My three kids and I went here on Memorial Day since we had celebrated with family the day before. We had lived in Middletown for year. Drove by here a million times. But never went in. Until the other day and we should have been here much sooner. Service was super friendly. We got the fried calamari to start and it was not greasy and very good. We also got the bbq wings and another win ! My daughter got the Greek salad and that was fresh and yummy. My son got the burger and my other son got the steak sandwich and both raved. The only issue was one mis order. I asked for a turkey blt but got a turkey burger instead with no attempt to correct it. It was still good though. The ambiance is a typical tavern style spot. We were at the bar had a few drinks served at the bar was great and ambience was great We then shifted into the restaurant dining area, and the waiter never came to our table for more than 20 minutes. We were having conversations so we didn't watch the time and then we finally called him over and he thought that another waiter was taken care of our table. We asked for extra napkins. We ate at the bar which was a mixture of locals and transients...we were the latter. Bartenders were quick, efficient, and friendly. I must confess, my expectations weren't so high. But MJ's surprised me. My marg was as tasty, the nachos and guacamole were good and the cheesesteak was quite good. We went to MJ'S on 11/3/24 and the food was pretty good. First off service was good and ambiance was fine. But, the food we got was just okay. The French onion soup was very good, the boneless wings were just okay and the pizza was very good and thin. If you are in the Middletown, Hazlet, Holmdel or Red Bank Area, mabey explore other restaurants around town. But if you are on your way to MJ'S, have a good time and enjoy!! read more

I have come here twice with my family of 4, ( 2 toddlers) myself and my husband. The service is pretty good, the hostess got us sat right away. The ambiance is half bar and half dining room, low lighting, skylight during the daytime and statement wall sconces. The tables are lined with white Kraft paper and they reset the tables each time and table is cleared. They have paper menus, daily specials and a variety of dishes to offer. They also feature special drinks as well. I recommend their wings, their street tacos, and their salads. They also have great ahi tuna, pretty good French fries and my kids love the Mac and cheese. I met some friends at MJ's for Bingo, good time was had. Standard bar food, good wings, cheesesteak egg rolls are excellent, nachos are ok. Mixed Drinks are above par. The bar was crowded and apparently you can reserve seats around the bar which was a bit disappointing as we did not reserve a table. I would have like to have sat in the bar for happy hour 4-6 Monday thru Friday. If I was able to reserve a table in the bar I might go back. The person doing bingo did a great job and I found him entertaining. Service is ok, food takes a while to come out of the kitchen and our waitress took a few sabbaticals. stopped by with family on saturday at 4pm. the place was packed and they were severely understaffed . only two waitresses for the entire restaurant and var area . one was a trainee. only one bartender , no hostess to greet you or bus boys to clean tables. no manager in sight. we waited a very long time to be acknowledged , seated and finally served. i wanted to leave . poorly run business it was bad for customers and very bad for the business. i would have ordered more drinks and food but it took too long. owner is losing money but obviously owner doesn't care read more

MJ's is a NICE bar and grill. Bustling even on a Wednesday at 3:30pm, the menu is pretty extensive and the vibe is pretty cool. Service by Eugene was awesome. Met a friend for early dinner. We shared the nachos which were OK (cheese whiz made them a bit soggy), but the chili bowl that accompanied them was better. My amigo got a burger which looked amazing, and it was huge (cooked perfectly as he asked for medium/well). He said it was outstanding. I got the Ruben, which was supposed to come with corned beef and pastrami. I asked just pastrami and also for mashed potatoes instead of fries. It was excellent. Would definitely go back! read more

Amazing food! Me and my friend go pretty often. Service is always nice, especially the bar tender Craig. The food is always HOT and fresh. We are not big soft pretzel people but for what ever reason it is amazing here. Have yet to try something I did not like, pizza is also very delicious! Been coming here for years. Things continue to decline. Came for the Wednesday wing special. Turns out they are "boneless" wings. The real ones are regular price. So we tried the special. They were breaded chicken nuggets dipped in sauce. Tasteless and dry probably frozen. got there during happy hour. Asked the waitress which drafts were on special. We have been here so many times. Friday, we had a 6:30 reservation, we got a table right away the server took our drink and food order. The bar was 3 least three deep all the way around, the dining room was packed. We got our drinks, waited for the food which was 2 wraps, and a steak sandwich, not a full meal mind you, and we waited and waited. 2 drinks later and at 7:45 we decided to leave, when we were told it would another 10 minutes. Paid the $45.00 bar bill which pissed me off, no dinner and left. They also were probably in violation with the amount of people in there, the kitchen is a poor functioning mess and the staff while very pleasant, is certainly over worked. There are five MJ's that I know of in NJ. There's ample parking in this location(Middletown) so it was easy to find a space even though it was quite busy. I got here before my party arrived, ordered a beer at the bar. I was greeted by a pleasant barman. After a few minutes, my party arrived and we all sat down at a table in the dining room. Our server,Danielle, came over immediately and offered us her timely prepared speech. This time of year is New Jersey tomato time and on the menu was an appy that I had to have: fresh mozzarella with Jersey ripe tomatoes, crispy lettuce , raw onions drizzled with balsamic vinegar. It was excellent. What made it better was the toasted bread which I could dip in the balsamic. It was a nice size. They have quite a variety of American fare. My party ordered burgers, which were very good according to them. A lot of other diners had pizza. Three & one half stars. read more

Finally a Bar and Restaurant in Middletown with a touch of originality, fresh made food and it is not a national chain! MJ's renovated the old Giovanni's on 35 and the place looks amazing! They also have a location in Tinton Falls but I have not visited this establishment but it has been getting really good reviews. Manager said they brought the same recipes over to Middletown. Staff is friendly, service is fast and consistent the four times we have been their the past two weeks. Bar area is a decent size and beer list varied, bottle and draft. This past weekend the bar was packed and they offer live music Friday and Saturday nights (there may be weekday entertainment as well). Was not aware of any drink specials, though I am sure there are some. Pint of Magic Hat and Troegs can run a bit steep @ $5.50 not sure of prices on macro draft/bottle. Menu is varied, Burgers, Sandwiches and Pizza also a nice assortment of chops and seafood. Pizza is great, I recommend the Margherita. You have a choice of thin crust, regular and whole wheat. Burgers also hit the spot and sandwiches deliver. Have not sampled any entrees yet but the Lobster Mac and Cheese with Guinness Cheddar sounds delicious! Parking was a bit tough Friday night but it was to be expected, its still their grand opening. Prices seem average for the area, though the apps were a bit pricey for just being appetizers. Lunch comes in at about $9 - $10 per person (sandwich, burger, wrap, salad, etc). I wish MJ's the best and hope to write another positive review in the future! read more

I don't know which one I visited previously, but the logo made me stop at this one. I had three amazing things, two that surprised me. The martini was great! Not cocktail lounge great, but pretty close. What surprised me was both the stratischellu I mean stracciatella soup. Yes I googled it. It was generous and exactly what you'd hope for on a cold day... But light... perfect soup when you also want to eat something else... get the bowl, it's not filling but very tasty.The burgers looked tempting but I ordered the Ahi Tuna salad that fit my "diet" but that also had under estimated. Wow. This was amazing. The fish was the fish... perfect but kinda pass/ fail... But the dressing and the veg?!?!?! The fresh ginger and roasted pepper was among other magic that made me want to lick the bowl or order another... I love when an apparent "roadside" joint delivers on food. And Drink. read more

A neighborhood bar type place with food everyone will love. At with tv's for watching sports. Lots of activity around the bar. Wonderful bar pie and good burgers. Been here 3 times and probably won't go back. Went last night - got a table quickly, but we weren't even acknowledged for 15 minutes! Finally a server came by (after talking to people at a table behind us socially for 10 minutes). Food was not up to par. Manager comes by to apologize for our wait, but offers nothing. He could've offered to pay for our appetizer at least. Not a good experience. Would not recommend. Came here 2/3/19 super bowl Sunday. It could not have sucked more!!!
