Unfortunately, after it was installed, it stopped working approximately six different times and follow-up visits were needed. Water dripped onto our ceiling from the drain pan, and I had to have it professionally repaired. They finally got the system working. Did I mention this happened in the middle of the summer with a newborn? I decided to let the cost of the ceiling repair go, as I felt bad for them working on the system in the heat. In the fall, we decided to use another local HVAC company moving forward. They pointed out that Krope and Son hadn't installed the correct filter size, and had instead jammed an incorrect size into the new system. Now, one year later, it's been discovered that the drain pan was actually broken and siliconed together. I called Tim to ask why they did it this way, and he completely lost his temper, spoke down to me, and used the time to badmouth his competitor. Boy, am I glad I never filled out the sheets he had asking for recommendations to neighbors and friends. Guess they've lost our business for good.

The dispatcher Liz actually called to tell me they'd be running 30 minutes late and confirmed with me that that would be okay. Nice touch. Tony (an owner) came out at the new time and properly assessed the situation and presented a couple solutions. As I am a well-informed customer, (maybe too informed for some) I am always appreciative of techs who are not scared off by my technical questions and don't try to snow me. Tony had no problem that I knew the jargon and the systems in play, and was a consummate professional. He even stated that he wouldn't be suggesting a maintenance program as it was obvious I had that in hand. The price for the call was very fair ($79) and the price for the service performed was also fair. This alone sets them apart from most HVAC people in the western suburbs where up-front gouging is the norm. Too many companies both big and small want to charge you crazy prices just to show up and then have the stones to put the screws to you from there on. He never came close to suggesting I replace my 18 year old system. For HVAC folks, that's test number 1. LOL It's clear to me that Harmonic is building a reputable business that will provide a valued service without all the greedy nonsense. They are not a bare-bones cheapest-on-the-block operation by any means, but they are also clearly not out to rip you off like so many others. I have no doubt they will be around for a long time. DeKalb Mechanical has serviced my furnace 3 times in the 6 years since I've owned my home, and this week assisted in a chimney replacement. I chose DeKalb Mechanical because the brand new furnace had been installed by them before my purchase. Andy & Charles have always listened patiently to my frantic description of the problem and sent repair technicians within the day. The techs are consistently courteous and knowledgeable and pretty good about cleaning up after themselves.. The final charge always seems high to me - they're probably competitive - I'm "old", living on a fixed income, and think any service costing more than $200 is too much! I've been particularly crabby these last two weeks when I finally established that my various furnace issues have most likely been related to a roof leak adjacent to the chimney. (Had the roof repaired in 2019!) The first estimate blamed the flashing, and bid $2000 for the flashing and a plywood/shingles replacement. A second estimate with a different roofer found NO issues with the flashing but said there was no cap - estimated charges $400. (I liked the 2nd bid better, but even I could see the flashing was rusted out.) Finally, the first contractor proposed replacing the brick chimney & flashing with a B-vent, requiring the coordinated assistance of my HVAC people - the best estimate was 2 grand for the roofer and not more than $1000 for the furnace folks. My final charges:$2850. I was fuming when I completed the review - assigning only 2 stars. (I've spent thousands of $ on roof repair and furnace servicing and the leak was probably present before I bought the home!) But that is NOT THEIR FAULT!! Before the ink could dry on my review Nathan, DeK Mech's man that oversaw the project, was at my door to find out what he (they) did wrong! Nothing. They did nothing wrong. They did it ALL RIGHT. Arrived an hour before originally scheduled, performed their work efficently and worked as a team with the roofers. Our technician, Roman, came out after another company told us we needed a new system and quoted us $6K. Roman was extremely thorough, and advised that our gas was set way too high, which was why our heat was auto shutting off. We need different filters and maintenance, to the tune of less than $300. We purchased the maintenance plan with them, and will never use anyone else. These guys are honest, and I will recommend them to anyone that asks.

Really shady scam operating out of Aurora, IL area. Called them asking them to send a tech for…read morefurnace tuneup and who is qualified to install a T10+ thermostat kit to furnace, AC, and humidifier. It wasn't that I couldn't handle it myself, but rather to have Honeywell warranty the unit, a certified tech must install it. Well, the tech they sent, Brandon, not only wasn't qualified to install the kit, but also had no knowledge of this kit at all. But after looking at the box, said it would cost about $20-$30 to install on top of the $149 furnace tuneup. I agreed saying I can afford the $200 total. Since I had another contractor working on our 2nd floor, I let Brandon work in the basement on the HVAC equipment. When I came back down to the first floor a couple hours later, I saw the Buchner truck outside still. When I went to the basement, I found Brandon sitting on the floor reading the manual. Mind you, he never said he was charging more than the $200 I approved. He had apparently been unable to get the humidifier to power on. It seems he had decided to change the humidifier to being powered by the furnace, which is not compliant with Honeywell authorized procedure for that unit. When he had Honeywell support on speakerphone, the specifically told him he couldn't power it from furnace, and to reconnect it to the transformer it was originally on. After ending the call, he still didn't tell me he was charging me more than $200, so I went back up to the contractor two floors up. Finally, four hours later, I had to go to work. At five hours, he hands my wife an invoice for $900 for the work. But that's not all, he also tells us the humidifier board is dead, even though it had been running with no issue prior to Brandon arriving. Of course I refuse to pay the $900 invoice and call Buchner. When they have the Service Manager call me, he tells me that Brandon never said it was $20-$30 to install the kit and that Brandon is competent and wouldn't damage the humidifier from working on it. The manager finally agreed to send his other tech, Tony, to diagnose the equipment, no charge only after I inquired. Tony comes out later in the week with my wife home. He determines that "Brandon did not land one of the humidifier wires correctly and that the equipment is now online. But during conversation with my wife calls her a liar when she says that Brandon never said he was charging us beyond the $200 we agreed to until he handed her the $900 invoice. About a week later, I get an updated invoice from Buchner in the mail for $181, which I called them to pay immediately. I figured they must have agreed that Brandon had made one or more mistakes, and was doing the right thing. Oh was I wrong! A couple weeks later, I'm trying to clean up the loose humidistat wires that are supposedly not connected anymore because it is now wirelessly digital instead of wired analog. WRONG! As soon as two wires touched, I see an electrical arc, and my new thermostat goes dark. I immediately call Buchner, but the answering service says there is a note in their system to not service our address. She tells me to call Monday, which I do. The primary secretary tells me they "discounted" the work they did and there was a note to no longer service our address and I would have to speak to the Service Manager, which I agreed to do. Well, several days, and no call from them to my phone and no call to wife's phone. So I contact my contractor who is a licensed electrician and plumber, and also fixed a few pre-existing electrical issues in the house already. With his guidance, we identified the problem to be a blown fuse on the furnace board. So to recap: Poor customer service Unqualified HVAC Technician Attempt to commit fraud (charging customer while they teach themselves how to do their job) Attempt to charge nearly 5x the amount they were initially approved for without renewed consent Dishonest techs and Service Manager
