The first time was 4/2020 and I never got around to reviewing them then, but both times they quickly responded with a technician and both times they were professional, friendly and efficient getting me up and running again. I have a home warranty in case of a catastrophic failure but they are always slow to respond and slower to follow up with repairs. Mel's is super friendly and professional from the moment they answer the phone throughout the entire project. I can't recommend them enough. The first visit was for condensate draining from my upper drain (indicates a problem with the lower drain) and the second time I had no cold air. I was recommended to Robert by a colleague. When I called him, he came out timely to diagnose the problem. Our AC stopped working right when the heat started rising. He gave me an appointment and came on time. He diagnosed the problem and gave me recommendations. He did not push for anything. He educated me on the root of the problem and let me make my own decision. In addition, he did not charge for that appointment!!!! My unit needed a coil replacement. Unbeknown to me that my AC unit might be on warranty, he informed me as such and offered to call them to check, after which he would give me an actual replacement quote based on warranty coverage or lack of. It turned out I was just out of warranty.I wish I had called them the year before when we had the same problem but the unit was still under warranty. He e-mailed me the actual quotes and gave me a timeline and an appointment. I called him with questions and he answered every bit of them. On the appointment date, he and a co-worker came out. They were respectful of our home. They cleaned up after themselves. They were courteous, polite, nice, professional and very personable. Their customer service was great. I can't say enough good things about Mel's Hearing and Air. I was at a point where I thought I couldn't trust businesses anymore because of the issues I have had, but not with Mel's. They are trustworthy and actually care about helping people and go the extra mile in regards to customer service that I haven't experienced in a long time. I had been having issues with my AC since purchasing the house and even managed to get the full unit replaced through my home warranty during the second year. However, this summer, the same issues started up. I had initially called Decker Bros to come out since they did the replacement. However, my experience with them was terrible. Not being honest, not being able to get a straight answer about the problem, the techs not running any real tests on the unit, the run around when calling the office, the wrong quote, and ultimately, a recommendation to have the entire unit replaced despite the fact that I just had it replaced (with a $4K price tag). I finally called around for a second quote and got ahold of Mel's. COMPLETELY different experience right off the bat. The receptionist was super helpful and supportive and actually forwarded me straight to their technician, Robert, who was very knowledgeable and offered to come out and take a look right away, which he did, despite having just worked a long day. He immediately noticed some issues the other company hadn't even noticed or suggested. Issues he offered to remedy on the spot that didn't involve a huge price tag. He also offered to follow up to ensure there were no other leaks or issues with how the unit was performing. Overall, the issues I was having are more to do with the older home I own and the size of the original unit installed (and unfortunately replaced by the warranty like for like), as well as much warmer weather than when this house was originally built. So, ends up, I don't need a replacement and that the unit is working fine (just not the way we would prefer). In the future, I may need to do some upgrades if I want cooler temperatures in the home during a triple digit day, but at the end of the day, I couldn't think Mel's and Robert enough for confirming there weren't technically any issues and for providing some tips for making the most of the unit. They were patient throughout this entire process, explained everything to me, worked with me, and were honest, and hardworking. I will be going to them for all my future AC needs and would highly recommend them to anyone else who wants a knowledgeable, hardworking, and honest/trustworthy business. Thank you. read more

I returned his call and he said that he would be able to come out today (4/20). He said that he had an existing appointment scheduled for 4 pm to 5 pm and would be able to come to my house between 5 pm and 6 pm. I started writing this review at 8 pm and have yet to receive any type of notification letting me know what's going on. With today's means of communication, it is very unprofessional to leave a potential customer sitting for 2 hours (and counting) with no updates. This company saved my family's life literally. I can't say how appreciative I am or very thankful I am for Elizabeth and the whole crew at Mel's for literally saving my family's life from a horrific explosion. It's a long story on this whole scenario but I will hit the points so nobody falls asleep. June 2021, finally was able to buy a house for my family. Complete HVAC system was a Rheem, 2 years old and under a 10 year warranty. July 2021 move into our new house, it is hot as hell outside during that heatwave we had. A/C is cold and life is good. 2 weeks after moving in the A/C is blowing hot, look outside and the unit is frozen over. Call the "reputable" company who installed it as it was under warranty. Now the owner of the company who installed this system was a good friend of our relatives. I had never met him, but it just so happened it's a small world. Owner we will call "Larry". Now Larry comes out that evening and tells me the unit is low on freon, I asked Larry if it has a leak because freon doesn't just evaporate. Larry says it's normal for systems to "bleed off" freon???? Larry comes back several times and everytime it's something different, the last time he pulls up on my lawn, falls out of his truck drunk and proceeds to tell me I need to give him $10K to re-pipe the unit. Then I should just buy a NEW unit from him because it would be cheaper than repairing the OLD unit he just put in. Let's say that was the last of Larry. I called another reputable company for a second opinion. We will call this company "Curly" they show up and say the system is flat and has a leak. They charge with nitrogen and check for leaks, in the attic for the evaporator, outside on the unit, as god makes miracles this reputable company, large company said there are no leaks!! Lord it's a miracle!! They charge it with freon, $1000 for freon and $500 to say there is no leak from "Diagnostic tests they did". Well yes it ran for 5 days and guess what, hot air, unit frozen over. Call Curly back and they are out 2 weeks now because of the heatwave. I advise I just paid you $1500 and now this is a comeback. In my line of business, reworks or comebacks are priority but not for Curly. So I call another reputable company, Let's call them "Moe". They come out and say the system is flat empty, (No kidding) They charge with nitrogen and say it has a leak!!! WOW!!! The leak is at the high side fitting to the unit outside. So Moe replaces the O-ring in the fitting, charges the unit and leaves. Another $1500 bill. Unit runs for 2 days and oh yes, heat again, frozen again. At this point i'm disgusted and you probably wonder why I keep shelling out money. My Little guy has very bad asthma and since this has started we have been keeping the windows open for air and my wife bought portable A/C units because all 3 of my kids are upstairs in crying because it is 100+ in the upstairs rooms. So we were all sleeping in the living room with our 2 portable A/C units. But the windows being open with the dust from harvest was really causing a problem for my little guy who was using his breathing machine everyday at this point. So that is why I kept paying and calling different people hoping I would get someone who could actually fix this unit so my son could breathe and we could keep cool. I won't mention the 2 other companies, "Beavis" and "Butthead" who ordered parts to fix what they said was the leak and never returned. I never paid them FYI. I call Rheem direct to find a local dealer for the warranty. I called reputable places in Turlock and was told no, The last place I called some snooty girl said if I didn't buy it from them to go pound sand. I will remember that. ( It Has now been 8 weeks without A/C) I called Mel's, I told Elizabeth my story and situation. Elizabeth who didn't know me at all jumped to action, Had a crew out there the next day. After 30 minutes the technician called and said it was the evaporator cracked, plain as day, oil all over the coils. He also said nobody checked it because the sealant was on the screws still. They ordered the parts, handled the warranty and I was on my way. The day they went up to the attic to repair the unit, the guys smelled gas, in checking the lines to the furnace up there they touched the main line and it was sheared off in the fitting. Wide open gas leak, we thought we smelled it once in a while but it was hot and the windows were open. The guys cleared my house, my family left and they shut the gas off. As they checked they found more gas leaks from LARRY'S install. The guys cut the lines and replaced the gas lines properly. The crew boss called me and told me if we would have turned the heater on, BOOM the whole upstairs. The leaks was that bad. As I write this, I remember feeling so blessed. This company who didn't know me or my family saved our lives. The technicians, Elizabeth, everybody there went above and beyond the call of duty. I have never met Mel, but I thank him also read more

I had a appointment on 06/07 to get an estimate on an whole central heating/air replacement. Inside unit, outside compressor, the entire thing. I have been trying to get several estimates together to make a good decision. It is not east to schedule time off at my job, so my appointments come at a premium. They call me 30 minutes beforehand to tell me that they need to reschedule. I kindly told them that I cannot reschedule without giving notice in advance and we need to make a decision sooner rather than later. I was willing to wait until later on in the evening to have a professional salesperson come out and discuss a proposal. Who do they send instead? One of their field techs. He knows how to work on them, but he doesn't know any of the sales promotions, the benefits of going with Mel's over lets say Honey's, nothing of any help at all. He claims he was there to only take pictures and take back to his sales team what we have now. In other words, they sent out whoever they had available just to appease me and say that they dint break an appointment. There was never an apology given from Mel's on sending a tech and not a salesperson. There was never any follow up from their sales team, and I never received any kind of proposal. This company is unprofessional and for a potential $14k transaction, I definitely expected better. Do yourself a favor and avoid this company. For $14k, they need to be on it, and they failed. It was Friday night at 5 PM, temperature outside 104°. When I noticed warmish air coming from my vent. After checking Yelp I called Mels's Saturday morning about 8:30 AM. He said he would try to squeeze me in. At 10:45 AM I was notified by the office that Noel, the tech would be at my place in 15 minutes. He was and went promptly to work. He replaced the starting capacitor in about 30 minutes, cool air was flowing, and the bill was pretty reasonable. I'm completely pleased with his service and professionalism and he explained the warranty and the possibility of needing more work. 2nd usage: Sunday morning my air-conditioning burned up so I called Mel's early Monday morning for a quote on replacement or repair. As I figured it was burned up. A very reasonable quote on the new unit and it could be installed Wednesday a.m. they were very prompt and weht. right to work and I had cool air by 1 PM Wednesday. In the two times I've use them they've been very accommodating helpful and professional. Hopefully I won't need them again but if I do I will use them. read more

We were having an issue with our heater continuously blowing cold air. We had someone else out at the end of winter last year who told us that a safety switch that had been tripped from high temps. He showed how to reset the switch, but said that it might be a hazard because he couldn't find where the excess heat was coming from, and we might need a new heater if the switch kept tripping. Luckily it was at the END of last winter, so we waited. This winter, when the same problem returned, we checked the Yelp reviews. We called Mel's, and they had a guy out the same day on a weekend for a reasonable rate. He did a quick diagnosis and found the issue within minutes! The safety switch had been bent slightly towards the flames. (100% no way the other guy could've accidentally missed that unless he had no clue what he was doing). He bent it back, and checked to make sure that the heater was working within the safety specs of the manufacturer (it was). The whole problem was solved with a reasonable weekend service charge. Plus, the repairman was prompt, professional, and best of all, the best of all HONEST! read more
