We are from out of town and we're eating at Boston sail loft and their manager recommend this place for their amazing desserts but also said we HAVE to go downstairs to the basement and try the best espresso martinis. Stopped in for breakfast. This is downstairs of Modern Pastry and has different hours. They had full breakfast- nothing fancy but it was quick. The orange juice was not good at all but the rest of the meal was good. I think there are better options around but my friends really wanted traditional breakfast. read more

Understandably, very busy on a Friday night. A lot of people stand around since tables fill up quickly. Doesn't seem like they have a body limit, so it gets extremely hot and very loud. I appreciate the cheaper drinks for the area ($16 per)- the pistachio martini is decent, the lemon drop is so mild, not strong at all. The cinnamon toast martini is straight fireball with some cream- would not get again. It's also so well known and well marked (once inside) so the spot doesn't feel like a speakeasy :( I think my rating would be higher if I were to visit on a less busy night and had tried the espresso martini, and I'm curious about the banana bread one. read more

Went here as we were looking for a bar in little Italy. Hidden right below Modern Pastry this place did not disappoint. We got the Pistachio Martini and the Lemon Drop Martini. The Pistachio Martini stood out as the best drink I've had in Boston. We also ate the pepperoni pizza which was quite good. We stumbled upon this place while shopping for deserts upstairs. This little gem is subterranean and I had no idea it was there. I thought we were headed downstairs to find a place to eat the desserts we purchased upstairs. Lo and behold, there is a great little sports bar and pub down there. The bartender was quite pleasant and our waitress was pretty, funny and very good at her job. We had a few drinks, chatted with some locals, ordered a few personal sized pizzas and had a great time. It seems the locals view this as a fun place to take a date as it was definitely "cozy" down there. It's neat, clean and fun. The prices were reasonable and the food was good. Tuesday evening was our first time here - and would highly recommend. Somehow when I lived in the area, I had no idea this place existed. While small/cozy in the basement of modern pastry, there are multiple tables/chairs, and a number of bar stools around the bar. When we arrived, it was pretty busy, but we happened to catch a couple of people moving to a table/snagged their seats. The bartender was great, the menu is a bit limited, but there are many delicious options. I had an espresso martini that was delicious, and while not on the menu, you can order cannolis as well. I may officially be converted from Mikes to modern - their cannolis are perfectly crunchy, and the filling is more creamy. We will absolutely be back next time we are in the area! read more

Good dessert martinis here. I have tried both the espresso martini and the pistachio martini and both were simple but strong and tasty. This bar is simple with no fancy decor and sports playing on the TVs for people wanting to watch a game. However, the best part about this place is the ability to cut the modern pastry line. I have been multiple times where the line is wrapped around the door and I am able to just go downstairs (where you can also order cannolis-- just not as customizable). Really disappointed with my experience at this place. Hard to know for sure if the quality has always been this bad or if it's gone downhill. "The espresso martini" which is supposed to be good there, is made with a bottle of espresso mix and not fresh espresso. It tastes like unknown chemicals mixed with liquid candy. Unacceptable to serve this and charge a cocktail price. If you want a good espresso martini try one of the many other options in the area and get a beer here or skip it entirely. read more

Went last night, there were 2 bartenders. We sat at the bar and bartender we had was so rude. He seemed like he thought he was hot stuff because he was a bartender and clearly he did not care about customer service or satisfaction. He also was not just rude to us, we saw him being rude to many other customers too. The drinks were definitely good but truly that bartender ruined the experience. We waited a while to get in and honestly if I went back and saw him bartending again I would leave. We took a tour with Boston Pizza Tours which was amazing... review coming soon. This was our last stop where we had our final pizza (of three) and also dessert. Dessert is cannoli from Modern upstairs which is a must. It was getting chilly and we were sick of walking all day so this was a welcome stop where we got to hang out at the end of our tour, eat pizza, cannoli, and sip on martinis. They didn't have a huge drink menu, but martinis seemed to be the specialty. We had a drinks package with the tour so they were included. we got the pistaccio one and an espresso one. Both good but very sweet. The type of drink where I would only have one. I thought it was an odd choice for the pizza tour because they don't seem to be known for it. Not one other review even mentions pizza and after going to Rina's and Ernesto's I found this to be an off choice. Nonetheless, the pizza was great and more of a connecticut style bar pizza which contrasted the NY/Boston style of Ernesto's and the Neapolitan style of Rina's. Seems to be convenient that the cannoli is in the same building so it makes for a nice final stop on the tour. read more

Ben, the bartender, makes a killer banana bread martini and is incredibly welcoming to every guest from the bar to the tables. Plenty of places to drink in the North End but there's a line outside of Modern every night for a reason. Food is great also, especially the steak and cheese which is a huge portion. Ben always remembers previous guests and his positive attitude makes the place run smooth even during rush. Not sure what previous reviews say but as someone who manages several restaurants I'm assuming they came from college girls that don't have a job and likely spent Valentine's Day alone. read more

The staff here is so friendly! Emily and Lexie in particular have been so kind to us. I've been here 4 times in the past month. It's such a great place to get an after-dinner drink in the North End. During COVID, you have to order food at any restaurant if you order a drink-- at Modern you can order a cannoli with your drink, so it doesn't break the bank or make you over-full. I always stop in here after my meal in the North End and today I went to their New Year's Day Hangover Brunch. Their chicken finger quesadilla is so unique and delicious! We came here for breakfast and unfortunately they don't have outdoor seating and we had a puppy with us. We were treated at the door by the owner who tried to accommodate us. We ordered take out and were treated by the owner who then brought out our food in takeout boxes. She was so lovely and a very genuine businesswoman. The food was awesome and exactly what we wanted. The ambiance and staff were so delightful that we wound up staying three hours--enjoying dinner and a delicious signature espresso martini in addition to two rounds of pre-dinner beers. Dave and Maria kept up a hilarious and engaging repartee with one another and patrons alike. Strangers at the bar swapped stories and travel tips. Unbeknownst to us, a storm swept through Boston, dropping the temperature from a scorching 97 to a pleasant 77 while we enjoyed our food, drink, and company underground.
