We had the kanpyo roll, yellowtail and jalapeño, spicy tuna hand roll, veggie dumplings, and chicken wings. I have been eyeing this place for a while to check out because of all the great reviews that I've read, so decided to book a lunch meeting here. When we got there it was dead as a doornail on a weekday afternoon and from what I could tell the owner came to serve us herself. She was very polite and efficient. The place is small inside but cute. I got the impression that they probably do a much bigger take out business than a dining there business. I ordered green tea for my beverage. To my great surprise, it came in a can. Don't order this, ask for fresh tea. It tasted terrible. For lunch I ordered the tempura white fish bento box and miso soup. The miso soup was very tasty! The lunch bento was huge! I was actually surprised it was so big. I was initially concerned because I thought the lunch pricing was high but since a ton of food showed up, it ended up being cost effective. Although I did not order the sushi or sashimi, it looked fresh and my client said everything was good as well. All in all a good experience and I will happily go back to visit! read more

Just had a quick dinner. Picked it up and brought it back to our hotel room on a quiet Sunday night. We ordered three rolls. Each roll was quite excellent. We also added a traditional Korean noodle dish called Chap Chae. Very tasty as well. I want to say that being from Northern VA, we cook and eat a lot of Korean food. If you love sushi, this tiny restaurant is an absolute gem. The sushi chef is awesome in how he prepares his product. You have the option to order from the sushi bar for specialized sushi rolls or the kitchen for meals. Family starts our orders with gyoza, Korean crispy chicken wings, inari sushi, and for dinner the combination grilled beef and California roll bento box. Outstanding meal. There is usually one gentlemen on the sushi bar and one waitress who runs the orders and serves. Try this restaurant for a really nice lunch or dinner. We were just looking for a sushi spot in Clifton Park so we picked here off of reviews. When we walked in we didn't know what to expect, but we quickly knew we were about to have an amazing experience. The place is brand new, it was immaculate inside, stunning sushi bar with a chef who looked like he knew what he was doing. The menu is a lot to look through. It seemed extremely authentic and the place has no hint of "americanized" dishes. So many options, it was a great experience just looking through all the offerings. I love raw fish to the point that I want nothing to come in the way of it, so I opted for the sashimi and nigiri combo box. It sounded like it came with a lot, and it sure did. First was an impressive bowl of miso soup, chocked full of huge fresh seaweed, great depth of flavor, very good. Next was a house salad with the freshest ginger dressing. You could tell they made it from fresh ginger, the greens were so fresh too. Just the soup and salad really brought home the point that this place was real deal. Next they brought out delicious gyoza and tempura, so crispy, not even a hint of soggy, so fresh and deeply delicious. It was also all so light, followed by my beautiful plate of fresh sashimi and nigiri. The fish was so delicate, flavorful, fresh, I basically ran to compliment the chef, whom was on display working his magic. It took a loooonnngggg time to be served, but the time was appreciated and worth it for the immaculate plates we were served. Not a complaint in the air, it was perfect. We came in for lunch before dropping off my husband for a flight out. We started with a white miso with soft tofu and seaweed before having beef tataki, which was tender and perfectly flavored with scallions and their house sauce. Japanese couple running the front of house, kitchen and sushi bar. The wait for the sushi, which we chose a la carte, was worth every bite. The rice was perfectly cooked and seasoned and the fish was fresh. We had the eel and avocado, yellowtail, tuna and salmon rolls. Our favorite was the yellowtail as it was so flavorful and fresh tasting by comparison to other times we have eaten it at other restaurants. The service was attentive and timely. very good good and very good service! i went on a tuesday night and we were the only people in the restaurant. the atmosphere was very quiet, the staff was very friendly. you start with miso soup (free). i'm not a soup girl but the person i was with had both bowls and said it was the best miso soup around. the fried chicken was SO good, and the general tso's sauce was as well. crispy but not hard to eat. i don't eat fish, but their vegetarian options were easy to find and extensive. as always, the sweet potato tempura roll was very good and the cucumber roll was the best cucumber roll i've ever had (it's hard to make something so simple so much better than others!). the inari was good and seasoned well. overall, a great experience, highly recommend. read more

It seems negligent that we should have waited almost three years to visit Modu since it opened. But in all honesty, from the outside there was nothing calling out to us to venture inside and try one of our favorite foods - sushi. Even tonight, as we entered through a vestibule, I would have had second thoughts about completing our entry had I not first looked at some of the photos on Yelp to ascertain what the dining environment was like. Inside, in front of a sushi bar with about five seats, are a mix of approximately a half-dozen, two- and four-top tables with low partitions, to help provide some privacy. Along a corridor to the back of the restaurant are maybe three booths. Everything is spotless everywhere. Modern pendant lighting fits nicely with the rest of the décor and provides a medium bright atmosphere. The menu provides a mix of both Korean and Japanese dishes. There are separate lunch and kids menus. In addition to the classic sushi rolls like California, spicy tuna, salmon avocado, .etc., and an assortment of thin rolls with the seaweed on the outside, there are hand rolls and over twenty Chef's Specialty Rolls. Starting with the two Japanese beers available from their bottles only selection, my wife chose the Sapporo while I chose the Asahi Dry ($4.50 each). We both agreed that the Asahi had more flavor. FWIW, both are brewed in Canada. For an appetizer we ordered Haemul Pajun ($12.95), a Korean seafood pancake with shrimp, calamari, and scallions made with wheat flour. If you're not overly hungry, this could be a meal in itself for one person. Served with a soy dipping sauce on the side, it had plenty of the seafood in the six pie-shaped slices. It was very hot when served but I still chose to pick up a slice as if I were eating pizza. It was very flavorful. I should mention that we were also served miso soup before our pancake arrived. It was a very good miso with soft cubes of tofu and very flavorful pieces of seaweed. Our sushi order consisted of: Nigiri - red snapper (Tai) $2.50; eel (Unagi) $2.95; mackerel (Saba) $2.50; white tuna $2.50; sea urchin (Uni) $3.50; and smoked salmon $2.95. I believe the chef added a couple complementary pieces of fatty tuna (Toro). Rolls - Spicy Girl ($12.95); Birthday ($12.95); and Modu ($8.50). All of the fish was very fresh. The nigiri had balls of rice that were actually a bit small for the portion of fish on top. While no wasabi was placed between the fish and the rice, there was plenty of wasabi and gari served on the side. The rolls had a wonderful mix of texture along with their flavors. Spicy Girl was a mix of white fish, jalapeño, spring mix and topped with spicy tuna, tempura flakes and a spicy sauce. It was not overly spicy at all, but the flavor of the jalapeño did come through nicely. The Birthday Roll consisted of tuna, avocado and cucumber topped with salmon, tobiko and avocado sauce. The Modu Roll used the pink soybean paper as its outer wrapper and seaweed as an inner wrapper to hold tuna, salmon, yellow tail, avocado, asparagus, and tobiko. This one had a lot of crunch with the asparagus and more great flavor and freshness. Service was excellent. It appears to be a family run business and everyone was friendly and efficient. Did I mention how clean the establishment is? Shame on us for not coming here sooner. I look forward to trying their main dishes. read more

I LOVE IT HERE! Been going to Modu for the past 8 years and it's honestly the best place for fried chicken. It's friend in a unique way that allows for the chicken skin to be crispy not hard crunchy. It's a texture I've never had in typical wings found anywhere. The environment is very calming and a great place to enjoy their food. The sushi is so good as well. Had good Rating so I figured I'd give it a try. Food wasn't awful but I had my concerns. The Fish didn't taste fresh it tasted a few days old and the texture was like it had been frozen, I got the Birthday Roll and Gyoza. The Gyoza tasted like it was frozen out of a bag. I was curious so I called them back while eating and asked if the Gyoza was made fresh and they said they buy it from a company and it comes frozen, that's ridiculous and lazy. But wait it gets worse. Today is Wednesday and when I asked about the fish they said it was Fresh and when I asked how fresh it was they said the Tuna is delivered twice a week and the salmon is delivered once a week (fresh when delivered) Making the salmon that I ate tonight almost a week old, that's not okay. They said they freeze the fish when it comes in fresh so it lasts for a week and "kills bacteria" and they sanitize it. I have never heard of a place freezing fish to kill bacteria. My boyfriend ordered the chicken wings and those were actually very good which is the only reason I'm not giving this place a 1 star. My expectations soared the second I looked around the dining room as I entered for a quick late lunch, and overheard Korean and Japanese as the other patrons chatted among themselves. It may sound a bit odd, but I am almost always pleased when I enter an ethnic restaurant, and find I am the only the only non-ethnic "foreigner" in the building. So as I sat at the sushi bar (photo), the efficient server presented the bound menus and linen napkins, I couldn't be happier. One hiccup was the laminated place mats with photos of sushi and Japanese phonetic pronunciation, which makes me think of lesser restaurants. Luckily, they are not a permanent part of the menu and can be completely removed from the 40 seats in the the dining area in under a minute. The remaining decor is muted to the point of being absent (the TV was also muted, thankfully), but appropriate for this tiny, nondescript salon strip mall. Of course, this will put that much more focus on the food, but I was pleased to find it could withstand that scrutiny. As usual, I ordered just a few items, a couple of maki and a handful of nigiri. I rarely see temaki on the menu, so I changed my order to an eel cucumber cone. The opening soup, the nigiri and the temaki were excellent, but small. The chef prepared my spicy salmon maki by slicing off of few pieces of salmon fillet, chopping them up and then making the fresh salad in a small bowl. This takes 30 seconds longer than just grabbing a dollop of prepared mix out of a plastic container, but the taste was immediately evident. One more reason to sit at the sushi bar. We were driving back from vacation yesterday and were in the mood for sushi...but our regular place in Latham is closed on Sunday and Monday. We hopped on Yelp and found Modu. We happened to be in Clifton Park dropping off a friend and it was on the way home. When we arrived, it was empty as it had just opened at 4:30. It's definitely brand new - everything looks so clean and not worn in with fresh white paint on everything. Even the bathroom was perfect. We ordered several simple sushi rolls and pieces (salmon avocado, tuna avocado, salmon/tuna/masago, eel avocado, salmon sushi, hamachi sushi, tuna sushi, ikura sushi). Everything was extremely fresh and delicious. I watched the sushi chef for a little while and he was meticulous about presentation. The sushi roll pieces were bite size and not loaded down with too much rice. Perfect ratios. While we waited for the sushi to be made, we were brought some complimentary edamame and miso soup. They do have different sake options but we stuck with green tea and water (and the tea was very nice). Terrific new sushi restaurant in the area. The menu also has Korean fare...will definitely return. One issue: the inside started to get extremely smokey when the kitchen worked on getting some of the cooked food out. This is my 2nd review of Modu. I am a fan and consider this spot one of my regulars if I have a Korean food craving. Service here goes beyond to make you and your guest feel very comfortable. They always add something extra from the sushi chef, like a sample of a new roll or pickled vegetables. Love how they make dining an experience. On our last visit, we also tried their Korean wings with sweet potato with spicy sauce. What a treat. Chicken was fresh and batter was light. My toddler ate 4 pieces! This is my favorite sushi spot when I want the best sushi, sashimi and tuna I can find in the area. Everything is fresh and authentic and very few fried options, which I love. If you like kimchi - this is the best I've ever had! Get it with the white rice and it is such a great starter. We always get their tuna hand roll, it is so good, not full of mayo or sauces. The yellowtail jalapeño is one of my favorites as well, the jalapeños are fresh and not canned. I have not had any rolls I did not like! My husband loves all their sashimi. Sometimes the service is slower than we would like but it has never been an issue, I just think we are impatient sometimes! The waitstaff is always nice and attentive. The environment is very quiet but there are always groups there. They do have some beer and sake options but you can only buy wine by the bottle, not by the glass (learned that the hard way). We have sat for dinner and ordered dinner for pickup and the quality and flavor is never compromised. I've heard they have a great lunch as well. We probably go here 3x a month! read more

Checking the receipt before leaving doesn't seem to work as something like "sushi combo 1" could mean many different things.
