I hate giving bad reviews but I had a horrible experience here. To start it off, when I got there, the lady who greeted me was extremely rude. I called and made an appt in advance and when I got there they asked me what I needed done 3 times. Sat me in a chair for a manicure, and then I had to remind them again that I needed a pedicure as well. They hurt me multiple times while doing my nails and to top it off the paint job looks absolutely horrible. *If you tend to get gel and have them take it off for you, they have you soak your hands in a bowl of acetone instead of wrapping foil with cotton around your finger tips. ONLY thing good about the place is the price, but then again I'd much rather pay $15-20 more for good customer service and a good paint job. Also, don't know why it's called "Modern Nails" because the place is a mess and needs some re-decorating. read more

Worst nail salon I have ever been to. The look of it got me, it's in a beautiful location, the inside decor is beautiful. But I do not do anything crazy for work, and ONE day after geting them done gel they had cracks in them. Then after 3 days most of them had cracks in them. I don't have the time to go back to make them redo them since I am so busy. But wanted to let you all know that. I have never had my gel manicure have cracks. I hate this place. I have been going to Modern Nails for over 9 years, this is the most accommodating salon next to Newport Beach. As they pamper you with spa chairs and fine Nail polishes, the owner has done a wonderful job bringing strong traffic through her location. I see Mia at least 1 or twice a week for a manicure. Good place if you need a reasonably priced pedicure. They charge $15 for a regular pedicure and $17 for a spa pedicure. Just needed a quick pedicure for my feet, and did not want to pay the $28+ that all the other places in the Newport Beach area charge. The person working on me was nice and did a decent job. Of course, it's not like what you get when you pay $40+ dollars, but hey, if you just a need a quick fix for your feet, Modern Nails does the job. The only down side is that they don't have as many polishes by OPI, which is one of the best, long-lasting polishes I've used. But I can't complain. They have some OPI colors, and they took me as a walk-in on a Friday afternoon. They have many stations set up for pedicures and manicures, so that's a definite plus. read more

I was skeptical to go here because of some of the reviews, but I ended up going anyway. Overall it was fine and pretty fast. I just got a manicure for my prom and it was okay priced and they have a good variety of nail polishes. They didn't give me any attitude like in other reviews but they do talk to each other in a language I don't know so they could of been talking about me like others have experienced in other reviews but I don't know. I came to this salon because my normal salon is being renovated, I called and the lady on the phone said that they do design and are very good as well as a couple of the yelp reviews. I got there and always well until Denise did my nails. She did not file them correctly and did them so thin that they broke. I requested skinny square shape and the tips of my nails were rounded and jagged. It broke after an hour of having them. I went back the next day to get them fixed and they gave me attitude and a hassle just to fix a broken nail and put gel on top since the first set was not done correctly. I have never gone to a nail salon where there is such a bad vibe. Horrible place do not recommend going here unless you want to be spoken to rudely, overcharged, and leave with disgusting nails that you want to chop off your hands because of. two times in less than 24 hours I have gone to the salon and they can't get it right. don't go here they suck. I don't even wanna put one star but I have to just to get my review on their page. They deserve -5 stars read more

If I can give this place no stars, I would. This was my second time here. The first time I got such a terrible pedicure, the work was so sloppy. I was like okay maybe it was late, and that's why. I went again yesterday and had an even more terrible experience. Both my mani and pedi were so sloppy. The girl who was doing my mani was so rough and rushed it to the point where she didn't let the polish dry and then applied top coat. It was so messy so I asked her to do it again and she said oh it's just not dry that's why it looks like that. The manager came over and she had her do them again and funny thing is, she rushed it again and it came out terrible. My pedicure was sloppy too. I should have demanded a refund. Went here with gels on my nails needing to be removed. Gels are SOAK OFF but instead she started sawing at my nails with a file to fully remove the old gels. I kept saying OW and "that hurts" and asked for her to soak first... she touched the nail with one swipe of remover before going back to filing again. Needless to say, VERY PAINFUL for already thin nails from the gels. Won't be back. read more

This place is horrible, after giving it a few try's I can't come back again. I went today for a manicure and I have to take it off when I get home tonight. All my nails are different shapes and sizes even after asking her to go back and fix them. They are already chipping and my nails never chip and its been about 4 hours. ok so i don't ever write reviews, especially not bad ones, but this really bummed me out. i came in on a Friday with a gift certificate my parents had gotten me for a manicure and a pedicure. I hardly ever get the chance to get my nails done as a full-time student with 2 jobs; I can either never find the time, or i just simply can't afford it. Needless to say, i was pretty excited! i made an appointment that morning, came in, chose my colors, and sat in the spa chair. The woman who did my feet was very thorough and really sweet, but the woman who was doing my hands (gel manicure) went extremely fast even though they mentioned (and it was visible) that it was a "slow day". anyway, they finished, i handed her the gift certificate and she proceeds to tell me i still owe $16. I mean...alright, i get it, the gift card doesn't say "gel manicure" but really, how cheap is this business that they charge you almost $20 extra? why not just charge me the difference between a regular manicure and a gel? Whatever, i'm really not one to complain, so i paid the extra, left a tip, and was on my way. So here's the part that made me really give this place such a harsh review. So i've had gel manicures before, i know how they're supposed to work. if you're not doing anything out of the ordinary with your hands, the shininess and intactness of your nails should stay put for around 2 weeks (aka my favorite part about gels). Anyway, with this specific piece of info about gels in mind, remember when I said I got my nails done on Friday? it's now Sunday. My entire right thumb nail has completely chipped off and my left pointer finger is already chipping off and getting caught on things. I paid a c t u a l money plus a gift certificate for my nails to look like I did them myself (side note: i am terrible at doing nails). The place is big, and there are plenty of nail techs available.. easy to get an appointment at the last minute. Possibly walk in. Next door to Ruby's Sandwiches... I highly recommend trying them before or after for lunch. Now.. the cons... THE UTENSILS ARE NOT CLEANED BETWEEN USES. The nail techs are not all skilled. In fact, I had the BEST pedicure (John) and a lame manicure (sorry Anna). She was very helpful at the end.. with my shoes, etc.. but she didn't even paint the sides of my nails.. seriously. and she was talking about me the entire time. TOTAL ATTITUDE.. I felt at her mercy, so I asked her why she was talking about me... and she said because she said I can't make up my mind about choosing a color. I DIDN'T GET A CHANCE TO LOOK before.. and that's the FUN part.. choosing the polish. I felt very rushed. She did give a good but SHORT hand massage. My back massage was so mediocre, one hand? Really? When Anna yanked on my cuticle with her filthy cuticle scissor, I instictively said "ow!" She was so rude to immediately talk about me to the the woman doing my neck massage. I DO NOT LIKE WHEN THEY OBVIOUSLY TALK ABOUT CLIENTS WHEN WE'RE IN THEIR CHAIRs. Regardless, I always tip well. They put me under the ultraviolet dryer.. the bulbs on the foot one were both out, so what's the point? THEY NEED TO KEEP UP WITH THEIR FACILITY and it's equipment. Dirty towels. Vicki has been doing my nails for at least a year now, acrylic but I have had gel and also just regular manicures with my regular nails. I used to just walk in but now I call ahead as I want Vicki only. She knows how to do it just the way I want and I can count on that. I usually don't have much time so I appreciate the way she does gets it right and I don't have any mid month emergencies or have to run back. I get my eyebrows done with the same expertise, in private and with care, just what I like. I'm happy. Why would I go anywhere else? read more

WORST nail experience ever! All I wanted was a gel polish change on my acrylics and the girl didn't even know how to take off my gel. I had to tell her how to do everything and after 30 minutes of her using a nail file trying to file all the gel off, she attempts to use the drill machine and doesn't even know how to use it/ hold it. While attempting to use the machine she burnt me a million times so I told her to stop. Finally another lady came over and drilled off the gel but after i had to grab a file myself and take off the remaining gel because it wasn't all off. Finally my lady starts painting. And just when I thought it couldn't get worse, she didn't even know how to paint. They are chunky, not evenly painted and ugly. It's safe to say I will NEVER go back. read more

Probably the rudest and most unprofessional people I've ever dealt with. The guy taking off my acrylics had the worst attitude ever and after making 3 of my cuticles bleed and me complaining how he was hurting me, he then finally soaked off my nails like I asked for an hour previously. To top it off, they then added an extra dollar to my bill because there was a "minimum credit card charge" that wasn't disclosed to me when I first walked through the door and specifically asked. I have been coming to modern nails for over two years and they have excellent customer service, they continue to put their clients first always!!! Mai is amazing and so is Vicki . If you were to break a nail you can go in they will fix it or call and they will have you come in, I have always brought people here with me or referred them to come here. My dad got my a gift certificate to Modern Nails so I went there this week and it was TERRIBLE!!!! The women who do your nails are extremely rude, they made my cuticles bleed when cutting them and didn't even clean the blood up until I asked them to, and the massage was about a minute long and so soft I could barely feel it. When I looked at my fingers and toes when they finished, the polish went well beyond my nail onto my skin. I do not recommend this place to ANYONE because of their uncleanliness and rudeness. If you want a great manicure for the same price, I would recommend Ylang-Ylang on 19th Street. read more
