PRICE GOUGERS --- Company quoted me price for a part that exceeded any online price I could find. Price quoted was $132 but highest prices online were $32. When I spoke to managements, asking for moderation and consideration, I was told that mark-up was for labor. I was told that Amazon parts don't have warrantees. I watched the tech put in the part. It took all of 5 minutes to remove from box & plug into the slot. And, online parts from legit HVAC stores with warranty --- still cost max of $32. I had called modern air on 2 occasions, once for installing a nest thermostat and inspecting my hvac and another time to troubleshoot heating. I had prompt response both times and the service technicians arrived on time. The first one installed and inspected the thermostat in less than quoted time and charged me only for the actual time. I am a landlord with several properties in Merced. I live in Gilroy, about 90 miles from Merced so I often need to hire contractors without actually meeting them, at least initially. I emailed Modern Air and received a quick response from Valerie and we arranged for the estimator and I to meet at the property that needed a complete re-ducting. Miguel was there on time and he was friendly, attentive and professional. He patiently answered all of my questions and we discussed options. He had an estimate ready 2 days after the meeting and I accepted what was a very reasonable number. Because of the heat in the central valley, the work was scheduled to start at 6am on a Thursday. They arrived right on time and got immediately to work. I arrived several hours into the morning and was very pleased with the work already completed. I stayed until they were wrapping up for the day and was very surprised to see Tuo and Seng meticulously cleaning the house and putting furniture back in place. Awesome! Even though they would be back the next day, the place was completely clean. The crew returned the next morning and the job was completed. I did not even travel to Merced for the last day of work but kept in touch with my tenant. She was thrilled with the work. Here it is now Sunday and I am back in Merced doing other work on the same house - and the AC is just terrific. All the rooms cool nicely and the install is so neat. Obviously I am thrilled with Modern Air's work and I would recommend them without hesitation. And of course I will be using them again as my AC and heating needs dictate. The Modern Air technician came to do a diagnostic check. He found a linking valve and a valve that was clogged, he said with cement. He called his manager and he had the receptionist call with a $2,000 quote and highly recommended to replace the entire unit. I declined. I called another HVAC company and found that the previous technician put a lock on my unit that prevented anyone else to service it. That's against the law. I'm very disappointed that their service stooped that low to gain customer service. Well they failed I will never call them for HVAC service again. read more

I had a fantastic experience with Modern Air of Merced and would recommend them to all with no hesitation. My situation was I owned a rental property. The tenant called in June 2019 advising there was serious leaking taking place. I called Roto Rooter and they came out and after doing $900 worth of work, the leaking returned just over a month later. I called Roto back up and they came out again and explained that they could not help me any further. They explained that since a month had past, they felt they fixed the problem and this must be a new problem. This time they referred me to contact a HVAC specialist rather than doing anything about it. I contacted Modern Air on August 6, 2019 and spoke with Melanie. Fortunately for me Melanie was able to get a technician out to my rental property hours later. The technician's name was Jason. Jason went up into the attic and saw the leaking which was in the same area as the leaking in June. I know this because I also when up in the attic in June and again in August before Modern Air came out. Then Jason went on the roof to the unit and opened it up. Jason explained that there was a lot of dirt and the lines were blocked, he had no doubt this was the problem. Jason blew out the lines and cleaned it all up. The unit is working great, no more leaking because I checked it out again. Thank you Melanie and Jason and the team at Modern Air Merced. I appreciate your promptness and more importantly, not taking advantage of me as a customer and fixing what needed to be fixed. I just had my entire hvac system replaced by Modern Air. Their service and attention to detail was far above and beyond what I expected. Living here in the valley for the past 20 years I have, unfortunately, become accustomed to poor customer service. This company does not fall into that category and excels in every aspect of business. I called other companies for estimates prior to contacting Modern Air. Two never returned my calls and one I'm still waiting on the estimate, three weeks later. Unfortunately for them, they will never have my business. These guys do an OUTSTANDING job. read more

Be aware. This company will try to scam you into buying an HVAC system. I called them to check out my AC as it was tripping the circuit, turned out to be installation inside the housing that fell on the coils causing them to get hot, an easy fix. They then told me there was rust on the heat exchange unit and that they were going to disable my unit and that it needed to be replaced. They quoted a replacement but would not furnish a repair estimate as their opinion was that it should not be fixed. They told me it was leaking CO2 into my house and that my family will get sick from it. The technician never preformed a CO2 test at the vents, did not produce any evidence of a crack in the heat exchanger, and never did a smoke test. The only thing he saw was surface rust. I was able to get the unit working again (After they turned off the gas at the control valve inside) and had PG&E out to test for the presence of CO2 at every vent in my home. There was zero amount present in the house with the heater running. So to summarize. Modern Air came out and tried to scare us into replacing a unit that is in perfect working condition. Very poor and unethical business practices. I will not do business with this company again. read more

I would like to highly recommend Modern Air for your Furnace and A/C needs. We have used time 3 times and will use no other service in our area. Several years ago, we had our A/C go out on our private home and another service company came out and I agreed to a substitute control board. We had problems that summer as the "fan after run" did not work. We called Modern Air and asked for the "oldest Technician" they had. He installed the correct board and unwired the previous work. Our A/C has been perfect since. Yesterday, our rental house has been unable to stay cool for several years after installing a new roof. We've had the system checked previously, and added Attic insulation, but still..... Modern Air's Technician, Robert came out and checked something I would never have thought of, the fan speed. He found a weak capacitor for our fan, changed it out and with the increased speed and some additional Freon our Renters say this house is perfect today. I highly endorse this company! read more

The reviews so far are not consistent with my own experience with Modern Air in the past 2 years. I have had them visit for servicing our A/C, checking on a malfunctioning furnace, and offering a quote for a whole-house fan (3 or 4 times in about 2 years). I have had only excellent experiences. They have been very prompt, both dispatch and techs, and they have been extremely helpful and informative when I ask them questions during their time in our home. In one instance, for example, a tech identified a very simple issue with my furnace and made a series of extremely helpful recommendations to keep the system running smoothly. It seemed he was EAGER to be honest that the system was working quite well, that it didn't need significant service, and he even offered advice for how I myself could save money to keep it going. This is what I look for in a company -- techs who are willing to be honest and helpful despite the bottom line. The service fees seemed fair to me (with my limited experience), and I do feel totally happy with their service. Thanks! read more

If I could give ZERO STAR RATING I would. Service is AWFUL. They are rude and incompetent. Our a/c is not working. First guy that came was extremely rude and should be fired. He clearly hates his job and did not feel like coming to our house at 5pm. He came and complained he needed a latter, complained he needed to shut the attic, and was unprofessional. He said we need a new a/c and nothing else could be done. We got a second opinion by another a/c company. The second a/c company said our issue is correctable and we just need our ducts fixed. Since we have contract with modern air and they worked on our ducts in the past, we contacted them. A modern air duct specialist came today and told us the previous modern air guy did not have experience with ducts and our problem is correctable. He claimed he repaired the problem. However, we are burning up with still no a/c. IT'S AWFUL! Both technicians gave us wrong information and both did not correct problem. LOOK ELSEWHERE FOR A/C CORRECTIONS OR YOU'LL BE STUCK ON A WEEKEND HOLIDAY SWEATING. We have spent thousands through the years for this awful company. DO NOT USE MODERN AIR!!!!!! read more

I had Modern Air replace duct work and install a new condenser that I supplied. During the work they found additional issues to fix and I kept waiting for the "this will be extra" talk but it never came. They did the work perfectly, fixed previous installation problems and charged me the exact price they quoted which by the way, was significantly less than quotes I received from two other local companies! I STRONGLY agree with Ron's posting. This company is a COMPLETE rip-off. My mother's 11 year old (with only 5 actual years of use) 4T Carrier Unit died on us. The inside fans were working, but the unit on the exterior of the house was kaput. A neighbor looked at it and the fan came on briefly, but the unit made an incredibly sad sound, so we turned it off and suffered through the night. Same neighbor told me he wasn't sure who to call, but he had an acquaintance that worked at Modern Air and maybe give them a shot. I called them in the morning and they told me they would have a technician out within a half-hour or forty five minutes. I thought that was pretty great. The technician came over and did his little diagnostic on the unit. When he finished I asked him how bad it was and he told me he didn't know and the office would call me with a quote. I thought that was odd, since he had just checked out the unit and had to have SOME idea of what we were looking at. The office called me and told me the repairs would be $2,600, but they would give me a "free" estimate (we already paid the $79) to replace exterior casing as well. My sister handles our mother's finances, and she talked to them regarding the quote. They told us the fan was leaking oil and both the compressor and dual capacitator were dead. They were pushing my sister to just replace the whole unit as well. They also told us it would take 2-3 days to get the parts to replace. This all happened on a Friday morning before a weekend heatwave (yipee!!). Unfortunately, I had to deal with some medical issues with my mother and wasn't able to follow up on anything that day. The following day was Saturday and our options were pretty limited. We ended up living through the weekend heatwave (100+), which was miserable. Finally, on Monday, I was able to get a hold of a family friend who is a contractor. He gave me the name of his A/C guy. His guy came out and looked at the unit. I told him what Modern Air had told us, and the first thing he said was the fan didn't even USE oil. He went about his business of looking at the unit and told me he could fix it, with NO wait, for $340!!!!!! That included a total system maintenance!!!!!! Seriously?? By my math, that's bout $2,200 less than what Modern Air quoted us, there was NO pressure to buy a new unit, and there was NO wait for any parts. The ONLY thing Modern Air actually got right was the fact that the dual capacitor WAS dead, but that explained why the fan and compressor weren't working. Unfortunately, since my sister is my mother's financial Power of Attorney, I couldn't approve the job until we talked, and she just happened to be in bo-funk Montana that didn't have wi-fi access, cell phone service, or even a freaking land line!!!! What kind of cavemen are they in Montana anyway?? NO INTERNET??? NO CELL??? NOT EVEN AN OLD FASHION TELEPHONE!! THE HORROR!! YIKES!!!! Anyway, it was Monday when the AC guy came and Wednesday before good ol' sis returned to civilization, so we suffered a few more days then had him come back. As promised, the job cost $340 (there COULD have been additional costs if we needed freon, but he wouldn't know until he got inside the unit, ended up we didn't need any). He was at the house for maybe an hour or so. During that time, he fixed the unit and completed an over-all maintenance of both the interior and exterior units. Modern Air is a sham. All they want to do is take advantage of people and rob them blind for something that is a necessity if you live in this area. I would suggest everyone steer clear of them. read more

Beware, im a small businesses owner, we called them out to fix something, they came, said they fixed it, was broken next day, came back, said they fixed another part in which he stated he broke?? Then said O, its really broken it will cost another $2000+ to see if we can fix, I'm already in $1500, told them to stop working on the equipment, well when it came time to pay the bill, I noticed that there time fixing the equipment was a lot longer then they were here, so I called the office to ask why, and she stated " well it take time to fill out all the paperwork???" So you are charging the customer for your paperwork, yes, its part of the job!!!!! WOW, now the equipment is still broken, I paid $1500+ for them to break/ look at/ not fix/ and there time to fill out paperwork, I am truly shocked!!!!! My furnace igniter broke and I called Modern Air to have it fixed. They charged me $130 to come out and tell me what I already knew about the problem. Then they replaced the igniter and charged me an additional $165 for the part, which only costs around $40. So if you want to pay an arm and a leg, go ahead and call them! It makes me sick to my stomach to think about how much they overcharged me! Never again!!! read more

When we woke up to the smell of burning electrical wiring we shut off our heating unit and called Modern Air. They responded within 1/2 hour and tested our home for carbon monoxide to assure our home was safe. The technicians check out the unit. The owner came to our house and gave us both repair options and an estimate for a new unit. We decided to go with the new energy efficient model. Later I had buyers remorse as I told people how much we spent and found out we could have gotten a better deal. It is ten years later and our system is still running efficiently with no problems and I feel like we made the right choice to go with the best equipment. We have used Modern Air two times again on a rental house and a commercial property. The only reason I selected 4 stars instead of five is that they didn't offer the "cheap fix". In some cases that might be what people are looking for. read more

My furnace went out last Friday. A friend came to light the pilot light, but that wasn't the problem! I called the answering service for Modern Air on Sunday afternoon. I was assured the message would be relayed Monday morning. By 8:15 AM, Modern Air called, asked a couple questions, and said someone would be out within 20 minutes, and they were! Both young men were very cordial and informative. I needed a new circuit board in the heating unit, as wires were loose on mine and the fix would only be temporary! I agreed. Before they left to get the part, they told me they had found a new one, and it would be in town early afternoon. They gave me the estimate in writing and left. When they returned, I heard the heat kick on, but there seemed to be a problem. After several hours, going into my attic, and rechecking everything, my heat was fixed! I asked what I owed and the man said the amount they had quoted me! I said, but you've been here for hours, this can't even cover your time! He admitted the delay was his fault, as he didn't read the directions until he contacted his supervisor, and realized my unit had to be calibrated! How refreshing! I'm a female senior citizen who would have paid whatever amount they told me, but these men were honest & had integrity!!! I will use Modern Air from now on!!! read more
