Just ate here for breakfast as a party of 4. Being a native New Yorker from Brooklyn, Going to the diner is just part of life, and as a chef myself, I can be very critical. I'm happy to say I don't have even one negative remark about this establishment at all. The hostess, waiter, staff, and even the other patrons were so incredibly friendly is was amazing. I need to edit this review because 1). I don't think it's fair to give a 1 star review on service when it's only one person who severely F-ed up and 2). The owner and daughter were absolutely amazing in contacting us afterwords about the situation. The food here IS very good, we had a horrible situation tonight with one woman who works there. I have revised my rating to 3 stars. 4.5/5 for food and the owners (and delivery driver) being wonderful, 0 for this horrible experience. So it's averaged out basically. The original review: Would give no star if I could. The NASTY disgusting woman who answered the phone has such an attitude every time. We literally haven't ordered here in over a year because of their NASTY attitudes. The first girl who answered the phone was sweet as can be, the older woman needs to get the hell out of the restaurant industry. She is AWFUL. We just started ordering from here again after over a year. Paid for a Turkey entree that comes with a potato and vegetable, they left both out. The woman had the AUDACITY to tell me "I packed it. I know the broccoli was in there." I am telling you ITS NOT IN THERE how dare you try to be rude to me. I don't care if you packed it - it's not there !!!!!!! I am always NICE as can be, I think I have maybe one other 1 star review on Yelp - I cannot believe this woman's attitude. She was BEYOND rude. You should have just packed it up and that's it (she said she was sending back the sweet potato and bacon - not the broccoli) Instead of saying "sorry" THIS is how she talked to us. We are cancelling the order with the credit card company. This woman was beyond horrible. I am SHOCKED at this woman's attitude. "Well I'll put an extra broccoli in". NO - the broccoli isn't here to begin with. It's not an extra broccoli !! Why would I lie about missing broccoli ?? Like I need it that bad that I'll lie about it? Instead what a GOOD person would have done is APOLOGIZED and rectified the situation. I literally never EVER complain. I never send back food. But when you pay for something you expect to get it and not get talked down to by someone who keeps insisting that the broccoli was in there. It must be invisible because I ain't seen it. Not to mention we were charged for a bacon cheeseburger with no bacon on the cheeseburger. I am livid. Mitchell's - your manager or whoever this nasty woman is needs to be fired immediately. Edited to add - she also had the audacity to tell my dad "whatever!" When he called back to ask them if they were coming back with the left out food. AND hung up the phone on him. THIS IS HOW YOU TALK TO CUSTOMERS ?? Are you kidding me ?????? Trash. *** I would like to edit this further by saying that the restaurant owner (I believe it was the owner) called us back tonight to apologize and we GREATLY appreciate that. Apparently this woman is a known problem at the restaurant. Either way I would like to say I am very happy that the owner did call us and also our delivery man was very wonderful - as was the younger girl who originally took our order (she was SO sweet, another reason I was so taken aback by the other woman's attitude). This older woman, however, I am just still in a state of shock that she would be so horribly nasty to a paying customer. If I needed to lie about broccoli that bad then I probably shouldn't be paying $60+ for a dinner. Thanks to the owner who called us, wonderful delivery man, and very very sweet girl/hostess/owners daughter (?) who took our order. That was a beautiful showing as restauranteurs. I have been a patron for at least 23 years now. This review is long overdue! I work very close to Mitchells. One of the good things is that we can order ahead and have it waiting for us when we get there. This way we can enjoy our lunch and not have to inhale it!! I usually have a wrap or salad which are so good and the sizes are big!! Usually take 1/2 home. Last I decided to order 2/$32 dinner special. It did not disappoint!! It included soup or salad, entree, a drink and dessert!! I ordered the crab meat stuffed chicken and clams. My husband ordered the meatloaf. Our kids had the New Orleans chicken and the RVC burger!! The burgers are always sooooo good and the French fries are awesome!! Jimmy was our server, and he was excellent!! Never missed a beat!! Took great care of us. Made sure we had everything... even though he was busy!! Once I went in for lunch and asked for a cup Of tea. The server brought me a paper cup. Why? I was not able to get him right away so I had to ask the busboy to bring us real cups!! I was not happy with this. I did ask him later. And he really had no answer. Besides this incident. I have never ever had a bad dining experience here. The waitstaff and owners are great!! The food is delicious too!!! Definitely recommend Mitchells. I came to eat in this small delightful vintage little diner in Valleystream. I hear they redecorated but they managed to keep that diner flare. I had a Panini with Portabello mushrooms, onions and Zucchini and Mozzarella cheese. It was Delicious !! For dessert I had the Mallomar Sundae. Vanilla ice cream with gooey marshmallow sauce and Hot Fudge topped with whipped cream. I LOVED IT! I love the old feel and the fact that it is one of the oldest Diners on Long Island. Ordered hot open sirloin beef - what a joke!!! Beef wasn't on bread and no gravy. Just slabs of cold, fatty meat. Asked for spinach salad and was sent regular salad with onions. The Quick: Fantastic salads, crispy mouth watering onion rings, and everything good in between. *Upgrading to 5, my favorite diner The Details: This is one of my go to diners for just flavorful food in Long Island, especially the salads. What really sets the gigantic salads apart is the homemade Greek dressing which has chunky tomato and peppers, with a salsa like texture. The Greek yogurt sauce is also fantastic. I've had almost every salad on the menu and they are all gigantic with fantastic grilled chicken/ salmon toppers. The onion rings are also perfection. They were so crispy and juicy yet not covered in oil... In a weird way they felt almost healthy but obviously not. Literally the best onion rings ever had. Room for improvement? The lunch menu has not seemed to have changed into years... It would be nice to try more variety. The Damage: An entree, coffee, dessert, and shared onion rings came to about $20/person. I've never actually dined here but I've eaten food from Mitchell enough times to write a review (I think) I don't love the food but don't get upset with me just yet, hear me out. My peeps who LOVES their food says it's proper American food. So maaaaaaybe it's my Caribbean palate dat doh know ah good ting when it hit meh. Sometimes we call ahead and pick up. Many times we request delivery (which is always quuck), and on other occasions we've showed up and ordered straight off the menu. Everything looks great! Portions seems just about right. Some staff members can be a bit aloof and others very Valley Stream (talk a lot) friendly. I see this as a personality thing rather than a Mitchell's issue. Like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get. Sidebar: How do you not know what type of chocolates you bought ? What do you....never mind. Today I'm writing as mixed up as I sometimes think, which isn't always a good thing. Anyway....The one thing I absolutely enjoy from here is a spinach pie. That is what yummy is! The best diner in nassau by far. Always leave here feeling satisfied. Their corn beef hash is out of this world good! If your in valley stream this is your diner/restaurant. Also it doesnt hurt that the owner is just a great guy and always treats us so nice. And all the servers are great. There is no parking lot but there is usually parking on the streets. I love Mitchell's so much. It's my favorite diner and my family and I go here often. The service is great and the one thing we absolutely love to get is the eggs Benedict. There's also unlimited refills on the coffee which is amazing. During covid they have outdoor seating on the sidewalk and indoor social distance seating. Take your pick. I almost didn't go here due to some of the reviews, but I thought it was pretty good. It has a typical diner look inside, but it's in a location you wouldn't typically find a diner. The service was good. Got refills on soda without even needing to ask. My cheeseburger was a bit overcooked, but it was still ok. The coleslaw is top-tier New York deli-style coleslaw. While my food was in the window waiting to be brought to us, this one waitress walked by, looked at my food, turned the plate, took a french fry off of it and ate it!!!! I'm not kidding. We all got breakfast or lunch and the waiter explained that he was putting in the order separately instead of together because it would get out food prepared more quickly, which was nice. We also ordered some sundaes and some single scoop and for a place that is supposed to be THE BEST for ice cream it was regular ice cream (I could see the brand name: Turkey Hill). I ordered crabmeat (was imitation) salad platter.. on it was green hard boiled eggs, lettuce, dried out and rubbery cucumbers, old tomatoes, but I must say the potato salad was deliciously awesome! My other half went with pizza burger and french fries which he ate every bite. Waitress was really nice and so was staff. Cool they offer 10 percent off through Yelp. Ive been going to Mitchell's my whole life. I'm 40 now. I've never seen it this dead as it is now. There's a few super good really nice waitresses (women) but the young man in the front that walks around is rude and interrupted our meal a couple of times to see if our waitress is doing OK. I'm all stressed that I've never once seen the restaurant this empty and it's been empty on a regular basis for the last month or so I'm about to stop going because there must be something going on. also the decor for the holidays which has always been super cute are sub par and so is the food. read more

Service is sometimes spotty - they forget to bring the little things such as brown sugar, hot sauce, etc but the food is DELICIOUS and consistent. I can confirm their Spanish omelette tastes great - not dry, good flavors, and on top of that it's very filling. Pancakes are a hit as well, especially with strawberry or apple preserves.
