We were looking for something quick while we were at the Jackalope Art Fair. Did not want a big meal, so decided to try their burger, I know at a Hawaiian food spot? Typically would live a BBQ mix plate, but did not want left overs. The burger was excellent I must say, it was large, had great flavor, I think it picked up some of the flavor from the other BBQ meats they cook. Lettuce, tomato, onions, a complete solid burger. Recommended. We also got a basic side salad, with a sesame dressing, it was good, decent side garden salad. We also got a couple orders of fries, which were a let down to me, over cooked and the flavor just was not there. I wish we would have save the $8 for the two orders of fries, which I think even if good was a bit high for French fries. They have a burger by itself, or a combo that comes with fries and a drink. If you just want fries, you order the burger and then the fry, no special deal, but as I said, I would skip the fries and get some spam musubi or Mac salad or anything else. They also have a thing of Jalapeños, garlic and onions you can get yourself, I really like them. They were very busy, staff seemed a little overwhelmed, but they did a good job and seemed nice enough. They have a small interior with tables and a couple outside in front under a thatched umbrella, good touch. The location is great, right on San Fernando and 2nd I believe, near the theater and all the shopping. Enjoy! read more

We were in the area when we spotted Moana Hawaiian BBQ and decided to give it a try. I'm glad we did. Parking was easy thanks to the free public parking garage nearby, which made the visit even more convenient. We ordered the Chicken Katsu and the Beef Rib plate. From the first bite, we could tell this place was different. I usually think most Hawaiian BBQ spots taste pretty similar, but not here. There was something special about the food that made it stand out in a good way. The chicken katsu was crispy and flavorful, and the beef rib was tender and delicious. What really surprised us were the sides. The pickled jalapeños were fantastic and added a nice kick to the meal. The macaroni salad was also excellent. Honestly, everything on the plate was good. Service was friendly and quick, and our food came out fast. It can get busy here and loud. Small place. My only complaint is the rice portion. The plate came with only one scoop of rice, and I was hoping for two scoops. The food was so good that I wanted a little more rice to go with it. Also, forgot to take full photo of food, we forgot to snap before eating it. Overall, great food, great service, and a pleasant surprise. We'll definitely be back the next time we're craving Hawaiian BBQ. read more

9.9/10 I finally tried Moana Hawaiian Barbecue and went straight for my go-to .... the Chicken Katsu. Let me just say, this instantly tied for one of my favorite Hawaiian spots in LA. The chicken itself was next-level extra crunchy on the outside, perfectly juicy inside, and super fresh. Honestly, the texture and crispiness even beat out Ono Hawaiian, which has been my longtime favorite. The portion here is generous too with noticeably more chicken than Ono's plate (though you're also paying about $5 more ). Now for the details Ono's Katsu sauce edges Moana's slightly for me -- it's a bit richer, and their mac salad also has a touch more flavor. That said, Moana's version is still excellent, and the overall quality of the chicken puts them head-to-head in my book. It's rare that I'm so critical of a new food place so my hope is that my attempts to stay constructive will be noted. While the smell coming from this place immediately interested me, the service and food were immensely lackluster. The person taking out order was almost dazed and confused taking our order and didn't actually have an answer to a question about substituting a side of one thing for another. He claimed that no one had ever asked him that before and while that was eyebrow raising, the food was completely bland. While the burger was definitely cooked, it almost tasted like I was eating a blob of meat that had the texture of slime. It's weird though, being that there was no red to the inside of the burger it should have been well to well done but lacked any flavor or dare I say seasoning. The fries that came with it also had very little seasoning save for a few specks of salt I saw. Even the watermelon slushie drink they have to try was just way too sweet. I don't think I'll ever comeback but it's rare that something like this happens. My hope is that there's a chance for something to happen for the better here. read more

Very delicious Hawaiian BBQ Chicken every time I come to chow down here. Portions have gotten smaller over the years, well I guess everywhere but always delicious chicken. Love the macaroni salad it is so addicting! Price has gone up, as everything else but wish the price would match the quantity, the quality I have no issues with. Service always really good and quick. It's been a few years (2013) since I was last here to eat, the last last time I ate here, I didn't care for their food quality or quantity so I've avoided this place. I recently came across the place and decided to check them out to see if thing's has improved. They've redecorated and the place seems cleaner so I decided to try them out again. Still good but now even better! I think this fast casual Hawaiian bbq joint trumps all the rest. Their portions are good, everything is tasty, and it's quality food. Lots and lots of options here. The $10 price point for plates is no longer since my last review 9 years ago but for $16 it's still a good plate of food. This time I'm recommending the Hawaiian Bbq spicy chicken plate. I wish I could give this place a rating more thank 2 stars as the person in the store was super nice but the quality and quantity of the food and the prices don't match what I expect. This Hawaiian BBQ restaurant is my favorite place to go get Hawaiian BBQ. Their food is always consistently good and flavorful. I usually order their Hawaiian BBQ mix plate, which comes with short ribs, beef, and chicken, potato salad, and rice. I also love their mango, chicken, and avocado salad. Everything always tastes freshly made. The service is good. You have to order your food before you sit down. They have space inside to sit down and eat there, and also one or two small tables outside. I've been here a few times -- not regularly, but whenever I'm in the area. Some visits have been fine, others not so much. The experience really depends on who's working the register. One cashier in particular (a skinny white guy who wears a backward hat and usually all blue) made me uncomfortable. His attitude didn't feel welcoming, and the interaction wasn't very disability-friendly. It also didn't feel inclusive or respectful toward AAPI (including Hawaiian/Pacific Islander) or LGBTQ+ customers. On the other hand, Leslie the young lady, another cashier, was better -- friendly, respectful. The difference in attitude between staff is very noticeable. The food itself was just okay -- nothing special, kind of "meh." price was ridiculously overpriced. I was also confused by the Bible displayed on the wall, because the behavior and atmosphere didn't match the values it represents, the white skinny guy (cashier ordering) and the Asian owner, the "GRUMPY" lady and other too- it puzzled me, felt like very hypocrite. The restroom was a major issue. It smelled really grossed, and the walls and floors felt sticky and unclean. I avoid using it and go elsewhere nearby instead like Burbank mall or Slice House. Pretty good Hawaiian spot in downtown Burbank! I've passed by this place a bunch and finally tried this. I was getting a massage down the street so I ordered food when I was done. Got the BBQ plate and two spamasubis. The later on the phone said it would take 10 minutes, so I took my time to walk over there. When I got there I paid for the food - the guy said they were prepping it. I went to the restroom and when I came out I saw my food, but no one gave it to me. Waited a few minutes then when the lady was free, asked if that was my food. She tried to ring me up but then realized I already paid. Took my food home and my family and I ate dinner. The seafood combo comes with fried shrimp and fish, either bbq chicken or katsu, 2 scoops rice and 1 scoop Mac salad and cabbage. It's a HUGE serving, plenty for 2-3 people. Ooof. Passed by this establishment today and wondered if they sold any malasadas. I asked the young lady and the older man next to her and they had no clue as to what they were. I told them in the simplest terms they were Hawaiian donuts. No clue and brushed it off as if it were some strange word.
