chain with a new location at Stonefield. Upon entering, it's clear that military, patriotism, & police/fire are the main focus of the branding. It's heavy-handed and not subtle, which at first made me a bit uncomfortable, wondering if i could fit in at such an establishment, but I pushed on through the entrance to the counter where an incredibly pleasant and genuine woman helped me navigate the menu and my first-time order. Everything is served a la carte, so the $$ can add up quickly, but mindful choices save the day here. I chose to go standard for my first visit and got the pulled pork sandwich. You are given the choice between "Carolina style", which I was told means to add cole slaw on top, and traditional, without cole slaw. I of course had to get the cole slaw! I made my order a combo for $3 extra and got a side of mac and cheese (after the fun woman helping me said 'please don't say French fries!' I can only assume because they have so many amazing side choices!) and also a fountain drink. I went to fill my soda, and my name was being called just as I was putting the lid on my cup. I settled into a small table in the middle of the restaurant and investigated the sauces. They have 6 available on the table, as well as a special vinegar, that I was told to shake well before adding to my sandwich; also told that using it would make it true "Carolina style". I shook it well and added some to my beautiful looking sandwich. They also have several special sauces located near the beverages that included a spicy white based sauce (amazing) and a yellow "Georgia mustard" which was flavorful and deliciously sour. The star of the sauce show in my mind, though, was the Tupelo Honey: a spicy yet sweet sauce that is so well-balanced I wanted to put it on everything. Mm! The sandwich was immense and the pork flavorful and delicious; the cole slaw was crispy and perfect. The mac and cheese was very good but quite rich - a few bites did me in. Part of the way through my meal, as I was hitting a wall of eating, an employee was asking all the tables near me if they needed anything, if everything was ok, which I thought was a nice touch in a casual place like this. When she got to me, I asked for a box, and without prompting she said with a smile, 'sure and I'll bring you a lid for the mac and cheese too'. She returned quickly with everything I needed and I boxed up half my meal to enjoy a second time. Having enjoyed my experience so much, I decided to re-visit the front counter and say thank you to the woman who had helped me. I expressed my thanks and enjoyed a very nice conversation about the food and my experience with the few ladies behind the counter. At one point, one of the women said 'oh but did you get to try the banana pudding?!' I said no and explained that I did have the mac and cheese, and while I was saying that, she was walking back toward the kitchen prep area and the next thing I know, she's bringing me a small container of banana pudding! She said, handing me the container with an eye toward my carry out box: 'here take this with you, it's so good!' I was floored :) What a relatively small gesture that has such a huge impact on customer service! It took an already very good experience and made it a wow. At that point a gentleman who works here and had seen my interaction with the women approached me with a big smile and asked if I had enjoyed everything and I said yes and he said 'it's your first time here, right?' And I said yes and he shook my hand and said he was the general manager and thanked me again for coming in. Excellent service. I was impressed. All in all a 5 star experience. Excellent customer service, delicious food, a variety of options, clean restaurant, fun vibe. (Note : there are several large televisions in the dining room.
