We're gringos, so we can't vouch for the authenticity of the cuisine. But we're also foodies from the wine country of Northern California, where amazing restaurants abound, and this place is world class. Definitely not your standard enchiladas rice and beans. Oh sure, you can order that, but be prepared for inventive, unusual, and delicious takes on the typical Mexican fare. The service was excellent, the ambiance warm and comfortable. The place is clearly very popular, maybe partially due to the cocktails, Margaritas, tequilas and mezcal, just as creative as the food. I was staying with a friend who lives nearby and even after a whole week of eating primarily Mexican/ Mexi-fusion food- I was still down for Mochilero Kitchen. Another friend of ours got here before us and put our name down for a table. I heard that wait times can be a bit long, so be prepared for that! We got seated outside in their patio section which is great for groups! When we were eating, there was a party celebrating someone getting into medical school (congrats!). Mochilero Kitchen has a fun environment conclusive for good conversations and a good time. Happy hour is Tuesday-Friday 2:30pm-6pm with $8 signature cocktails, and appetizers like ceviche, guacamole, queso and chips also on happy hour special. I can see this spot being great for after-work happy hour drinks and apps! For drinks, I ordered the "cucumbero" a cucumber spicy margarita. This drink was properly spicy with a real kick to it and I loved it. I actually saw that my friend Phia S's review and she ordered the cucumbero, so I had to order the cucumbero! For appetizers we shared the esquites, roasted corn, crema, cotija cheese, guajillo pepper, lime and their chips and guac. For food, I ordered their taco trio that comes with beans and rice. I ordered 2 premium tacos which are an extra $1.50 each. I got the carne asada, baja fish, and chicken lingua. My favorite was the fish taco. We visited the establishment on a Sunday and the restaurant had a steady flow of diners, and a reservation was not needed. We started off with guacamole, which did not disappoint! The guacamole was rich in flavor and had pomegranate seeds which elevated the taste. A bonus was the plantain chips that came with the appetizer. They were perfectly seasoned! Worst service experience. After ordering drinks and appetizers, we didn't see our waiter. The tables to each side of us were seated at the same time or after sat down. We watched a different server take their orders and served their main courses without a visit from our server. He was busy visiting with the hostesses at the entrance. I've been here 3 times in the past week. First time, I took a friend visiting from North Carolina, the second time, my hubby came with me, and the third time, I dragged my hubby back a few days later. If that doesn't say how much I enjoy this place, I don't know what will! David O. has been our server every single time. He was amazing in spite of being short handed that day, and I'm so grateful for that! He's definitely a hard worker and great with everything! The spicy margaritas are probably what I crave most from this place! I usually order 2 every time I go! My friend enjoyed the Paloma as well. As far as appetizers go, we always order the Mochilero guac, which comes with plantain chips! I use these plantains to dip in the guac which uniquely has pineapple by the way, AND we also order the esquites (roasted and seasoned corn goodness) and dip them in that. You should also get the Brussel sprouts. So good!! For brunch, I usually get the chilaquiles with short rib meat and the Verde sauce and eggs over easy. I've had this twice and find it difficult to order something else. For lunch or that period between lunch and dinner because I like going when times are off, I like the tacos. My last combo had the carne Asada, shrimp Diablo, and potato tacos. I also ate my hubby's carñitas tacos and enjoyed them as well. Cheers to having a local, scrumptious eatery to enjoy in the northwest valley! The interior is gorgeous too for hanging out and the patio is awesome with this gorgeous 70 degree weather right now. I always say, if you are at a Mexican restaurant and the salsa is no bueno, then you know you won't be getting great food! they have a mild red roasted salsa . you can ask for a hotter ghost pepper salsa but i was fine with what we had! I am pleasantly surprised and super happy there is another decent option in Northwest Phoenix / Peoria. Mochilero makes some really creative cocktails and some darn tasty tacos. What impressed me most was how well the staff handled a super busy Friday night. They are well run and the staff is friendly even when they are slammed with hungry guests demanding tacos. The food was excellent. I especially liked the house made chicharrones. I paired them with the queso for a low carb starter. Tacos were good, but not the best in the world. For cocktails, I had a "Mexico City Something" that was fantastic. I don't remember exact name but it was Mescal, Rye, chocolate bitters and cherry bitters served with a luxardo. Fantastic spot for a family brunch. They have great mimosa bottle special for Sunday - with 3 juices. Large airy dining room with great glass windows. Our party of 8 had reservations for the patio, however, we discovered we were displaced and moved inside without notice. They should have called to let us know of the change. A manager visited our table to apologize and said the GM had a last minute 'thing' and took the patio for 38 people. It was disappointing but we had no choice in the matter. They brought us complimentary ceviche for the table. Unfortunately only two at the table could eat it. We had two vegan, two children and two non-seafood eaters. Thankfully I enjoyed it very much. It was excellent ceviche. The carne asada in the tacos was amazing. The street corn appetizer was rich and flavorful. Their bowls are a wild combination of flavors that you will crave again until your next brunch visit. My husband and stepdad had breakfast burritos. One chorizo and the other bacon. Large burritos for large appetites, yet picky eaters. My veggie heads had mushroom and potato tacos and the other had a veggie bowl. They said their food was excellent. The kids had the kids waffle, which kept them quiet. Mom had the barbacoa bowl with an over medium fried egg on top. The meat is amazing. The recovery for being displaced for our reservation was well-meaning and I believe they genuinely were apologetic for the issue that was really out of their control but it could have been handed a little better. So happy there is finally a new family owned Mexican place by our home! We decided to support our local business tonight for Cinco de mayo and it was delicious! We called in our order (I wasn't able to pre-call and schedule our order) and I was told it would be ready in 1 hour (dinner time). You can order online too, but I decided to just call in to make sure the details were clear. We got 3 tacos, shrimp Diablo Bowl, plantain chips & guacamole, a side of salsa and the Prickly Pear Margarita. They are also doing a free bonus where if you spend $25 or more you get 2 free Mexican sodas! (Go like them on Facebook and Instagram!). We went to go pick up our food and this place was busy! But that's a good thing! Our food was ready in 1 hour as stated! The kitchen staff was rockin and rolling and working so hard! The whole team was working like crazy! This is a Mexican Style Restaurant located next to Christ Church of the Valley in Peoria. At this time they opened during the pandemic and are only offering a portion of their menu. We tried the chicken pibil bowl, short rib bowl, papa bravo taco and chips and salsa. Our mutual favorite was the potato taco (papa bravo). It was flavorful, a little spicy and delicious! It seemed like something might have been missing from the bowls. the proteins in the bowls were cooked nicely and everything seemed fresh but there was very little flavor in the rice and beans and absolutely nothing on the lettuce. I normally would give three stars for this kind of experience but these are the worst of times and this restaurant will offer some amazing sounding dishes that I want to try when they fully open like Chula Swordfish, esquites with chitepin, shishitos with corn smut and esplette. 3 stars but rounded up because of potential and opening during these times. read more

Let's start with the prices -- they're really just ridiculous. $7 for a street taco?! I get it, North Peoria is boujie but not THAT boujie. If you're gonna charge these crazy prices at least increase your portion size. The amount of food you get on a plate at this place for $16 is really quite laughable. Next up -- the flavors. Wait.. what flavors?! I haven't had one thing on the menu that impressed me with the flavor profile. The meat is dry, chewy and clearly not cooked with expert hands. The sauces and salsa is bland and boring. For a place this pricey, I expect A HECK-OF-A-LOT more flavor than what these guys bring to the table. Lastly -- we all know that chips and salsa are a standard FREE item at a Mexican establishment. But, here? Nah... they get you for another $5 bucks. The decor is impressive from the huge wooden ceiling light fixture to the illuminated map of Mexico covering an entire wall, eye catching, not tacky, you could tell the design elements were equally as important as the food quality and presentation. We recently moved to the neighborhood and are trying out the nearby spots, one by one. We stopped in on a Saturday afternoon around 2pm- without our kids. The decor is super cute, the tortilla and plantain chips are delicious and made in house, and the service is friendly and attentive. We sat at the bar and Amy had awesome recommendations for us. The avocado toast was surprisingly light. The bread was airy, the spread was light, and the eggs were perfect. If you want a heavy duty avocado toast, this is not the one for you. My usual gripe with Mexican food is that I feel like I ate a lump of dense food when I'm done but I didn't feel that way after my Mochilero meal. My only regret is that I forgot to check the dessert menu. (I'm not sure if there's a kids menu, so I'll check that next time we do a lunch date there, as well.) I was very disappointed in my first experience here. The prices for Mexican food that was below average was way over priced!!!! $18 for Chips salsa and small guacamole. We got the breakfast brunch bowls and shocked on the small portion for $15-$19. My lunch bowl was primarily black beans w small small portion of the beef rib corn etc. I substituted rice and cheese for vegies. They didn't tell me an up charge and brought a small cup of vegies charging me an additional $5.00. The vegies were beyond overcooked not steamed. I called to complain and the manager Ethan said he would credit the vegies and salsa charge but he never did!!! I won't return to this place now.
