Mochi + gelato = mochilato. That's exactly what I got. Need a quick sugar fix and decided to try this place out. I just got one mochilato in guava and the BF got one in mango. It was so hard to decide since there was so many flavors. I asked which one they would recommend... they didn't help much in answering. They indirectly pretty much said that they would recommend everything. It was $1.25 for one. It was good except the gelato melted pretty fast. The mochi was really soft but overall, it tasted exactly what we asked for. I would come back if I had a small sugar craving. My friend took me here for dessert and it was awesomme. It was the first time I've had mochi ice cream with gelato. They have over 10-15 different kinds of mochi ice cream that are a $1.50 each. They also have ice cream and other Japanese pastries there. The physical features of the place is very modern and nice. As soon as you walk in, there are big tables, probably enough for groups of 4-6. It looks like a good place to study or chat with your friends. The guy working here (I believe he was the owner) was very friendly and quietly waited for us to pick out desserts because it was our first time there. We came here this weekend! And it was super good! I loved the shaved ice from here! So basically this is how it works, when you walk there, they have this super cool looking interior, and from the outside you wouldn't be able to tell that this place was actually some sort of secret lair for shaved ice. So getting on with my story, after you walk in here, and you get to the front counter with by the way is in the back. You look up at the menu, and you can pick what you want to eat. We decided to get the shaved ice Mochilato's Way! Mochilato's Way is topped off with red beans, with shaved ice, which is green, and on the sides there is strawberry, kiwis, and bananas! And when you get to the center there is ice cream, and towards the bottom there is more red beans, and red ice! It's so freaking amazingly good! I would definitely come back here again! I came here when it first opened in 2011! I've been coming here for years. It's 2014 now and it has kept up and improved over time! Honestly, I'm not one for mochi, but this is an exception! What a cute lil' place my friend and I came across one night while depositing some money in the BofA on Walnut and Culver. The friendly lady behind the register, Nikki, told us that this place just opened a week ago. Good thing too, cuz Irvine was in SERIOUS NEED of a great shaved ice place! This place is very unique in that its ice cream mochis are filled with GELATO instead of the typical ice cream. Definitely gives it a creaminess that sets it apart from most other mochis. There are soo many different flavors to choose from - from the fruity mango mochis to the heavier hazelnut ones. They are about $1.25 a piece (kind of pricey) but you can mix and match a box of 6. This store also sells regular mochi, shaved ice, coffee drinks, and various asian breads. The interior is very chic and modern, nice wooden floors and tables gives this place a classic feel. The tables are long and wide, I envision myself coming here to get my study on... unless this place gets too popular and turns into another typical, crowded hangout place. read more

The gelato here are pretty decent but pricey. I've ordered a 2 scoop flavor small size cup, my choices were Coffee gelato and Stacciatella gelato. The Coffee gelato had a dark taste close to grind coffee flavor which is not bad and the Stacciatella was oh well? Stacciatella? whatever the hell that is?! but it's chocolate chippy and is on the icy side. The downside was that it's not as smooth like other gelato I've tried and it's almost comparable to regular ice cream because of its thickness. The upside was that they tasted good and are still fun to eat, but I'm not sure I would like to shell out almost $8 bones for a smaller two scoop. Came here late on a weekday night and it was surprisingly crowded! Thankfully, we were able to snag a table inside. They have some outdoor seating as well. Between the 3 of us, we decided to share a Mochilato-style shaved ice. The shaved ice was ready in about 5 minutes, and it looked delicious!! Everything was beautifully arranged, and you get a good variety of fruits: bananas, strawberries, kiwis, mango, etc. The green tea shaved ice is topped with red bean and mochi, and there's a decently-sized scoop of vanilla bean ice cream in the middle of it all. For me, the shaved ice was just okay. The fruits were good and I loved the red bean and how the flavors complemented the green tea shaved ice very well, but the ice itself was not smooth at all, and by the time we got to the bottom, we were just staring at a huge ice chunk. So overall, the flavors in the shaved ice were good, but the texture was not that great. I'd recommend going to Class 302 instead. The mochi gelatos are heaven in a few bites. The only thing is that I don't crave them often than I should. I should be craving them everyday, actually, if it weren't for their price. They are pretty pricey for just one piece ($1.25). I don't want to sound like a cheap-skate or anything, but when I go there, there are just too many flavors I would like to try out that my wallet can not handle. Poor, poor me (and I mean that literally). If I were to recommend any flavors, my first place winner would be mango (there were several times when I would visit Mochilato at night and all their mango mochilatos have been sold out). Compared to the mochis that are filled with ice-cream, the ones at mochilato are more soft and the texture of the mochi and the gelato inside sort of make it difficult to eat because the entire thing becomes so flexible between the tips of your fingers. I also bought a few of their baked goods or pastries they sell for my mother. Those goods are also pretty pricey. My total for 3 mochilatos and 3 of the small goods turned out to be $9.00. I haven't tried anything else at Mochilato except of the gelato-filled mochis, but those alone, are well worth the visit to this place, especially if you or a friend have never tried it before. ATMOSPHERE: It's pretty big inside with big tables so it's good for groups and you order at the counter like a regular ice cream place and then you sit down with your stuff. FOOD: People come here for the shaved ice or the mochi ice creams. The mochi ice creams are just like the kind you get at Trader Joes with ice cream inside of a chewy outside skin. To be honest, it's not that special to me because you can get it at trader joes and the ones here are not any more or less special. I guess the only plus is that they have different flavors. The ice cream inside tended to be on the softer side and I like mine firm. Their shaved ice is meh. THeir toppings are kind random, bananas and kiwis with the graham cracker kind of dust and their mochi was fairly chewy but overall I'd much rather go get shaved snow nearby at Class 302 or Guppy House Shaved Ice. It's just not..special and just seems like a hodge podge of stuff thrown on top of ice with condensed milk. Would you believe me if I said I had the best Korean short rib tacos at this mochi establishment? No, I have not tried Kogi truck food, but I strongly believe Mochilato's tacos would be able to compete. Tender meat, spicy slaw (if you can't handle spicy foods, I would advise against ordering these tacos) , and soft corn tortilla. Squeeze a lime and go to town! I couldn't leave this place without trying at least one mochi flavor. My cousin chose guava and it did not disappoint. I avoid hypes for as much as I can before I give in. And when I do give in, which is almost every time, I have to wonder what all the hype is about in the first place. Mochilato is a cute concept. A little ice cream eatery selling "unique" items such as a variety of mochi ice cream, shaved ice, and the more ordinary gelato. There's really nothing too unique about Mochilato coming from a culture that have already perfected shaved ice. But they have their specialty shaved ice which includes a center of gelato and flavored syrup on top. It's just not my style especially for $10. As for mochi ice cream - well, I discovered that a long time ago at Chinese grocery stores and even at Trader Joe's, so really nothing too special. The only thing this place offers is the variety of flavors. However, I can appreciate this place for having gelato since I crave a creamy concoction once in a while and it's not too far from where I live. read more

With all the dessert and drink places popping up in Irvine, nothing about Mochilato really stood out for me. They have a variety of things to choose from including food, cream puffs, shaved ice, and macarons, but unfortunately it's pretty pricey in my opinion. Mochi ice cream is $2 a piece, which is silly since you can get a box of 6 for about $4-5 at Mitsuwa or 99 Ranch. Their macarons are $2 each as well - pricier than most places. I ordered the shaved ice, Italian style, which had strawberry flavored shaved ice with vanilla gelato topped with mango, kiwi, strawberry, and banana. The smallest size was already $8.95, but it's enough for 2 people to share. It's visually beautiful and was tastier than I thought it would be. However, it melted wayyy too fast, which is weird because I've had plenty of shaved ice and snowflake ice and never had this problem before. Half of the dessert became a pool of strawberry liquid with floating fruit pieces in no time at all. Really disappointing! Overall, I give this place 3 stars because of its variety, the lovely presentation of my dessert, and just the overall atmosphere. As far as Asian shave ice goes, this is the best tasting! Took 1 star off because the price is too expensive, $7.12 for the smallest size. Granted the smallest size is still enough for 2 to share, $7 for shave ice just doesn't work for me. I got the Barista way junior sized shave ice, the ice itself is coffee flavored, topped with red bean, strawberries, banana slices, condensed milk. There is also supposed to be shaved chocolate and coffee gelato in there, but I couldn't really taste it, the red bean way overpowers any shaved chocolate in there. Gelato melts faster than ice cream, so dig into the bottom if you want to taste the gelato, otherwise it melts into the ice and you won't know it's even there. The mochilatos are GOOD! but at $1.25 per piece, still too expensive for me, rather get the $4.99/6 boxed mochi ice cream at Asian grocery stores. If I'm in the neighborhood I may stop by for a piece, but would not go out of my way to come here. There are also some heavy construction going on in this shopping plaza until Fall 2011. read more

The Mochilato (mochi with gelato) here is quite a treat! The Tiramisu flavor was delicious. I enjoyed the mango flavor as well. Peach tasted like medicine syrup =/ The shaved ice looks like pat bing su (Korean style) and not the Taiwanese style. I'm pretty sure the store is Korean owned because all the desserts are very Korean style. The ambiance of the store is nice (it's still open even though the outside is remodeling!) Mochi?! Gelato?! Words can't explain the awesomeness when you combine the two. Boasting 22 flavors, it's easy to get caught up in the delicious plethora of little pastel-colored mochi in front of you. Besides mochi, they also have ice cream waffles, traditional Japanese sweets, shaved ice and macaroons. I had a hard time choosing which flavors to get but I settled on mint chocolate chip, cookies and cream and peaches and cream. The mint chocolate chip mochi was pretty good, tasted exactly like the ice cream and the powdery, sweet mochi skin was a perfect complement. The cookies and cream mochi wasn't so good, and tasted kind of weird with the mochi skin. Maybe cookies and cream is better served in a regular cone. Now, the peaches and cream mochi was just divine. It tasted like real peaches and cream; I was surprised by how well the fruity, sweet flavor went with the mochi skin. I'm not even a huge consumer of mochi ice cream, since my teeth are quite sensitive. But I enjoyed this enough to say that Mochilato is fun, innovative and just plain delicious! After a really full meal down the Plaza, we walked our full bellies over to Mochilato Cafe. What seemingly a short distance had us take several minutes to arrive at our destination. We could've been rolled down there for how stuffed we felt. When we finally arrived to their door, it was about 8:45 pm and the place was packed! We all went to see what was waiting for us in the back of the store as there is ALWAYS room for desserts SOMEHOW! It's amazing how full one can be yet feel so empty to make room for desserts. I could NEVER answer that question. Anyhow...we stared and stared at the rows and shelves of treats. Mochilatos, gelatos, macarons EVERYWHERE! We wanted everything. Okay, I wanted everything on each row. But we settle for gelatos (coffee, red velvet, green tea, fresh lime and chocolate). I'm a huge fan of gelatos so I found my COMFORT Zone...I was happy. We shared everything so I was a super happy camper! I thought their gelatos were good but def not the best I've had in OC but good enough. I didn't taste or stumbled upon ice after ice in some bad cases of having gelatos. Mochilato's was pretty smooth but mild on the flavor. Never again. I heard about this place from a friend, and despite reading some of the reviews, I decided to try it out. The first thing I noticed when I came into this restaurant was that it was HOT. Like, at least 5-10 degrees hotter than outside. And it was REALLY stuffy. And I was only wearing a tank and a jacket too. When I walked up to the counter, I was slightly confused as to where I should order. I say this because customers were at the register, at the macaron area, and at the gelato area, and it seemed like people were not being served in the order they came. And I was ignored for a bit, and a few people who came after me got helped first. When someone finally helped me out, I ordered four macarons and a waffle cup mint chocolate gelato (it didn't even look like they had any mochi out, as that area was empty. That plus another small gelato cost ~$17. The gelato was alright, although the taste and texture were nothing special. I could have gotten the same at cheaper places. The waffle cone came out of a pre-packaged bag. I thought they would be making their own, but I guess not. Do they even make their own gelato? The macarons. Hands down the worst I've had. The earl grey tasted horrible. Had a REALLY bitter aftertaste, and tasted too much like chocolate. Too much filling for the amount of cookie. Also tried the pistachio. Even worse. The filling tasted very manufactured (not fresh), and the cookie itself was undercooked. I wish I took a picture to post on here, but I ended up eating one bite and throwing the rest out the window. I still have a black currant one and a taro one, but at this point I'm debating on even trying those flavors. For gelato, I'd much rather go to gelato paradiso. For macarons, I'd much rather go to Layer Cake or Lette's. I usually come here with a friend, order six different flavors and cut each in half to try. Although it's difficult with a plastic knife it's worth it. For a quick sweet fix after a weekday lunch, a buddy and I stopped by here to try out their mochi ice cream - Yes, the kind you get at some Japanese restaurants for desert. Needless to say, they were delicious and they had some great flavors that I am dying to go back and try next time. At 1.25 each, they don't break the bank for a quick bite. The Italian Shaved Ice from Mochilato is decadent, yet light. I small scoop of vanilla gelato hides under a mound of shaved ice dressed with sweet strawberries, kiwi, mango, ripe banana, sweetened condensed milk and natural strawberry syrup. It is, quite possibly, the best shaved ice in OC. The Original Cream Puff and Chocolate Eclair Cream puffs at Mochilato also impress. The crusty and light puffs are filled with mild and milky creme anglaise. The Mochilato House Dumplings are gigantic...about the size of your palm! They are filled with pork, beef, chives, onions and bean sprouts. These hefty dumplings felt odd in my mouth. The filling had a rough consistency, due to massive amounts of chopped onion and chives. The shape of the dumpling and the pasta were nice. However, it was not enough to redeem the humble dumpling. Stick to the sweets at Mochilato. Find "real food" elsewhere. read more

The two main reason I come here is for Beard papa cream puffs and the mochilato. The cream in the puff is divine - not too sweet and hints of real vanilla with every bite. And what's not to love about gelato wrapped mochi? The mochi tastes fresh and the flavors are seemingly uncontrived - it's just simple and delicious. I was so happy to see a mochi parlor around Irvine! I haven't seen any other mochi parlor besides Bubbies in Hawaii! Even better, this cute little parlor sells gelato, shaved ice, and baked goods! I like mochi. I like gelato. I like mochi with gelato IN IT. :O HAHAHA. They have a huge variety of flavors and it's always fun to try something new each time I go. They also serve just plain gelato.. Or if anything, macarons, taiyaki, creme puffs and coffee. I think even sandwiches? Like lunch foods. The servers here are pretty nice too. I would normally refer to dessert that has ice cream wrapped in mochi as "mochi ice cream". But here it's gelato instead of ice cream, hence - Mochilato. Oooh, it took me a couple repeats of the name for this concept to sink in. It's a pleasant experience. The staff working here is happy and friendly. They have many flavors of Mochilato to choose from, I ended up getting 4 (strawberry, green tea, pistachio, chocolate hazelnut) which was way too many for me. If you don't like mochi, you can get just gelato. They also had Beard Papas which are cream puffs, light pastries filled with custard. I had one of those too, yikes! All the dessert I had was good, pretty unique place as I don't know many places where you can get this kind of variety. Also nice bonus is lots of seating and free water served in plastic jugs.
