Went for a last minute pedicure and will definitely return. You're escorted upstairs to a dark room where you can relax for a few minutes before your name is called, and then they bring you back for your service, may it be a mani/pedi, massage, etc. The only downside to this place is if you are claustrophobic, this is not for you. It's very crowded! No breathing room. Feels kind of like a sweat shop. Good pedicure though... and if it's a good pedicure, I could care less if it was in the back of a dirty van with roadkill or a zen spa with an indoor waterfall and mimosas. read more

I had to kill an hour last Friday, so I decided to get a 50 minute massage after a long 50 hour work week. First off, what a brilliant idea. I thoroughly enjoyed my massage after sitting at my desk for 9 hours that day. The Pentagon City location is not bad. I found the locker room to be quite cramped - but nothing much you can do about that. The massage I had was incredible. My massage therapist was Tony and he did an excellent job! He asked me from time to time if I was okay, how the pressure was, and I really liked the way he stretched my arms and legs, and cracked my back. It was exactly what I was looking for. I'm interested in getting a facial next here. I'm not thoroughly excited about the cleanliness and mall location - but I think it's worth setting aside. read more

I moved here from Ohio about 6 months ago and refused to trust anyone to do my eyebrows. I was at the mall one day and stumbled upon a sign for Modern Day Spa's avocado manicure- how interesting! So i went in and got waxed and a manicure. Tina did a FANTASTIC job. Although I think the girls at the front desk are rather rude, I will continue to go back to see Tina! The prices aren't too bad for what you get except for I noticed that the price for a polish change is rather ridiculous- I'm sure this is so you just go for the full manicure though. I had a great experience here. Half-leg wax. No wait time (walk-in) Laura was great. Service 5/5 but I took off a star because of the high price. First I went in to get their pricing menu, and for my friend to decide if she wanted a mani/pedi. It was too expensive for her and I had to think about it; but the desk ladies were professional and answered all our questions. I came back 3 hours later to get a half leg wax ($44+) and I waited in the waiting room for about 4 minutes, before entering a very well-kept room with cushy table, and lots of cabinets and salon-supply station. Laura was the waxing specialist that day and she and I carried a conversation; I think I either gave her an ego boost or made her think I had high expectations for her because I recounted my last waxing experience at a completely different place that went pretty horribly. (think burning wax, lady didn't know anything about the procedure, sticky wax everywhere, hairs still left on, etc). To me, Laura was a savior. The wax, which was a creamy chocolate was a good temperature and did not hurt. Laura did a very nice job, was professional, but kind enough that it seemed like we were good friends. I give the service a 5/5. Price: a bit steep. with tip, I was paying over $50 for a half-leg wax, which is more than anything I've ever paid for this service, but I think this was the best job I've ever received. Location: meh, it is in a giannnnt mall, what do you expect? So no, it is not the most relaxing atmosphere once you leave, and the hallways inside the spa are almost "haunted house" dark.... I would go back here again if it were not so far away. (In reading the comments it seems like hit or miss; or some of you are very picky! Great place to get an eyebrow wax. The spa seems to be a bit small when you first enter but there's a lot more to it than can be readily seen. Tried to book a spa week appointment here for a Spa Week massage. The first go around, I was left on hold for close to 10 minutes, finally hanging up. Second go around, the receptionist informed me that payment is due at the time the appointment is made. Who does this?? I have been a loyal client of Elizabeth Arden Red Door for over 10 years and have never had to submit payment prior to service (unless it was in association with the cancellation policy). I have been going to this Spa off and on for about two years and last week on Dec 18 I went with my husband for our Anniversary. The Manager there is very rude and her attitude needs a major adjustment. I tolerate her when I go there because her Massage Therapists are the best and the woman who does my Mani/Pedi is great. If you are looking to relax while getting a message then this isn't the place to go. Its in the mall so you can hear alot of the noise. Not going there again unless its for my Mani/Pedi. read more

went there 6/1 for a facial, very good; the tech. said she recommended me some products and they would be at the front desk, i'm thinking they would be trial or sample products, but they were actual products. I went ahead and got them, even though in the back of my mind i didn't want them, i was happy w/my current skin care products (the body shop). I was told that they had a 10 day return policy if the items were un-used & unopened,So when i got home, i said i'll just return them. Go all the way up there, w/the receipt, credit card, and un-used & unopened prods., only to be told that i could only receive a gift card! I was like WHAT?? why was this NOT expressed to me at the time of sale? had that been expressed, those products would have stayed right there! i do not like being bamboozled into keeping products, esp. if this is their policy and it's not posted anywhere within eye view of the salon, I am going to cancel my future appts. w/them and go elsewhere, after i call the headquarters and give them a PIECE OF my mind, it's the principle of it all! If i change my mind, and as a consumer i have that right, i should be granted a refund if the products are not used and in the condition in which they were purchased! Update: i posted a message on their FB page and the mgr. got in touch w/me, she stated why they have this policy and that it was in fact on the receipt, however she allowed me to return them for full credit, so that def. was a good thing, and it keeps me as a customer, because other than this incident w/the products, i loved the facial and will go back time and time again :-) read more

I left feeling disappointed in Modern Day Spa and remain so. I found them online and saw a price of $45 for a mani/pedi. But because I saw that there were locations on both the 2nd and 3rd floor of the mall and wasn't sure which to go to, I called what I thought was a main line to find out. Long story short, I had called Modern Day Spa rather than Modern Nails, which have two different price lists even though both are listed on the same website. I ended up making an appointment at Modern Day Spa, but was never quoted a different price for the mani/pedi, even though I made it pretty clear to the receptionist that I thought I was making an appointment with the $45 place. It was only after my treatment that I found out that MDS charges $58 for a mani/pedi. And then on top of that, halfway through my fingernail buff, my nail specialist informs me that their will be an $8 upcharge for the buff. What? I've never had to pay an upcharge for a buff, as it takes less time than a polish! I very kindly explained my disappointment to the receptionist, telling her I understood they had higher prices, but that I felt railroaded in more than one way. She was very nice, took my name and phone number, and promised me the spa manager would call to try to make amends. 5 days later, I'm still waiting. And my toenail color was chipping within 4 days. read more

I had been going to Modern day spa for about a year to get regular waxes and sometime massages. I don't know why I wasted so much time there because it was awful. The last time was horrific. I went to get a Brazilian wax by a technician named Adriana who first of all was extremely rude. Unlike most places, she did not leave the room to get ready. The wax was cold and hard. A meh-mall nail salaon charging WAY out of their league: I'm bummed that my opinion had to change about this place -- for the worse. I used to be a regular at Modern Day Spa with inconsistent, but overall okay experiences. I visited monthly for 2.5 years. Steadily over the last 6-9 months, the prices have marched upwards while the number of poor or medicore experiences have begun outnumbering the good ones. Their prices have gotten so high, that one would expect a true-spa experience with luxurious features, amazing ambiance and perfect nail and beauty services. Alas, they are not even close. This is a mall nail salon charging WAY out of their league. I would encourage you to go elsewhere! read more

I used to be a loyal customer here, getting manicures and pedicures at least once a month, and I still always get my eyebrows waxed here. I do not think I will be back for a pedicure after today. I waited 25 mins after my appointment for a rushed pedicure that was very similar to what I could have done for myself at home. Great service, great clean facility -- spa treatment whether you are getting a wax, a massage, or simply a manicure and pedicure! Know how to PROPERLY do shellac/gel for nails which is a big deal for me. Everyone is friendly and very accommodating. A little pricey for some of their services, but well worth it as I've yet to find somewhere in the Metro D.C. area to provide near excellent salon/spa services for a decent price. I have been to Modern Day Spa a couple of times for massages. I think the services are good, but the customer service and their business practices are AWFUL. The first massage I had there was great, so I decided to book another massage appointment last October to go first thing Monday morning after I ran the Marine Corps Marathon, anticipating that I'd be in a world of hurt. Hurricane Sandy was supposed to hit us, but really it just rained a lot. I didn't receive a call from Modern on Sunday cancelling the appointment and knew if I didn't show up on Monday, they would still charge me. So, after hobbling my way to the mall, the mall was open but Modern was closed. Such a disappointment that they couldn't even call and cancel, knowing full well that they would have expected the same of one of their customers who was cancelling an appointment on them. Strike 1. Fast forward almost a year later. My husband booked us both massage appointments at Modern. The massages we had were both very good. I decided to buy a Dermalogica moisturizer after the massage knowing that I was almost out of mine at home. They don't have prices on ANY products, so I was rung up and didn't realize how over priced it was until after I had purchased. (I usually buy the same lotion twice the size for $8 more than what Modern charges.) Once I realized how overpriced it was, I went back to return it to be told that I could only have store credit. There is NOTHING at the register stating that you are only allowed to have store credit, and NOBODY told me about this policy, otherwise I would not have purchased this item. Strike 2. I don't think I want to give them another chance to disappoint me with their poor customer service and bad business practices. Spas are NOT the place you go to add more frustrations to your life...just sayin! read more

B.B.W. I've been going to Modern Day Spa off and on for a while. One thing that I really appreciate and enjoy are the facials particularly provided by Laura R. I believe she's a great esthetician because she takes the time to know the client's skin. She always makes recommendations if needed, but is never pushy when trying to get one to purchase a product that will assist in improving the skin for preventative measure or when potential skin challenges arise. She is very pleasant and personable which is key in developing client relationships with those receiving a facial. She cares about the person inside and out and always tries to follow up on prior conversations that may have taken place from a past service. I truly like that because it holds one accountable and makes for delightful conversation. For all these reasons and more, are why I believe Laura R. is one of the best estheticians at Modern Day Spa. She is professional, knowledgeable and a wonderful person both inside and out. As a result, it helps the client, if but for just a moment, to wash his/her cares away and simply relax. read more

Made appointment for an afternoon massage online via Schedulicity -- as directed by the answering service because no one would answer the phone during normal working hours. When I arrived there there were 4 people at the reception area - but only 1 could assist me (the others standing around helpless and useless) and there were 4 other people ahead of me with their own Modern Day Spa "issues." After 10 minutes of waiting, I was told that there was no record of any appointment (although the appointment was confirmed in automatic email) and was then told massage therapist was "gone for the day." The woman apologized for the "inconvenience." Lots of vendors do massage -- apparently this one doesn't. read more

I give 5+ stars to Christina who has been doing my mani/pedi for years. However, because Modern Day Spa has recently undergone a major renovation and is no longer what it used to be, I'm lowering my score. They have absorbed their regular nail salon into the "spa" and have become just another busy nail salon with row after row of nail tables. It is no longer the relaxing place it once was. For the time being I will continue to go because Christina is so good but I wish the owners had realized what they were giving up when they renovated. Maybe they did and just didn't care. I went here for a pedicure and shellac manicure on 6/9/12. This place is clean. I received excellent service. I was in and out. It's a bit pricey, but you get what you pay for. I just moved to this area, so I hope I can find a spot that has all of the bells and whistles as this one, and is more in the average price range for those services. read more

Alright, so I admit I bought their special "series" of 5 50 minute massages Because it was a good deal. I have had horrible luck as far as massage therapists to this date. One talked too much, another was alright but strange, but the final straw was the manager and the masseuse Juan Carlos. I called at the last minute & was told that if I arrive in 10 minutes they can squeeze in my 50 min. massage. Granted I showed up in 15min., but when I met Juan Carlos, he stated I would only receive a 30 minute instead of 50 min. massage because I was late. During the massage, he reeked of a combo of body odor & strong cologne to boot, topping off the whole miserable experience. When I complained to the manager, all she could say unstmpathetically is that she doesn't make money on the series, nothing about being docked 20 minutes if massage for being 5 minutes late! I am almost too revolted to finish the series I already paid for! If I could rate them with a "do not enter" sign I would! read more

Let me start by saying that this review is a mix of the massage services (5) and the nail salon (2). But the nail salon drags down the star count imparted by the massages. 4-star general salon: Overall, the salon is beautifully decorated and the desk staff has always been pleasant to me. They recently got new robes which are really nice and soft. The quiet room is relaxing and lovely. I was offered plenty of water as well. I am also always impressed with the soundproofing of the salon from the dull roar of the food court of the mall outside. I hate tipping in cash, though, and they do the envelope method and insist you write the service provider's name and put it in the tip box. I'd so much rather write the tip on the receipt and have tipping handled quietly by the staff. Also, this is always the point that I ruin any manicure I just received. 5-star massages: I've gone here so many times for massages. A few years back, they offered a 6-massage package for $39/massage, and it was totally worth the money and then some. I've gone separately outside the package deal and done a couple's massage as well. I've seen several different massage therapists here, and they are consistently fantastic. All of them. Also, the massage tables are heated, which is very luxurious. 2-star nails: As for the nail salon, I'm not terribly happy. First, as you walk up the stairs, you are nearly strangled by the smell of the chemicals-- an indicator that the place is not well-ventilated. The technicians go back and forth with each other, sometimes half under their breath (but they seem to hear each other) in what I think is Vietnamese, and sometimes you can't tell if they're talking to you or not, so there's a lot of "What was that?" "Oh, I was talking to her over there", which is awkward and annoying. Clearly talk to me or clearly talk to someone else-- the mumbling is super annoying. The first pedicure I had here used the razor (credo), which is a public health no-no. I've heard it's illegal in Virginia (but maybe not-- either way, I've since discovered that this is the mark of an unhealthy salon), so when I went yesterday for a pedicure and the technician pushed it, I asked if that was the case, and she totally mumbled and blew me off, but didn't actually answer my question. She kept pushing it. "Only a little bit," she insisted. I had to push hard back against it and insist on relying on the pumice stone. My feet certainly now are smooth, with only a pumice stone. The manicure that followed was overall fine, but I've given myself better ones at home. Also, about halfway through it occurred to me that the buffers and nail files didn't look new. I should have said something to be sure, but part of me thinks that she brought them over from the pedicure tub (which is okay-- after being blown off once for a direct question, I lost my confidence). The towels they used were heavily marked with nail polish. Also, while I don't mind clipped toe cuticles, clipped finger cuticles tend to end up ragged and frayed, so I was disappointed that they didn't use the chemical remover instead. They also talked my boyfriend into a buffer, but didn't mention the upcharge of $8 (at least we saw them open the package, but they didn't give it to him to take home). Also, a men's manicure is not discounted off the women's manicure, which I find odd (most salons charge less because men do not require polish). read more

My good friend recommended me to this spa about a year ago. I must say that I was pleasantly surprised. My first encounters were wonderful. I paid more than what I'm used to for manicures and pedicures but you know what they say...sometimes, you get what you pay for - especially in terms of customer service. Nevertheless, I went there 9/14 to see my usual technician "Kim". Unfortunately she was sick but the way this young lady works, she needed the break.:) So I saw another technician named "Tammy". Tammy gave me the extra attention that Kim usually doesn't. Not to say that Kim isn't good at what she does - which is Shellac but Tammy massaged my legs, hands, and feet. She scrubbed them the way I like and added hot water when I requested it. BUT, after I left, I noticed that two nails were cracked. So I went back the next day and the front desk person (who is very pleasant) scheduled me for a repair the very next day. I just had neck and back surgery so after work, I am truly not in the mood to do a lot of things - especially returning for a mistake. But I was reasonable and understanding that these things happen so I just hoped that she could fix it. Instead, she made me feel as though it was my fault. She said my nails were like that beforehand. Okay...well if they were, why didn't you tell me so that "you" could provide options for me to fix them? She had a condescending attitude that displayed the worst professionalism I'd ever encountered. Even with the language barrier, I could tell that she was talking about me to her other colleagues. When I would ask her a question, she was very curt and snappy. I tried putting up with it for a while but couldn't take it anymore and had to stick up for myself. I asked her what was wrong and that if she had a problem fixing my nails then I would just wait for someone else. She made me feel uncomfortable and I didn't deserve that after paying so much for my nails plus tipping a good percentage. She actually argued back at me conveying that she takes pride in her work not just for tips...etc. She never apologized for her behavior or for anything. I recommended this establishment to a lot of people. No one deserves that type of treatment. The manager didn't even come out to rectify the problem and I'm certain she heard about it. Honestly, I don't want to return but it's conveniently located near office and home. I hope someone who works there reads this and passes it on. I'm sure they know who I am.
