I tried three types of Moe's tacos: steak in a crispy shell, brisket in a crispy shell, and chicken in a soft shell. All three were delicious! From the moment I walked into this Moe's, I noticed something different than at any other fast food restaurant. When all the employees shouted "Welcome to Moe's," I genuinely felt welcomed. And this made the big difference in my perception of this restaurant and their entire culture. It seems to me that everyone is welcomed at Moe's, no matter the color of their skin nor their socio-economic status. And genuinely caring about your customers is something that is lacking in many restaurants and should be top priority in the selection process of their employees. Moe's first started in Atlanta, Georgia in the year 2000 and the letters of their name stand for "Musicians, Outlaws, and Entertainers." They celebrate the unconventional. With the belief that you don't achieve greatness unless you "stir the pot." This Moe's Southwest Grill is conveniently located in the Bridges Shopping Center, next to the South 6 Apartments at the Bridges. It is housed in a beautiful, modern red brick building with their restaurant sign high above in yellow, red, and black colors. High above their two glass door entrance thete is another sign that reads: WELCOME TO MOE'S. Once one steps inside, a sound is heard and all their employees with a big smile shout "Welcome to Moe's." The interior design of the place has exposed black ceiling, large yellowish tile floors and lots of orange and red colors to help create a happy dining experience. It also has lots of windows all around their interior brick walls with posters featuring AUGMENTED REALITY (AR), which can be experienced via the Moe's Rockin' Rewards app. On the right side of the restaurant there is a low wall that goes all around and in front of the ordering counter to lead the way to the large menu on the wall and then to the counter where you tell their employees what you want and you watch them make it right before your eyes. I ordered The Stack with Grilled Steak as my protein and many other items along the way. I invite you to view my photographs that accompany this review. I made it a Meal and got a side of Queso and a Regular Drink. By the way, the Chips are free with your meal, they are made fresh daily, and are thin and crunchy. They also have a complimentary Salsa Buffet, where you can get a number of salsas to go with your chips. And if this wasn't enough, their drink machine is one of those where you can choose an already known drink or make your own by adding many flavors. I found this restaurant to be a clean, lovely place to enjoy a Mexican meal in a happy and fun environment. Location location location. Roanoke's medical district has a nice little shopping center with Moe's, Starr Hill Brewery, and Starbucks. You could easily have a bottle of one of Starr Hill's beers right at Moe's, but the real reason we stopped in was for takeout to enjoy on the back patio with some flavorful options on tap next door. Will admit that Moe's is not my favorite of the fast casual burrito options, but I remember how fun their specific names were when the concept first arrived years ago. Appreciate the colorful pickled onions for a topping on my burrito bowl and the table devoured the chips and queso. Seems that a number of reviewers had significant issues with customer service in the past. We made it through the line quickly with a party of six and had way more chips than necessary. The service here is the worst I have ever experienced. The employees are always arguing, confused, and some are on drugs. My order is usually missing at least one item. Also my food is never on time, I usually have to wait 20 minutes for it. This is definitely not fast food. The ambiance feels very stressful. First experience at this location was a flop. My wife and I came here on a whim around 8:45 on a Sunday evening, 15 minutes before closing. Cant speak for other shifts, but the 3-person night crew was not feeling it. I ordered a house wrecker burrito and my wife got 3 hard shell tacos. My burrito was mostly comprised of salsa and rice, with no presence of the shredded cheese I ordered, nor was there much beyond 2 ounces of chicken on the burrito. Far too expensive of a burrito purchase to justify such a haphazard effort. For my wife's tacos, they said it would be a minute extra to drop some fresh hard shell tacos in the fryer. No problemo, makes sense... 5 minutes later they give her soft shell tacos instead and they leave out the side of guacamole entirely. Huh. So she goes back in to get the guacamole and mentions the taco mixup. Instead of remaking her tacos, they just hand her three hard shell tacos. Wow... I get it, working the closing shift at a food service job sucks, I've done it myself. This food was completely inedible. I've never just thrown away food before but what the hell- this was disgusting, cold, wet, and flavorless. My stack had brown guacamole in it and soggy chips just sitting on top and it wasn't folded. The burrito literally just had peppers in it and it came rock hard and cold. The place was disgusting and each person behind the counter was worse than useless. Salsa smeared all over the floors and tables. I should have taken the hint when I saw their food line. Empty bins food splattered between each other. When something on the line was empty, they just stared at me and shrugged when I asked if there was any more. When asking about what they offered they acted like i should know my options and were bothered by me even asking. My family & I dined at your Roanoke restaurant today & while things were a bit crazy with children being able to dine for free (as we realized once we were there), the staff was extremely rude. AWFUL! Don't waste your money! I used to go to this location quite often and had not been in awhile. How is this place still open! It is FILTHY! water on the floor, trash everywhere. Tables are dirty and the drink machines had soda everywhere. the food was cold, the queso was awful and the nacho chips were stale. the woman running the place came out and made an attempt to mop up the water, but made it worse. No different than any other Moes. Staff was very friendly and the restaurant was very clean. Parking could be an issue for some as the front lot is super small. Kids eat free Sundays is what pulled us in- great bargain. Update 6/18 For the second time in just over a month I decided to try their online ordering so that I could pick up dinner for my family on the way home after a long day. I have use this service in many other locations throughout the country, and it works great. In Roanoke, after going through the entire order and process it says that the store is not excepting online orders or it's not open. However they don't close for an hour and a half. When arriving at the store to place the order in person the store is so busy that it's not worth waiting in line. If you're not excepting online orders, have the decency to make sure your website, and your app, tell you before you go through the process of adding ingredients to four burritos. read more

We recently used the Moe's SW Grill in Salem, VA to cater our daughter's wedding for 145 people. The staff was great to work with in advance to get all of our details for the order correct. The food was delivered on time and was AMAZING! We had some friends who "manned the buffet" to refill food, etc. Our wedding guests kept raving about the food and asking who our caterer was. They could not believe it came from Moe's and were very impressed. The food stayed hot and we had SOOO much leftover. They send very generous portions! We probably could have fed another 40-50 people with what we had left. But we did not want to take a chance on running out of anything if we had ordered for less people. We will definitely use them again! Thank you Moe's! We are enjoying all the leftovers this week and loving not having to cook. read more

There are definitely problems here. This can't currently be considered fast food in any form or fashion. No napkins, out of several items, and obviously mismanaged. We got no "Welcome to Mie's" but staff seemed nice and appeated to be doing the best they could despite being overwhelmed which goes a long way, but it is going on 40 minutes with no food yet. Single stall men's bathroom wouldn't lock and floor under the tables had food all over it. Probably the problems are partially a result of not having enough staff. You're still want to fo here if in this area as there are not a lot of options. Hopefully they can speed up the service and keep it a little cleaner. Food taste was normal for Moe's. read more

We tried Moe's for the first time this evening. The taste of the food was good. But there were too many more not-so-good things to guarantee that we'll be back. 1. The menu. No real explanation about what you should be expecting at all to go with the "cute" names. For first-timers - we were clueless. 2. The portion sizes are, most definitely, not worth the price. I could have paid less for a quesadilla at several other local restaurants and would have actually gotten an entire quesadilla. 3. The food prep was not so impressive as my quesadilla was placed on the grill open faced, then folded over - but not flipped or "rested" so that the cheese could melt and the tortilla could toast properly. 4. The prices weren't outrageous but, again, were a little much when portion size is considered. My husband felt that his "bowl" was adequate, btw. But just adequate. We both agreed that the food tasted good, but the prices and experience (as a whole) did not convince us to return any time soon. PS - We went home and supplemented our Moe's meal with a whopping bowl of cereal to satiate the rest of our appetites.. read more

I had dinner with friends at Moe's last night. For what it is - assembly line preparation of Tex-Mex food (think Subway) I rate it five stars. I loved the food. I had the Bowl with nicely seasoned ground beef, pinto beans, pico gallo, rice, and much more, along with tortilla chips and their signature creamy queso sauce. Moe's is probably a bit pricey (but not unreasonable) due to its portion sizes, which are generous. (I was stunned to read reviews here complaining that portions were too small.) My friend's taco was ginormous. My Bowl was so filling (and piled above the brim) that I could only finish about half of it. The burritos looked the size of Yule logs. Not only that, but all our orders were accompanied by a huge side of very good crispy taco chips. The place was clean, and no one waited long in line. Service was friendly and cheerful. Once I (sort of) figured out their high-tech drinks machine, I enjoyed my cherry-vanilla Dr. Pepper. I look forward to returning. And if you're feeling really hungry and want filling, delicious food, I recommend you give this place a try. read more

This is a horrendous place to work for, the management is improper and backwards. The manager is rude to customers by cursing at them and calling them names in front of customers because they do not agree when she pointed out that the assistant manager was being rude to employees on the front line. The general manager and assistant manager Justin treats their employees like they are nothing. They're kitchen has bugs on the front line crawling on the food as well as everything in the back. This Moe's does a disservice to Moe's. You have to order everything you want in your item from the counter, not walking down the line and having them assemble it like you traditionally do. I have visited many Moe's in Virginia and NC. I was excited to have one in the area but took my family there last night and was deeply disappointed. My impression was: Not worth the money My 14 YO son - El Rodeo makes a much better taco, avoid this place you will leave hungry. My 12 YO daughter - The salad was good, lots of lettuce. My wife agrees with my daughter but found the value for what you get here is not there...find another place to eat. 1. The first young lady I wanted to verify the black beans were vegi only and she didn't know. Come on really your serving the food, shouldn't you know what is in it? 2. This same young lady was coughing the whole time we were in there. She was acting like she was turning her head away but not acceptable. 3. I asked what came with my burrito which I ordered by name from their menu, girl told me what ever I wanted and the young man said the same as he was handed my burrito. So I said give me that and that, he said, "oh thats $1.99 extra". Ugh know your stuff guys. 4. I was waiting for my kids and wife to get their orders and tasted the chips, you know it is good to sneak an early chip right? anyway the chips were like rubber. They were clearly sitting there for hours just sitting... 5. My poor 14 year old son thought he would try two tacos $2.89 each with steak and cheese only. He left there deeply hungry as these "tacos" had 3-4 tiny pieces of meat and a sprinkle of cheese. It was sad for sure. He came home and had a much more satisfying PB&J. 6. My daughter and wife both got salads and they were pretty good because it was what they wanted, lettuce with veggies on top. I like the food pretty well, but man this location effs up my order probably 50% of the time. The last two times I've been there the person making my food didn't know the difference between corn and flour tortillas. Last time I asked if the tortillas they'd gotten out were corn or flour, and they looked surprised and said, "What's the difference?" Today I asked as my food was being prepped again, told that they were for sure corn, and then was served flour tortillas. I guess this is a first world problem but YOU'VE GOT ONE JOB. Really this is just a training and management failure and not that individual's fault, but how do you work at a "southwestern grill" and not know the difference between these two things? Moe's Southwest Grill is a restaurant that makes me wish I could rate with half star ratings on Yelp--and truthfully I'm not sure if I'd go with 3.5, or 4.5 stars--so I'm splitting the difference and rating 4 stars. This location is still fairly new and I'm sure it will take some time to work the bugs out (horrible expression in this situation; Sorry). I went far more often than I should have when they first opened up. I've been a regular at Chipotle since they opened at Towers Mall, and this was refreshing to have something somewhat similar in the area that I could grab for lunch or dinner. Overall, I've had mixed experiences but I've learned that it's not fair to compare Moe's to Chipotle--although EVERYONE DOES! Every time I've been in line, I've heard people discussing whether or not it was better than Chipotle. I guess they've set the bar... I can safely say that I've had a minor issue every single time I've been to this location, but clearly it hasn't been enough of a problem to keep me away. My biggest issue is the lack of consistency... I have a different experience every time I step foot in the door. Again, I know it's a new restaurant and I would venture to guess that 99% of the staff are new hires, not having any experience working in another Moe's--so the inconsistency is going to be excusable in the beginning. The inconsistencies are based around the wait time (sometimes things move quickly, and there have been several times where I've considered turning around and going elsewhere because it's just taking so long to scoot up one or two spots in line), the servings, whether or not I get chips with my meal, etc. Overall, the food has always been "pretty good" but I'm not sure if they deserve a full 4 stars. I'm glad they're an option here at least. Lastly, I want to close with an experience I had fairly recently... I ordered nachos online and requested lettuce on them. I picked them up just a few minutes after opening, and they were rushing to make them once I was at the register. An employee handed them over with a smile and off I went! As I'm walking around the corner of the building to my Jeep, she's rushing outside calling my name to catch me and let me know that she thinks she might have forgotten the lettuce, and went so far as to offer to put it "on the side" for me to add when I got home. I really appreciated the commitment to try to correct a minor oversight, but I didn't mind them with the missing lettuce. That seems silly, but that was great customer service. read more

This evening was my second (and final) visit to this Moe's location, and much to my surprise and dismay, it was a more miserable experience than my first visit there a few months ago. Initially, I thought it was fortunate and convenient to live in an apartment which shares the same parking lot as Moe's, but this is definitely not the case. It just makes me angry that it could be a good place to eat, if it didn't suck so badly. The service is mediocre at best, and indifferent / defiant at worst. The food is atrocious. On my first visit, I got a bowl with the steak in it. Bowl is correct, although "toilet bowl" would be more of an accurate description. The steak was charred to the point where it only tasted like ashy charcoal. It literally stunk and made me feel nauseous. I ended up throwing it away, because it was inedible. Tonight, my son and I walked over to Moe's, and I was thinking perhaps my first poor experience there was just a fluke. Nope. Now I know for certain, I don't ever want to go back. In point of fact, I believe I will never go to any Moe's locations. We waited in line for about 5 minutes, before one of the employees mentioned that the credit card connection was down, and we'd have to pay with cash. I asked if I downloaded the Moe's app, perhaps I could order and pay with my credit card online. He said, "Sure," although he never suggested that option to any of the other customers after me, simply told them cash or nothing. We sat down at a table, I downloaded the app, placed our order on there, and paid on the app, as well. The order was said to be ready for pickup in less than 10 minutes. I waited a couple minutes, then walked back to the register when there were no customers in line, and advised that I had ordered and paid on the app. I was told they would let me know when it was ready, and I sat back down where they could see me. A few minutes later, I saw a to-go order being packed up and placed on the back counter. I inquired if it was mine, and they said they were still waiting on an item. I stepped aside for other customers who were ordering and paying with cash. Nobody came back to place anything else in my bag on the back counter. 10 more minutes went by. A female employee asked me what I was waiting for, and I told her I had placed an online order; she rolled her eyes at me and went back to ringing up cash customers at the register. Another few minutes went by. A man who was trying to get the credit card connection working again finally asked me what I was waiting for. I told him, pointed to my order on the back counter, and told him they said they were still waiting on my son's burrito. He looked in the bag, and said that it had been in there all along. I mentioned that by now, our food was inevitably cold. He shrugged his shoulders, but didn't offer to make amends. My son's burrito was tepid. My nachos were cold, and my guacamole tasted rotten. After this infuriating visit, we will never return. Eat here at your own peril! (As an indication of how poor the food actually is, I did not even bring my leftovers home to feed my pet rat. I was afraid he might be sickened by the yucky guacamole.) read more

With the tight and limited parking at this location, and a very enticing larger parking area in the back, could you NOT put up some indication (like a sign!) saying that there is NO ENTRANCE to the restaurant from the back lot? I found this out the hard way .... in a torrential rainstorm ... running like a scared squirrel, trying to find a way into the building while getting absolutely drenched! The food is .... well, meh. This is the second time I've eaten here, and both times I was left thinking that I must be missing something that everybody else sees. Meh. And once I figured out the newfangled soda machine ... again, pretty much like the scared squirrel .... the choice I wanted was not available. Diet Coke? Not available .... in the middle of the afternoon? I had to explain to my mom that her choice of Diet Coke was not available ... so she chose sweet tea. Yep. The sweet tea container was bone dry. This was about 1:45 p.m. .... the restaurant was not completely swamped (except for the water pouring down outside) ... so there should have been some attempt to restock basic things for the late lunch diners. read more

This new venue has plenty of parking and has ample seating. Their grand opening was recent so they have been really busy but I anticipate the lines will get shorter soon.
