I've officially found my new go-to sandwich shop. I've walked past this place for years and finally stopped in, and I can't believe I waited so long. The sweetest man greeted me and even gave me a free bag of chips since it was my first time. He suggested I eat it there instead of taking it to go -- best advice ever. I ended up eating the entire sandwich, which never happens for me. I ordered the veggie panini with eggplant, zucchini, peppers, pesto, and provolone. Big, flavorful, and absolutely delicious. It's a small spot with limited seating, and most people take their sandwiches to go, but I happily sat there and devoured every bite. I'll definitely be back.

There's no place like home and this place goes above and beyond that in vibes. CASH ONLY! Jerry is a wonderful person with amazing bacon and sandwiches. I looove the pull pork and that bbq sauce is amazing. Free coffee for caffeine addicts like me. Only open for 4 hours. Thank you for an amazing experience and will definitely be back!

This is a cozy sandwich shop selling killer paninis. With so many tantalizing items on the menu, we opted for the turkey panini and bacon panini special, as well as an old fashioned chocolate milkshake. Staff was friendly, and our order was served to us at the counter we were sitting at in about ten minutes. There were a few small tables outside as well, so seating options were available, though no restroom. Coffee and tea were offered free of cost for guests. Our sandwiches were delightful, made fresh with a nice buttery crunch on the outside and just the right amount of sauce to complement the other ingredients. The bacon panini was especially enjoyable with ample thick cuts of bacon inside. And the milkshake was on the sweet side but very yummy! The only downside to this place is that they only accept cash payments, but they have an ATM on site.

We walked over from Sirene, it's a smaller space but very welcoming and full of artwork! The gentleman who was cashier, server, host, everything in one was so nice and hospitable!! He kept telling us that we would be really happy once we had our food. He wasn't wrong lol We got the Cuban, Ruben, and a Tuna melt!! He slathered butter on the bread before it got grilled in the panini press!! The bread ended up incredibly crunchy and the sandwiches were large! Only reason for less than 5 stars was that I was worried about the build up around the panini grills' electric chords being a hazard.

I don't usually write reviews, but this tuna sandwich deserves one. I come here almost every day, and somehow... it never gets old. The first bite hits the same every single time--fresh, perfectly seasoned tuna with just the right texture, tucked into warm, crispy bread that's toasted to perfection. It's simple, but done so well that it feels like something new every time I eat it. There's something addictive about the balance--the crunch of the bread, the creaminess of the tuna, and that subtle flavor that keeps you coming back without ever getting tired of it. If you're into classic sandwiches done right, this is it. No hype needed. Just consistently great.

Struck gold on accident. Sinners brought my wife and I here -- drove down from Sacramento to watch the movie at Grand Lake and needed a quick bite to eat before the show. Short on time, we bought a steak panini and it instantly knew we made the right decision. Everything about this sandwich was delicious -- the bread was nicely toasted, the cheese, peppers and steak complimented each other perfectly. Priced at $15 it was a little on the pricey side but what isn't these days. Service was great and they were pretty quick with our order, we had plenty of time to enjoy before the movie started. I think this has easily become one of our go-to spots when we come out this way. 5 stars!

Hands down the BEST tuna melt in the town. Has been my go-to since discovering this place. It's right next to Grand Lake Theater. Easily missed but you don't want to miss it! Service is tip top. Jerry the owner is the best and is a lover of your fur babies too. He literally prepares all the meat himself, it is not pre-bought. Meatballs, pulled pork, the tuna, and the steak. Ambiance is great, small and cozy in the inside and seating outside as well. Cash only but there is an ATM inside! I just discovered they have a new item, The Reuben and hands down I'm blown away once again.

I've passed by this little hole-in-the-wall cafe a million times and finally stopped in today. I am so glad I did! I ordered the grilled cheese and it did not disappoint. Crusty French bread, gooey melted cheese, tomatoes and pesto. So satisfying! The friendly gentleman in charge offered me a sample of the tuna and I'm ordering that next time. I'll be back soon.

Tiny space with a small, but satisfying menu, topped by great service. There's a menu board, a Specials Board and free coffee and tea while you wait for your order to be prepared. If you're short on time, be sure to call in your order ahead of time. I haven't tried this so I can't tell you how well this may or may not work. We got a Cuban and a Sausage Sandwich. Both were delicious in their own right. I would order the Cuban again. Probably not on the Sausage, not because we didn't enjoy it but because we really liked the texture and flavor of the bread on the Cuban after it had been put through the panini press. Could we have asked for the Sausage Sandwich to be pressed as well? Maybe? We'll ask the next time we're there. We also got a Chocolate Shake. It was delicious but I sure wish they offered coffee flavored.

This absolute gem of a cafe reaffirmed my faith in the point of eating out, having new shared experiences, connecting with people and their labors of love. As other reviews have amply stated, they make EVERYTHING in-house here, down to the mustard. What stays with me is the pride they take in this making; the way everything has a little story and there's just joy in being able to share it. I haven't encountered hospitality like this in a long time-- no-frills, treating everyone like family. Complimentary coffee, free chips for first-timers, generous samples, checking in that you have everything you need, deriving joy just from seeing us enjoy the food. Regulars dropped by just to chat and I could totally see why. Someone who used to work in the kitchen came in and the owner knew it was his birthday. Dogs got a little meatball treat. "Service" doesn't even cut it. It really felt like a space to just love food and be in community. The food was fantastic in every way, thoughtful and hearty and balanced in wonderful flavor. Everything had me thinking, ad nauseam: "this is the best ___ I've ever had." The best cuban sandwich (crispy perfect panini, delightful pulled pork and tender turkey/ham); the best greek salad (so light and tart and juicy and fresh!); the best meatball (such savory, homey textures!); the best pesto. I am always on the lookout for good pickled things and would literally buy their house-cured peppers in bulk if I could. But also, I think I'd prefer coming back as often as possible :) "Our goal is that you leave happier than when you came in!"

The lady & gentleman working there were so nice. It was my first time in here so I was a bit nervous. I ended up getting the Turkey Panini with not tomatoes and jalapeño chips. The house made pepper jam made me do a little dance because it paired very well with the crusty bread, Brie& turkey. I'm not a big sandwich person so to have a sandwich and actually enjoy it was a thumbs up for me. I suggest trying it out if you are in the area oh & it's cash only FYI! read more

A true achievement for mankind!!! The food here is made from scratch and delivers mind blowing flavor. Literally it is not fair to other sandwiches to be compared to sandwiches from Modigliani. See my main man Gerry, he is passionate, proud, and dedicated to excellence. Once you meet him, you will know what sets this place above all the rest. Attention to detail and FROM SCRATCH recipes that are in a class all it's own is the best describes the food here. I had the Capicola sandwich from the special menu. The meat was off the charts, cured to perfection, not heavy and not overpowering, just right. The bread was delicious, soft enough not like a boring panini. Even the homemade mustard flavor comes through as a perfect compliment. And don't even get me started on the peppers! Gerry shared several sauces, pepper relish, pepper jelly and the meat ball. They even cure their own bacon, OMG the bacon...This is where a big belly comes in handy! I agree with Alexander W. You might need a smoke after you eat here... read more

The food here is OK. However, all sandwiches are made with single philosophy: meat, cheese, bun... Occasionally, my work will get sandos from this place. But they are often on the boring side since sandwiches include virtually zero produce. Awesome people maintain this place though. Would just be nice to have some sort of vegetable like the simple but traditional-ish lettuce, tomato and onion. read more

If you've been to Modigliani Cafe, you know the handcrafted sandwiches are made with equal measures of high-quality ingredients and love. I ran over a sweaty mess after the gym, ravenous for something delicious. The meatball sub hit the spot (pillowy bread, subtly-spiced meatballs, generous cheese and a piquant smear of marinara) and the owner provided a free sample of the tender pork he'd been slow-roasting for 7 hours. This place is actually a 4.5 star rating, not a 4, just so we're clear. Inside is simple, with the menu right up front, super easy to read. The guys working there were very nice, and even threw in a free bag of chips when I told them it was my first time visiting. I was feeling experimental, and ordered the Cuban, but opted for housemade pickled peppers instead of pickles, horseradish sauce instead of mustard, and mozzarella instead of swiss. The gentlemen were kind enough to acquiesce on all counts, and were genuinely curious as to how this concoction would turn out. The FOOD. SO MUCH. SO DELICIOUS. I may very well come back next week and order the same exact sandwich... until my sense of adventure forces my hand to try yet another wonky imaginative sandwich! Amazing job guys. Cash only so keep that in mind next time you want a sandwich large enough to fill 2 people or 150% of you. read more

Local deli with homemade ingredients, and the best service from Jerry! Made such an enjoyable experience on a Monday, got to sample so many bites. Every item is made with the intent to bring a smile to the customer. Delicious kielbasa sausage, healthy tasty pulled pork! Had the turkey sandwich which was so fresh and meatball sandwich straight outta the oven. Light and refreshing side dish was the cucumber salad. Good convos w Jerry to top it off! read more

The Cuban sandwich is delicious! It's huge and very filling, so you can definitely share half of it with a friend. The grainy mustard taste is definitely in this sandwich, so just fyi for folks who might not like mustard. This sandwich is a deal for $8.50! It's a small menu, but I can't wait to come back and try the other items. I noticed the cook brushed on a layer of butter on the bread before pressing the panini maker down. This definitely added to the flavor of the sandwich! We got to try fresh meatballs out of the oven, which tasted herby (in a good way)and melt in your mouth. Great place to come to if you want something inexpensive, but tasty to eat for lunch or if you're catching a movie by the Grand Lake Theatre. CASH ONLY, but they have an ATM machine. read more

The Cuban Wow what a sandwich. Packed with goodness, the panini bread has a nice burn crunch on it. The pork is falling out of the sand just enough keeping it full. The sliced ham just enough to give it that kick. Perfect I would get more pickles but I love pickles This place is just so great for quality great sandwiches can't go wrong here read more

I don't know how often it is that a sandwich shop can turn your whole day around. This place does exactly that. The sign on the door says, "made with love". The gentleman behind the counter had such deep love of food and life that I'm getting a little misty-eyed thinking about it. It's just a simple sandwich shop; it doesn't have to be this incredible. Impossibly, improbably, it is. Every ingredient is crafted with care. The veggies are individually braised. The sandwiches are enormous - two of us split a single panini and were still full. The $5.50 farro salad was so good I'd expect it to be served in a gourmet restaurant. Even though it's a walk-up counter, the owner checked on us like we were in a sit down restaurant. Do yourself a favor and come here for lunch. Get a panini and a farro salad. Enjoy the Modiglianis on the wall. They care and it shows. It made my day. It'll make yours, too. read more

This place is an Oakland gem. A few doors down from the Grand Lake theatre - incredibly warm, friendly service and seriously, the most delicious sandwiches. My family and I tried the meatball, turkey (swapped the pepper jam for pesto) and the tuna. The quality of the bread, the meats, the tuna and the care that is put into each sandwich is so evident. We'll be back often! So good!! read more

Last Saturday was our first time trying this place out and OH MY GOD was the pork sandwich bomb! The owner gave my partner and I a sample of the pork meat and we err sold. Waited 20 minutes to eat because ewe sat at the lake but it was still warm and toasted. The flavors worked so well together, definitely going to go back! read more

I moved to the area about a year ago and have been walking past this cafe everyday and finally decided to stop in for a quick bite to eat. My first reaction was "where the hell have I been this whole time?!" This place is a neighborhood gem serving quality food at reasonable price. The paninis are awesome! The turkey is my current favorite along with the meatball sandwich. They serve salads and veggies sandwiches for the non-meat eaters. Modigliani Cafe is a few doors from the thearte, black board showed a limited menu. went with the daily special: meat loaf eats: meatloaf with peppers, cheese, tomato sauce on bun(7.50) -huge slab of meat loaf (1/2#) open faced on chewy bread, topped with cheese, tomato sauce, roasted peppers -meat loaf tasted all meat, fresh, no fillers -not surprised it came with fork and knife. 3.5 stars brew: coffee (2.25) -nice, strong brew. crumbs: -didn't get any friendly greeting or he didn't notice me seem he was in shock upon seeing me - i asked if the daily special was available? this brought me back to normality -meat loaf was worth it......still hungry an hour later. the top half of the sammie would have been filling. -just a few tables for eat-in.. read more

Literally the best veggie panini I have ever had. The cheese is melted perfectly and the pesto sauce is amazing. Added bonus- the guy who runs the place is down to earth and really nice. The place itself is nothing fancy, it's a little bit of a hole in the wall, but that just makes the sandwiches more affordable! They are pretty large. read more

I hate lemonade that's not sour enough. Oh and that too, I usually hate limeade, don't really care for lemonade, and don't drink soda. I usually only drink water, juice, or tea (no coffee, alcohol rarely). So that's saying something. The Laos fried spring roll entree was really good. I always liked fried rolls but something about this tasted better. They were Laotian rolls, so maybe that was part of the difference from the ones you get from Pho restaurants. The duck over rice was amazing. I'm not usually one to pick duck, I don't mind it but I usually don't order it, but this was my mom's choice and it was really good. I like the sauce too. The Panang duck curry was so good. My mom doesn't even like curry and she liked it. And the Chiang Mai soup dish, I've never had anything like it. It was still hot after, I don't know, 20 minutes maybe? At the bottom especially. We all ate this together at the end, while the other dishes were in the order I listed them for myself (mostly, kinda switched around a bit eating family style), and generally the same for everyone else. I tasted a tiny bit of the soup in the beginning and thought it was nothing special, like when my spoon was clean it was the first thing I scooped. Only the soup though, none of the stuff inside. Honestly I didn't read what was in it, some crispy noodle or something. I was not sure if I would like it but my sister said she had it in Thailand and liked it so if I didn't like it she could eat it. That ended up not being a problem. Okay so anyway, we started on the soup at the end. To start, it was pretty good. Somehow, every bite we took tasted better and better, for at least like 5-10 bites maybe. However it's really small inside so if there's a wait, you do have to line up in a single file line along a divider wall, where you can watch diners eat. Right next to you is the take out line for BBQ orders. It can get really claustrophobic. Tables do move fast as they're quick to bring out food, however you may be asked to just share a table with someone else. They have a couple round tables for the communal dining, or larger groups (up to 8). This is an ideal spot for 2-4 people. 6+ may cause you to wait longer for seating. 3. The tap water tastes kind of weird. They bring you a hot cup of tea too but the herbal taste is a bit too strong for me. 4. The bbq items are just okay :( I did a 3 item bbq combo with rice for about $21. You get a generous portion of meat, rice and a few pieces of steamed Chinese broccoli (gai lan). No sauce to dip or anything, but they do have a black bean sauce on the table to use. The sauce is pretty salty though, so just keep that in mind when you're adding it on. No spicy condiments on the table unfortunately. The duck was decent, but the bbq pork was a bit too lean for me. It wasn't overly sweet though so that was nice. The roast pork wasn't crunchy at all!! For some reason, they thin sliced it, instead of cut it into cubes. I love roast pork for the crunch so this was disappointing. The skin was more chewy than crunchy. All of the meats were tender though! 5. Fresh shrimp rice roll was hot and steamy and the price is cheaper than some dim sum spots ($7.50 for this one i think). However, you also get less shrimp. The sauce poured on was also kinda thin, and not sweet or umami enough. The rice roll itself had a good chew though, silky but a little thick. It holds up well while eating. The proportion go shrimp to rice noodle is waaaay off though. 6. Wonton noodle soup was good! This seemed like the crowd favorite as most everyone ordered this. The noodle could have had a bit more chew to it, but the wontons were bouncy and the broth comforting. You get a couple pieces of chinese broccoli with this too which is nice. The service was efficient and our main server was nice. She spoke english and actually smiled back. They take card payment too, so that's convenient. You really get some bang for your buck here, but I'd probably stick to taking food to go.

I wouldn't have looked twice at this place but a friend told me about it. I'm glad he did. The veggie sandwich and the sausage rolls were amazing, as were the side salads that I got. I washed it down with a strawberry milkshake and I was pretty much in a food coma for the rest of the day. I met the owner, Gerry, who is a really cool and funny guy, and assured me that everything there is made from scratch. I love places like this where you can see the owner has his heart in the food. I would come back just to talk to him, but even if he wasn't there, I would come back for a great lunch. I am craving a sausage roll right now! read more

I went into Modigliani's Cafe because I was in the mood for a sandwich and their menu looked delicious, but at first I wasn't sure if it would be good because it doesn't look that exciting. To my surprise, my sandwich was amazing and very filling. The service was also great. I believe the man that took my order was the owner and he was a sweetheart. He asked me if it was my first time there and since it was he gave me "first time free chips." I would definitely recommend this place if you are looking for a good sandwich that isn't expensive. read more

The food, the food is heavenly, they cure all of the meats themselves, make the tuna salad with rare tunafish by hand, and craft their own sauces with heaven-sent skill. The service is layered with love and dedication to his craft, a true art form expressed by his tireless passion. Everything about the experience I just had was A+. The service was on point, they let me try 2 different kinds of meat while I was deciding what sandwich to get, the sandwich I got was incredible (Turkey Panini), chips were on the house since it was my first visit, all good! This is an amazing place to eat. I went by accident. It's a small hole in the wall, but the menu looked good. I had a Cuban sandwich, and it was delicious. It was so full of delicious meat and delicious scraps, I could only eat half. For a long time this was not. read more
